  • Panasonic Lumix G7 vs Canon Rebel EOS T7i hands on comparison of the two cameras. I show the differences and similarities through actual tests and demos vs just talking about them. The reason I made this video 2 years after the G7 was released is because the G7 remains a great camera with unique features at that price point.
    THE CANONS HAVE 24.2MP SENSORS VS 16MP SENSORS ON THE PANASONIC. I MAY HAVE FORGOT TO MENTION THIS!
    This is the Camera and the gear I use to film this video:

    G7 also has the advantage of 4K and wireless operation built in with the free Panasonic "Image App." Straight out of the box G7 can be controlled remotely with any smart phone or tablet and can transfer files wirelessly without removing the SD card. The Canon can do some of these things, ( except shooting 4K ), with an additional device, the Alpine Labs "Pulse". It is also Eye-Fi compatible. "PictBridge" is an advantage the Canon has over the Panasonic. The optional battery grip on the ( T6i ) with THAT camera makes it possible to use either the Li-Ion rechargeable batteries or "AA" batteries. DSLR's have a significant advantage on battery life over mirrorless, .....like 3 to 4 times longer. And lastly, the Canon can be interfaced with a much greater variety of things like photo booth software and third party devices. But if your primary goal is video, Panasonic absolutely SPANKS everyone else on that, .... even some full frame cameras that cost thousands more.

      +PAUL JORDON No chance that I'm switching! I'm all Canon, it's what I started with, and I'm loyal to a fault with brands for some reason. As for the EVF, it looks amazing and yes it does have all the exposure settings. However it is not perfect, it lags at times, stutters at times, and I found myself preferring the actual real view the longer I used it. I'd rate the G7 about a 7 and the T7i a 9. But I'm trying to grow my channel and learn as much as possible, so I figured I could kill 2 birds with one stone by borrowing this camera again.

      It really depends. Sony has better autofocus for vlogging, but Panasonic is a smaller form factor, the lenses aren’t quite as expensive and no overheating issues that many Sony cameras have. Both have 4K and shoot very good quality video. Panasonic also has the flip-out screen which is pretty much essential for vlogging as you can frame yourself and see if you’re in focus. There’s a trade off with each

  • @johnbhome2

    I took the cheaper option and bought the SL2. There are other differences between the T7i and the SL2 with the 9 versus 45 AF points being significant but you can always hit the live view button with the DPAF. I must admit I was kind of impressed with the Panny G7. This is the first comparison I have seen that shows the difference between mirrored and non mirrored. I especially liked the silence when shooting. Thanks for a great video showing the difference between mirrored and non mirrored.

    • @FitsandFun
      @FitsandFun  Před 6 lety +2

      +John Blomeling The Panasonic just didn't feel right in my hands, the grip was to small, and I constantly hit the focus ring when I was trying to zoom. I'm not sure if I just got overly familiar with tje Canon, but I definitely like shooting with the Canon way more. Not even close. With that said, considering the G7 is 2 years old, it still is a great camera at a great price. Crazy it's 2 years old and still one of the only 4k with flip screen in the price range.

    • @TheJulioGulio
      @TheJulioGulio Před rokem +1

      @@FitsandFun You should never be shooting in Manual Focus, Hence why the focus grip ring is disengaged when it's in AutoFocus. Most professional photographers never use MF unless they are shooting landscapes. The quality of images on the G7 come out 1000× better then the T7 when properly used... T7 technology is old in comparison to the G7 even though it 2 years older. Canon just kept pushing the same tech back then but they wised up.

      Mirrorless are smaller and they show the image in the viewfinder exactly how the picture would look. Also they can usually take photos completely silently. I was using my new G7 yesterday for the first time, Couldn't get to adjust shutter speed or aperture while shooting ! Tried fiddling around and in one particular mode i could adjust the shutter speed and aperture but it was having no effect on the video. Whatttttt !!!! So perplexed. Im having to use it like an auto point and shoot. Coming from years of canon DSLR usage, you always had full control during pre-shot and during the recording also. Also the shutter speed didn't want to go beyond 1/250.
    All this in video as im only interested in video. To top it all off this camera shoots video in all mode dial positions too and in what seem to be photo modes too. This means each of these modes offers different kind of control over the video ?

      +Antoine Yetts I'm pretty sure it's just like a cell phone, you just turn the shutter sound on or off. Because without the mirror that needs to spring up and out of the way on a DSLR, I don't think there is an actual shutter sound naturally, I believe it's a completely added sound just for effect. I think.

    Be careful here. I had a G7. Focusing is contrast detect only. Hunts on focus and is poor for video. Loved the camera as long I was using manual focus on event shots on a tripod. Lousy on continuous focus events as it is contrast focus only. I have the Canon SL-2 and it smokes the G7 focus engine. The T7i is using dual pixel AF too. Do you need 4K to share on CZcams? Maybe, maybe not. I don't. 1080p is fine. Lens support is superior on the Canon too with 70 Canon lenses to chose from. How many for the Panasonic? And for MFT they are pricey. 3rd party support is a Canon win too. Image quality in stills are reasonably close. In video the Canon will hold focus way better than the Panasonic will. If you can live with the contrast only focus engine, cool. Look into a speed booster for low light and fast glass.The MFT is middling in low light. The APS-c Canon and Nikon cameras have more dynamic range too. Outdoor street shooter with plenty of light will love the G7. Video at a well lit venue or outdoors, get that ND filter for the too bright sunshine, and the G7 is a mini GH5, kind of. But no means count the Canon out. It is about systems not just the camera body by itself. I loved the interface of the G7. Best yet! But allot more is going here than some cameras on a tripod and looking through the viewfinders, and looking at some menus. I agree with you they are tools for sure, but both are viable. Depends on how you understand their strengths and liabilities.

The G7 can take any lens you throw at it with the propper adaptators. I mounted my full frame vintage lens from olympus and get stunning results from that. It will mount almost any lens out there that is MFT or bigger. The connon lens support is laughable in comparison.

    Panasonic has been making cameras and lenses for Hollywood cinematography for 60+ years and now they've partnered with Leica for the lens construction so it's a double win for half the cost. The Panasonic camera and lenses are much lighter and easier to carry around for hours at a time. Try shooting an 8 hr wedding/reception with the Canon and you'll be crying for body muscle aches for days afterward. Don't be afraid of the Micro 4:3 sensor as the Panasonic advanced technology matches that of a full frame sensor.

    The more research I do to try and find the perfect camera for me and my wife, the more confusing it gets, and the more I'm likely to just give up. I do appreciate videos like yours, but I have a really difficult time making decisions, and on top of that I'm OCD as hell! I almost just wish someone would take my money from me and purchase whatever camera they believe to be the correct one. I take a lot of portraits of my daughter, so portrait capability and bocah are extremely important to us, and video capturing capabilities are definitely important as well. My wife and I have gotten away with using our cell phones, (pixel and iPhone) to capture our families videos and photos up until now, but we want the capability of printing larger photos. As it is, we can't print photos taken with our cell phones, above about a 6"x7" for example.

    Olympus saw the future of current mirrorless trend a decade ago.
    I think the full frame fever is a temporary trend and eventually will settle with smaller sensors.
    Current full frame market share is only 10% for professional and they are jumping ships.
    Current full frame fever is supported by the consumers who don't have experienced with full frame before.
    They'll find out advantages and disadvantages of full frame eventually, like pros did before.
    Unless you make large prints regularly and shoot under low light all the time, the cost(and having no return for the investment) and the bulk of carrying will eventually get to you.

      +Richy Rich I like the Canon better for video and photo. Canon has a much better auto focus. Actually I thoroughly enjoyed using the Canon more in every aspect. Just a totally different feel and experience in my opinion. And the battery life was really lousy on the Panasonic, at least the one I use.

    • @FitsandFun
      @FitsandFun  Před 6 lety

      +Richy Rich I think every company has a solid option for under 1k. Sony, Panasonic, Canon, maybe not Nikkon for video. Canon's SL2 has almost identical video options and quality as the Canon T7i and is a few hundred cheaper. Honestly, I've spent 3x more on my lenses, the lens ultimately determines the picture quality. And Canon seems to have by far the most options out there.

    Cannon is way better for video plus when shooting video it becomes mirrorless that's a big difference!! Also it does a great job for photos and with a
    dual sensor that's a major plus.

    • @jacobmcvay123
      @jacobmcvay123 Před 8 měsíci

      That is exactly the opposite. Cannon is a DLSR. The Panasonic is mirrorless.

  • @Ryan_Powers25
    @Ryan_Powers25 Před 2 lety

    I currently own the G7 and I'm about to sell it. I think that 4k is overrated. A 4 minute long 4k video creates a 1.4GB file! That is insane! Yes, there's so much detail but honestly who's gonna be recording homemade movies in 4k. I do agree that the camera is more than just the sum of its parts. It's a classic. At least as an amateur, I use my smart phone camera more and take good enough photos with it. I might end up getting Sony a6400 or 6600 at some point. I think the bigger sensor does make a difference. Then again, if you go that route, then why not step up to full frame. The problem with any electronic devices is that in a few years they become outdated.

      EVF makes it possible to track motion through eyepiece, like sports, or ENG, while shooting video. However, a larger screen, even an external monitor, really is better for shooting pre-planned versus on the fly footage. You can only stare through that tiny eyepiece for so long.

    • @FitsandFun
      @FitsandFun  Před 6 lety

      The EVF gives a preview of the photo/video. So if you shoot manually or are using a large aperture lens, it lets you see exactly what the photo/video exposure is. For auto shooters it really isn't very helpful. So there is actual value to it, but I still prefer a standard view finder. Just my personal preference.

    Again I find a great video of yours. Remember my question about de clean HDMI output on the T7i? well, the G7 is the Lumix option I said was better for what I wanted; it will output a clean image in video mode while the Canon will maintain all the control symbols. Kinda sad because I like the specs and ease of use better on the T7i, but that one detail completely ruins it for me. Canon needs to step up their game, live setups are increasing and Panasonic is leading the way.
