  • European fundamentals once again proved superior to USA's individual talent. Lithuania, led by Vaidas Kariniauskas, shocked the United States 110-104 simply by playing basketball the right way. In this video, BasketNews' Augustas Suliauskas demonstrates how the NBA stars disrespected the opponents at the beginning, how Lithuania's coaching staff outplayed Steve Kerr & why going 9/9 from the 3-point land wasn't luck.

One big problem for the USA is that it selects too many players that have been the best or second best player on their team all their lives and suddenly they have to play a supportive roll. It is not that they don't try to adjust but they have not built the habits for those rolls, fighting over every screen, boxing out every time, setting good screens, and getting only four shots a game. They have grown used to having teammates to do what we call "the dirty work" while they get plays called for their strengths on offense. I have to wonder if anyone has ever benched Brandon Ingram for not blocking out in his life. Same for Palo and Ant, big strong guys that should get some rebounds but never seem to.
Add that to subtle things like the difference in how traveling and block charges are called and they lose the ability to just play in the flow of the game. They end up thinking too much out there and still being surprised by a 14 second shot clock after a turnover. I have seen some outstanding FIBA players struggle in the NBA for the same reason. There is more of an adjustment period than people think. It is one reason it was so surprising that Luka did so well starting his rookie year, but he is a special case.

The NBA, on average, is exactly what was seen in this game... lazy, sluggish, and disconnected. I'm amazed it still has a following. As for the boxing out, most college coaches don't teach it or expect it to happen, which has me wondering whether high school coaches do anymore. But the NBA is basically jogging down the court, playing a semblance of defense, then jogging to the other end when someone shoots. It's all marketing (selling apparel) these days.

Half of the team are max players. Even if its their B or C team Americans supposed to have "better talent" so they should win 10 times out of 10. Lithuania missing Sabonis so they not 100% force either.

@@janionii-sama3952They won 9 of their last 10 games with this team. Let’s not pretend a 90% win ratio isn’t meeting their expectations…

can i say one thing? They only choose Italy instead of Serbia. Then how it goes? They smashed Italy with 37pts of GAP. So they said “ hey we are enjoying this competition “
Lithuania then loss against Serbia. c’mon guys. On 3rd and 4th quarter they easily reduced the gap. They are smart. They won’t be in the other’s bracket. With slovenia serbia and canada. They choose Italy and probably 🇩🇪 or 🇱🇻.
    This is SMART/CLEVERNESS.

Refs actually were trying to save USA by giving some hardly understandable whistles to Lithuanians. 2 times USA players literally ran into standing Motiejūnas and Brazdeikis and somehow it was still blocking foul for Lithuanians. JV got 1 offensive foul in the 3rd quarter for an 'illegal screen' and on the same time USA players didn't get the same foul just moments before in their offense. Then one of the refs decided that JV didn't deserve to score 2+1 although he was fouled when shooting. And 4 out of 5 these calls happened in the span of 5 mins when USA was making comeback. In my opinion it's criminal that no one is actually mentioning these really questionable calls and that USA could not even win with it. Sometimes it looked that it's 6v5 on the court due to this fact.

Foul on Sedekerskis, then he tried to dunk and regular foul for grabing Kuzminskas, not reaching the ball

      You are so right!
All I seem to hear is belittling of Lithuania's achievement and excuses why US is still the best.

Nobody got "exposed". Lithuania just jacked up a bunch of threes and got lucky. Its just one game.
