those are set up before the season begins right? they can't change them however they want during season?
It's not, they're a small market team that was nowhere near this special last season. If they make a deep playoff run in 2024 only then it would warrant more televised games. Fan bases and team relevance is all supply and demand

Teams are being lead by guys who are elite scorers and passers instead of one or the other. Teams are being lead by peak Oscar Robertson's while being surrounded with shooters and vertical spacers. Unless they change some rules to help defense (they won’t) this is going to be the new norm.
Also, NBA have to stop giving free throws every single time offensive player initiate a contract...that should be called offensive foul or noncall...for example, embiid gets half of his free throws from grifting like that...stop that...

True, and i think Lebron isn’t recognized enough for his influence on todays game, because he was really the 1st succesful player to play point-forward in a heliocentric system and be the 1st scoring option and primary ball handler/playmaker on his team.
Before Lebron the best players were guys like Shaq, Duncan, KG or Dirk (Scoring+defensive bigs), or guys like Kobe, T-Mac, Gilbert Arenas (Scoring+Defensive wing, with good but not elite playmaking and who played more off ball and iso), or traditional pg like Nash, Kidd or Cp3 (True pass first player, except Cp3 none of them ever averaged 20ppg).
But since Lebron, you have guys like Harden, Westbrook, Dame, Jokic, Doncic, Ja Morant, SGA, Trae Young, Halliburton, Lamelo ect who all lead their team in scoring and assists, and Curry can also play like that when he need to (Like against the Lakers last season because of AD defense), so not off ball, but even when he played off ball he was often close to Draymond in assists, and of course he lead them in scoring.
KD also improved as a playmaker over the year, and when Booker and Beal, or Kyrie and Harden were out, he could be that guy too, same for Booker, right now he is averaging 30ppg and 9 apg .. Even Embiid average 6.3 assists this season, just 0.5 less than Maxey, and Giannis lead the Bucks in pts and assists many time if im not mistaken. And ANT, Sengun, Zion, Paolo Banchero, Wemby ect will probably all play like that in their prime.
So yeah i just think Lebron changed the game, it’s just not as obvious as Steph, the HEAT were even the 1st team to play small ball, it wasn’t mini ball like the Rockets but remember Bosh was a PF, and Lebron a SF, but with the HEAT Bosh played the 5 and Lebron the 4 …
@@realone296 Tbf it's better now than it was back then. They were shooting 20% more free throws in a 20% slower pace during the 90's, and any superstar screaming a bit at the ref would get easy FTAs. The illegal defense rule was randomly used (generally when it was benifical for a superstar), I'm really glad they got rid of that non-sensical rule.
And dont get me wrong, officiating is still pretty bad, but at least we are making progress.
Buddy’s role in the pacers offense can’t be emphasized enough. He got a rep as a chucker early in his career, but his movement and quick decision making opens up so much for his teammates
Some of the greatest of players of all time were considered chuckers until their teams started winning.

Once upon a time the Kings had Fox, Buddy and Bogdanonvic all on the same team. If they had elite playmaker (drafted Luka / Sabonis, Hali) and coach knows how to utilize screens and movement, they probably already got a chip. That offense would probably be even more deadly than today's Kings, Hawks and Pacers.

Basically, in the regular season constraints it's very hard to implement a defensive scheme and really scope out a team- in the euroleague you get a week between games to practice, in the NBA regular season you have back to backs. I mean, the players are also really good, but it's easier to freelance on offense than it is on defense. It's why playoffs basketball is so different- you meet a team enough times in a row and get time to prepare so the defense is a lot better.

Exactly. Playoff basketball defense is a more consistent strategy of beating lineups, consistently taking away things a team does on offense, numerous adjustments and having scorers excel in difficult shot making. So often you have one offs of explosive scoring nights in the regular season and in part when teams are still pretty fresh. By the time the 2nd half of the season rolls in, these offense only teams don't have as much gas to have these explosive scoring nights.
It's more that the NBA stopped allowing teams to actually play defense. Ya know, know someone on their ass for daring to enter the lane, hand checking. That sort of thing. The legislated the physicality out of the game. 30 years ago Trey Young's bitch ass would've retired after a month due to the physicality of the the game. We need a league with more Charles Oakley's and Bill Laimbeer's. The NBA sucks.
This is not true, you play in the local league in the weekend and usually there are double match weeks in Euroleague so 3 games a week
This corupt league is forcing this scoring, the money is bigger as more and more people that know nothing of bball see it as fashion. You've seen Haliburtons weaknesses in the World Cup, it's the same player. Here we can see several carry balls, his picks are moving and what irritates the most is the fake euro-step, mostly travel. Don't get me started on Harden in Houston. All to make the game more interesting for fake fans.

I love how much joy and creativity Haliburton plays with. He's probably my second favorite player to watch in the NBA after Jokic.
Being on the pacers would be such a joy. Sprinting around all night is a major part of my open gym playstyle cause people absolutely hate dealing with it and I’ve always been a runner so it’s not even tough to pull off

Ben, this must be the sixth time I've watched this video since you put it out. Amazing work putting this together, and these offenses are absolutely fascinating.
Games like these really show me how hard it is to play defense in todays nba. You can be the most skilled defender, but more than likely you won’t be able to lock up a good scorer without letting them bait you on fouls.

@@kappakuppa7255exactly, hand checking does nothing to stop elite shooters. You now have an 8 guy rotation who have the green light to shoot the 3, everyone can damn near handle the ball and the switching/spacing is a nightmare for defences.

Seeing these scores is so hilarious to me having grown up watching basketball in the late 90’s/ early 2000’s, where a team scoring 90 points was a high scoring game
Yup, the rules swung way too far in the other direction, and have stayed the same for so long that teams and players are fully acclimated on how to take advantage of these rules.
Silver has no back bone and doesn't care about integrity or long term watchability. He knows kids want scoring and also want to believe their generation is the best ever, and these same kids don't think about rule changes from 20 years ago. They will even make up excuses for the product they see, or chalk it all up to humans "evolving" in only 20 years. 😂
Having common sense and objectivity is tough these days. You also have people who think being objective isn't taking a side, so you have to insult 2 things equally if they're being compared.

Every era of the NBA had problems, but what we see now is pure negligence that has been growing by the year. Drastic change has needed to happen for a decade, but no one will step up.

@@John6-40 Evolution of the game. Not everybody can develop strong physique to play post up game, and shooting is way efficient, so that's how it is now. Plus, these guys developed great accuracy. And what's ironic is the fact that who revolutionized the game was the same Jordan, his Bulls team wasn't focused on center posting game, but rather on a shooting one with movement and fast pace, as well as fast transitions. Then it evolved to now shooting lights out from 3 range and beyond.

I've been going back and watching old finals games for fun. Unsurprisingly you get a lot of bulls games. It's staggering how often you'll see several minutes of no one scoring or 4+ straight turnovers each way.
I keep saying is all about rule set. You don’t see by far this type of game when USA play under international FIBA rules. In fact, all this pace, fancy offense tricks, deep 3s or drive and kick dissapear. In fact they can not even shoot 3s. And on the defensive side of the court, they look totally lost once they forget how to defend. NBA is becoming a real video game.

Ppl will point to defenses not being good but how do you defend a team like Indy? The shooters are elite and they know their role. They are not going to do something that they are not suppose to do. Tyrese is an elite playmaker who DOES NOT turn the ball over and he consistently makes the right play. He's also an elite, efficent scorer who can take and make any type of shot (he's 24/10 on 50/40/90 so far). How is a team suppose to stop this?

People rave about players numbers and efficiency in an era where they're scoring 150 points. The inflation is gonna make casuals think everyone is an all timer.
This is why you look at league and rate adjusted stats. Instead of true shooting it's better to look at TS+, which normalizes to league average.

1. You don't have to actually dribble these days. When you can palm the ball, take extra steps, etc against an already neutered defense, what can they do?
Offensive fouls barely exist anymore either. Especially for star players like LeBron.
2. No hand checking. Also have to allow space. Teams are afraid of the 4 point play, so they are careful not to foul.
Shooters know they can let it fly without worry of being hit.
3. No bigs in the paint due to 3 second rule, and bigs are often smaller due to the emphasis on 3pt shooting.
So there is even more emphasis on the 3, as it spreads people out and makes it so easy to either find the open guy or pick and roll or drive to the hoop.
pacers really did a splendid rebuild. I remember the times when their stars like roy hibbert are remembered for defense, now look at that unending offense.
I would but it's hideous, bring back the Defense and I'll watch the basketball again.

Buddy is in a contract year and the Pacers could not agree to an extension. Hield being traded away will worsen this offence. I hope he is acquired by a team with another great passer so that he can continue being an awesome offensive talent.

A lot of these crazy offenses can be attributed to the league favoring offense so greatly with the way they want games officiated
In the bubble u discussed how houstons "microball" lineup was succeeding on defense. Do you think we will see a shift back to these sort of lineups, to counter these new pace and space teams? Or do you think that going twin tower, like so many now do, is the best way to deal with these teams (to lock of the rim)?
I think we will see very different solutions that are adjusted to the talent each team has. If you have two big men and one of them can handle the ball (e.g. Mobley in the Cavs) you punish teams with a pick and roll between the big men. If you have small players that can run fast, dribble and shoot, teams will punish the other team for not having enough speed.
I think the NBA is at its best right now. So many styles, so much talent, so many different solutions to find success.
I think the playoffs will be different than regular season basketball.
@@DavidJCO Nah the Knicks showed the solution in the playoffs vs the Cavs last year. Cavs hobbit sized back court was picked apart on mismatches especially when the Cavs tried to hide Garland on a non-shooting wing like Barrett. So he would just drive past him anyway which forced the Cavs bigs to shift positions on defense. This also let Mitchell Robinson to feast inside for rebounds or rim running opportunities against a smaller Jarrett Allen or Mobley if he was the guy at the rim. And of course Jalen Brunson burned whichever wing defender the Cavs tried to throw at him at the perimeter. Overall the Cavs had no perimeter defense to stop the Knicks from doing their thing. Mobley had to be glued on Randle because he can still hit the 3-ball. Overall In last years playoffs most teams with the size advantage on defensive match ups won out. Even when people thought the play-in Lakers were in a disadvantage against the 2nd seeded Grizzlies.

It was a lot of shots in transition. Go watch old Bob Cousy clips. Bill Russell was another great outlet passer. Throw the ball ahead, everyone's still running, pass it, somebody takes the jumper, run back.

My only problem with the nba today is how unforgiving foul calls are. Especially offensive. The league said it wouls crack down on players who throw themselves into defenders but I see that happen at least twice a game and the offender gets the call!? Why!?
Defensive players should be the ones who have priority in most cases since they are the ones who have to react more and sometimes even be proactive when they're defending against a certain type of player, lkke Shaq or Curry, or against a certain type of scheme, like the Kings' pacing and spacin offence.

I'm so glad to watch the pacers play like this, I love Tyrese. Every time I hear someone talk about their offense this year I remember what he said in the Paul George podcast about basketball being meant to be played at a high pace. Gotta love them maximizing Tyreses talents and potential as a scorer and playmaker.
Casual viewers prefer easy higher scoring games. Personally, I think players, even high schoolers, have gotten so skilled these days, offenses dont need extra help from the rules/interpretation of the day. If they can make contested 3s and contort their body in such elegant coordinated ways in mid air with contact, then they dont need to be able to travel, carry, and be given the benefit of the doubt regarding fouls.
These guys really took their team's name literally. Better hope Toronto doesn't do the same.

Ever since the league decided to allow the gather step it’s not possible to play defense. The ability to jump backwards and travel into a step back three is too powerful

Thank you for this breakdown! There is so much "its just a 3point contest" hate lately but this video clearly shows there is more going on. If you look at the pace of the 7 seconds or less Suns, they would be last in todays NBA. In general the 90s and 00s were super slow. The 80s however had similar teams to Indiana (Denver!) that with hand checking rule enforced and barely any threes was able to average 120+ ppg because of breakneck pace.
I disagree that the 7 seconds or less Suns would be last. Unless you assume D'Antoni, Nash and those other pieces played the same way they did then in 2023 which is a foolish exercise to begin with. Considering D'Antoni had modified his style when he coached Harden and had shooters around him and still got fireworks for results. You give Suns Nash more space to work with and he'll imitate the same shit offenses are doing to get results with more spacing to work with now.
It is just a 3 point contest though, that is an undeniable fact.
@@lukepatten8308how is it a fact? Most teams shoot about 35 threes and 90 total shots, so 55 are not threes. Plus two of the best teams, Minnesota and Orlando only shoot 30 per game, thats just 4 more than the 7 seconds or less Suns. In 1998 there were multiple teams that shot around 20 threes per game. Its not as bad as it looks from watching just highlights

I used to play Madden religiously in the mid/late 90's through around 2010 when i gave up on the game since they never added anything to it year after year.
Anyways, i used to play 5 min qrts and would have record level stats for multiple positions. Qbs throwing over 5000 yards. Over 50 tds with minimal interceptions. Running back rushing for well over 2000 yards and over 25 touchdows. Receivers getting over 2000 yards and over 25 td. Defensive ends getting over 20 sacks. I could take an outside player on punt returns and dive in every time to make the punter not punt and then get tackled every time so it was a turnover on downs.
My point is at the time i was putting up unrealistic stats compared to real life. Fast forward several years and in real life qbs started putting up insane passing numbers that mimicked what i had done. So the video game comp is accurate to real life sports.

So a lot has been said about how we might be witnessing the peak of the 3-pt revolution but watching players like Haliburton, Jokic, Luka, and Trae among others has me thinking about how these new highs in pace and space might also be ushering a golden age of super high-level, high-volume passers. Could a team that runs deliberately slow offense be the way to slow this kind of offense? Some time in low post? The key to me seems to be that the pacers "bigs" are allowed and can sprint down the court BEFORE the defenders
