    I was the dubbing mixer/re-recording mixer who worked on this film sequence (all the exterior/location scenes were shot on film and then played to the live audience during the studio recording of the final episode). Before starting the dub I ran thought this scene with the editor (John Dunstan) and my reaction was exactly the same as you guys. The director Ray Butt told me that all the episodes were so hard to work on as the whole crew were laughing all the time. After this session he had the programme scripts sent to me ahead of each dub.... I'd sit in bed with the wife reading through them and killing myself laughing.... brilliant. So great to see it has become a classic comedy scene.

    The amazing thing about this scene is that the writer completely sets the viewer up to expect that Del and Rodney are going to drop the chandelier that they’re supposed to be working on. If I remember correctly he even used the same number of heads and handles, which was I think a way of showing people that he wasn't trying to hide the fact that it was taken from 'Open All Hours'. I'm going to make an educated guess that he asked the writer of 'Open All Hours' if he could re-use it and give it the proper build-up that it deserved.

    Guys...that is by far the best reaction to this I've seen so far. so much fun to see you both get side-swiped by this...and so did all us Brits at the time:). Both Nick Lyndhurst (Rodney) & David Jason (Del) were indeed threatened with being fired if they messed it up & they both had to remain in-character for an agonising 30 seconds or so after the 'drop'. You have to get into this show, it'll have you laughing your socks off. For a different kind of laugh, try any part featuring Trigger, the character is just gold. Especially fun are Triggers Broom & 'You put some music on Dave?'. And 'Dave' - Trigger constantly gets Rodney's name wrong - is probably one of the longest running gags in TV history.

    The whole episode built up to this iconic scene, the prop was supposed to be a Louis XIV (1638 - 1715) French crystal chandelier (and cost £6,000 to have this replica made in 1982). The actors were warned ahead of filming that they could only film it dropping once, any break of laughter would ruin the episode and as the series (season) would be one episode short would also ruin the series. Ray Butt the producer said he would fire them on the spot.

    Like most Brits I grew up watching Only Fools and Horses among many other unforgettably comedy shows, the jokes never get old and you can't help but laugh at their reactions to the "accident" the actors are incredibly talented, absolute comedy legends in their own right, this goes for The Two Ronnies, Father Ted, Dads Army, Allo Allo, Morecambe and Wise and Benny Hill, there are so many more that the list would be far to long to write on here, anyone who doesn't understand our British humor should definitely watch more British comedy shows like these, you will soon realize that we are not opposed to laughing at ourselves or stupid situations, so don't take it personally, these shows are absolutely legendary in our culture, David Jason (Del) is 82 years old now, I wish they would do one more final episode before David Jason retires from acting altogether.
    Thanks for reacting

      @@martinotoole9959 Martin, you seem to have missed the first part of my post when I said I grew up in Britain, I've never lived anywhere else, I touch type too (which means I don't need to look at the keyboard to type words), so forgive the slight spelling mistake if I miss a single letter in a word when writing a whole paragraph without looking at the keyboard, it does sound a little pedantic, considering you only replied to my post to correct my spelling and not to discuss/comment about the original topic. Also, the saying you're looking for is "people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones" Good luck to you too and Happy Birthday, may it be a prosperous one.

    "The Plank" by Eric Sykes is a must watch for anyone in the building trade. A largely non-dialogue film, of around 30 minutes in length, it relies on a series of sight gags involving mini-catastrophes while attempting to move a floorboard from A to B. The movie contains a Who's Who of almost every British comedian of the time in brief cameos. There are effectively three main versions, the original, made in 1967 and based on an earlier, shorter TV segment, a re-edited version from 1974 and a remake for ITV in 1979. All three are hilarious; I think it's the 1979 version that's on DVD.
    Another brilliant building site tale (audio only - I don't think anyone's ever attempted to put it on film, though there are many Road Runner cartoons that have a very similar vibe) is Gerard Hoffnung's - "The Bricklayer's Accident Report". There is a musical version by the Clancy Brothers and I think the Dubliners may have also had a crack at it.

    • @gdj6298
      @gdj6298 Před 9 měsíci +1

      Hoffnung's version is a masterclass in comic timing. He pauses and lets the audience figure out what's coming next, and that gets a laugh....THEN he actually says it and gets another one.
