In celebration of the gritty, awesome HBO series True Detective, we dive into Photoshop to re-create the look from the series intro. Accompanied by music from The Handsome Family, we'll be using layer masks, Clipping masks, and gradient maps to create that signature True Detective look on a 1920x1080 canvas, fully layered. You can even use your own images and turn yourself into a member of the Louisiana PD.
Note these images are for educational purposes only and images from True Detective are Copyright HBO. - Jak na to + styl
I've seen a shit load of double exposure tutorials lately and while the effect is sadly overused, this is one of the better tutorials I've seen on it. Good job.
Thank you very much Joe, Hopefully it's a good balance of old-school technique that gives people a foundation to use on other, less trendy projects.
I haven't had the chance to watch the full tutorial yet - I just skipped through parts but I'll definitely be doing the entire thing sometime.
Also, there is a broken link to the source images. (That's why I didn't do the tut actually).
I went through almost all the double exposure tutorials on youtube, but this is by far the best one I have come across ..! good job..!
i like your way of editing. other photoshop editors want everything to be easy and quick but you take your time to even cleaning up details. nice!
Ryan, i just subscribed after watching your pixel art tutorial, your clarity in these videos is amazing. Excellent and clear instructions and enjoyable to learn. Please keep sharing your skills. Thankyou.
Been looking for a new photographic project to keep me motivated through the winter months and after stumbling across this excellent tutorial today I'm definitely motivated to give this a try: the results look great! I'm aware of the True Detective intro but not yet seen any of the series itself so can't wait to check that out too. Big thumbs up man: appreciate the time and effort as well as the nudge in the right direction creatively!
a really light hearted video didn't even feel like a lesson. love your style thank you man
hey ryan. i thoroughly enjoyed that tutorial. i have been wanting to learn how to do that for a while you explained it very clearly, not too fast, not too slow. and you were quite entertaining and humble along the way. thanks very much for this! i look forward to watching some of your other tutorials! -alan
Alt+Ctrl+G at minute 09:49 for all the non Mac users :)

+Ubital Lol she's a lady yo!
idk i kinda like the "King" title lol ;)
wow that gradient map option is something i've never used, it's great!
Really an exceptional and artistic intro, and it was fun to watch you do this :)
Great tutorial!
I can't thank you enough for making these awesome techniques so clear!!!
Without a doubt the best tutorial out there! Thanks a lot man.
I absolutely loved season 1 of True Detective! Killer editing video, btw, thanx!
Whoa man, I gotta say thanks so much for this. I haven't messed with photoshop in years and i had been dying to make something with an effect like this for my favorite show arrow! BIG thanks for this as your tutorial really helped me out.
This is such a great tutorial! I've seen quite a few other double exposure tutorials and this is the best one I've seen by far :) Thanks so much for sharing your wisdome!
Thanks, Sarah Ashley that's very sweet of you to say.

What is the Name of the Tool you use @ 10.13 Thanks
Awesome video and awesome TV show!
Best intro to a Photoshop tutorial...EVER!!!
Thank you for the great details you talked about. I've watched different tutorial but they used actions and I didn't know what the actions really do. But now I know it. thank you and good luck.
Amazing tutorial Ryan - thanks for going slow enough and talking about the details!
Thanks Stephanie!
Great tutorial! The best one so far I´ve found. Thanks. Thumbs Up
AWESOME !!!!!! THANK YOU RYAN FROM FRANCE !!!
Congrats, great tutorial. Keep doing an amazing job.
Great tutorial! This was exactly was I looking for :) Thanks, it's very well explained. However, I think I would have chosen a different background, but that's just a personal opinion :)
I am looking for a tutorial as well for getting the style of "The Walking Dead" intro images. Wouldn't you happen to have one of those as well?
Thank you!
so good. I loved the first season a LOT and am really enjoying season 2.
Roxanne Perdue Good to hear it :)
This stuff helped me to create a couple of posters for conferences. Great!
That was a really good walkthrough. Thanks mate!
Your video really saved my life. Your a hero!!!!
Glad to hear, and thank you!
Any reason you didn't just use the quick selection tool to mask? Or even the pen tool?
You actually went through and hand-painted without the refine edge? I'm impressed
This tutorial was awesome! You are the best!!
But.. I had a problem when I tried to make my own collage, and is.. how do you combine the layers with the main mask layer? what command do you use on your keyboard? I can't find this and I am going crazy, really.
I hope someone can help me.
Thanks!
Why not use the Pen Tool for the mask, & "refine edge" for the hair? Why not After Fx for this type of motion work?
Best tutorial ever man! Hands down!!!!
This is so so cool! Thanks for the great tut
you should do the gradint map after you have made the face visible. it easier to see how it will change the faces visiblity
Imo best double exposure tutorial
Thanks Ryan! Really Helpful.
very nice tutorial dude!
pro tip: always use the pen tool to remove/change the background.
Thanks mate! With your tutorial, I could deliver my work to my client
Thank you. This tutorial was so helpful.
Thank you a lot, but may I know how to make it(the figure images and the background) dynamical, move as you did? Thank you!
Very rad. Thanks for sharing this
really good result! thanks you!
Thats why i love the internet! Thats what exactly i was looking for. I would like to give you a warm handshake for that great tutorial but since i cant i will give you a thumbs up and a subscribe.
Marios Paparizos Thanks Marios. Let me know what I should cover next.
Hi Ryan,
just started watching this show a few days ago and the opening sequence blew my mind! You've done an amazing job here.
have a quick question, do you have any idea as to whether this could be achieved on Krita? I'm not sure if you've used the software yourself or not, but if you have, do you have any knowledge on it?
Great tutorial! I really want to create a photo of myself with this effect!
Go for it man and share it here!
can't u just use the quick selection & refine edge for the hair..?
well, he would have been able to do this...
+Simon Robeyns I cried watching that method.
+dreamlessDREAM3R true haha
same here
+Simon Robeyns he could, but the photo isn't on white background and it would make it harder to select. Guess he's used to the method, as well.. dunno.
+ooozeGonnaSubscribe well just do a quick curves adjustment on the channel that has the most contrast then. You could still go ahead and remove stuff that you don't want in your selection.
Why didn't you use the Lasso or Pen tool to cut the background?
how do I clip the layer underneath in windows I'm a beginers. I tried control but not working
thank you Ryan
good tutorials clear and easy
Amazing!! I love it! Thanx.
Just finish! And want to say THANK YOU SO MUCH :) The only problem i had was at 10:13 that i'm not able to resize the image (i'm using PC). Btw inspiring tutorial!
Excellent tutorial
Awesome video!!
Great tutorial! This is inspiring me to create something of my own :)
Thanks ! Learned a lot!
Thank you Ryan
Great tutorial. Thanks.
thats awesome, cant wait until i get the hang of photoshop so i can create pieces of works like this
at 9:49 for Mac Users, just hold down option and hover the mouse over the line that divides each of the layers. You'll see a little down arrow icon appear. Then click.
So Great.iam very impressed.Thank you.😊
Amazing!
perfect and great job
such a fantastic tutorial...Thank you so much :)
You're a BOSS. Thank you!
Nice tutorial man !!
Great tutorial - thx!!
Very helpful! Many thanks!
great work bro
Excellent!
Thanks, this was really helpful!
Thank you. Really helped me.
THANKS! Amazing tutorial. I just made my new icon on CZcams with this tutorial :D
I think it is easier to create a selection to remove. Thanks for share
it is, but if you take more time than i did here, then you can do wonderful semi-transparent hair strands that really help a subject melt into the world.
I don't see the option to select Photographic Toning, or any others from that list within Gradient Maps
great tutorial, but everything goes well until 13:12 when i try to copy or duplicate the original photo with the mask something goes wrong; the two background photos used suddenly appear underneath the original masked first photo , how do you copy it exactly or how can i avoid what happened
Thanks for the tutorial!
Thank you very much that's so cool!
Got stuck at 9:40 when you say option key. For PC users it's the Alt key, and you don't just click the image. There's an icon that pops up and allows you to make a Clipping Mask... just in case you got stuck like I did.
Stellar ~ Thanks!!
13:19 since then I'm lost. What should I do so that I can return to the same form on a white background? when I'm doing everything in order at this step they jump me - the character - both the background, which does nothing I can not get rid of.
Very useful. Thanks a lot :)
EXCELLENT tutorial!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANKS!!!!!
brilliant mate
Are you using snap to pixel for your mouse? Or are you just really good at keeping your hand still?
this work both, CC and CS6? Great work btw!
very good tutorials .thanks you very much
when i go to make a new file and add the adjustments it doesn't open to that size? anything i need to know?
Excelente... Gracias.
good stuff, smooth
I can't get the initial mask in the first step to work. I create the mask layer and select the paint brush with black and it isn't erasing. Any thoughts?
thanks, great tutorial!!!
i'm stuck at 13:00 though - If I copy the first layer and drag it on top I "lose" the clipping masks of both images... am I doing anything wrong?!
+Yannick Schmidt solved it. gotta drag the original rather than the copy... ;)
Ctrl+Alt +(Drag& Drop) at minute 13:06 for all the window users :)
late but thanks :-)
Maybe I'm an idiot, but can someone explain to me how to do something like in 7:42 - display mask instead of actual picture?
Nice man ,keep it up
Nice tutorial.
very good!!
Thank you !
Why didnt you use refine edge tool??
at 13:35 almost all of the adjustments are grayed out for me? what did i do wrong and how do I fix it?
Ok, so the best effect (I think), in this intro, is the fact that the overlays are both 'motion' pictures...they're videos. The slow motion movement creates a mood entirely different from still images. Any tutorials that actually replicate this intro?
Hmmm. They probably use the opacity option to blend together 2 different layers of images?
Sarah Le Blend modes, and Luma or Alpha masks is my guess. Not sure why he would use photoshop instead of After Fx for this.
