Lithgow Arms LA102 v Tikka T3 Lite

  • For my first ever review I wanted to compare these two quality rifles: the Lithgow Arms LA102 and the Tikka T3 Lite both in .223.
    I know a lot of people had the same question I did when it came time to buying one or the other, "Lithgow or Tikka?" So I wanted to try and help anyone else with that same question come to a decision.
    I know a lot of people also wonder why these two rifles in particular are compared to each other so often (mainly us Aussies) and I believe when you break each aspect of the rifles down they are very similar in many ways.
    You have to remember too. Tikka is Sako and becoming apart of the Beretta family gives them endless sources to perfect their rifles. Lithgow on the other hand are only just now breaking back into the civilian firearms market, their specialty is the F90 "Bullpup" so there is bound to be teething issues while they build up their bolt action rifles.
    This review is a bit lengthy but I wanted to make sure I covered every little detail between these two rifles so you could get a clear picture of their similarities and their differences.
    Hope you all enjoy this review and remember to hit that thumbs up and subscribe to my channel!
    Thanks for watching Good Cam Hunting

    There's one more important difference, the lithgow has a big ol Australian made on the side of the receiver 👍👍👍

    ...I bought a Lithgow LA02 laminate in .223, fitted a Vortex Diamondback 6-24x50 FFP and shot it @300 and 500 yards with Geco 63grn FMJ and it was consistently hitting V-Bulls on McQueens targets with a few sighting shots....very impressed.

    One of the best reviews I’ve seen very fair and unbiased. Good point about the Lithgow preferring the heavier bullet due to twist rate. I’ve just put money down for a Lithgow in 308 as I didn’t want the long wait for one in 6.5. Maybe you could do a comparison when it becomes available. Also the bloke at the gun shop Cleaver arms here in Brisbane said that in his opinion the Lithgow was as good as a Sako at about half the price.

    Loved the review, very fair and no bs. And shows that between the two, it will come down to personal preference, and as a tikka owner, I will admit, there are some things I wish tikka did that the Lithgow does, but both, with the right ammo for the rifle will give excellent results. I'd still go tikka, simply because where I am, there are many chassis options available for the action, and Lithgow don't appear to have that added bonus.... just yet, but from what I've seen, it won't be long before companies start providing that as an option, if they haven't already

    Thanks for sharing your video. Good job on your presentation and comparison of the Lithgow LA102 and the Tikka T3 Lite. In a 223, a light rifle is fine, but when one steps up to a larger caliber - say above 308 the recoil is noticeable. At one time I owned a T3 Varmint in 223 with a heavy barrel. It was a great gun but it has since moved on to a new home. I noticed that Lithgow is manufacturing a LH 22LR and it would be nice if they expanded their offerings of LH rifles in larger calibers. I've handled a RH Lithgow in 308 and really liked how it shoulder, and how it felt.

    Maaaaaate, well done, well explained. Couldn't have put it better. Every individual rifle, regardless of "breed" like different "food". As a left-hander, for field shooting, I can't go passed the Tikka (I have the 22-250 lite), but for the range, for me I'd love a Lithgow. I'm a big bloke and the LA102 feels fantastic, and a pleasure to shoot, comes to position beautifully. Yes, as soon as I can afford it, I'll be buying a LA102 in 223.
    I was brought up using a Brno Mod 1, what a beautiful little rifle, but sadly it was stolen. I replaced it with the LA101 lefty and holy smoke, what a little beauty. Very, very accurate. Lithgow do a fantastic job with their creations and I hope your viewers support them, they are truly worth it. I toured their factory and shot on their range back in the 70s, what a hoot that was. (I'm over 60 and been shooting 50 years).

    Great review! I'd be nice if they started importing those Lithgows to Canada. Looks like a great rifle! I'd definitely check one out. But them Tikkas are just great rifles. I've owned a couple, and my latest is in 270wsm. First 3 rounds out of it with the cheapest ammo I could find, Federal Fusion. Was a cloverleaf at 100 yards. Blown away. Same thing with my other ones. They just shoot so damn great. Actually my Tikka out shoots my brothers Sako. But, in all honesty, my brother couldn't hit a cow at 40 paces.lol. So who knows. Only thing I didn't like with the original T3s is that hockey puck for a butt rest. But easily changed out. After 20 rounds with the 270wsm, my shoulder was nice and sore. But got the limbsaver on it now, and it's a dream to shoot. Plus having to upgrade the recoil lug. But glad the rectified all that in the T3x. Great review! You got a Canuck subscriber now! Hard to find good honest, detailed reviews nowadays. To many ppl pushing products. Hopefully us Canadians can get a hold of them Lithgows some time. They look like great rifles, and well built. Oh, and as for Remington ammo. I don't even try that crap in any of my rifles. Never got them to group in any rifle I've owned. Same with most ppl I know. Remington has gone to crap since they where bought out by that Freedom arms group. It's hit and miss with there rifles too. GC has hit the shitter down there from what I've heard. Have a good one.

      Kman31ca thanks mate! Can honestly say I've got a grin from ear to ear reading this 😁 there are a few things I'm going to restructure with my next review but I'm all about giving my honest opinion, not here to sell something I don't like. They really are a great rifle! I know people have had some issues as they came off the production line but Lithgow Arms have been great with their customer service from what I've heard and have used initial feedback to improve their rifles. I feel for your bro haha 😂 I'd be lying if I said I haven't missed my mark at less than 40 paces but we all have our days, just gotta keep at it and as they say practice makes perfect! Glad to see I'm hitting an international audience too! Thanks for your comment mate! Greatly appreciated! 👍

    Ive owned la 101 & 102 .243, T1x, T3X varmint .308 and CTR 6.5
    I loved my Lithgows but the Tikkas in my opinion are better.
    Also I disagree with you on actions. Tikka wins that race brother.
    Both Lithgows were brand new as well as my tikkas but they were not smoother than the tikkas.
    Also like to add, there’s not much as in aftermarket stuff you can do with the Lithgows. Where tikkas there’s tonnes. Tikka trigger wins too 😊
    I’m not Lithgow bashing by any means, they are friggen awesome rifles and wish I could have kept them.. but had a few issues with both that had to go back to the factory, where my tikkas have and still run perfectly to this day.

    I have a standard T3 in 7mm08 but definitely feels a bit heavier. I think I got a weight of 3.9kg with a Burris Full field IV 2.5-10x42 scope, a Backlanz Bipod and a Manitas Alpine Lite Suppressor. It's not too bad but definitely not the lightest for a bush rifle. Other thing too is the half cocks on the Tikkas are terrible but can be fixed by a Gunsmith. I've heard tales of people loosing bullets in the bush because of it.
    Other then that, I love mine, it shoots coin size groups and just a pleasure to shoot with 140gr projectiles.

    • @GoodCamHunting
      @GoodCamHunting  Před 4 lety +1

      GreenMachine1975 Good question mate. Personally I know I'm not the best free hand shooter so I will always try to find a good spot to either lay prone, rested on a tree or post and if none present themselves or I'm placed in a circumstance where I have to make a quick shot I will take a knee. I practice dry firing with my rifle while free standing and I believe I can keep my reticle on target so to answer your question the rifle isn't "that heavy" that it can't be done but when I'm out hunting I will always go for the most stable position I can be in to make my shot.
      Hopes this helps mate! 🍻 cheers!

    • @GoodCamHunting

      Also to extend on this, a lot of the videos you see they'll be shooting for groups or some long range target/gong shooting so you're always gonna want to be as stable as possible. Unless they're trying to see how accurate they can be shooting free hand you'll find most guys will be shooting in prone or at a bench.

    Just a shame you didn't run some heavier rounds it would demonstrate the versatility of these 2 rifles when heavy or light rounds are required. Why didn't you try the Ozzie ammo I believe it is a top shelf performer?

    what's the price difference between the 2? Try shooting 35-40gr in the 1-12 twist, group should shrink, a friend I shoot with has a very nice Sako with a 1-12 twist and with 55gr Sierra Match Kings, shot in the 1 1/8- 1 1/4" groups. We loaded 40 varmint bullets and groups dropped to literally 1 hole@100 yrds. Nice video- keep up the good work

      DrMike040298 cheers mate! Thanks for that bit of info! Not sure where you are but here (Australia) for the Tikka T3 Lite you're looking at AU$1,150 average and for the Lithgow Arms LA102 in a polymer stock average prices is AU$1,300. I had another guy from the US comment previously saying you'll pay half the price of a LA102 for a Tikka over there. Thanks again mate! Cheers 👍

      Good Cam Hunting Thanks for the reply, now it makes sense why you're comparing these two- here in the US the Tikka goes for $500-600, it's amazing the cost difference!!! If you get the chance try a varmit load in the 35-40 gr range for a 1-12 twist, you may be pleasently surprised.

    • @GoodCamHunting
      @GoodCamHunting  Před 3 lety

      It's my favourite rifle mate! I've got a Tikka T3x in .308 but I prefer my LA102. I've got so much confidence in it that when I put my cross hair on my target, be it a fox or a piece of paper, I know I'm gonna hit my mark. Few things I would like to invest in for it are a set of 30mm rings so I can switch out the Nikko Stirling scope for my Burris Veracity, and I would like to drop it (or another LA102) in to a chassis for the extra rounds I'd get from an AICS mag, then there's all the other modular components but that's just personal preference.
      But to answer your question, it still shoots well and I love it 👍 I will probably look to get another maybe in 6.5cm in the future.

      Do the lucky 13 mags work well for the extra capacity? Or are they a bit pricey compared to the aics mags?

    • @GoodCamHunting
      @GoodCamHunting  Před 3 lety +1

      @@holden3083 I have never personally used a lucky 13 mag to be able to give any honest feedback on them. I heard negative reviews of the gen 1 models regarding something to do with the spring they were using which caused feed issues but has probably been resolved in the current model of mag.
      From the bit of research I've done the cheapest lucky 13 10rnd mag I could find was AU$139.00 compared to say a MDT 10rnd polymer AICS mag being roughly AU$45.00 (and I put emphasis on the roughly) or even their steel mags at roughly AU$85.00.
      BUT you also have to consider the costs involved to make the 2 comparable of cause; you've got to have a stock/chassis that will take the AICS pattern mags. So if you're happy with the LA102 in its original timber/laminate/synthetic stock and all you want is the extra rounds then you probably couldn't go wrong with the lucky 13 mag 👍

    I have had a Tikka stainless laminate .223 1/12"for a few years and it's never missed a beat. Relatively light and looks great and with no load development (one grain under ADI max is where I started) it will shoot sub MOA 5 shots groups with a couple of different pills. My concerns with the Crossover is that there is no real stainless option. Yes I know it's Cerakoted but coatings scratch and wear. Scratch stainless and there's more of the same underneath. The Lithgow's pic rail gets in the way of proper low scope mounting at the front where the objective bell is. The Lithgow recall is a major concern.

    a 1in 12 twist rate barrel on your Tikka - that's the varmint barrel and won't do so well with heavier, predator type loads (fox, coyote) - you should have stated that the 1 in 8 twist rate barrel is the better option.....
