Harley Twin Cam Chain Tensioner Replacement with Push Rod Removal Complete - Part 2
Vložit
- čas přidán 1. 02. 2022
- Part 2 in this series continues with the installation of the secondary tensioner using the tool specifically for this task. On this bike the oil pump was removed for inspection so a special task was done to re-align the pump, this is not normally part of the procedure but necessary for a pump repair or swap.
The cam alignment should be conducted before the cam carrier unit is reinstalled into the bike. The dashes should face each other as shown in the video.
A further centering procedure is required for the oil pump, only if the pump was removed from the unit.
On reassembly lifters should be returned to the same direction they were removed from.
The breather on this bike was epoxied together at the factory and not designed to be split, this may be the same for earlier bikes.

What kind of crazy video is this? No Music , No jabbering, No Stuttering, No Umms, Errrs, Uhhs? Clear concise, to the point, NO BULLSHIT, and possibly the most understandable mechanical disassembly/assembly video I've ever seen... Subbed, Rang the Bell, and looking forward to anything else you care to share... BRAVO!
Thanks!
Unbelievable. He did all that and didn't cut the pushrods with bolt cutters. It CAN be done!. Purely educational video done very professionally. Bravo
It can be done, but it is a little easier, and less expensive if you do it more than once, to have adjustable push rods. He did remove the rocker boxes. What I didn't see him do was replace bearings or clean out screen sock.
Probably one of the best videos I've ever watched! Not a bunch of wasted footage-straight and to the point with torque values mentioned.
Hands down best video made to address tensioner assembly replacement. Thank you.
You're welcome!
Perfect, informative,no stories about a dog,cat and a bird. No B.S. got right to the point!!
He missed a few points
Man !!!!! this guy is good best video I've seen yet..
Thank you!
Excellent content. What's not to like? Subscribed.
A TC88 is for life, take the rough with the smooth. Had a 1340 fxdl for around 10 years, wasn't going to go with the TC but got a '99 FXDL as a full restore project. Best video I've seen but I would lock the inner tensioner from the outside to aid cam install, lower back down gently.
I can't say anything else that hasn't already been said, except Thank you for sharing. Very well explained on a Professional level.
You’re very welcome.
my Harley Road king was stopped for six months, thanks to your video my bike came back to life
What an excellent presentation -- I feel like I now have a thorough understanding of camchain tensioner removal and replacement. I have a 2003 Dyna Low Rider and at 32,000 miles my inner shoe was completely worn out and broken. I caught it in time and based on your Part 1 and Part 2 videos I have completed tensioner replacements. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.
Your editing was off the charts. Great video!
Just such a pleasure to watch a professional work and listen to him clearly explain his process and knowledge. Thanks for the great work.
Absolutely fantastic video. I have an old twin cam with a ton of miles so I have done this a bunch by now. Your video is the best I have seen to date, and you explain the engine timing procedure very well, something that most of them skip on. Thank you so much for this!
Do you have to do the oil pump procedure every time ?
One of the Best Twin cam Cam Chain tensioner replacement videos on the Net, definitely a must watch video for those attempting to do this work on their Harley, Great job, thanks for making this Video.
You’re welcome. Glad you found it helpful
Soon i will need to change those plastic tensioners, and this video is simply gold
Thanks.
That was one of the most informative videos I've seen on CZcams
I will say it again 'best instructions on this job, period'.
Thank you. Glad it was helpful.
@@delorean1 I have a question. When I remove camplate it will be marked as it comes out with locking tool in place, I'm leaving oil pump in situ, when I reinstall do I still need to do the aligning process, or will it be in line still as I have removed it?. Thanks.
Excellent video; I have 23,000 miles on my 2005 and will be replacing my cam chain tensioners. Thanks.
Good luck!
The correct way to do it....Well done 👍
Thank you.
THANK YOU! very good step by step ! have a great day!
Your video is amazing! Walked through step by step, you make this look easy!! I will be replacing my cam tensioners on my Twin Cam eventually and I am sure this video will be an excellent guide for that job. Thanks!
Just completed mine, I would not have done this without your clear and concise tutorial. Saved me lots of dollar, thanks very much and ride safe 😎
You're welcome!
I've got to do mine I guess I'm gonna have to buy some tools an all ,I e got the tensioners an gaskets ,thanks for the videos brother just kinda dreading it ,but the sooner I get started the sooner I get done.😁wish me luck 🤞
How long did it take you to do it?
Very nice instructional. I just used this to do my 02 Fatboy. Thanks for your help
un saluto dall'Italia e grazie per aver condiviso il tuo lavoro
Thank you for providing the knowledge and confidence needed to attempt this on my 2001 Road King. A gem of a tutorial from narration to camera work.
Glad you enjoyed it and found it helpful.
Extremely well done. Best video of it’s kind I’ve ever seen.
Thanks much.
Good instructional video. I have a 2000 FLSTC and during COVID lockdown I did the teardown, but replaced the stock camplate with hydraulic chain tensioner, new cam bearings, cams, oil pump and lifters. On the top end replaced the oil breather sponge, flapper valves and o-rings. Also installed rocker lockers which did quiet down the top end. Thanks again for the great video.
Did your breather assembly come apart easily to replace the flapper valves? These were glued together.
Did this last winter. I suggest if anyone is doing this, to upgrade to the shoes made with Stanyl Polyamide the ones from "Cyco Gaskets" and not the stock Harley crap. Also, always replace the crap Harley INA inner cam bearings with torrington bearings. Always good practice to upgrade Harley parts because Harley engineers have shit for brains!
Great Video!! Although I am still afraid, I will get everything apart okay, But, when it comes to putting everything back together, Oh boy!! My Shovelhead I had back in the mid 80's was the last time I attempted to work on my Harley. I also had a great friend that rode and worked on Harleys forever. He had a garage at his house and every tool imaginable. A great friend that helped me anytime I needed it. Then in 2000 I bought an 883 Sportster that was brand new and only needed maintenance which Harley would do, because I moved away from my buddy. A few years later after selling the too small 883, I bought a low rider which Harley Dealership also did the work on, this was back in 2004. Since then, I haven't ridden until last month when I went and bought a 2001 Dyna. I have hardly any tools and no friends that can help me, also no money since I became disabled and can't make the money I used to make!! So, I HAVE to learn to do this myself or sell the bike I just bought. Which selling it is out of the question since I'm way older and disabled, if I sold it I'd probably never ride again!! So, this video really helped! So far, I haven't checked for wear on the tensioners, since I don't ride much at the moment. Now it's time to buy some tools a bit at a time so I can at least check the tensioners before I ride again. I need sockets, wrenches and the gaskets to check them. Get that done hopefully this month, and just keep watching these two vids over and over again, so if I need to replace them, I'll have a better understanding of what is involved and hopefully get the sucker put back together correctly!! Rding makes my old, broke, disabled butt feel a heck of a lot better!! No way would I even attempt this job if I had not seen this video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!
Glad the video helped.
And, never underestimate the psychological power in the words "I ride a Harley-Davidson." Uttered to one-self quietly, and to others in full voice.

@@delorean1 It did. I actually needed tensioners. I caught it literally just in time. There was a big chunk missing sitting in the bottom of the cam chest. I touched the tensioner and it fell apart in my hand. Luckily there was only 1 big chunk of plastic in the cam chest. Nothing else. I wound up putting in an S and S mod. New hydrolic tensioners. Better oil pump. And since repairing I put about 1200 miles on it. If I had started that bike one more time it would’ve been a boat anchor!! Thank you God!!!
i just want to say thank you! great video, i used your video as a follow along guide for changing my tentioners.
Absolutely THE BEST how to on this project. Thank you so much for the time you put into this. I just picked up a 2000 Road King
with 15k miles. This will be the first thing I do when I get it back to my shop tomorrow.
Again...... THANK YOU!!
Your very welcome, glad it was helpful.

This is a superb video. So helpful. Thank you for posting.
Thanks. Glad you found it helpful.
Excellent video.
You covered all the technical issues and made certain the video was clear so the average guy could see and would know what he was up against. I never priced this job at a dealer, it would probably run into the $400 neighborhood. 75% of it labor.
Many thanks.
I will be doing mine this week. This video gives me an extra degree of confidence.
400$??? keep going, 400$ would get you through the door.

you covered pretty much everything and this is the budget way. No expensive 'upgrade' kits- just fix what's broken. Love it. You didn't replace the inner cam bearings but from the vid- they looked okay. Thanks again for making these vids.
You're welcome, I tried as close as possible to follow the workshop procedure.

Thank you for posting these videos. I've been looking for something like this as I can't afford the gear drive setup or hydraulic tensioner upgrade pushed by H-D. Very helpful and presented in a way that's easy to understand. I will be doing my 2003 FXDWG soon.
Glad I could help

Great video man, very informative without any bs. Thank you. I would like to ask a couple of questions: how many miles were on those tensioners? And why didn’t you updated to the new hydronic tensioner? Thanks again.
Outstanding....thank you
Glad you liked it!
Brilliant as the 1st tutorial
Thank you.
Thank you for a great video! I will be attempting to do my ‘03 Softail, I’ve pulled my cover and the inside tensioner is worn deep but not to metal yet , so no more riding it till I replace it. I will rewatch this video and take full written notes and get everything prepped.
Thanks again! 😁
Good luck!
