Driving a Ferrari 458 GTE at the F1 Austrian Grand Prix track | Henry Catchpole - The Driver's Seat

- There’s a host of ways to get your hypercar kicks on track these days. Specials like Aston Martin’s Valkyrie AMR Pro or McLaren’s Solus or even Ferrari’s own FXX-K Evo all offer circuit-specific thrills. But if you’ve got a couple of million Euros (real or fantasy) to spend then how about a genuine race car, with real pedigree? How about a Ferrari 458 GTE that actually raced at Le Mans, twice?
What makes this Ferrari even more appealing is that its road car counterpart, the 458 Speciale, is one of the all-time greats. And, as Henry Catchpole discovered during his drive, there are clear similarities between the road car and race car. The GTE is, however, definitely louder. A lot louder. And the Speciale is hardly known for being a shrinking violet. But with a 4.5-litre, naturally aspirated V8 at its heart, the mighty wall of noise that emanates from the 458 GTE’s exhaust pipes is ear-splittingly glorious.
Chassis 2874 first raced at Le Mans with AF Corse exactly a decade before this year's victorious Ferrari 499P Hypercar. But arguably its greatest moment at the famous 24 hour race came the year after, in 2014. That year Sam Bird put the car on pole in the GTE AM category but beat all bar one of the Pro cars in the process. It was an extraordinary lap.
In this episode we’re not at the Circuit de la Sarthe but instead in Austria at the beautiful and undulating Red Bull Ring. Why? Well, Girardo & Co (which currently has the car for sale) was part of the excellent Challenge and GT Days event, which hosts a huge collection of Ferrari track cars - everything from a 355 Challenge with a manual ‘box to the latest 488 Challenge Evo. It makes for quite a sight in the pits.

I miss Carfection😢
what happened?
Wait. They’re gone?? They had great content.
@@josephpressinger1525 Money problems. The Ferrari 550 is their last video. Jayemm on Cars make a really in depth video why Carfection failed and you may want to check it out for more context
I’ll watch Catchpole anywhere. And I love new Hagerty stuff. Henry, Jason…beats everything else
That video about manuals with the 911 GT3...
I will *NEVER* forget listening to these 458 GTE's downshift through every gear down the first braking zone at Le Mans.
Yes i remember those very agressive downshifts. Most cars lean on the brakes in the beginning of the braking zone and let the revs drop before downshifting unlike this car which seemed to downshift at the top of the rev range. Never understood why.
Yeah I was there 2011. Was lucky enough to see the Ford GT that was there that year too. And the 787b doing it’s anniversary lap.
@@fattestwhiteguyever757 it's actually because the car has a much higher rev limit than the drivers actually use because of the restrictors, power drops too much. So 7.5k for upshifting, but downshift blips usually go 8k+
The Porsche guys underestimate how loud these were
the 458 marked the start of a golden era for Ferrari. It and the cars that came after it are some of their best.
Henry does an amazing job articulating at the same time he's absolutely blasting by in any car he is in. That's quite special.
Capturing the beauty of a proper racecar on a proper racetrack driven for purely fun! Special thanks to Henry, such a pleasure to listen to him
355 Challenge is easily my favorite Ferrari. Simple, elegant, and what a noise it makes!
So glad I got to enjoy this era live, GTE pro was so good back then
I come back to this religiously. More people really need to know about this episode. All of the work you guys do but this episode in specific. Just wow.
Still remember glued to the screen watching a 458 GT3 (not the GTE) win the '14 Bathurst 12Hr, for the last 2 hour it and a AMG GT3 would swap positions every lap, the 458 faster across the mountain, the AMG better down the straight... Still one of the best battles I have watch.. Beautiful car
"This is just so special, I just....(laughs)" sums it up
I miss this era of GTE/GT2 not because it was better than recent GTE, but because I miss my Flying Lizard Porsches, M3 art car and Larbre's Corvette art car, ESM's Patrón 458s, and Falken's Porsche.
Fortunately for me AF Corse and Corvette Racing have always been in the mix.
Dont forget the Hankook 458
@@fattestwhiteguyever757I think they were third in class that year?
Speaking of Flying Lizard I saw their GTE Pro Art Car and finally understood the reason why people loved the Mezger engines
wearing a lizard shirt right now lol, the golden age of alms imo
Corvette art car by Larbre was great. Looked amazing!
Never Stop Henry ! I like your style, driving this thing must have been wild. Many thanks sir, and many thanks Hagerty.
He makes a good point here. My lottery garage wouldn't have a single track-only hyperwhatever in it. I would pick a choice few historic racing cars (a '60s one, a '90s one, a 21st-century one, a Stratos Gr.4 and a wildcard...) for my track fun instead. It's miles cooler to rock up at Silverstone Classic or Goodwood than it is to have the largest peacock feathers at some vainglorious VIP trackday for the 'gram.
Totally agree. Endurance racing legends, past and present, are priceless compared to limited production rich people shills.
Totally agree, which is why the first car in my lottery garage would be a Lotus Cortina Mk 1. In addition I'll have the MX5 as the MX5 Cup is fabulous racing. a Lancia 037 to compete against your Stratos, a Ferrari 330 P4 to make everyone else go weak and dribbly, and a Datsun 240Z simply because it's my favourite car ever.
there has never been a time when a turbo racecar has sounded better than its predecessor
And there never will be
The sound of the turbos today are limited by the rules too, not just the turbos! If you hear a 488 GTE without the the mufflers you will see how much turbo cars also have wonderful sound
@@MarcSob22I was about to say this, even the 911 gtes now sound muffled compared to the past because of new noise regulations in tracks
So the f40 didn't sound better than the 288gto? 🤔
@@4literv6 Well, the 288GTO was turbocharged.
Reminder: This car is already 12 years old. And what a car it is!
I love these widescreen videos, it's like being at the cinema
I will never forget the sounds these produced. Lucky enough to see these at Petit Lemans with the chrome Patron livery. Banging down the gears into the chicane and back up the hill, louder than any other car around them. Glorious
Wonderful video production, Haggerty. Classy, informative and inspiring
How lucky are we to have such a great story, expressed by such a talent. Your the best out there Henry.
What I love in the sound of the 458 GTE is that it doesn’t sound perfectly smooth but rather sounds a bit raw and a bit crossplane like if that makes sense.
Ever played Gran Turismo?
@@tsifblak9028 not in very long time sadly
I can't hear any cross plane whatsoever from this.
@@ahemgee9542 what I meant by that is that it doesn’t sound totally smooth like a 4 cylinder but still has this typical v8 growl which is exacerbated in a crossplane v8.
@@Charlie-Charlot I think it's because it has a x pipe or something like the secondary exhaust pipes are merged into 1 collector.
WOW How much would i love to drive something like this on my channel, Unreal, Thanks so much Hagerty for constantly bringing us amazing content...
Love that. The way a car sounds is increasingly the most important thing for me.
Amazing work as always Henry
Real epic car. That sound is magic. Forza Ferrari.
Top of the line racing car and beautifully arranged in this video.
Always look forward to these
WoW !! So cool race car. Awesome V8 sound.
The ferrari in 2015 was orgasmic. In the lemans campsite you can hear where they were on the circuit... anywhere on the circuit!!!
so good, really interesting to hear a road-car-tester's perspective on this beauty
Can’t forget seeing a hearing this car at COTA during the WEC race… absolutely amazing sound!!!
Loved the little treat at the end for those who watched till the last second.
I have a Hewland sequential with straight cut gears in my BAC Mono. I never get tired of that whine!
Absolutely. The best. It was almost like the eventual sound it made was a glorious accident 🎉
Fantastic, great job!
As someone who has done numerous track days, raced karts and now races simulated GT3 cars, this is a dream drive!
Love the content 👍🏻
What a sound
This are my kind of car videos , where you almost feel the connection with cars ... i dont know how to explain
Wow, what a thrilling ride!
Amazing machine!!
one of the best sounding car ever period.
great work, what a car!
Wow what a great vid!
What an honour to watch
Thanks Henry!
The v8 in the 458 will always be amazing.
Mr C, you lucky lucky dog, well done! Lovely! Now I want to sell everything sensible I own and get into GTs, damn your eyes.
Well done
Tittle did not disappoint.
Even sim racing this car on Gran Turismo is amazing! Can't imagine real life!
Great video
Excellent
Awesome car, lovely video and review (as always!)…but my favorite best sounding Ferrari V8 video is still the gnarly F40 LM driven by Jacques Laffite!😍
@jameswheeler5025 Not just that! It's the imperfect fueling, the rawness of everything that makes it. The 458 is a great car, very refined! The F40 is just brutal, built for only one purpose: put your foot hard on the gas, anything else and it's not happy...
@jameswheeler5025 I have, and I love them! But check out the video I was talking about...you'll see what I mean! ;)
Definitely needed subtitles for the in-car bits.
Shifting is just instantaneous. Damn!
Sequential transmissions shift even faster than dcts.
I was always fascinated by them, so figured the cheapest way to experience it is by getting a motorbike.
It's satisfying nailing perfect clutchless upshifts faster than a lambos dct transmission, in my small 125cc bike haha
@@siddharthsharma8940 which one did you buy?
Thanks Hagerty !!
Thanks Henry !!
The footprint is 52, my friend, wow, how wonderful, wonderful, Formula racing
Loud Good
I remeber the le mans with this beauti, Fisichella - Bruni - Vilander. What a lineup for a GT car. The F355 also in insane at sound imho
the 458 marked the start of a golden era for Ferrari.
The best Ferrari is the one that has yet to be built.
I always considered my 599 HGTE to be one of the best sounding Ferrari's of all time - clearly I was wrong - thanks Henry - stern and proper stuff
575GTC for me
sounds great fs, but my heart is still with the center exhaust 911 rsr...
Hearing the 911 RSR live at Le Mans was a life-changing experience haha
That engine is a symphonic wonder
The 458 GTE is still one of my favorite race cars. It was so much better then what came before or after.
The 488 is still a good car too
The 360 has aged really well. My pick of the lot.
How beautiful
❤ Sublime! ❤
Aye man you guys gotta do a story about the nascar at Le Mans that is great for America and the whole world of Motorsports
omg...I would probably pass out walking into that.
I just finished building the 488 GTE #51 Lego Set a couple days ago
This is purely ridiculous. I hope to have a go in one of those sometime in this life
Bella!
I just wish that production cars with 4 wheel drive were allowed to race in that formal. Look at what manufacturers are making and then work from there for a racer series.
The 458 GTEs were the loudest cars on the track at the time. No matter the series, you would know when they were running.
Its successors the 488 and the 296 are the most silent cars on the track now.
How Ferrari has fallen!
And the old C6.R GT1 cars...those were LEGENDARY. You could hear them no matter where they were on track.
More on that newey e36 please
It needs to be semi welcoming for the same reason GT3 cars are welcoming. GTE cars are going to be solid to customers the following year
It's a shame there wasn't a single moment in the video without music or somebody talking over the car.
As a guy who loves cars and motorcycles that Ferrari sounds similar to a Yamaha R6. They both just sing to the redline and have this glorious downshifts.
Going to miss N/A ,brutal and savage
Ferrari makes perfectionist
Dream car. Ahhh well, back to Assetto Corsa and the GT2. 😂
check out the 2014 Le mans onboard
Yes it sounds Like the best 4cylinder ever.
Cars must be heard in person, “ at revs” to understand…their true sounds.
Have you heard one in person?
Not even close to a four cylinder.
I’ve been to many racing and vintage events in my 58 years…
The dynamic range of the sound is not captured from mics..
❤
Just
❤️
Dumb question (probably), but can this beat a C8 Corvette setup for road racing? I have doubts, but the 'vette sounds incredible, and is a beast in every way. (nope, I am not a 'Vette fanboy, until a few years ago, anyway)
Do the Ford GT GTE Pro next
Do a video on the fiat Topolino
That's how you set up a car when you do it properly. No stupid farting and crackling when shifting gears (up or down).
😍
Ferrari Redbull
CLICK!
I bet it wouldnt be so friendly once you pull out the restrictor ;)
Ferrari : magic 🪄❤️🇮🇹
IPE F1 exhaust on 458 actually sounds waaaaaaaay cooler
Wait, 2 million euros? I thought well-used racecars like this one would be under $800k!
And fxx evo
I'm not big on racing heritage, but I'd be down for a manual-converted 458 Spider! Bolt down some B-roads on the weekend with the top down, that's the life!
Can you please put one of those spinning fuel-saving performance-enhancing mufflers on its exhaust, its way too loud.
Does anyone know what song is used at the beginning from 0-13 seconds?
1:03 - love seeing a South African flag
Forza Ferrari 💪
Come on lottery win!
