      4k is only 8 megapixels every sensor today is capable of producing it technically. We know all don't plus most don't use the full sensor. You spend more on features and build quality than image or video quality

      @wikrap1 Před 7 lety +4

      Actually a stream of data and processing it on the fly is a big deal. That's why you need totally different hardware for 4K video. It's not only a matter of pixel count on sensor. That's not a surprise. A surprise is that you have no zebra, focus peaking etc. stuff in regular software and you have it on Lantern. Why Canon is not including it as an options???

    It's more like $447 G7 vs $4399 5D Mark IV because you need a lens not just the body. With the stock 24-70mm lens the 5D is $4399.

    Great comparison! I loved that it was a blind comparison -- really great idea. I just bought the Panasonic G7 because of the great price, but having the money to buy the Mark IV has been one of my "dream" cameras. I'll be honest, in some of the shots, I couldn't really tell that much of a difference -- most looked the same to me. But in the Dynamic Range, I though the G7 had the much better resolution. Interesting side by side comparisons! I'm very happy with my Lumix G7 which I upgraded to from a Canon t3i. I had a couple of Canon EF mount lenses I wanted to use (50mm and 24-70mm) so I purchased the Metabones 0.64 Speedbooster. In addition to the Canon lenses I have a Lumix 25mm F/1.7, Lumix 14-42 f/3.5-5.6 kit lens, Olympus ED-40-150mm f4.0-5.6R telephoto (which I bought for $100.00 ) and I just bought a Rokinon 20mm f2.0 wide angle which is on sale for $299.00 at B&H Photo. I am now broke but a very happy camper with my new toys which I hope will allow me to recover some of my expense with more shooting gigs!

      Resolution doesn't matter, but DPI and viewing distance does. A phone usually has a higher score in this aspect than even a 4k monitor will at 28" and 26" viewing distance.

    • @tesladrummer
      @tesladrummer Před 7 lety +4

      Just needed to poke the second comment you made. We ended up with the same conclusion that B was a bit better overall.
      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      I was 24"-26" so good guess.
      My monitor:
      3840x2160
      33.5"x18.8"
      ~114 ppi (device surface)
      ~24" viewing distance
      iPhone 6 plus (5.5"):
      1920x1080
      4.79"x2.69"
      ~401 ppi (device surface)
      ~6.86" viewing distance for approximate equivalent pixel density. Can you focus that close?
      ~3" for field-of-vision approximate equivalence, which is irrelevant to this situation.
      But that's not even the whole story! I was viewing the footage at its native resolution without significant re-sampling (well one hopes, but never quite trusts GPU configs). The best case scenario is that the iPhone was playing 4K downres'ed to 1920. I'm not sure whether the iPhone's mp4 codecs are better at that conversion than youtube but for the sake of argument let's call it a draw. For every 4 pixels I can see (and when I lean a little closer I can make out individual pixels) you're seeing 1 that is some form of an average of my 4. If using the 1080p playback from youtube there's probably some spatial and temporal compression on top of the scaling, although not as severe as if the content was native 1080p.
      Did that matter for the more important tests? No. The resolving properties of both cameras in this test were very close and wouldn't be a factor to a sane person in choosing between them for 4K video. However, the resolution and noise tests are definitely different when downres'ed to 1080p.
      I don't think the phone's resolution was relevant in evaluating the difference between these cameras in this test. I noted in another comment that the different in lenses was far more pertinent. Most of the differences between cameras were in color representation which is going to vary more and is less predictable than resolution. Also, while I have confidence in my resolution-based opinions, my monitor isn't a well-spec'ed IPS nor is it calibrated to any standard, so I'm not claiming that mine is necessarily "better-than-yours".
For one with focal reducer properties, there are some like the R.J.     Here were my results:
    Rolling shutter: B, both severe
    ISO: A
    Shadows: B
    Background blur: Both were fine, preferred B
    DR1: Both were fine, preferred A
    DR2: B
    DR3: Both were fine, preferred A
    4K detail: Both were fine, preferred B
    4K detail, High ISO: Both were fine, preferred A
    Focusing: B
    The massive difference in lenses on the cameras in this test make some of the results less relevant. For example background blur and 4k detail could be chalked up to the difference in glass. The focus tracking didn't blow me away on either camera but there is a lot of variation in AF performance with every lens/body combo and this test is not apples to apples.
    I'm not a Canon or Panasonic shooter but am impressed with the results from bother cameras. I'd never buy a 5D to shoot video but it does a decent job. With regards to the 5D's video file size, that's a silly complaint. SD cards are cheap now and I'd rather go through more cards and throw out bits later. I'm not saying the Canon is inherently better for it and I'm not sure how annoying the workflow is but I don't knock a camera for recording at too high a bitrate.
    All-in-all I'm really considering the G7 now when I had thought about getting an a6300 or a6500. That's the comparison I'd like to see done in the same manner as this one. Great video, cheers!
I saw the term mslr used at a local target to describe a canon eos m mirrorless interchangeable lens camera and for about a year, mslr is the term I used to describe cameras like the gh4, g7, A7, etc. Heck, truth be told, I still use the term mslr when I refer to dslr style mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses.
      Yes, it is true there is no mirror reflex system in a camera like a Gh5. but I use the term mslr to refer to mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses built in the style of a dslr. I just feel like it is just a perfect term for cameras like those.
      FA REAL! I don't know why people buy Canons like that. You literally can get the exact graded image that you want in camera with most prosumer and professional Panasonic cameras...cutting out that extra step in post. And now that you can adapt EF lenses and C mount lenses to these Panasonic DSLR cameras, I just don't see any reason to pay more for a Canon.
    • @sdutango
      @sdutango Před 7 lety +4
      True, but no doubt Photography is superior on the Canon, main reason is probably the AF during photo, and editability on the post probably has better detail to work with, but if they were doing videography mainly, they'll go bankrupt in second.
      Low light, skin tones and Canon glass. Far from a rip off. All these videos focus on video. Lets see the G7 perform under low light in as a photography camera without proper lighting at ISO 5000+ and see what camera succeeds. Cameras aren't all about video as many on youtube would have you believe. So maybe for you it is a rip off but for photography it is one of the best you can get.
    A few weeks ago, I bought a used GX85 (Leica form factor) with a 14-140 (28 - 280 eq.). I definitely like the lens, but might go for the GX8 which had been my first pick. Some of the features, and the price, of the GX85 were better, but the EVF and dials are better for me on the GX8.
    It was (mostly) obvious which camera was which, especially in the auto-focus comparison. The sharpness and clarity were decidedly in favor of the 5D MkIV, but what do you expect to happen considering the wide price difference. To the G7's credit, it wasn't easy to tell which image we were looking at. I had to pause and maximize the screen to tell. As another commenter mentioned, 4K large file size on the Canon is a non-starter. It's there to check off the 4K box, but most people will not use it. G7 wins this comparison across the board except in the auto-focus department. And to be real, consistently nailing the focus is more important to me than having 4K - That's why the Caono 80D is so popular. But if you want 4K and don't mind pulling focus, the G7 is an amazing value.
    HOW IS THE PHOTO ON G7?
    • @megaapfel
      @megaapfel Před 7 lety +2
      Very noisy at high ISO. Also 16 megapixels are not much, but it helps a bit with the noise, because it allows more light per pixel. Another problem is that its image ratio is 4:3, which I personally don't like that much. I prefer wider images, but if you want to take pictures in 16:9 you are at 12 Megapixels. Also your aperture and focal length will be twice as long as on a full frame sensor, which is good if you want to make use of long telezooms, but bad for low light and bokeh. Here are a few samples, I shot recently with the G7. www.flickr.com/photos/146943457@N06/
    • @megaapfel
      @megaapfel Před 7 lety +2
      I used the kit-lense and a Sigma 60mm F2,8 so far. You can go up to ISO 3200, but 6400 is already really noisy. The Sony Rx 1003 has a much smaller sensor than the G7 combined with 20 Megapixels, so you can expect it to be even worse in low light conditions. The G7 is certainly good for the price if you are looking for a very good video camera. You'd have to pay a lot more to come close to its quality. It easily beats the Canon 70d in that regard. The Canon 70D is not a mirrorless camera, so the viewfinder is not electronic, which means you don't see how your image will look with your current settings, but it will be much more natural and won't ever lag. You will also be able to take more shots before your battery goes empty. But you will always hear the shutter, which you can turn off on the G7. For stills I'd recommend the Canon 70D or the Sony Alpha 6000 or 6300 if you want a little bit more. They both have APS-C sensors, which are a little larger than MFT. Or you can go all out and buy a full frame camera, if low noise at high ISO and shallow depth of field are important to you. Personally I plan on upgrading to the soon to come Canon 6D Mark II, simply because of better low light capabilities, more shallow depth of field, more resolution and weather sealing. It will be much heavier than mirrorless cameras and probably won't have 4K video though, which is unfortunate considering it will probably cost 3 times more than the G7.
    Wasn't looking for this but blown away all the same. I felt while watching that the A cam (G7) had a slight yellowish tinge to it's subjects' skintones but I'd rather have that with the capability to hook up an external recorder for better output quality than not.
    Great comparison, the image is warmer on the Canon, but on my points, the G7 wins 6 to 4. And when you're saying that the 5D Mark IV cannot export to 4K, it's a shame for Canon. What I would love to see from you is a video trying to warmer the image of the G7 to match Canon.
    I could tell one from the other all the way from the white balance difference, G7 is a bit warmer than the 5d4, but the 5d4 is a bit sharper and have a better low light performance. And in the autofocus tracking test i was a 100 % sure that A is the G7 because i have one and it always takes forever to focus, in opposed to Canon cameras that are known for being the best in the market for that purpose. One point worthy of mentioning is that i love how the G7 have the smoothest focus shift with no breathing at all, unlike the new Nikon D500 which jumps all around when focusing, however i wish it was faster :(
    we'll have to wait for the GH5 and see !
    I had B up 6-3. The dynamic range is is just so much better. The G7 holds up incredibly well considering the price differences, but thats often how things work - past a certain point, spending more money results in only tiny incremental returns. I couldn't imagine justifying the 5D4 over the G7 for a single-purpose vlogging cam, though.
    Lets also not forget, thats a ~$1600 dollar lens on that 5D. vs a $250 lens on the G7. This means the price difference as tested isnt 500 vs 3500, but 750 vs 7100.
    i think the best combo for relative low cost 4k video is: GH4, blackmagick video assist 4k, metabones speedbooster, sigma 18-35 f 1.8 / sigma 50-100 f 1.8
    When I wrote down my verdict - both cameras came out with the same amount of ticks. But the 5D ended up ticking the detail and focusing marks for me, which I think is the bigger deal than some slight rolling shutter reduction. While the Panasonic images were smoother and slightly less dictracting to look at in terms of noise - it really shows that the 5D's weird codec preserves those details and doesn't turn noise into mush, as appears to be happening on the Panasonic.
    That being said though - if I didn't have the 5D already for my photography and I needed a 4K camera for filming - Panasonic all the way! I wouldn't be able to justify the price unless I badly needed that autofocus :)
    At 2:40 there is a hot pixel (actually multiple hot pixels) for 1 frame at the bottom of the frame on Camera B. Having done a lot of post production work as a technician, I saw this very often on Canon type DSLRs that required spot fixes.
    I don't know how to actually give the timecode for that specific frame on CZcams, but you'll find it if you scrub through frame by frame after the first frame from 02:40:00
    I haven't watched through the video, so I'll be surprised if it's actually the G7!
    I think a lot of people forgot that the Canon 5D line was a stills camera first. Canon avoids putting pro level video features in their stills cameras now to avoid cannibalizing it's Cine Line.
    The Nikon D5300 is great for super sharp 1080p videos (no low cut filter, more sharpness), you can change the aperture and the sensibility in real time when recording a video with the manual M mode.
    I think B is better though the rolling shutter is a little bit worse. But I liked the colors more in the dynamic range test. They both are pretty close.
    B (Rolling)
    B (Low-Light)
    Draw (Shadows)
    A (Subject)
    A
    Draw
    Draw
    A (4k)
    B
    B (Auto-Focus) by a large margin.
    Total: B wins 4, A wins 3. So B is the winner.
    My rating
    Rolling Shutter - No comment
    Low Light - A
    H&S - No comment
    DOF - B
    Dynamic Range - A
    Midtone Boost - A
    Low Contrast for Post - A
    4K Detail - A
    Raise Aperture for Detail - A
    AF Performance - B (I think you should do this test twice or three times so it’s not just one lucky hit, because all other test are fixed and no other possibility.)
    A - Panasonic 4K HDMI output
    B - 5D4 1080p HDMI Output
    A- Panasonic can use speed booster
    B - 5D4 Can’t
    A - Panasonic good portability
    B - 5D4 Bulky and heavy
    A - Panasonic (some) with tilt screen
    B - 5D4 nada
    Price - Forget about it...
    I’m totally happy moving from Canon to Panasonic recently right after they announced that 6D2 without 4K, I should actually thanks to them for me to make this tough decision. Only downside on the Panasonic was the AF but I came from completely MF so I’m find using it completely MF.
    Took your advice and commented before the end. Surprised that it's a bit split for me on some of the tests. That said, 6 for A, 3 for B.
  •  Před 7 lety
    Well i am not an expert but i think the B has more points in my test. 4 over A=2. The rest i can not see the difference. I hope it helps. I think this is a very good way to judge the results. and learn what to look at in video and photo. Thanks.
    I know this video was made two years ago, but it's still perfectly relevant and doesn't fail to blow my mind. Canon seems really far removed from the video industry, and it doesn't take an expert to see it.
