- This rifle is fully Australian-made by Lithgow Arms. My rifle is chambered in 22.LR and it performed well with a variety of ammo. I'd recommend the 42gr Winchester Power Points as the better performer as it shot well at both 50 and 100 yards. The rifle overall is well made, it's well priced at $995 and they have other calibres planned - 22mag 17hmr 223rem and 308win!

I just bought one of these today as well as an LA105 .308. Partly because they're both Australian made and their great.
Also purchased a Warwick WFA1L .223 with a changeable .300 barrel today. Another great Australian manufacturer.
After your review on the LA 101 i went and purchased one this morning with Redfield rings and Scope from Halls Gunshop here in Townsville QLD...Just waiting for my Licence to be approved then can take this baby home ...i Also worked at Lithgow Small Arms factory.many years ago and i'm very pleased that i can support Local ...once again cheers for a great Review...

That is one great looking ( and shooting rifle ). I am excited to see civilian firearm manufacturing return to Australia. Since I live in the US I don't know why I am excited, just a brothers in arms thing I guess. That shoulder stock and comb look very well thought out for scope use. And the barrel is a beautiful thing. Hopefully Lithgow can get a few of these to the US market. I will say however, the sticker shock when I see your videos gives me heart palpitations. We are kind of spoiled here when it comes to price due to massive competition for firearm sales. Thanks for the video, looking forward to the next. Cheers.

They will be half the price in the US just like the powder we make here and sell in the US, Powder here for 500g is around the 55.00 mark yet in the states around 20.00 go figure eh.

Mate, thanks for this video, greatly appreciate. I owned a family heirloom Brno mod 1 22LR for years until it was stolen in a B&E several years ago. I could not bring myself to replace the Brno, originally bought by my parents back in the early 50's for the rabbits on the farm, but this video has prompted my to stop grieving (yes still grieving, a great personal loss) and move on. I've shot many firearms made at Lithgow and have shot on their range many times, back in the 70's. They were great people then and looks like they are still the same.
I will be buying 2 of these magnificent rifles, LH and RH.

Finally got my LH LA101.... 3 more sleeps til shootin day!!!! hahaha (Sunday 2/7/2015) dammit!! Will be using Winchester coppers to shoot it in, got a few others to try, but was impressed with those CCI miniMax.
Will be shooting it in using tried and true method of shoot 2, clean shoot etc etc..... Using copper coated to get clear indication of fouling.
No one has mentioned to roo in the background at 24:25? Amazing......

Bought a second hand one yesterday that is still in mint condition. I was shooting it all afternoon with a Vortex 4-16 scope from a bipod. Only had some federal champion ammo and after taking 5 shots to get zero i popped 5 shots through 2 holes at 50m while it was gusty. This is now my favourite toy!
I really enjoy all of the reviews that you do - I even bought a Tikka T3 CTR in a .308 on the strength of one of your reviews! This review was no exception, I enjoy the honesty of the reviews as much as anything else. I also liked the dog's cameo appearance!!! Hilariously @ 24:25 to 24:28 look at 9 o'clock ... between the dog and a, clearly, good shot there is someone prepared to run the gauntlet. So funny! :-)

Ozzie, I have had my left handed LA 101 for 2 years and love it I found that it needed to be run in about 500 rounds, and to the gunsmith for a trigger job, I must admit that I prefer the CZ mags, I am considering purchasing a 22 mag. This rifle is up there with the best of the medium priced quality 22.lr rifles.

Thanks for the review mate. I'm looking at getting my first rifle and tossing up between a 22LR and a .17HMR. I'm not super keen on going out plinking hundreds of rounds at a time and I'll be looking at doing plenty of fox and goat shooting as well as some target/match shooting. I'm fairly certain I'm not going to get everything I want out of the one rifle but maybe a Lithgow LA101 22LR with a Leupold 3-9X40 might serve me well until I can add another rifle to my collection.
I picked up mine yesterday in the laminate stock. Put through 300 rounds from 8 different brands and all of them hitting sub moa at 25metres. I am very impressed with this rifle!

Thanks for the review. Great job and glad to hear you are well. Just purchased the crossover and put a ziess 3-9x42 terra balistic reticle with Leopold rings. As you say its not the cheapest riffle once paired with a decent scope but after taking the hit initially it makes for a fun little bench riffle that you can shoot all day for peanuts. I really feel for new shooters at the range that drop 2 grand on a 308 only to be able to afford 20 rounds a session. Thanks again!

Yes my friend Brett from the Pro shop at Springvale SSAA VIC Range fitted a scope for me so I could send a few and once I dialled in was very impressed with my groups and all done with federal I am very happy with it

Really nice piece of kit. Only run a couple hundred rounds of CI through it. Couldn’t fault it. CZ mags are a little tight in the fitting department, so far no jams. Perfectly weighted, fairly precise considering it’s brand new.
Bolt is buttery smooth, safety has a definite solid click.
Most importantly, with the groups my young fella pulled off he loves it.
The Lithgow that my Dad and I picked up was probably the best purchase we have made so far in firearms. With a better trigger spring and match ammo, the thing will shoot hole through hole easily if you do your part. I personally use it for benchrest smallbore shoots which sounds silly when I am sitting next to guys with $4000+ rifles, but honestly this rifles shoots like it was an Anschutz(That we also have) or a Fienwerkbau.
Whilst we haven't had it hunting, I can say offhand that it is great for shooting Metallic Silhouette. I can shoot a 1/5 scale ram at 100m pretty easily (Standard Velocity Ammo).
Honestly if you are looking for what the name implies 'crossover', don't give it a second thought.

***** will let you know, the ISSC straight pulls are being sort after atm, we got two in a couple weeks ago, one sold when we was unboxing it, the other the next day. Got 5 in last week and 1 sold that day. Feel more solid than the PWS action wise, only let down IMHO they went for a staright 10 shot mag.
Yeah that's interesting to know, it's one of my favourite things about the PWS is the mags, it makes for a fun day of plinking...
@Martin Mio - no, groups here are still measured in inches, so unless you're in Europe you'll find in the shooting world inches and pounds are commonly used here in Australia… take a look at the ranges, still measuring targets at 100 yards, 200 yards etc…
+ozziereviews to be honest, in the Army we always measured our groups in MM.
Simon Smith well, in my non-extensive experience as a grunt, and guys I knew who joined as far back as the 80s and 90s, they all had to use measure groupings in mm in order to be AIRN compliant, Infantry have to be less than 150mm(within a battalion its 110mm though) @ 200 metres with a 20rnd magazine prone unsupported on a fig11. All other Corps have to have a 200mm grouping with the same parameters in order to be AIRN compliant.
Of course that is just rank and trade qualification range shooting. In the field it is just, target indication, fire centre of seen mass. Or in that general direction with the section wpns.

Great insight to a great rifle. When can we expect a performance review on the LA102? I'm waiting for a bit of feedback on the LA102 before I add another Lithgow to the safe.
just bit the bullet so to say and purchased on of these fine Aussie made rifles.
Shot it out to 400m at Little River SSAA and managed to hit a A3 size target in 12klm gusts of wind.
I am extremely happy with rifle the only thing that I do not like about the rifle is the magazine as some times sits a bit low and will not chamber a new round you have to push it up a bit.
Steven Micallef Glad to hear you're happy Steve. As for the mag, I'd call Lithgow and ask them about the new mags they sent out after the rifle was released. I think there was a risk of a minor issue similar to what you're describing, I'm not 100% sure, but I didn't have any issues with mine… might be worth a call tho?

Maybe they will ad 17WSM in this rifle. This video is old now .4 years. That WSM is a good cartridge. I have a heavy barrel Savage and a light barrel Savage in that , and love both of them. The light rifle is a great stalking rifle. The heavy one is very accurate and a good long range shooter.

I haven't fired a shot since 1999 but have always maintained a passing interest in the shooting scene. Now that my son is 12 and wants to shoot i joined us both up for SSAA and started the process of getting a license. I was going to buy one of the Ruger American Rimfires mainly for the swappable full/youth size stock so my son could comfortably shoot it. Having watched this vid I'm pretty sure i'll get a crossover now. What is the shortest length of pull with all spacers removed?
I can always use a slip on pad Hickok45 style when i want the extra length.
Good to hear you're getting back into shooting and including your son! As for the LOP, I did a rough measurement: 33cm with no spacers and each spacer is approximately 1cm...
Bought one today! My first rifle,was always going to get one of these but wasn't my first choice for no1 (close,was a toss up)but i got shafted on an old Brno i had paid a deposit on and wanted to get my PTA today and there was nothing (at least decent used at dealers i went to, better far more pricey new stuff naturally) could compare price and performance with the lithgow. Ended up with laminate which also wasn't my first choice but was no walnut in stock and i wanted threaded muzzle and laminate was only option.
The laminate stock looks amazing to me, I love them!
Yeah, i like it a lot more in person than i did in pictures.I did originally want walnut but I actually did prefer the look of laminate over it in real life,plus the whole fact that's its inert.

Very informative review. I performed roughly the same test at 50 yds, outdoors, with a bunch of 22LR ammo in a Crossover. My results - RWS Rifle Match - 0.33", Remington 22 Cyclone - 0.53", SK Std Plus - 0.57", Federal Gold Medal - 0.67", Winchester Power Point - 0.69", SK Rifle Match - 0.74", Winchester Bushman - 0.82", Lapua Center-X - 0.88", Highland High Impact - 1.06". Shooting side by side with a Sako Finnfire II, very similar results but the ammo order was different for the Sako (except for the RWS Rifle Match - 0.23" and also top).

G’Day Ozzie. I’ve been a Sako Centerfire user all my life, like you love the Aussie made idea and after watching your reviews I am going to buy a Lithgow but am struggling to decide on 22LR or 22 MAG. Mainly using for small pest control on my mates Cattle Station, rabbits, foxes etc I’m not too concerned about the ammo cost just your thoughts about whether the additional punch of the 22 MAG makes that much of a difference or just stick to the 22LR and step up to 223 as required.
Correct shot placement with high velocity 22lr hunting ammo will do the job but the 22mag has more punch and greater reach...

Hey Oz and everyone else, I’m getting back into shooting after 20 odd years off and the .22 will be keeper, coming from having a brno model 2 as a young bloke. Worth it or should I spend a bit more. The 22 is a bit nostalgic for me but not keen on paying 3k and yep, walnut and blued. Thoughts compared to a Brno?

Have been playing with mine for the last 2 days, it shoots very nicely with some ammo better than other. It has produced some great groups already, try the Eley ammo or RWS , noticed with the bolt open you can move it into a safe position by cycling the bolt down therefore leaving the chamber open for inspection and the bolt locked in a safe positiion

The Leupold rings that you use are they the low mounts or medium? I ask as i've just received my 101 and VX3i 3.5-10x40 and wondering which ones to buy.

Does the barrel free float? Is the stock hollow or solid?
Next time you test ammo...clean your bore between batches. Rimfire is very picky about bearing surface of the bore. The waxes, copper jackets, etc. create a surface the next bullet rides on. Swapping back and forth can really hamper performance.
+DFOOSKING I was wondering that too. I find the first shot of a clean bore or the change of type of ammo sends the first one off. it shows in this vid I recon. I however was taking note more of the 2nd-5th round shot grouping

Glad you enjoyed the review… I don't think that you can buy it direct from Lithgow, the best way to do it would be to order it through your local gun shop… just explain to them that you are waiting for your licence but would like to pay for the firearm now so it's in stock and ready to go once you get your licence and permit to acquire (PTA)… That way you're not waiting for the rifle to come in stock, it's there ready to go!

17 gets way too expensive when you go out for a 200+ round target shooting session
17 also gets thrown around by the wind easier and some ranges that are mainly rimfire dont like 17
17 is more accurate for hunting and hits harder but yeah if its rare that youre going hunting then go 22 and try heaps of different types of ammo including expensive types (lapua center x etc.) coz if the pricey stuff shoots hole in hole at the range and reliable then use that for hunting :) but yeah SK MAgazine is meant to be really good for these and cheap for target stuff

Really want to get one of these, but struggling greatly with caliber decision, so coming here for advice..
I'm just going to be plinking, shooting rabbits, and the occasional fox, so been leaning towards the .22LR for the ammo cheapness.. But then also been considering the .17HMR, just because it seems to kill off rabbits with a bit more destruction (making them a guaranteed more humane kill) I am not hunting them for meat, so not concerned about that.
I am worried about the .17HMR's noise.. As us Aussies can't have silencers/suppressors.. Does the .17HMR's sound scare off the rabbits too easily? Should I just stick with getting the .22LR or will the .17HMR be okay?
did you make a decision yet? .22lr for sure mate. it'll kill any rabbit or fox out to 100m easy. subtonics are cheap and as loud as a cap gun and under $10 for 50. my 17hmr is much louder! and ammo is around $25 for 50 and it is affected by wind easier. its a no brainer. although if hunting is your thing id just go a .223 its cheap and that way you can take out most critters you'll encounter at most distances. goats pigs small deer large dogs roos

You can run it 30grain v-max and kill foxes out to 150m
Or subsonics to keep the sound down

I like this rifle and thought seriously about buying one a while ago when they were on order but the one thing i really don't like about it is there is no iron sights... sorry to be a bit old school but that's what i prefer, wish they would also make a .222 because i really don't like the .223
Yep you remind me of my Dad's generation… but nothing wrong with that, however so many of the scopes nowadays are rugged and can take the knocks, so no real need for the backup iron sights, likewise with the .222 vs .223, the .223 just has so much more variety of factory ammo, it really has superseded the .222… but if you really love the .222, nothing wrong with going with your heart, that's the joy of shooting isn't it?
ozzie have you got to shoot this rifle recently since doing the video i just got mine 2 weeks ago and have found it liked the cci standard can punch the centre out of the target at 50 metres but 100 metres it just sprays like crazy im gonna give the winchester power points a go soon

The local range was (and still is) in yards like most of the ranges in Australia plus it's a lot easier to work in yards so you can look at the MOA drop on the back of the ammo packet which is measured in yards/inches

Unless you're willing to spend $2500 on a 1710, I'd spend the $900 and buy the Lithgow. For the price its extremely hard to beat...

I picked up my crossover two weeks ago. Up to three foxes from 5 shots so far. Owned a Model 2 in the past, and I like this thing better. Perhaps its just the modern styling, and the fact it doesn't have redundant iron sights on it that makes it feel nicer. Also shot a few old Lithgow 22 'farm rifles' in my time and it is kinda nice to see the company make a good gun that shoots straight. However having shot a compound bow for a couple of years now, with an adjustable release of high quality, I am a bit disappointed with the trigger on the gun. Maybe mine was put together on a Friday arvo, but it seems to me to to have a lot of creep (which to me means how far the rigger moves before it releases), and there are rough spots (where the resistance to my finger goes up) as it goes along to the final bang-point? Having gotten used to a bow release where I don't have to really nag the thing into letting go, and wonder when it will happen, my LA101 is off to the gunsmiths next week to get a lighter spring put in (it is way to heavy), and have the sear polished so the release is at least consistant. So, I very like the gun, but to be honest I think for $995, wanting to spend another $50 straight away to get the trigger nice is a bit of a bugger.
I haven't needed to do that with my LA101, but hey I just paid $999 for a Ruger 77/22mag and it's trigger is terribly heavy, so I am planning to fix that up, so really for the price and what you get, I think the LA101 is a great rifle… Out of curiosity, have you contacted Lithgow about your trigger concerns? I always like to give a company a chance to fix something I'm not happy with...

However before I bought the rifle I did some looking on the net and asked other Crossover owners their opinions, and it wasn't hard to find comments on the trigger, and I know of three that have had theirs worked on or done it themselves. So I am betting Lithgow is aware of some talk out there, and hopefully a better trigger will be part of the .223 when it comes out, and the .308. A matching set would look great in the safe hey? :)
Interestingly the three gunsmiths I have talked to about getting a job done on it, (change two springs and hone the sear) tell me they know of plenty of $1k and over .22's that need work on the trigger. So maybe it is just one of those odd industry things ..... kinda like 'best trigger practice' is a bit lower for just a rimfire?
But don't get me wrong. Otherwise very happy with the gun. The action sounds like a door on an alien spaceship when it closes which is sweet, and I expect with some work on the trigger it will be a good enough bench rest gun at my local SSAA, so that i won't look to silly going up against the serious guys with their ANSCHÜTZ !
I am trying a Vortex Crossfire V-brite scope on it. Never used a lighted reticule before, but so far it is just awesome in low light and under spotlight. The scope was cheap enough too.
Good to hear you like the rifle… I am really looking forward to seeing their 223, 308 etc when they come out, you're right, they would look nice in the safe, might compete with my Anschutz collection ;)

I am looking to purchase a new 22lr in the near future, and I have been tossing up between the Lithgow or the ruger American 22lr. I would love to buy Australian but to me the ruger American looks high quality as well but at nearly half the price.... What are your thoughts ozzie? Is the Lithgow worth the extra hard earned ?
lync1505 Mate, I own both, so I can give you a no BS viewpoint on it… I have the standard length Ruger American in 22lr, I love it (but won't give too much away cos it's set to be reviewed in the coming weeks!), it has a lot of features for the price, however it's a little picky with ammo like most rimfires are but a great rifle for the price. The Lithgow would have the edge in accuracy from my use with them both in the field but the it's heavier, so it depends on what you want the rifle for… if you mostly head to the range or plink away on the farm, the Lithgow would be hard to beat or if you want something that it lightweight, takes the 10/22 mags and is just a fun gun, then the American would be hard to beat… it really depends on your purpose, what do you want the rifle for? I honestly love both rifles, to me the Lithgow is an icon that represents Australian-made, I've met some of the workers at the Lithgow factory and it gave me a massive sense of pride to buy Australian-made, not to mention a product that seriously kicks ass! On the other hand everyone knows how much I love Ruger (not all Rugers but most) and I enjoy using that brand in general… so honestly, get both, I did and haven't regretted it one bit!

Thanks, I appreciate that… I look at it this way, it's always good to have a back-up 22 rifle as it will always come in handy whether it be introducing a new shooter or simply just enjoying the hobby of shooting, it will never go astray - so yep get both, you'll be happy you did :)

Yeah they are calling the centre fires the LA102, so that is the correct model number...

most likely it will be targeting most of time, not exactly sure I want to shoot around and kill animals at this stage yet. :-)
Sure, the reason I ask is it will determine what recommendation I make based on your actual use... the LA101 is a great range rifle, it shoots very well and is heavy enough to hold it's own in terms of small groups. Based on how the .22LR version feels, what do you reckon one of these in .223 would be for a first rifle?
I think it'd be a fine choice personally… it feels good, it shoots well and it's well priced, so I'd be keen to see how it shoots in 223 but I can't see there being any accuracy issues going off the 22 version…!

Did you purchase the rifle used for testing? How is true trigger? Does it have any creep?
No mate, I bought it brand new, unfired still had the 'Australian-Made' tag on the trigger and bolt was sealed new etc… As I said, I can only go off the specs from the factory and my trigger was lighter which was awesome! It has a little take-up and a real crisp break… I really love it!

Most of my rifles I have had to replace the triggers (except for the Anschutz) but the LA101 I'm happy with, if you're not, buy their 1kg spring when it's available...
I got my LA101 a while ago and I am a big guy and the stock is just to small for me. I am also setting this rifle for the .22LR Marksmanship Challenge. Do you know of anyone making a light weight tactical stock for this rifle. I know it uses a CZ design magazine, do you know what modifications would have to be made to put in one of the aftermarket CZ stocks or if it is even remotely close to fitting?
No I don't, how big are you? I'm 6"5 and this rifle fits me fine with the spacers...
ozziereviews I'm 6'4". My problem is with the grip, I take a hold of the grip and put my finger on the trigger and it goes almost clear to the second nukel.
