A year and a half ago I thought that this was one of the most confusing tutorial I've come across, but now a few projects and hundreds of tutorial I understand what's going on.
same as me... A year ago I wasnt able to even set keyframes.... now im doing some complex stuff with tons of layers and effects, lummas.
Wow. I've been debating getting AE for ages now. This video solved like, 20 different mysteries for me. Thanks man!
you blew me away mikey, didnt see that one coming.. i love the show. mad respect! awesome tutorial!!
Great tutorial man! The way you tweak the layer modes and map channels it´s mind blowing. Thank you!
Fantastic effect and very well presented. You have a very pleasant voice to listen to. Excellent sir!
this helped a lot bro!!!! thank you so much! I've been searching for this kind of Double Exposure Effect tutorial for a while, but yours is the most detailed and patient one!
Had just finished watching the first episode of True Crime and was "hooked" by the intro alone,,found your tutorial unintentionally, but delighted I did..liked and subscribed :)
Dude, thanks so much for your continuing impressive tutorials. These are great and so appreciated.
One of the best tutorials i've ever seen. Thank's a lot Mikey.
this is aweeesome, thank you for the efforts you made to share all this!
Nice, best one YET!!!!! Your after effects tutorials always rock!
Excellent and really well presented. Not a ton of filler - great job.
Probably you have the best AE tutorials good job.
seriously cool! when i saw the show i thought it was pretty much done like the way you explained - this tutorial was brilliant!
That was great! Since I've seen the title sequence I've wanted to try and pull off that effect. Great Tutorial.
First time I saw True Detective I loved the intro. This tutorial is amazing!
The Edge Blur is a nice touch friend! Thanks for the tips and tutorial!
Hey man thanks so much for making this tutorial, really helped me out a lot on a music video I was working on!
Wow, aside from the effect itself (which rocks), there are also ALL kinds of great tips mixed in this lesson. Thanks!
Good and efficient tutorial! There are so many bad ones with slow and dull voice over (and bad audio) so this was a most welcome exception. Subscribed!
i F***ing love you!! Never thought i would find a tutorial to this man!! awesome job.
Mikey, I noticed in the Season 2 they have improved the credits look and it`s a lot more complex, still the same double exposure. Could you make another tutorial based on this new version? Much appreciated!
BEST Tutorial ever on this effect !!!
Still one of the best double exposure tuts. Thanks.
Awesome tutorial ! Thanks a lot for the tutorial and the video footages!
Such a COOL effect. Gotta love Ae
Really awesome man... thanks for putting this together!
I especially would like to see HBO Borgia opening effect tutorial. I think it's really useful stuff to learn.
camera lens blur is the cause of your render jump. If render time is an issue I usually use fast blur on an adjustment layer that has a feathered mask on it.
Great tutorial. Thanks for posting.
wow thanx a lot.
and what about the true detective 2 intro?
it has a bit a different look.
can you give me some hints or make a tutorial?
Thank you very, very much. It helps so much for my ad i filmed a months ago!
bro you are a magician, good tutorial!
Amazing tut! suscribed as well !
Thanks for sharing this. It was exactly what I was looking for
Thank you sir, this is just brilliant. Great stuff!
Great tutorial! Where can I get more dust elements like the one you included?
I can do this now! Thank you so much!
Great tutorial! How do you begin to figure out which effects are used to create something like this? Is it just familiarity with all the various effects available?
hey, love the video super informative and clear.. would the same effect work without a green screen? for example, if I film a portrait of someone with deep harsh shadow and layer the second video or tree in to the shadows ?
hey mikey, very, very nice tutorial! thx for sharing!!
wow! that is an awesome tutorial!!! very detailed and helpful! thanks so much for your work! God bless :)
This is awesome dude!
Great stuff Mikey! Subbed!
This is really good. Thanks a lot!
this is so sick omg
Great Tutorial, makes me want to do more After Effects! Thanks
I am so happy to have found this tutorial, you did a great job! Thank you. I was just wondering why you created the Aaron Gradient (layer 9)?
that was for the displacement map
***** ah yeah, you're right! Thanks again!
Hey! Loved the tutorial! Is there a way to make his facial features a bit more prominent? Like where you can see his eyes and mouth? Would I just turn the opacity down on the trees layer? Also how would you go about doing maybe half the face double exposure (Left to Right)? Masks?
nice! loved it! i didn't realize it was a displacement map. Always learning from u Mikey, thank you so much!
Thank you! This was awesome!
Hey @Afer Effects Tutorials w/ Mikey ! Thanks so much for the Tut! really helping me with a work project im currently busy with..Just curious , where can i find trees like that to use in my stock footage? trying to find similar ones that aren't copy right, any ideas? Greatly appreciated!
AWESOME!! this tutorial is a thing of beauty
Hey Mikey,
thanks for the upload, your tutorial helped me a lot. I'm still looking for a website where I can download some free stock material like your dust particles. Any idea? Thanks and best regards
Hagen
See i tried this but i was lacking the edge masking and my effect kept falling short i was driving myself crazy thank you so much!!!
This is a great channel and a great video. Thanks Mikey
great lesson as always!
Thank you so much, I'm taking your know how to help pitch my movie, cheers!
Thank you !
That's excellent, thanks a lot.
Awesome! Thanks
What a cool tutorial
Nice tutorial, thank you
Great tutorial!
Fantastic tutorial.
Is there an effect similar to edge blur in the nowadays 2022 AE version? Thank you for a brilliant tutorial
Hi , Mikey I have to say that your tutorials are truly inspirational to me!
I want to do something like this for my video class, would a white backdrop work as well?
Kahdijah Venable white will be harder, but it will still work, its just trickier to get a good roto/key
Cheers for this, really helpful :)
Excelente tutorial!
Nice work!
hey thks bro for this awesome tutorial ^^
As ususally - great tutorial, and we have to say that You outrun us with making it. ;)
THIS IS SO COOL
Hey Mikey, this is a brilliant workshop for AE. Do you have any experience in doing it with Final Cut Pro X? Any hint I would appreciate. Thank you so much.
You´re tut is awesome! Thanks a lot. I'm trying to do something like Taylor Swift's "Style" video, do you think with these tools I can make it?
awesome tutorial
Awesome tutorial... i have always loved true detective and after effects and have always wanted to try making the intro in AE. If you have some solid ae experience and watch this tutorial it really isnt that complicated ^__^ THANX
Brilliant!
Awesome tutorial! I'm fairly new to video editing and this seems like a great challenge for me. I have a bunch of extra footage I was meaning to do something with, but I dont have the luxury of it being green screened like you had. Is it still possible to crop out a subject like you did? I imagine I will need to use a 'lasso' type tool. Any advice? Thanks!
there is the rotobrush tool in AE, but it will be a lot more work.
Great tuttorial Mikey!! I´m having serious problems using keylight, crashes always..
Could you post the project files template itself.. The reason Im asking is because then I could check if some discrepancies is just monitor settings or something minor or if I´m not following propperly .. also to have a chance to find new solutions as well..
thanks a lot I´ve been using preseted tenplates like double exp generator and double exp machine and its allright but doing it freely is really cool also, just the keylight issue is really annoing
Thank you So much!
great job, thanks
great! please can you tell me what kind of computer you using Mike?
Excellent tute man, just interested, what computer are you running on in this tutorial?
2.8 gig i7 iMac, its 2.5 years old, and 16 gigs of ram.
cool stuff!
this is awesome!

Thanks for the video Mikey - it makes me look a lot cooler than I probably really am. What would we all do without After Effects?
#aftereffects #aftereffectstutorial
What exactly is the purpose of the shape layer? Thanks so much for this tutorial! Awesome job!
I wanted the tree image to fade out as it reached the top.
***** Thanks man! I figured that was it. Thanks!
Good tutorial ! i really wanna ask, can i use this effect on two video, double exposure.
There are so many variations and possibilities. you can fo whatever you want
can you do this effect with moving images as well as photo stills ? and nice work :) !
Hi! Thanks a lot for the tutorial! Is there a chance to find the footage somewhere still? Would be super helpful! The link is not working
Great Stuff, well Done.
Oh man! I'm 10 years late to do this tutorial! Does anyone know a good place to find dust particle clips and the like? Thank you for your work, Mikey!
Thank you so mucj man
Can you do The Affair opening credits sequence.
Your amazing man
Hello Mikey, great tutorial and result! I'm planning on using this technique for a project.
What would be your recommendation for lighting the subject so that the displacement map is the most effective ? I notice the light on your subject was really on the side, do you think it's important to have high contrast on the subject?
Thanks !
I actually decided to do the displacement after I had filmed it. Ideally you will want it to be brightest at the nose, and then fade toward the back. so maybe a light straight on with the front of the face, with a soft fall off. So you will want it to be bright down the middle of the face, and darker around the sides and the ears. Hope that helps.
***** Great, thank you very much, really helpful.
Now i need to find a way to light the subject that way, maybe with a low intensity point light very close to it?
I would do a small soft box straight on to the face. Or any kind of diffused light.
***** Thank you again ! Great channel you have !
***** By the way you said you didn't know exactly how they did the hbo title sequence, very inteersting explanation here : www.artofthetitle.com/title/true-detective/
They did 3d models of some elements, your technique is a bit easier but still good looking :)
is it okay to use a white screen instead of green?
i cant find the track mat list
