  • We all love a deal and V-Twin Manufacturing has the deals on twin cam big bore kits! You can take your 88 to a 95, 96 to 103, or 96/103 all the way to a 110 for less than you might expect. With the saving you'll have money left over for a new set of cams. If you already have a set of performance cams these kits are a great way to get to that next step of performance.

      Neither at first. I took my 2007 96” to about the same output as a 103 by adding Andrew’s 37H cams, power commander V, Performance Machine Intake w/ K&N filter, Vance & Hines long shots. 77Hp and 90 tq. Pretty happy with the results as it gave me great mid range and useable power. To get anymore I’d have to go bigger than 103 imo since, the cams would/should be changed no matter what bigger bore kit there is to go to.
      PS: I’d love to see a video explaining dynamic compression vs. static. Most folks don’t grasp the importance of that and you explain stuff pretty well.

      No sir, not from what I can tell. Maybe a little oil but not enough to notice yet. Wouldn’t even know it but for the plug. Recently bought it with 12k on it. Plug mildly fouls on base an just on a small portion of the insulator is blackened. , but nothing hindering starting, etc. now that I have reacquainted myself with a carburetor. And on carburetors, I don’t think I’d ever want fi again, at least on a heritage. Smoothest ride I’ve ever been on. I think it’s early stage wear on the seal, so one day, I figure I’ll buy up a complete gasket kit and get the tensioners as well. Im definitely budget minded and really love how quiet the engine is. I suspect that a gear drive cam might annoy me. Now don’t get me wrong, it’s got D&D fat 🐈 2-1 on it that sound loud and mean, but the engine is so quiet that pipes have freedom to be heard as they are meant to be! 😂

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  Před 3 lety +2

      That D&D is a damn good pipe, it makes some power on a Harley! It definently sounds you have a valve seal. If it's running good and not causing a major problem l'd give her hell and just keep an eye on it. Unless your getting some blow by in that cylinder, but with 12k miles that shouldn't be happening. If it was a fuel injected bike l would be looking at the VE on that cylinder. Being carbed it's definently mechanically, unless there is some fluke by that cylinder getting more fuel.

      Kevin Baxter did a fairly comprehensive video on plugs that made it clear to me that it at least involves a seal in the way white specks gather on the lower conductor. That differs from ring symptoms. Put me at ease cause that type of detail was hard finding. It’s 15-16 years old, and, as I tell my wife : it’s our Harley-Davidson. And we should expect for me to get to know it well. It’s a keeper for sure.

  • @johndonkor243
    @johndonkor243 Před 3 lety +5

    All I will say is sometimes we pay for intangibles, like customer service. If you ever deal with Fuel Moto, you would have no issue paying their prices for their kits. The product knowledge and support from those guys is unreal. They stand by what they sell, and have seen and done it all.
    These budget kits are fine for budget rebuilds for salvage bikes, but I'd be concerned with prices that low. In short, it's probably worth it to eat Kraft Dinner for an extra 2-3 months if it means you can get something quality that will last. Just my humble opinion...

I have a 2000 fxst that runs like a violated great simian… i just acquired a 2001 fxst for cheap from a friend… a twin to my runner… it only needs a little wiring and periphery and it’ll be a second runner. So that’s a basic stable. Two runners… once those are both up and solid, I’ll be acquiring an 88tc motor… it could be busted, but best for cheapest will be the opp i take. So I’ll work that motor on the benches over the winter, and get it solid… the first runner that takes a poop, I’ll do a straight swap! That’s my goal: total independence…

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  Před 3 lety +2

      The valve springs are dependent on the cam you're using. You can run a performance cam that will work with the stock valve springs even with these big bore kits. You can run a big bore kit with the stock heads and cams, but the stock cams are really going to hold it back. You'll get some gain but not nearly what you would with a aftermarket cam swap, even with one that works with the stock heads and valve springs.

    I just picked up a 2007 Softail custom with 11.000 miles. Does this have cam chain tensioners? Does this need a better oiling system like the 88's did? • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  Před 2 lety +2

      The 2007 has the updated hydraulic tensioners so no worries there, the 2007's have a compensator that can be an issue. They basically took the compensator from the 88 and carried it over to the 96 which has been know to fail. When you go with a new cam or any upgrades you'd benefit from a cam plate and high volume oil pump while you're in there with the new cam.

      The gear set is expensive and you'll have to check the shaft run out, it's going to have to be .002 or less. That way if you're out of spec your not stuck with a cam set you can't use or you have to tear down the entire motor to have your crank redone. A great alternative is upgrading the the hydraulic tensioners, it's a lot cheaper and you don't have to worry about shaft run out.

Twin Cam engines love compression, 10.5:1 is a big power jump and it's still streetable without knocking on pump gas. Yes, twin cam cylinders can be over bored several times for a basic rebuild with corresponding pistons to match the bore. What Hammer does is bore to max allowable tolerance to get the 98", you lose any further over bore but you'll get years and say 100K miles out of the motor. Yes, a cam swap is the absolute best bang for the buck. Especially with a 103, a 103 with the right cam will produce close to 100 horsepower even with the stock compression. Now if you take a 103 and 10.5:1 compression with a cam, power will jump to well over 100 horsepower.

      The 100 kit is the largest you can go with a stock 88 motor.
      If you put a stroker crank in the bottom end then it will take the motor up to 110 as long as you install a stroker piston with the same 4 inch cylender. With the stroker crank you absolutely have to use a stroker piston because the stock piston will contact the head and lock up.
