    I think most US basketball culture is concerned with how they look doing something and individual success rather than actual team success. Look at how NBA players shoot free throws. Players who struggle with the traditional method could often times raise their percentages by going underhand or single hand but "it looks weird" and "isn't cool". That to me is pathetic and shows a mental fragility.

      It’s a cultural thing. The US has developed that hero/idol culture around athletes to the point where it’s more profitable for players and clubs to have high profile players than a team that’s working in unity. It’s not rare to have teams win by having a few standout players beeing at their peak rather than the whole team performing as one.
      European teams are working like machines with every player beeing just a cog in them and while they ain’t superstars they sure do work smart because there isn’t really any game to gain as a basketball player in Europe.

      Loved this video, my favorite I’ve seen for ages because it spoke to me on a personal level.
      I’ll look to connect with you somewhere to see how far you’re going to expand with this idea, because I have at least 3-4 other video ideas that are related to this topic that branch into youth sports, the development systems like AAU, the NCAA, the nature of our sports leagues in the US vs the European structure, ease of integrating academy youth products into a professional first team with a ball movement approach vs an individual quality approach, the whole modern tactical shift in soccer because of Pep Guardiola, the Miracle on Ice, and Wayne Gretzky. I think there’s even a video to be made about the triangle offense. Real tactical nerds would want something on offensive structure to prevent transition in turnovers. I think there’s a lot to this.
      I live in Spain and part of the reason is their tactical vision of football (soccer) vs the rest of the world. I’m sure you saw it reflected in their basketball.

    This is not exactly related to the video, but your thoughts on team USA makes me think about why the Philippines is perennially poor in international basketball tournaments. Many attribute it to a lack of size, but in reality, it is truly about the style of play. Every Pinoy kid wants to iso and like in the NBA, and the inferior quality of coaching encourages them to do it in the national league, the PBA. While that style of play may work in against against inferior Asian competition, it's clear it doesn't work against higher quality European and North American teams. That graph you showed where PH was second last in ball reversals coupled with their stinker performance in the tournament was all the proof I needed to make the connection. I believe if Gilas adopted a more European style of play they could see much more success in the tournament. Excellent video btw.

American basketball isn't good because of system or philosophy. But TALENT over everything is the truth. Wooden and high post offensive. Phil Jackson Triangle offense. All look great with Great American took teir TALENT without it phil & Pop haven't been the same. Here's my roster of LeBron's "Dream"-Team: Bron, AD, KD, Mitchell, Dame, Steph, Book, Zion, Ja, Ant, Haliburton, and, of course, that great American, Embiid. The points he made about player valuation and ego versus a coach's presence as a coach was such an enlightening point. Good video but i don't agree when you say that only Valančiūnas is nba level player because we have Donatas Motiejūnas, until his serious back problems he was a starting center in harden's houston rockets. Also we have Rokas Jokūbaitis who in one of the best team in Europe - Barcelona. He is two time Euroleague young player and New York Nicks have drafted him and he may come to New York when his contract with Barca is over. There is Mindaugas Kuzminskas who played in knicks and Ignas Brazdeikis who played in Orlando magic and now he is playing in Euroleague's vicechampions Olympiacos. If Yugoslavia never fell apart, Team USA would've had bigger problems than the Spanish national team. Players like Jokić, Luka, Bogdan and Bojan Bogdanović, Vučević, Dragić, etc. would play together in the nt. The last Yugoslav team was the most dominant European team ever, with 4 Hall of Famers (Dražen Petrović, Vlade Divac, Toni Kukoč, Dino Radja) and at least 5 more outstanding players, but Yugoslavia collapsed in 1991 - a year before the Barcelona Olympics. I’ve been saying this for years, NBA players, specially those from the USA, don’t box out or rebound unless the ball falls on their head. Most teams don’t play a “movement offense”, and too many players are just ball watchers with terrible basics, which they try to make up for with physical superiority, but it’s not enough anymore.

    Great analysis of the game , I totally agree with everything, moving the ball is the key to breaking down defences, and creates better shot opportunities. However i think you also miss one key element and one that is not so easy to define. Moving the ball involves the whole team , once the whole team becomes involved and invested in the game, it lifts their tempo and mood of each player, this then translates to how they defend , how they set ,how they rebound, how they compete, how quick they run, how aggressive they are and how they want to win. The whole team is invested in the performance no matter who scores the points.

    Really nice video. FWIW, many of us growing up outside the USA learning to play basketball were told early on: “you’re not 6’6” with a 40 inch vertical so you’re gonna have to learn how to play”. Getting repeated good looks through ball and body movement and adherence to a well-drilled system was the way. 2 hour practices repeating one play over and over to learn all the options was normal. But even in Australia we saw kids who were excellent athletes that could win often enough that way that they didn’t have to learn the game to the same degree. And some kids that should have gone on to be pro didn’t because they failed to develop sufficiently to compete at the next level. I feel what you are describing is a version of this same problem for guys that actually went pro. It’s learning the game and what it takes to win.

    I’ve watched 2 straight videos now, one football now this one. Absolutely amazing and intriguing, love it!
    I had some input at around the 10 minute mark in relation to Steve Kerr and the Warriors. So as much as it goes to say Kerr had a better winning formula, I feel like Mark Jacksons impact goes beyond stats which are available here, which is ultimately why the Warriors are the outliers and champions. Mark Jackson found Andre Igoudala and inevitably other players being the “Ultimate player coach”. But I only comment this to show to the mere connection of what goes beyond statistics but also how it connects to the big picture of success, consistency and a thorough plan. Keep these videos going though and i will keep discovering 🙏🏻

    Great analysis, thanks for your hard work and the deep dive. In addition to things that you pointed out, international teams have more continuous and long-term preparation for tournaments like FIBA/Olympics. Many of these teams consist of players who have been playing together for years, very often since their youth/junior national team days. This long-term cohesion provides a significant advantage in terms of team chemistry and understanding on the court.
    That might sound like an excuse - and I guess it is - but it's hard to imagine a scrappy and cohesive actual NBA *team* that's primarily composed of American NBA players (think Miami Heat for the last few years) wouldn't fare much better than this team. I think they've tried to add more role-player types and that's a good move, but there's just not any kind of cohesion there.
    And props for calling Ant out.. for all the accolades he received for his offensive prowess (and he's amazing), that is unacceptable effort when you are representing your country on an international stage IMO.

    Great video man you did a great job analysing the games. Just a heads the logo you used for the Euro league is actually a football(soccer) competition.

    Great video and overall excellent presentation! Just a minor correction: in the NBA vs. EuroLeague teams comparison, you mistakenly used the logo of a European football (aka soccer for Americans) competition instead of the EuroLeague logo.

    Another gem, Mike! The typical NBA analysis on ESPN is sub-par at best -- this video blows them out of the water!
    I'm curious about Phil Jackson's legacy and how good he, and Tex Winter's Triangle offense, really was. Granted, it was a different NBA then but It'd be interesting to see if the Bulls (when Michael left to play baseball) were more efficient (possibly running more reversals?) as I think The Last Dance mentioned something to this effect. It'd also be interesting to see the efficiency numbers when Kukoc was on the floor. I wonder if we'd also see differences between the Shaq/Kobe Lakers v. Pau/Kobe as well.
    Anyways, this is fantastic analysis, Mike! And I hope the Bulls reached out to you to work in their analytics department. Looks like they're going to be stuck in mediocrity... again.
    Oh, and it's downright criminal why you don't have more subs -- watching your content is like hearing a great band in their early stages right before they blow up!

    7:40 That's actually pretty fricking good!!! The "ball doesnt get tired" was surprisingly mindblowing to me, now im thinking all the situations the game could be manipulated by moving the ball instead of my body. One of the reasons why you score by space instead of banging the defense is that doesnt hurt or tire the player (well, maybe except if they run a lot) AND allow a longer career

    Good video, but some things. The Euroleague logo you used is the Europa League, basically Champions League second tier in football soccer. The second thing is against the argument "the best players play here", it doesn't mean you are the best, in soccer the english premier league is considered the best league, as they have the mos money, with two sheik owned teams, but England has suffered internationaly, they have reached a final 2 times in their history, a world cup which they won, and last eurocup, which they lost. Same argument can be made with the Saudi League, as more and more talents go there for the money, it doesn't mean its the best. And lastly, the entire thing that is happening in basketball just happened in baseball a few years back. They made the argument that if they brought their best team they wouldn't loose, so they did that last wc, Mookie Bets, Aaron Judge, Will Smith, you name them, that team lost to Japan and Mexico, the ladder almost gets the mercy rule, against "the best team", both teams with basically half the team playing in the local league, and it will happen next FIBA wc, when they bring the nukes, someones gonna beat them. Greetings from Mexico, and again, great video!

    • @NewEarthSon
      @NewEarthSon Před 6 měsíci

      Your argument works in the futbol world but not the basketball world. USA is still King Until another country or countries prove otherwise. For another country to be king, they will need a majority of their best players to be in the nba or have a league that rivals nba and produce most of the best players that beat usa in competitions consistently and decisively.

    • @edipires15
      @edipires15 Před 6 měsíci

      @@NewEarthSonNah, for the moment the “kings” are Germany (World Champions) and the US (Olympic Champions). You don't need to have the majority of players in the NBA to be the best team, this World Cup has clearly shown that. Heck, the NBA defensive player of the year got humiliated by a player playing in Lithuania’s 2nd division.

  • @jehushaphat

    Very good analysis. Way to debunk the 'undersize' and 'not cream of the crop' excuses. Not too sure about how the international teams are structured, but is it possible that chemistry might be another factor, and that the players gel better from having more familiarity and/or practice more with each other?

    Honestly a major reason for their recent losses is the fact that they do not care about these competitions. Winning a world cup or a eurobasket is the dream for every european basketball player, i've seen countless videos of players saying that they'd rather win a gold medal than a NBA championship.
    Europeans value these games much more, for example, when Lithuania beat USA. The game was completely meaningless as both teams had already advanced to the next stage (losing that game would have honestly given Lithuania an easier road to the finals). Yet us Lithuanians celebrated that win to america as if we'd just won the championship. Being a small country, every Lithuanian around the world gathered to celebrate this win, even though it could have been seen as unnecessary.
    The Americans are expected to dominate every time they play, which i believe is a factor to their lack of trying on defence. As they seem to belive that their talent alone will win them the games. Which did work back in the day, but isn't enough any longer.

      Yes I could I already sence what was coming for us when lithuania where in the same group as Mexico it amaze me they didn't rely on Jonas but made smart plays lithuania had players coming from all over the court they just didn't rely on their scorer and it's a so much smaller country compared to the US and Mexico but US where expected to Win it all

      They prefer eurobasket or World Cup medals because they play with their national teams. Ask Yannis or Jokic and will say the same. NBA players believe their national championship and the ring are more valuable than a neck ribbon.
