- You might be asking yourself, "How do these two cameras even compare with each other; How is it a fair fight?" After all, Panasonic didn't intend the G7 to replace the GH4. Frankly, it's not a fair fight, but you might be surprised at how well the G7 performs.

dude the g7 ftw all the way!!! i have the budget for a $2k camera but the g7 has everything i want for an insanely great price!
I love my g7. I use a tascam dr60 to take care of my audio. So no headphone jack isn't a problem. I would think most video shooters use external audio recorders anyway in order to have the best audio. Love it's versatility, picture, functions and cost! Thanks for the comparison Videomaker!!
Thank you so much for such a great review. I cannot afford the GH4 so I purchased the G7. The 4K photo mode is amazing.
Just got my G7 to shoot alongside with my GH4...can't wait to see that high iso noise performance cause i've been disappointed with the GH4's low light since i've had it
+Adam Lord thank you for your comment. Noise is a weak point for the GH4 for sure. Thanks for watching!
Excellent review -- really helped me make my decision. I was really close to getting the GH4, but as someone just getting into semi-serious photography and video I'm gonna go with the G7. It will be a good beginner camera for me. Thanks much.
I honestly love my G7. I wish it had a headphone jack at times but it forces me to record audio separate which is never bad. What a great little camera.
Oh please...!
The life on the G7 is not an issue, seriously, it should not affect your final decision. Especially if you plan to rig it.
Thank you for your comment. the knobs, buttons and fold out screen are the things we think feel are sup par with the Gh4. Thanks for watching!
I definitely agree. I own G7 for more than two years. I used it more than any other camera. I had a serious car accident where my Panasonic prime lens was damaged but the camera itself just had some scratches. The scratches are still there, and the camera is still working :) just my 42.5mm lens got repaired after the big crash.
I liked your video and how you presented the two cameras. You let them speak for themselves which I appreciate. Excellent job.
Trading in my Canon 60D for a G7. No brainer.
Fantastic review! Seriously helpful. The G7 definitely suits my needs in terms of building my business to a point where I can invest in a GH5 down the line and retire the G7 to a bcam.
nailed it.
Oh...and the G7 only has a record limit in 4k. In regular HD, there is no limit. I have recorded 2 hours straight on the G7.
Damon Rambo what's the record limit for 4K?
Damon Rambo i wonder hows the battery life with screen turned on during 2 hours straight recording?
Cinematic Minutes/Cinematic Marriage 2 hours of 4k shooting or 1080p? i dont need to shoot 4k that much.
Cinematic Minutes/Cinematic Marriage 2 hour per battery is not that bad, i shoot wedding videos and currently thinking about to go for panasonic. for now i shot with 60d.
eznymorpheus Which camera are you looking at purchasing? The G7 or the G85? I'm looking at starting to film weddings but I want to know what camera I should look into, currently shooting with T5i
Time limit, dynamic range, no headphone jack are deal breakers for me for most pro work, including B-roll. However, if I have a cheap camera with me, i will often put the camera in someone else's hand to see if they come up with some quirky mobile footage to edit into a story. People tend to be more natural with a close friend than with the pro. I would never do that with expensive gear I depend on, but the G7 would be ideal for that - good enough to be usable, but relatively inexpensive. The G7 is a very impressive camera for the money.
BTW, my first camera from when I was 7 years old in 1962 was plastic and it spent 10 years around my neck and still works - yes, I still have it (along with the box it came in). Metal has a psychological grip on the mind but there are many plastic cameras that have proved to be very durable.
Bought a G7 after watch this video as I wanted to get into the hobby. Thanks for a very well made video and my G7 is amazing. 😃
Glad we could help!
Is it fair to say the G85 is the average between these two cameras you tested?
Three things:
1) Many of us use the G7. It is an awesome camera, and is perfect for pro use.
2) The headphone jack is irrelevant, since most of us who are worried about sound record to an external recorder, not directly to camera.
3) The video autofocus system is superior to the GH4 in my experience. Of course, this is normally only important if you are using it for an unmonitored B cam, but still...
Great insight!
I've found that the G7 consistently over exposes and clips the highlights. The luma values are usually in the range 40-110 (Rec709 colorspace) By reducing the exposure to EV -2/3 of a stop the luma values are in the 0-100 range where they should be.
The G7 noise performance is amazing
I bought the G7 refurbed by Panasonic for half price. I really like the fact that Olympus lenses can be used with the Panasonic and vice versa. What I've learned so far is that photography is part science and part art, you have to experiment to come up with different outcomes. Ever used a flash in daylight and changed the ISO? You get what I mean. You have to explore the possibilities. Be willing to break down all walls to expand your horizons. The record for the most expensive photo ever sold was recently broken by Peter Lik's photo entitled "Phantom" bringing 6.5 million USD, shattering Andreas Gursky’s “Rhein II" old record of 4.3 million.
If you're a pro, you'll be recording audio separately so I find the lack of a headphone input to be irrelevant.
Why does the G7 seem darker?
why does this question remain unanswered?
@@gilean6179 Because the jews don't want it to be answered.
Its a luma setting thing. The g7 is set to 16-235 or so and gh4 0-255. Im not sure tho but you can always change it
Thanks a lot! Gr8 rev! I will buy g7!
+Treneiro Vlog you're welcome!
No one would use the camera mike for audio. Shotgun mikes tend to be too far away from the subject in most applications. Recording the audio using a separate device and using the camera's sound simply to synch the externally recorded audio with the video is often a better answer.
My opinion, the GH4 in this test has weird black color definition. Seems to me that GH4 always trying to bring up the black/dark area compared to the G7. As we can see from the earlier montage, GH4 always looks brighter and brings up shadowed area, while the G7 looks more normal to me which keeping the shadowed area dark as it should be.
IMHO: During the iso test, GH4 to me tyring to bump up the black background, that's why noise looks terrible. In the other hand, G7 stayed cool to let the black background as it is.
I have no experience at all with both cameras, so it can be because of the specific camera characteristics, or there's a different setting somehow during this test. Moreover, I have no experience in video making at all :D
Again, it's just an amateur opinion.
Anyway, thanks for making such great comparison video!!
I have the G7 and it is amazing! It is half the price of the GH4 and it is newer! The technology is better and newer! :D
Hello. I went to film school at the Los Angeles Film School. I learned all the lingo. I took it serious when I was in my film classes lecture and hands on. Well, I am not a rich person. I am on a budget. I know the Gh4 is more for the pros. I went with the G7 it is affordable from B&H Video and still think to use it the way a pro shoots. I am well aware of not having a jack for headphones. Sometimes we have to work with what we can afford. I am one of the videographers for Japanese band Lolita Dark. So far I had gear from film school, but Ive been lucky to share equipment from people I know. It is now time I own may own and use a camera when I need it on the fly and not wait for when my peers dont need to use theirs. I will be using the G7 as a professional camera and in hopeing that it can make me money too. I freelanced too using film school gear, but since I graduated. I need to use my own gear. I also I am the Director of Photography for Lipstick TV here on youtube and about to get access to youtube location. Not sure if the Director will use CZcams gear such red cams and such. Not to get off topic for my own projects and of course Lolita Dark. I am aware to recording sound separate as an option. I will use G7 for my pro needs. Please give me tips any will help an upcoming filmmaker. Thank You. Excuse any typos I did not catch.
+Angel Padilla Is there a tip on how to say of a hack when I say hack is not like hacking the camera just a term I am using. To get a way to use headphones on G7 is that a lost option?
Oh my God! the noise test go me. I'm buying this now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just bought the G7 at Best Buy for a whopping total of $430(after taxes). Almost felt like i committed robbery, just amazing value for an amazing camera.
Lol store-way rubbery , g7 gh4 awesome cameras
I have a question: can I use an external monitor with the lumix g7( sorry for my english, I'm italian)?
Kiabo Surdo ok thank you very much!
My god, no noise on the G7 ! WTF ??? And as for the G7 body being all plastic, in 2-3 years the camera gets outdated long before the plastic starts failing. And I don't think it's a real issue even if it rains, you can put a small plastic bag over it and you can shoot it nicely even in rain, that's what I do anyway.
Critical Point
Ikr I love the g7 it’s my camera it’s amazong
Yeah...the noise on the G7 is barely noticeable unless you get waaaaaaaaaay up in the iso.
Thanks chris for your reviewAfter long search I made my decision I will pick G7 plus 42.5mm
you get it right GH4 noise performance worse than G7! I don't think so. GH4->IBIS and G7-> no IBIS, big difference, not mention here.
Seasons greetings hello from Atlanta Georgia thank you for sharing this great video have a great holiday
The gh4's noise is so bad.
most people who buy these camera aren't going to pro filmmakers with a lighting setup. They would most likely be working with natural light, so you bet they will need low light
Even after 400 the thing looks noisey as hell for its price lol. I'm not paying over a grand for something that has T3i noise levels.
Yeah well there is only so much you can do with a sensor that size. If they made a full frame camera they would rule the Mirrorless video market I am sure. They most likely won't because they would have to start from scratch with lenses.
Thank you making it clear. For me the GH4's dynamic range makes that difference, however, the G7 seems to correct motion skewing better.
the settings look wildly different. I think I may keep my gh4 & look at the g7 as a 2nd cam to replace my 70d instead of spending a mortgage on the A7rii
+DigThat32 Thank you for your comment. What settings are you referring to? When possible, every setting was unified for the review/tests. Thanks for watching.
the G7 footage is surprisingly good. I was thinking about getting a GH4 as a companion to my GH5... this gives me something to think about. Lens mount is the same right? What about batteries?
Which one has better dynamic range?
GH4 with V Log
So yha the winer is the gh4 plus with stabilization lens and other quality lens will make ur filming images lot better
My comment after watching a minute into this: I think regardless of professional category, both cameras (especially the G7) can be used for professional videography; at least for CZcams standards. Now back to the video. :)
Awesome video. I like that this was simple enough, even though I know very little about cameras, i was able to understand everything. Please consider a lumix gh4 vs g85 video and keep up the great work.
What is it about the G7 that allows it to have less noise at higher ISOs?
Thanks for this fantastic comparison video. Incredible insight. I need the Gh4 after watching this.
Hi Chris,
It's really a great review !
Thanks a lot,
Phil (France)
+Philippe Schultz Thank you so much! You are welcome!
thank you for this review. Been studying my LX10 and i'm trying to learn as much as the Panasonic system. I have been in the Canon system for sometime now.
I am no professional. I am not even a hobbyist but, for the past year I have been looking at different cameras to buy to start. I am probably going with the bridge camera FZ300. My primary objective is to make time lapse sky video and nature photography to make music behind! I do have to say, to someone who is an amateur sometimes dynamic contrast beats sharpness for effect on a shot. I don't know why, but for me I lean more towards that high contrast look. Maybe because I am more into sky and cloud shots and it makes that type of scene "pop"?
...which is why I chose a Sony HDR-AZ1 action cam over a GoPro a couple of years ago.
Muchas, muchas gracias. Estaba en duda si comprar la G7 o no, ya uso una GH5, ahora no tengo dudas, me ha sido muy útil esta información. Saludos desde Guadalajara jalisco!!!
The G7 is better then the gh4. The only thing we are waiting on right now is for a gh5
+G4merIr0nicTV I have the G7, betiful camera
+G4merIr0nicTV no v-log, no headphone jack, inferior sensor, im afraid this is not better than the gh4.
+Gonçalo Norberto Idk this video seems to prove otherwise lol.
+G4merIr0nicTV The G7 suffers more from moire problems. Something that most of these reviewers have overlooked testing. I also disagreed with the rolling shutter test. The tripod wasn't been moved from side to side as fast on the G7 test and certainly wasn't moving as fast at the point the freeze frame was taken. I have seen other rolling shutter tests between the GH4 and G7 and can confirm the GH4 definitely has less rolling shutter in 4K mode.
+Gonçalo Norberto fuck those minor issues, quality is quality and my eyes see the g7 as a kick ass camera at less than half the price. My biggest concern was the low light and I laughed when the g7 kicked gh4's ass. BIGGEST bang for your money=g7 hands down.
I'm going to move from Canon... What lenses is "must have" for panasonic? The crop factor of 2 is really deterrent for me, cause i wouldn't be able to use my lenses due to focal length changes...
+Елизавета Постол I personally save up and buy the Metabones Speedbooster! If you have canon glass you can use them with the Lumix cameras and the speedbooster gets rid of the 2 times crop factor! :D
+TheGoldenVoiceGamer 600$ for adapter is too much.. is there china adaptors, which reduses crop factor too?
Actually there is, focal reducers. I believe they go for $100 :D
+Елизавета Постол Your first lens or maybe the second one after the kit lens should be the new Panasonic 25mm 1.7. Its cheap and has a very good picture quality and a much bigger aperture than the kit lens or the sigma 2.8. An alternative is the Lumix 20mm 1.7. Its a pancake lens but costs much more. I dont think its worth it.
+Sam's Hardware thanks
Sure, there is less noise with the G7. No wunder, if you crush the blacks to an unusable degree. The G7-footage is (like with all camcorders and beginner cameras) made to look good right out of camera. Fine for documentations or wedding- cinematography. But you will hate the G7 if you go just a little deeper into coler grading and post production.
??? How did the g7 "crush the blacks" My mean other than the fact that the g7 is a lot cleaner, it looks like the same, I personally own the panasonic g7, and with a custom picture profile, I'm getting around 11 stops of dynamic range, so it's pretty decent. If you go to any noise comparison videos on youtube, you'll see that the g7 is just simply plain cleaner, and about color grading, as a previously canon DSLR owner, the g7 grades like a dream, so no, the g7 is pretty decent at color grading, it's not as good with the full frame sony cameras with s log, or the gh5, but the g7 is pretty decent for the price.
This is so amazing, I am about to buy g7, what about night shots, I really miss them in this video to be perfect! Still awesome comparison, well done. Thanks
+ombrfade Our low-light tests with the G7 at 12:07 were impressive, but don't expect night vision out of it.
+Videomaker I was thinking about outdoor night/low light shoots, in the city - thats where I will be using my camera.
I use the G7 + BlackMagic Assist (for 1080p 60fps) / Ninja 2 (all other framerates) + TalentCell 12v 9v battery + Fujinon ENG lens and am pleased with the G7 performance. 5-6 continuous operating hours off 1 of those batteries.
It sucks recording externally because of extra gear but it beats the internal codec. I'm coming from a pocket camera from blackmagic and having prores internally is something I really miss.
When recording externally, noise reduction is not used and noise is present. But, image is usable at 1600iso.
When recording internally, noise reduction does a fantastic job and is great. Usable in its entire iso range.
G7 did not cut off at 29min just created a new file and it was seamless.. Perhaps it's a video mode thing as well? Certain modes may cut off. Haven't tried 4K at 29 min+ I don't think I want to either hahah :)
Please do a comparison of the G7 against the GH5! Low light capabilities will probably be similar.
Qual é o melhor para comprar?
The GH4 can output 10 bit 4:2:2. I was wondering if anybody has checked the 8 bit 4:2:2 of the G7 against the 10 bit 4:2:2 of the GH4 in terms of how it stands well in color correction and grading?
G7 ... does it have clean hdmi output?
I liked the clarity of the g4. didn't like the shadows and being too realistic of g7, with the shadows.
I liked the noise time, and at the same time I didn't like it. The background from the G7 looks considerably darker, so the noise may just be crushed!
is it possible to transfer a film from the camera directlu to CZcams?
cool thanks for the video I'm going to get the G7 Panasonic help me a little bit more to know which one I'm going to go for because I was going to get the Panasonic LX 10
Dynamic range and color range on the gh4 > g7. I'll take that any day over extreme low light conditions. I'm a film maker and freelance music videographer and I've never needed to shoot over 1600 iso, and those are rare occasions. As long as you know how to use negative space and have a nice low f stop lens you won't need high iso. The highest I'm usually willing to go is 800. I use a gh4, btw ;D
You are simply awesome!
Wow, thank you!
How are you! It's great the result of the g 7 in high ISO. Dime I'm looking for a camera to record music videos, it's for a project and I do not have a lot of budget; But I need to do my best to get sponsorship. I will work in conditions with very little light and I need to get the lowest possible noise in low light conditions. I have in mind a new lumix g7 or a sony alpha a6300 used or a nikon d5500 or a canon 80d preferably used. Which camera would you recommend me? I plan to add a nikon AIS 50mm f1.4 lens, a 17-50mm sigma f2.8, a rokinon 85mm t1.5. I hope you can guide me a bit to get a result more than acceptable in terms of sharpness, noise, dynamic range and color correction in post production. thanks and best regards
good review, after watching I think I will purchase the GH7 (GOOD FOR NIGHT SHOTS) in the future to help my GH4.
+john cruz Thank you for your comment. We hope it works out for you! Thank you for watching!
Hi there. What is the differences between Panasonic LUMIX DMC-G7HK and Panasonic DMC-G7KS? I mean the differences which refers to the last two alphabets HK and KS. Thanks .
Don't quote me on this, but I believe the HK and the KS signify the region. So HK might be the Hong Kong version for example.... Just a guess. :)
Maybe. Thank you :)
People are saying that there's not a 30min record time limit but here you say there is.Any confirmation on this in a US model??
Thanks
+Scott Weigel Thank you for your comment. Yes, in the G7 there is a 30 min record time limit. no confirmation on if its only on the US model. Thanks for watching
So as far as downscaling both cameras 4K video to 1080p would you get the same result?
thank you for this great great video!! I was kinda of going back and forth between the GH4 and G7 and I was like I rather spend less and get good value and that just solidified my decision with the G7. That I am getting a great value for my money!
I would assume the audio monitoring could be taken care of by using an XLR adapter such as the Beachtek Ultra...running audio in and monitoring with the adapter (I primarily use my old XLR mikes, cables, wireless system).
That would be an acceptable option, but it doesn't let you listen to what is getting recorded. What if there was a problem with the input cable at the camera, you would not know it by monitoring before the input device. Hope this helps!
Had a brain fart there, sorry. Forgot I'd be monitoring ingoing, not what was being recorded. Good point.
Does the G7 cut off after 30 min of use? While Not recording. I want to use it for streaming as well
What’s the difference between the styles in the lumix g7 between the 14-140mm and the 14-42mm?
I have a 700d and just bought a g7 as another camera. Nice easter cash back with it. 700d has my lens, this has 4k.
Does the G7 have a bigger sensor? I don't know if you notice Chris, but the view angle for G7 was larger compared with GH4 view details. How is possible? Doesn't have same sensor?
+Victor Trintea, good eye, there is 1 or 2 shots that the viewing angle is slightly wider because of the small difference in focal length. However we also noticed that there is a tad bit of difference between the crop of the 2. Our thoughts are that the DSP on the G7 must be a bit more efficient than the Gh4 and so there is a bit less of a crop because it has a better ability to re-size. What do you think?
I have in mind to buy a camera for video and to be honest, I'm impress by the G7. Also my budget is under 1000$ for the starting point G7 it will help me to stay in the budget. I think I will still have some money left in order to buy a Zoom for external audio recording. Thank you for your reply!
Looking at the comparison shots, I found that the G7 acquits itself quite well, while the GH4 renders brighter, more detailed (and sharper images) with better chroma fidelity. The G7 is probably a good all-rounder best suited to average to intermediate-level photographers, while the GH4 has the capability to be a serious cinematography tool.
Very useful review. Thank you!
is it bad i dont wear headphones to listen to my audio? Ive been using the dvx100b, gh2, gh3 then gh4 since 2007 and never messed up the audio ever.
+PeglegMedia thank you for your comment. It's a best practice to monitor your audio both visual and with headphones as you shoot. Here is an example: its windy and you have a subject on camera with a lav mic on. The levels would look good with meters, but you wouldn't hear that the wind is going over the diaphragm of the mic making an unwanted sound. You wouldn't catch this unless you were monitoring with headphones. Thank you for watching!
The GH4 encoding migh be messed up because the G7 footage is better every time ?
I have two questions...does the G7 have clean HDMI out? Also, does it have a 30 minute recording limit in hd 60fps? Great video by the way!
Question to you, if I may, how does the video stand up to the GH4? I had a DSLR and found the video not 100% so I went to Olympus and I am considering Panasonic, which seems to be great.
Your review was great. Very well done, thank you!
definitely buying this.
G7 looks more cinematic & has a flatter image. Also seems to have more detail according to these comparisons. Also a wider crop factor than the GH4, similar to GH2.
+Ando Servis More cinematic and has a flatter image? Eh, no!
c100 or g7 which would you buy for recording lectures. The Camera would be any where between 12-30 feet away from the lecturer. Videos would be uploaded to youtube. Now I use a canon T5i rebel, but it has the cut off at 30 minutes and I have to sync with external audio. I would like to have an all in one unit.
C100 is a far better video camera than the G7. Mostly for usability reasons, but the HD in the C100 will beat the socks off the G7.
He Chris, thanx for the great video. Is the G7 dust free? I am only going to use
the camera for green screen footage. Therefore i think i will be fine
with a G7 + a kit lens 14-42mm. My only worry is the body of the G7. I
am afraid it will give me problems after a few years. Do you think this
camera will hold for 3 years or so? Cause by then, techniques have been
changed so much again that i would probably buy a new camera :-) Thanx
in front.
Is that a starbucks in the bottom left corner?
+Freediver HD yes. now look away, there is nothing to see here.
Are you guys based in Chico?
yes we are.
Thank you Videomaker! NICE!))))
why don't you mention about 4K crop on gh4 vs no 4K crop on g7?
The g7 is way better
MaximusMak agreed, that's why I own it (;
Seth Moto nice
Much better in terms of price...
can you shoot with the g7 in the flat colorless setting? v log or whatever?
+Jake Bonin no Vlog for the G7
Does the G7 have internal image stabilization? I think I saw in another review that it does.
It doesn't but 2/3 of lenses for lumix DSLR/DSLM have built in O.I.S :)
Is it worth it to buy a 12-35mm lens for the G7 if it is my first camera?
Absolutely! The stabilized lens from Panasonic is a great partner with the G7 :)
not fare test on 4:57 vs 5:12
Noticed that. Same for the noise test.
I am deciding between the Panasonic GH4, G7, and the GX8. Aside from all of the extra features that the GH4 has when talking strictly video quality, does the GH4 have better video quality then the G7 and GX8? I know it has V-Log which helps with color grading. Also it shoots up to 200mbps 1080p while the G7 and GX8 only shoot 1080p at 28mbps, does this make a huge difference for color grading and post editing as well? Because if so I think I will get the GH4.
@videomaker What lens was on the G7
What mode or setting was the g7 using for the iso test? Manual or aperture?
manual
Thank you
Is there a difference between lcd screens? Brightness, color accuracy and viewing angles.
+Kirill Kleykov Thank you for your question. Yes, on our G7 unit the screen had a magenta hue, but the footage didn't reflect that. Other than that, the Gh4's monitor was nicer, but didn't have huge amount of difference. Thanks for watching!
Thanks! I heard that there is color adjustment of the screen in G7. Is it possible to fine tune it and get rid of magenta hue?
I'm looking into buying the G7 camera for videography purposes ...and mainly because it falls in my budget and the GH4 doesn't.
My question is: What lenses would you recommend for this camera? The one I'm interested in purchasing comes with 14-144 mm lens kit.
+Armin Bravo II we would recommend buying the best lens you can afford. The video is only going to be as strong as your weakest link. The best part of purchasing nice lenses, is that they can go with you as you upgrade your camera body. Its been said, you date your camera body, but you marry your lenses. Thanks for watching!
I understand what you mean, but since I'm moving from a Canon to the G7, I'm not sure what lenses to be looking at. I'm leaving enough of a budget for good lenses, just not sure what to look for.
Thank you for your time and reply!
+Armin Bravo II typically when shooting video, you want fast glass. What that means is you want to get a lens with the smallest f number possible. Because it looks like you are looking at a zoom lens, finding a lens with a constant f number is also helpful. If you are always going to be shooting in situations with an abundance of light, both of these things will not be as valuable. realize that there is a crop factor of at-least 2x, so a lens like a 14-144 would be an effective focal length of 24 to 288. That's a really long throw. What kind of shooting will you be doing? watch this video, it might be some food for thought. czcams.com/video/owyyYN9amiQ/video.html
I was thinking of a len that would be great for night/low light settings. Any recommendations?
Also have you heard of these anamorphic lenses? Are they worth while?
Great review! Thank you!
Here's my he said you should be monitoring your audio so because it doesn't have a headphone jack it would keep it out of a pros hand. But pros know not to record your audio straight into the camera. It should be recorded to a separate audio recorder, camera audio should be used a scratch to synch up your better separately recorded audio.
