Any Anthony Mann noir is gonna be excellent. And John Alton the cinematographer. THIS FILM CANT MISS!! A top flight director of westerns too.
Alton was brilliant. His work on Raw Deal and T-Men, painting with Light, to coin a phrase.
Saw this movie on TV when young and I loved it. Also terrified me! Robert Cummings is wonderful and it's a great story.

A very enjoyable trip to the world of freshy sliced loaves; Fouché is particularly good as a wily opportunist with his own special kind of sense of humour.

And then the corrupt members of the convention have found out that their names are on the list. they have beheaded Robespierre, to build a parliamentery system called democracy. Since then they are leading France.
An excellent film, considering its age - it's even older than me!🤣😂 Amazing what they could do without CGI, just good acting and direction.

This is a very good film about a bloody and exciting era of history. As far as i can tell, they read the history books before they wrote the screenplay. Fouche was a real character--a spider and a watcher behind the scenes. He survived into Napoleon's reign, and even Napoleon was afraid of him See: IN THE DAYS OF THE FRENCH REVOLUTION.
...so Fouche was a combination of J Edgar Hoover and Beria?
An excellent film with the director and cinematographer working wonders with a low budget. One wonders if the parallels between Robspierre and Stalin were intentional.
It was true to life when Robespierre is silenced at the end. When he was to speak at the convention his enemies feared his words so much they busted his jaw.
Ron Howard pops the clutch, signals, checks both ways, and proceeds gently into traffic, politely inviting people to eat his dust."😅

Je me rends compte qu'a l'époque de Robespierre, on devrait peser chaque mot qu'on prononce et, plus important encore, à qui l'on dit, sinon c'est la guillotine. Quelle angoisse pour ces contemporains! Vivement qu'on est loin de tout ça, après tant d'années déjà. Il faut que cela n'arrive plus jamais, peu importe quelle époque dans le futur.

If I could wear a suit like Max, hell, I would be a dictator too! I am being shallow but their wardrobes are tough.
Be a dictator in your own life. People throw that word around as of its not FRIGHTENING TERRIFYING , more than any thriller I've seen

Curiosa y estupenda película
The subtitles are laughably inaccurate! Otherwise, very good for its kind, a sort of Film Noir meets Red Scare with more than usually subtle acting, writing and direction.
