Dereck Lively is the Missing Piece for the Dallas Mavericks

- The Dallas Mavericks have been off to a hot start this year, due in part to Dereck Lively's immediate impact as a rookie.
The 19-year-old rookie out of Duke University has been everything the Mavericks could've asked for, and then some. Lively's ability to perfectly complement Luka Doncic as a pick and roll partner has them poised to be one of the most lethal 2-man combos in the entire league.
Dereck Lively is a unique player, because he doesn't have a particularly diverse skillset, even though centers in the modern NBA are being asked to do more than they ever have been. The Mavs made so many great offseason acquisitions already, with the arrival of Grant Williams and Derrick Jones Jr. helping to surround Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic with quality talent.
The Mavericks already had some decent young pieces in Jaden Hardy and Josh Green, but Dereck Lively II looks like he's gonna bolster that young talent even further. The fact that the Mavs managed to snag him with the 12th overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft has him looking like a steal.
Despite this, Dereck Lively has been insanely impactful, helping the Dallas Mavericks start the season looking like one of the best teams in the NBA.

Tyson Chandler really did a great job passing down the torch to Dereck Lively II
On the defensive side... 100%! Candler is the perfect mentor for Lively, cause he was Lively when he entered the league. He clearly helps him so much avoid the rookie mistakes he did early in his career, or how to be efficient in protecting the paint while still being a bit too light at this time of his career. If he ads ike 15 lbs of muscle over the next view years, he will be a real force for us.
But Chandler never played with Luka and also not in an era when P&R was the No1 offensive system. People just underestimate Powell once more. I think he is the main reason why Lively (who wasnt that great setting screens at college) is so good so early. Powell and Luka have a blind understanding when and how Luka wants a screen, and where Powell has to go after that. And Powell is one of the most important locker room guys on the team. Basically every young guy (or new guy) said he helped them get acclimated into the franchise and get used to the system. The ones who werent willing to take that help (WCS, Wood to name a view bigs) are not here anymore. Lively is like a sponge who soaks in every information and wants to learn as much as possible. Hence why Lively sets screens the same way Powell does, he rolls into the free space to draw away the drop big, or open up the corner if help comes... thats just Powells bred and butter on offense for years now.
@@Smido83people shit on Powell and don't understand why he's still here, but his chemistry with Luka was so good that we had to pay him cause he was our best option in the PnR. Now he and Chandler are pouring all their knowledge and instincts into this kid who has all of the physical tools to dominate. And that's what he's doing. 2nd in the league in FG%, and guys are thinking twice about attacking the basket when he's in the paint defensively. Before Lively, teams had a layup line all night to the rim. Now he's putting pressure on teams to out-shoot us by taking away all those easy points. Absolutely love this kid.

I think a great thing about Lively is that he understands his role. He knows he´s not the main guy so he doesn´t try to do more than is required of him. He contributes in anyway he can but without it getting to his head.

I knew Lively was gonna be good when he was talking about setting screens, protecting the rim and catching lobs in his intro press conference; he knows his role and plays hard and you can already see how much he's improved from summer league even a few months ago

I dont think they're a dark horse contender just yet, I think they are legitimately one great defender wing away from being a major contender, someone like PJ, OG or Jeremi will do wonders for this team

2 things I really like about Lively is firstly he is paying attention when the shot goes up, you can always see him try to go into position for a rebound, secondly he knows how to pass effectively which tells me he is paying attention where his teammates are and is actually thinking, that is something fairly rare for centers.
Also he doesn’t sell out for blocks. Especially since that was his calling card in college. Definitely Tyson Chandler influence

Imagine if Dallas won a few more games where would they be without him? Dallas has been trying to find a hyper athletic rim running big to catch lobs from Luka for years
Luka's so good and feeding lobs to the roller, he got Dwight Powell paid. I could watch him and Lively run the PnR all day
They already had that with Dwight Powell though. What Lively provides is that plus the ability to rebound the ball and protect the rim.

As for Lively's defense, I think it's about him adjusting to the pace of the NBA. I watched all his games at Duke. He was a defensive savant. He started out slow, but by the end of the season he was the most impactful freshman defender I've seen at Duke. He set the Duke record for block percentage...as a freshman. It was largely on the strength of his defense that he was drafted in the lottery. So him being better on offense at this point is sort of surprising. But I think it's a good thing, because it means that once his defense catches up, he can have two-way impact. I think he also needs to get a bit stronger. Jokic bullies everyone, but he went 14-16 against the Mavs. You have to offer more resistance than that. But Jokic probably outweighs him by 50-60 pounds.

I saw Lively as one of my favorite and most NBA ready prospects in this past draft. I expected him to already be Walker Kessler with a jumpshot as a rookie, and he really hasn’t been too far off.

Lively has been amazing so far! Exceeding pretty much all expectations! Mavs still need another center imo, but they may have found their starter of the future with this kid

I just watch 10 minutes highlights, and I was like 'Man, this Lively new young guy is very good. Like very very good'. But I could not define even how to differentiate from McGuee, who I personally like, and I think boosts(or ed) every team.
The passing thing is nuts, but that understanding of pulling Luka's defenders as a center by gravity... man that's subtle. I really like the Lazy word for defense. Maybe it can transmogrify into calculated patience focused on timing, like Lopez does. That gravity pulling in attack is sort of the same thing in the end...

The thing that impressed me the most that’s an intangible is that he finds open guys when the defense collapses on him in the paint. He doesn’t force up shots with bodies on him. The awareness is high for a rookie.
Passing after a offensive rebound or out of the painted area generally is something that Powell was never able to do in his entire career and it's been driving me crazy. Great to see that lively filled that void
His feel for screening is crazy for somebody that young. He knows exactly what kind of screen he needs to make.

Something that I think that has been underrated so far is the fact the Luka no longer has to be the best rebounder on the team as well
Lively could’ve been a so-so player for a lot of other teams but for the Mavs specifically he’s been (and I hate using this other than to prove a point) S tier.
He’s doing everything they need from a big man as a Rookie. Sets good screens, rolls hard, jumps high for lobs, plays with energy and is just perfect for Luka and Kyrie.
I’m really impressed. If he can get some defensive mentoring from Tyson Chandler and learn/emulate some of his defensive skills he will be amazing with Luka and Kyrie.
Well with us even a league average center would've been a Tier 5 upgrade
Lively getting lobs from Luka and Kai + actually being aggressive at the rim makes him already the best Center the mavs had since Tyson chandler.

I thought they needed the Tyson Chandler-type on their roster. I thought Gobert would’ve been a perfect piece for them, but then Minnesota lost their damned minds. This younger, cheaper, rim protector, screener (that can actually hold on to the ball), is perfect for them. I’m excited to see his development as he grows with Luka.
The Mavericks are so criminaly underrated this year. Luka took a similar roster the the conference finals and now instead of Jalen Brunson and Dwight Powel, he's got Kyrie Irving, Grant Williams and Lively ....
When we make the playoffs, don't want anyone switching up saying Luka/Kai was always gonna work. Or saying they always trusted Lively's development. Or that Grant Williams was gonna help tremendously

I am very pleased that we drafted lively his of the ball movement is outstanding for a rookie and exactly what we needed I for one am impressed with him also Josh green has been decent aswell I hope both of them have long and great Careers as maverick's,I hope Luka and Kyrie continue to do their thing all I want is to see us win another championship more than Luka winning MVP which would still be awesome to see cause the guy can hoop love him best player in my opinion.

Its dope how they take their time on the roll. It really helps Luka because hes not terribly fast. He speeds the roll up for Kyrie too.

I think he's good offensively and he'll keep improving, but I think Luka/Ky can make most bigs look good on offense. Where I think he has really helped this team is defense and rebounding, major improvement over Powell in that regard.
Plus because Lively is so young he can also develop other skills to make him even more deadly than he already is.

I think the mavs have a shot at the western conference finals. I think that’s their peak cause this team isn’t ready to beat the nuggets. But this team is a lot like the 2022 team that made it to the WCF. A really good team that can take out almost anyone. Still a lot of season left though but I’m very excited for the mavs this year and the growth they have the potential to keep doing.

Lively goin g to learn alot from Dwight Powell. One thing Powell was brilliant at was setting offensive screens and being able to do wonders in the pick and roll.
Lively has the benefit of being a better defender and rebounder so this will be a good upgrade for sure.
I like lively once he gets the chance to space the floor with his shot this duo will be even more deadly

Funny thing is, he was a great three point shooter in high school. He showed this before the draft for scouts. He could develop a corner shot that would make his potential insane with this franchise

I think they have very good shot of going back to the Playoffs and perhaps winning a first round contingent on matchups. I don’t think they have a realistic chance of winning the conference, unless injuries affect the established contenders like Denver, Golden State and so on.

He's so good that i fear the Mavs become so geared to playing off of him to the point that because Mavs have no other legit center to play when he's off the court....they will struggle. Mavs need another true big capable of playing as his replacement.

Lively is a Tyson Chandler starter kit being mentored by Tyson Chandler.
They literally have a huge opportunity to make a run like they almost did in 2022 playoffs.
Lively changed the offensive scheme. The opposing defense doesn't know what to do now.
They can't double Luka on pick n rolls. Lively knows when to lob is coming, and always finds the open shooter in the corner. Love this kid.
