Panasonic G7 Hands-On Field Test

  • The Panasonic GH4 is one of TCSTV's favourite cameras for video, and a very underrated one for stills. The new Panasonic G7 gives you all the GH4's still capabilities in a lighter, much less expensive body. They were even good enough to include 4K video! Is this the best budget hybrid body on the market? Chris Niccolls takes a look.

    Jordan and I have looked at the files closely at 3200 ISO and at the other ranges and to its credit the G7 compared very favorably against the competition. We were quite surprised. Now certainly the A6000 showed the most chromatic noise but that is easy to remove and we didn't want to process any of the files to keep things objective. Its hard to see on youtube but the main reason we still feel the Nikon and Sony are slightly better is that the Panasonic shows minor but visible smoothing in the files at high ISO. A little detail is lost and we feel the Sony and Nikon would process out better. Still what a fantastic job Panasonic has done with the G7 files. Its very close.

      TheCameraStoreTV Thankyou for this review, it's so clear and helpful:)! Do you think I can get a cinematic look from g7 or samsung nx500 in postproduction using after effects or should I consider sony a6000 (but it's not 4k)? I would like to make some short movies, low budget, high hopes:).. Thx a lot.

      Sto79Be I tried the a6000, a77II and GX7. I kept the GX7 for the video, and I'm sure that the G7 is even better. But the stills from the a77II were absolutely beautiful. Lumix MFT in general has very good stills, better video and more lenses to choose from (especially tele-zoom, which is important to me). GH3 has awesome video, too, so Panny seems to be very consistent in this regard. I found a6000 video to be very poor quality. a77II was better but the AF was hyperactive. Hope this helps.

      TheCameraStoreTV Great review as always! I have a question... I'm thinking about selling my DSLR (Nikon D5100 with 2 kit lenses: 18-55 and 55-200) and getting this G4 with the 14-140mm f/3.5-5.6 POWER OIS lens so I can shoot both tele and wide. I primarily take photos and not so much video yet, but 4K it's a big plus. Other big pluses for me are the portability so I can take it everywhere with me, awesome video capability, and a nice lens, I think. The bad thing is that the lenses are pretty expensive too for this G7 here so I wouldn't buy any other, so... For photography will not be that great. I usually like bigger apertures like 2.8 or 1.8.
      What do you think, is G7 better than D5100 for stills(sensor/lowlight/autofocus) with these kit lenses? And overall? I hope for an answer because it's a pretty hard choice for me. Thanks! :)

    It's amazing how five years fly by. We started with the gh4 as our main camera and g7s became our b cameras. We now use a varicam and the gh4 is STILL our b camera as nothing has replaced it yet. The g7s only had hdmi, which didn't hold up like the gh4 has. Next year the cameras will all change. All in only 5 years, it's crazy!

  • @HeathcliffBlair

    Thanks for the review. I bought the G7 yesterday (the review helped) and have compared its video with my GH4s at identical settings. Same 4K image resulted, although the G7 seems a bit brighter as the review pointed out. This may be because of some internal level tweaking going on rather than an improved sensor. Headphone jack is not a problem as I, for one, always record audio off-camera. Build quality is actually better than I expected (quite solid and not as plasticy as some have said, and better than, say, a Canon 600D), and it's not that much smaller than the GH4. The apparent absence of a potential S-Log (or V-Log whatever it's called) upgrade is no big deal either. Judging from some of the material I've seen, I'm beginning to suspect that Log profiles aren't all they're cracked up to be for mid-range cameras like this - people just can't seem to grade it attractively beyond a certain flat contrast point and it can end up looking mushy. The Cinelike profiles seem good enough for now.
    I had intended to use the G7 as a B camera with my GH4. Now I think they're both pretty much equal A cams. The G7 really IS a GH4 minus a few unimportant bells and whistles. Amazing camera for the price - five years ago or less you'd be waving goodbye to 10 grand for a camera like this. Canon, Nikon etc could be in real trouble if this keeps up.
    Thanks again.

      Extra: After doing a few low light tests, it indeed appears that the G7 has improved noise handling at higher ISOs - much more like film grain, and without so much ugly colour noise. I hope this can be ported over to the GH4 as firmware.

    I am an amateur/enthusiast photographer and my main focus is family photos and kids videos. Use to have canon T5i, sigma lens with point and shoot S110. Been waiting for a 4K solution, and i finally sold all canon gear and bought the G7 ($450 with kit on 2015 black friday) with LX100 ($480 silver also on black friday). I do miss some of canons functional features but i am getting use to panasonics layout and I love the G7 video quality with kit lens and photo with both kit and 60mm macro lens. The LX100 is as amazing. Panasonic's new 3 year warranty (after rebate) sealed the deal. This review is awesome and sums up my experience as well. As a budget (very amateur) film maker this seems like a good option for me. I wouldn't be surprised if it gets some unofficial firmware updates to lift that 30min video limit, after all that came out of the EU in 2007, taxing anything over 30mins an extra 5%.
    Are all the kit lens options pretty much naff or would it be worthwhile going for the slightly more expensive kit lens option?

    Excellent review. You helped me choose the GX1 as my street camera, and I'm considering this as my second Micro Four Thirds body. I'm not wild about the SLR appearance, but the fast shooting and video capability makes this a smart second camera choice for this platform. I have the 45-150 version of that kit lens, and I am very impressed with the sharpness. Obviously plastic mounts and the lack of serious sealing will deter professionals and photojournalists. But this looks like a great device for the enthusiast.

      I agree with I3AYAH here, it should be really great for vlogging or any video-shooting for that matter. The articulating touchscreen makes it easy to see what you are doing, it is light and compact enough to carry around daily. Also, you can propably get away with using the built in microphone, it is not as shitty as it could be. (Would still recommend getting a better one, but if you want to minimize the stuff you have to carry around you can go for the existing one.)
      You will never regret buying this camera if you want a jack of all trades kinda deal. Especially in this price region (i saw the g7 for 450€ on sale) it rocks.

      +Jack Hewitt I own the 70d and I am selling it to buy the G7. I need a good camera for video, and while the 70d does great video and has killer autofocus, it does suffer aliasing and dynamic range issues. It just isn't designed for video... but is superior for photography... which isn't what I'm trying to do. Plus, for the price, you just can't beat the G7 if you want great video. I went with the 14-140mm lens and the G7

    • @LouieCartoon
      @LouieCartoon Před 5 lety +1

      I own both the Canon 70D, the Panasonic G7, and the G85. I still prefer my Canon 70D for stills because it is weather proofed, has Dual Pixel Autofocus, and was designed for still photography. The G7 & the G85 are FAR superior for videography, and if you master the manual menus, you can accomplish superior stills too - it is just much, MUCH easier getting sharp stills from the Canon 70D versus the G7 & G85 (probably because of their patented Dual Pixel Autofocus technology).

I know this isn't the case (the GH4 they shoot with has a very very flat log profile), but its a sad statement that their image is being let down by its color grade and contrast tot he ponit I can't feel that it'd look better straight from the GH4 in default color profiles.

    • @cavalrycome
      @cavalrycome Před 9 lety

      Hamish McGregor The flatness is specifically in the mid tones like they're applying a strong backwards S-shaped tone curve to the footage. That will exaggerate tonal differences in the highlights and shadows while compressing mid tones, including the all-important skin tones, which have been looking awful in recent TCS videos. In my opinion, they're also wasting a lot of their bit depth by using such a flat profile for shots where they're not in danger of clipping the highlights and shadows.

    Regarding the new V-Log L though, I can't tell if it is just TOO FLAT to use, or if the flat lighting from the horrible weather that was approaching just gave you no contrast to work with...?
    What do you think Jordan, was there more punch to be had, or is this V-Log just a detail and contrast killer? Especially that shot around 9:40 was painfully flat, but I'm thinking maybe that was the fault of the weather...

    I just recently bought a Lumix G7 for the 4k video option. After having some stuttering issues, I bought a class 10 U3 card, as that was recommended on the web for shooting in 4K. The video plays back smooth on my camera, but when I bring it into Final Cut Pro or even try to watch the raw files in VLC or Quicktime, they stutter/lag like crazy. Are there any solutions out there for fixing this?? I even have FCP set to edit in 4K at the 4k resolution and 30fps. Going crazy here, so any help is appreciated.

      +Retro Game Remix In short your computer is too weak. For video editor's building a PC is the best option. You can build something far more powerful then the mac pro for much cheaper. If you hate the Windows OS( which 10 is good) you can have a dual boot hardrive with Windows and with OSX. You just choose what OS you want to use at start up. Just look up hackintosh.

    We got the Panasonic G7 with the 14-140mm lens for vlogging and travel videos. It's a fantastic camera for the price. The lens was a good choice because of the range you have. I got some awesome shots of boats from being on a ferry and I would have never got them if I chose a different lens. We just posted our first ever vlog if anyone wants to see a more "real world" use for the camera. The autofocus was hit and miss though as I only purchased the camera before we left and I hadn't nailed the settings yet.

    @SamsonOsztreicher Před 9 lety +6

    a bit of constructive criticism, I know you guys are nerds when it comes to grading etc and go for acuracy above everything, but your videos look very washed out, I think for CZcams you should bump up the colours and stuff for a bit more pop, it's all to do with the audience and where it's being presented, you have to think about what kind of feel you want, just a thought no hate :) #photogroahystudentrant

    • @TheCameraStoreTV
      @TheCameraStoreTV  Před 9 lety +6

      Samson Osztreicher My major goal with this grade was to demonstrate the wonderful dynamic range of V-Log L, which did lead to a more washed out look than our usual. Our next video with this profile will be the Leica Q, and it is a much more contrasty grade. Let me know what you think!
      Jordan @ TCSTV

    • @SamsonOsztreicher
      @SamsonOsztreicher Před 9 lety +1

      TheCameraStoreTV fair point :) the dynamic range of V-Log L is very impressive when looking at details in the highlights and shadows. What made me notice the washed out look the most was a shot of you standing in front of some trees demoing the uncompressed v-log, there was no real separation between you and the background

    • @jeremysmith1969
      @jeremysmith1969 Před 9 lety +1

      TheCameraStoreTV Yeah I think you did pretty well with the V-Log, as a tech demo, but just a bit more punch would be welcome ;) Then again, I also realize you guys appeared to be shooting some heavy overcast / rain, and that's naturally going to wash out, so perhaps this video isn't as "off" as we think?

    • @JoeGP
      @JoeGP Před 9 lety

    Bought this camera a few weeks ago. It's my first really "nice" camera and I'm really enjoying the stills and video I'm getting out of it. Did some practice 4k vids just to see the results and they really are amazing. Plan on doing a lot more. Your review helped me make my decision as I didn't want to spend a ton considering I'm a novice. Was considering the Sony a6300, GH4 and Canon 80d. Got the camera w/kit lens for a really good price. That said I've since laid out more cash for more lens,.....really enjoying the 25mm f1.7 and the 12-35mm. Thanks.

    This is the first review of yours that I've watched, and I really enjoyed it. The fact that it was set in my home province in a familiar mountain range was a nice bonus. A well balanced review that's helping me come to a decision - you've gained a new subscriber!
    In the past few weeks I've done a good amount of research on the a6000, d5500, and more recently started looking at the g7. The camera I buy will be my first "real" camera. I'm looking to spend approximately $1000 (Canadian) and I would like to have room to grow with whatever camera I buy. Essentially, I would like to purchase a camera that is better, both in terms of photo and video quality and shooting experience, than top smart phone cameras (I currently have a Samsung Galaxy Note 4, which does a nice job). So, though it was the early front runner, the a6000 is likely a no go due to the lack of a fully articulating touch screen and the lack of 4k video. I like the d5500, but the fact that I can shoot 4k on my phone, but not on the d5500 is an issue. Based on such factors, the g7 has become my new front runner. While it may not yield the best still image quality of the models I've listed, it appears that it can still give solid quality (better than high end smart phones, and more than enough for my needs), and the others feel outdated for their lack of features that are now readily available on smart phones.
    Am I missing a better camera model that ticks all of my boxes? Any other thoughts that would help me come to a decision? Thanks, and keep up the great work!

    • @TheCameraStoreTV
      @TheCameraStoreTV  Před 9 lety +1

    I have ordered this baby, which is out on shipment. I wrestled between D5500, T6S, Sony A 6000 and even Canon 70 D. Why I chose this, I will do a complete video but here are the key pointers
    1. 4 K video - That's gonna make other camera's looks like SLR's from the 50' isties :)
    2. Panasonic - Leica connection - I feel I am in the premium league of cameras
    3. Big enough for my hands - Most of the Mirrorless camera have very low form factor and hardly fits my hands - and a Pro DSLR, well you need monster hands to hold them. This is is best of the both worlds, light weight and big in size.
    4. Price - Well I knew that when you buy a camera you buy into the family, you also have to consider a lens the tripods at el. If you buy a cheap camera then the overall cost would be within budget, but if you start with an expensive camera then you are going to spend a lot on the lenses too. G7 is the cheapest amongst all the Mirroless camera.
    So that's my short feedback on the reasons why I chose the G7. More of it when I use the camera. Adios.

    I purchased this camera after watching this review, it was released in the U.S. The day I watched it.
    Replacing my a6000 with this because Sonys lens lineup aggravates me. So far I'm pleased and already have more lenses picked out that I want than Sony could offer.

    Great Job - I've heard about this camera G5/7! I've been shooting on a Canon 60D -- and it's been amazing --but... it's time for an upgrade and a change into the next level - i was split between Sony A's with their beautiful Zeiss Len's and have been using their zoom lens 16mm Arri SR film camera since the late 80's & 90's - the German optics and their Lens were incorporated into their DSLR series A's - i was very impressed. And also the G series which I've been drawn to by you other associates i'm working with --- you made a great argument for that model. I've been a DSLR professional since 2011/12 and i filled that with the very highly used, and popular dslr used exclusively for weddings in South Florida - the Canon 60D. But i'm ready for a change and an upgrade!
