  • Howard, born Leslie Howard Steiner on April 3, 1893, in London, England, was a distinguished actor renowned for his captivating performances both on stage and in film. Tragically, his life was cut short on June 1, 1943, when the plane he was traveling on was shot down by German forces during World War II.
Howard's presence in both theater and cinema was marked by his suave demeanor and impeccable versatility. He effortlessly transitioned between roles, leaving an indelible mark on each character he portrayed. One of his most iconic performances was as Sir Percy Blakeney in "The Scarlet Pimpernel" (1934), opposite Merle Oberon. Howard's portrayal of the enigmatic hero combined wit, charm, and a sense of nobility, earning him widespread acclaim.
In addition to his role in "The Scarlet Pimpernel," Howard's career reached new heights with his portrayal of Ashley Wilkes in the timeless classic "Gone with the Wind" (1939). His portrayal of the refined Southern gentleman added depth to the epic saga and solidified his status as one of Hollywood's leading actors.
Merle Oberon, Howard's co-star in "The Scarlet Pimpernel," brought a mesmerizing presence to the screen as the leading lady. Her chemistry with Howard added layers to their on-screen dynamic, enhancing the romantic tension and intrigue central to the film's plot.
Leslie Howard and Merle Oberon legacy, endures through their timeless performances, showcasing their unparalleled talent and leaving an enduring impact on the world of cinema.

Leslie Howard was killed June 1, 1943 when KLM/BOAC Flight 777 Lisbon - Whitchurch was shot down by the Luftwaffe off the the north coast of Spain. The German fighter pilots were upset that they were not informed that there was airline traffic in the area. If they had been aware, they indicated they could have escorted the aircraft to Bourdeaux as a captured aircraft. They took photos of the wreckage and after the war Leslie Howard's family was provided with copies.
