Met James Garner, in 1978 he was a Sweetheart. Talk to me as if he knew me for years. I told him I fell in love with him when he was doing Maverick in the early 60's. I was just a teenager. He looked at me and said jokingly I guess I'm too old for you now! Great guy.
Whenever I watch these films from the 1960s, with all my favourite actors, I feel as though I was living in a different world back in the 1970s when I saw them. What a wonderful time that was and how come we allowed this world to become so horrible and insane? I feel so sorry for the youngsters of today who will ever feel such happiness of these times. Whilst we watched these films and heard Strangers in the Night, they have their RAP rubbish and violent, noisy, woke films! 😖. We were truly blessed to have experienced the last great films from the 1960s/70s and 1980s.

Gerald McRaney told a story of playing a small part on an early season of The Rockford files. Jim welcomed him warmly to the set. Later, McRaney’s parents happened to be visiting him at the studio, and he went to ask Garner, at his trailer, if he would meet them. A studio exec Garner was in a meeting with said, impatiently, “We don’t have time.” Garner said, “Well, we’ll have to make time then!” Just one example of why actors, not execs, are the key to success of films.
I have become transfixed by your collection and diversity of films.Every night I find a new enjoyment to watch.Thank you so much Chris for your gift.😃👍👍
I am a die-hard fan of the wonderfully competent James Garner and will watch anything that features him. I have most of his movies and TV shows on DVD including this movie. Wish the quality of this video was more bright. Its also a pleasure to see the bubbly Sandra Dee in all and everything. Anthony Fransciosa too was a tremendous actor and so was the European actress, Melinda M [the spelling makes me dizzy]. Yes, Strangers in the night was a huge pull and plug for the movie.
Mediocre, but Garner's on record as not having liked it much himself and poor Sandra Dee absolutely hated it. Apparently a troubled production with a mid-filming director change. Garner and Franciosa got along so badly their fight scene included some real punches, supposedly because Garner was fed up with Franciosa "abusing the stunt men" and refusing to pull his punches on set. Given Franciosa's record for having a anger management issues (including jail time for assaulting a photographer) it's pretty believable.
Light hearted fun. One of the things I enjoyed most was Melina's wardrobe - especially the coral polka dotted dress. Oh for a dress like that today and the figure to wear it!

@Cat Magic I think the melody originated here but was soon after released with lyrics and became a hit by Frank Sinatra. Sinatra's scat "scooby dooby doo" at the end also became famous. I read somewhere that Sinatra hated the song, even though it was a hit for him. Personally, I like it.
Scooby-Dooby Doo was then picked up by Hanna Barberra who launched a popular cartoon show about a dog and some teenager crimefighters, or so I've read.
Actually, at first, I only continued to watch this movie for as long as I did was because of having heard near the beginning of the movie the beautiful ‘Strangers in the Night’ score. And even though I found Sandra Dee’s acting and part enjoyable to watch - it wasn’t enough to make want to watch this movie to the end. But just as I was about to delete it out from my movie watch list, Melina Mercouri became a major character in the movie. Although I’ve never really seen her in anything before - she caught my attention in a big way - especially from the moment she said - “I have something special for you.” So Melina Mercouri’s part, acting, good looks, and that accent - plus Sandra Dee’s sweetness and good looks, and that beautiful score ‘Strangers in the Night’ - is what made this movie enjoyable for me to watch.
Has anyone ever noticed what gem James Garner was to entertainment ✨🤔❓ Didn’t really matter what role he played - he just had that Everyman persona that made you want to see what is gonna happen next 🙄💭 .He often times seemed The not so sure MARK 😐 you just knew tide his shoe laces together in the morning and yet still managed to get it together enough to appear he was so intelligent he didn’t notice because he was thinking 🤔 about more important things. He somehow always got to the finish line in a comical manner and filled in the blanks enough to make it relatable . Great actor 🙏
Nobody could do sarcasm like him. The classic is in "My Fellow Americans" when the other ex-president tells Garner's character, "People will believe us, we're Presidents!" And Garner just gives him that look... Hilarious!
Nice little spy rom com romp. Not serious at all, not meant to be, just entertaining to watch. Garner, Rock Hudson, Sandra Dee, Tony Franciosa and other stars did lots of these in the 50's and 60's. Around 1970 "message" movies became the fashion in Hollywood (they still are) and this type of film became more and more infrequent. Today they are rarely, if ever, made or made well. Served Franciosa as a student waiter at the dining area in the UCLA arts complex about 20 years after this film. He was still pretty handsome and talking to some executive about a project. OK guy, lousy tipper. Thanks for posting this. Thumbs up!
Not sure I would describe this as hilarious but if you like James Garner as Rockford then you will probably not mind this movie. I had never seen it before but I read that Bert Kaempfert had done the music and that it was the source of Strangers in the Night. I loved the score and found myself mildly amused by the plot which revolves around a search for some missing smuggled diamonds. Thank you for posting this. I really think all these old movies should be scrubbed up and re released.
I recognize the song 🎶 Catch a Falling Star 💫 and Put it in Your Pocket by Perry Como. 💫💫💫I loved 🥰 that song 🎶 and many others that the laidback Perry Como sang.
For those who know the places where the film was shot, namely in Serra da Arrábida, there is a big difference between 1966 and today. The village of Sesimbra is a beach resort full of concrete and Portinho da Arrábida has houses and restaurants over the water. There is a discontinuity in the film in the locations of the action... the chase that starts in Sesimbra, suddenly passes to Portinho, a few kilometers away... The Portuguese accent of some actors seems more Mexican...
