Victor Wembanyama is the End.

- The more of Victor Wembanyama that I watch, the more it feels like the NBA is on a collision course with his inevitability. Despite the San Antonio Spurs being far from what anyone would consider a good team, Victor Wembanyama is constantly finding new ways to remind us why every other team in the league should be trying to win while they can, because once Wemby gets a solid supporting cast around him, it's his league.
Wemby has been able to thrive throughout a minutes restrictions, the Spurs experimenting with Jeremy Sochan as their point guard, Tre Jones coming off the bench, Keldon Johnson being... Keldon Johnson. It doesn't matter what's been thrown at Victor Wembanyama, because he's proven that he's gonna rise to the occasion regardless.
And for fans of anyone other than the San Antonio Spurs, that should scare you. A lot.

Aye off thx for including the definitions of the plays, thats really helpful for my understanding as someone who has never played basketball at a competitive level. Also, I think it really depends on the playoff success. If he retires with a ring, 3 mvps, and like dpoys, he would probably be top 20 all time. If he retires with 5 rings, 3 mvps, and 6 dpoys he would be more like top 7-1 all time. Obviously those are hypothetical accolades but winning championships matters more than anything, even MVP's.
Best all time. Wemby vs OKC is gonna be the WCF for next 20 years.

Another big difference is Wemby is at least 2 years younger than those other 3 dudes
His basketball IQ is surprisingly good for such a young player.
That’s what playing overseas for a couple years starting so young gets you
People keep saying that, but based on what? I see him standing around out of position on offense, and gunning outside shots at a low rate while rarely catching the ball near the basket. He tries to take his man off the dribble and thus leads the league in turnovers per minute.

One thing I love with his blocks is he's not spiking it out of the arena. The blocks are mostly salvageable for his teammates (if they had good hands and instincts) that would easily turn to a good fastbreak for more talented t eams.
Funny thing he had a tendency of doing that when he was in France. Even during the showcase vs GLeague ignite, he would spike the ball out of bounds. I’m pretty sure it was Boris Diaw and his coach Collet who harped at him to control his blocks. The kid is wired differently mentally. He picks up on the flaw that a coach coaches him up on and makes the adjustment in a matter of time. Now he glides his blocks either to himself or to a teammate.

This truly is scary. I don't watch a lot of Spurs games, so usually I just catch the highlights. Those usually don't show the passing of Wemby you have here. To me that's the scariest part... it's unexpected. You expect him to be a rim deterrent, you expect him to score, but damn if he can pass like that also... he really is a cheat code.

It will be a real rivalry again like the good old days of Duncan and Dirk.
As you should 😂

The sad part is that there is a large group of people who were predicting an injury for Wemby who are waiting to pounce. They all said Miller and Scoot were better picks which seems like a crazy take now. Most of them pivoted to Holmgren who was drafted a year earlier for ROTY but same with Durrant they all have their takes ready for when Vic sprains his ankle.
100%. People get so attached to opinions that they hold onto them for life despite seeing evidence to the contrary. Rather wish ill on the best 20 year old ever than admit fault
Now just think about this. He's playing in the same system, with the same coach (for now) as David Robinson. Remember when they said David Robinson was too "soft"? Well, we see how the Admiral took that advice and what he became. And although David Robinson is my favorite athlete of all time, Victor has a higher ceiling. Oh yea, and Tim Duncan and David Robinson still hang around the organization. It's rare in sport that things align perfectly for a young person in their career, but you couldn't have programmed this as a better situation for him to succeed.
"And although David Robinson is my favorite athlete of all time“
He is for sure underappreciated and, to a point, "forgotten". He deserves way more rememberance.

No one said it better than Zach Lowe before Wemby played a single NBA game, 'he will change the geometry of the game'. Lol i was thinking exactly the same.
I've calculated the rookie stats of the four players at 0:40, with values per minute for better comparison.

RPG per minute: ~0.328
BPG per minute: ~0.106
Shaquille O'Neal:
PPG per minute: ~0.617
RPG per minute: ~0.367
BPG per minute: ~0.092
Alonzo Mourning:
PPG per minute: ~0.619
RPG per minute: ~0.304
BPG per minute: ~0.103
Vitor Wembanyama:
PPG per minute: ~0.727
RPG per minute: ~0.354
BPG per minute: ~0.116
Actually playing the extra minutes has big value too so hard to say which one had the best rookie season but I started watching basketball during Robinson's rookie year and he was just a monster. Now he also was a 24 year old rookie which does make Victor (who started season at 19) crazy ngl.
He beats all of them IN all of them but 1 ...that's amazing...considering it is Shaq it is understandable.
We are in the most scoring friendly nba era. That must be remembered
I love watching him defend pick and roll because he might be the only guy in the NBA that can guard the roller and ball handler at the same time.

This was a great video bro, love analysis videos
It'll be interesting to see how teams scheme around a prime Wemby. We had the Jordan rules where the Pistons would just beat Jordan up every time he had the ball. What would Wemby rules look like?
The thing I just love about Wembanyama on defense is he can make opponents think they’ve beaten him, only for Wembanyama to surprise them from far behind with that ridiculous wingspan. That also adds to rim deterrence since he can cause opponents to second guess themselves and wonder if they’ve really beaten him for a run attempt, or whether they should pass it out since he’s within striking distance.

One thing is for sure about Wemby, sky's the limit for him. As long as he stays healthy and hopefully the Spurs will be able to build around a great supporting cast behind him, I don't see him not winning a ring on or before his prime.

He's also blocking at that crazy rate in a era where guys don't get to the rim as much as pasg eras.
Wemby's length and agility would've made him a MENACE in the early 2000's
The one thing I would say about the list of rookies with similar numbers- not only is he playing far fewer minutes than they were, he’s also younger than any of them were. Robinson was 24, Mourning 22 and even Shaq was 20 coming in.

I don't see why he isn't in the DPOY conversation... He is the CLEAR blocks leader and is top 15 in steals and rebounds
orib cz the spurs defense in total is rly bad. not his fault but these awards tend to be impacted by the team rating to some degree, if we like it or not.
@@Florian-yk8vgSo many people see the obviousness of Wemby as the best defender in the league this year that I wonder if we’ll see some writers rebel from the traditional way of voting for the award.
2:45 This is actually insane. It kinda reminds me of Deion Sanders here. Deion would sometimes leave so much space between him and the receivers to make it look like they are open, but he knew he was fast enough to cover that ground and make the interference when the quarterback see’s the receiver “open”. Now with Wembys length, reach and athleticism, he can kind of do the same thing and guard the paint here or if the ball did swing out, go make a play on the outside shooter.
He'll be the GOAT as long as he can stay healthy - hate to see the big guys like him go down but they almost always do.
Next year we are all going to see a new era begin once spurs make the start to building around him

I’ve always wanted to see a big man that’s taller than most players and that can move and dribble and shoot and jump like this rookie goat. The NBA players never had a 7’5“ player move and play like this guy. This guy plays like he’s a 6‘8“ for agility What is a 7’5” player that can jump and shoot and dribble and has the moves and can run. This is a dream come true for a coach. This guy is gonna dominate the NBA now and in the future.
Most of us never doubted his talent, but we did question his durability. So far he's looking good, but waiting till the end of the season.
I think a very important thing about Wemby is not just how good he already is, but how quickly he is improving. He has only played about 40 games this season, but he has already adjusted to the league in a big way and has been playing much better in the later parts of the season. It's similar to how Doncic was where he was already all-star level as a rookie, but the more impressive thing was how by his second year he was a top 10 player in the league, and I can see that same adjustability with Wemby.
He's absolutely INCREDIBLE!
what i like from wemby is that he can do all kind of things at high level so spurs won't need superstars caliber player to actually support him. give him 1 or if possible 2 stars players and surround him with good spot up shooter, some bench and spurs got yet another dynasty
I'm saying this as a Spurs fan, but I also think we're not factoring in how easy it is to score today. I'm going to keep my reservations on how good Wemby will be. If he is, great. But I don't even think he's as good as Robinson was in his rookie year at the moment, let alone Duncan, despite what his per 36 min stats suggest.
I started following NBA because of him. We are watching greatness in the making
I sincerely hope that Wemby has a great and long career. There are very few players who are that tall and even fewer who have long and fruitful careers. Luckily, he has the skills to make it happen. I also see way too many posts that make it sound like his performance is purely height. There are quite a few players who were just as tall or taller and did not perform nearly as well. Tacko Fall is best recent example. He is a good inch or two taller, but he didnt have the skill. Being that tall does come with issues so we can only hope that Wemby keeps healthy.

I don't even follow basketball but I'm intrigued by him for sure
His shooting efficiency is way up since Christmas. 50% FG and 35% from deep. 4.8 stocks, too, which is absurd.
You get this guy a really good second-option and a supporting cast that can do their job, and it's over for the league.

Wemby has height and demigod athletics like Wilt, Paint scoring prowess of Giannis, handles of a point guard, smooth 3 point shot, with a sprinkle of Mutombo's paint defense. He is a walking HOF'er
If you watch closely, he will often keep his head and hand down till the last second, to bait a player in front of him to take a shot. Then, when the guy is in the motion of shooting and there’s no going back, up comes his hand and he watches it closely to not foul and carefully block the shot, keeping the ball in play and not heading out of bounds. Crazy.

Out of all the players in the league, the only players that I feel like don't have a true ceiling is Luka and Wemby. We don't know how much better they can truly be as time passes. It just a feeling, but we might have a baby goat of wemby in our hands
He definitely has what it takes to be the next GOAT. I see a Kareem/Wilt type of career but could be even better since he already has a good outside shot & ball-handling. Once he slowly changes his body into a Rudy Gobert type build, it's over. I say in only 3-4 years he'll be by far the best player in the world.

With his commitment to staying flexible and gaining strength Wemby is likely to have a GREATEST OF ALL TIME career. His long physique still puts him at greater risk, but he appears to have a conscious ability to avoid compromising positions that lead to injuries. He can keep several inches away yet still block shots, for example.
It’s insane how good he already is. He’s insanely fluid. He really is different than any player I’ve ever seen and I’ve been watching the nba for 30+ years. When I first heard of him my initial reaction was he’ll be injury prone but then I saw his workouts. The guy is an absolute freak of an athlete. He’s put on at least 10lbs of lean muscle in the last year while having the flexibility and dexterity of someone a foot shorter than him. I never thought I’d see a player that could be better than Jordan. Shaq and Lebron were/are both great but when you watched Jordan in person he was just on a totally different level. Wemby is the first player that I honestly believe could surpass Michael, provided the Spurs make the right moves to put a team around him. It won’t happen overnight and they shouldn’t rush it like the Mavs did with Luka. Let him develop, draft smart, use some of their picks from the Murray trade to bring in some young players with high upsides. I’d also get him a veteran, pass first point guard this summer. A guy like Mike Conley would be perfect but if not him there’s several other veteran PG’s to choose from. CP3 would be ideal if this was a few years ago but I don’t think Paul can stay healthy enough. He really needs someone who can get him the ball in his spots, run the PnR to constantly get him lobs and teach him the little things that will help him the develop. I also love his competitive nature. You can tell he’s got heart. My biggest concern is that his current teammates don’t seem to understand that he is the franchise player. They constantly miss him when he has a mismatch and it’s pretty hard to not see someone that’s 7ft 4 so happy wonder about Pop’s coaching
He has to figure out a way to get more lob dunks, and how to catch the ball near the basket with his back to the defender, and stop trying to be a great outside shooter.
His team has 11 wins. I'd wait till Wemby get at least 1 ring before I start worrying.
If The Spurs gets hand on another good defensive player and a competitive point guarder, this roster will be unstoppable...
Tgis video gives off "Can Basketball Survive Chamberlain" vibes...
Sensationalism at its highest. He's doing things others did only a little better in a different era. If this guy was 12 yo as he is now (I'm making a guess based on his analysis) in 1992 he would say the same things about Shaq! And, spoiler alert, basketball didn't end with him...
He is too tall. It's ridiculous. I can't take this serious. Like an adult playing against kids.🙄
The minute I saw that video of how a ball looks going up from his perspective on a go-pro, I knew this was a different animal.
