Jemmy - crowbar. But Grandad thought he said "Jimmy" which is cockney rhyming slang Jimmy Riddle = piddle = a pee. So that's why he said he had one before they left home.
Thank you for explaining 🤗
Nice explanation, but it’s still going to be pretty hard for a septic to understand.
@@bustedfender What's a septic?
@@ruthbashford3176 Septic tank = Yank.
@@dave.nv9roamer I like that
One of the best-known & most popular OFAH scenes.
Uncle Albert being questioned in court is a great scene to react to.
This actually happened to the uncle of the show's writer, I think it actually happened in an old department store. His father fell out with him for writing about it, once he saw the show, he called his son laughing to apoligise!
To quote Will from The Inbetweeners..... ‘Can that be true?’
@@andrewmay1299 I saw an interview of John Sullivan, the show’s writer talking about it
@@williebauld1007 I have seen that interview too.
Lmao! 😂😂
@@andrewmay1299 no word of a lie...
Another great reaction Mandy. You’re absolutely right when you say that if a workman can mess it up, he will! It must be very frustrating to have to get them out to fix the thing they messed up 🤦🏽🤦🏽🤦🏽❤
S2 e7, A Touch of Glass.
Fun fact, because the BBC only had the budget to smash the one chandelier, they warned Del and Rodney not to laugh during the scene or they would be fired.
BBC back in the day had so many weird rules (probably still does), mostly due to being, in a lot of ways, an institution meant to produce propaganda in support of the vicious British class system of the time. I remember hearing that The Young Ones only had a musical act at one point because doing so automatically made them a "variety show" under BBC rules, and thus immediately gave them a budget bump.
surprised they are usually loaded
I can't imagine the show would have survived without David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhust being in it!
😳
Pure class. One of the funniest (and unexpected) scenes ever! 😂😂😂
2:03 "Grandad, do you want a jemmy?" - Delboy asks Grandad if he wants a jemmy (crowbar), but Grandad mishears it as "do you want a Jimmy?". In Cockney rhyming-slang, "Jimmy Riddle" = "piddle" or "widdle" (pee). So you guessed right!
Thank you 🤗🤗
We all knew that the clip would still surprise you.
Brilliant stuff Mandy 😊👍
😂😂
One of, if not the most iconic few minutes of UK comedy ... doesn't matter how many times you see it, it's always hilarious ... the whole episode & series is worth watching, it's a shame you don't want or have time to watch the whole series but I suppose time is precious when you're a world famous YT star 😊 ... loved the video Mandy & we have our fair share of "cowboy" tradesmen also ! 😂
I would love to watch full episodes, but copyright gets on the way!! 😅😅
@@MandyCaneLane Watch at your leisure, you don't have to react to them.
@@MandyCaneLane you can upload them to Dailymotion like everyone else does it you really wanted to, it's the best comedy ever written period. Another to check out is still game it's a Scottish comedy.
There was a couple of lines after this where Grandad says something like......"was it expensive?"....Del says....".no...but it was bleeding priceless when it was hanging up there!"...hehe.
😅😅
I hate when characters intentionally step on broken glass, it's one of my pet peeves as well. It makes no sense, but is probably a tradition that started in radio dramas, which relied more on sound effects to tell the story. Radio was still very popular in the UK at this time, so a lot of those cliches crossed over into television.
Ohhh!!! That makes sense!!! I also hate that no one says "goodbye" on the phone. Or how almost nobody says "please" or "thank you" on TV 🙄
@@MandyCaneLane ot also owes itself to storyboard drawings. It’s an obvious visual cue which directors cannot resist.
@@MandyCaneLane Or arranges a specific time or place to meet.
When I first saw this in the original broadcast I expected the chandelier to be so heavy as to collapse the two "catchers" in a heap so it really caught me out as well.
Same
That is exactly what I thought was going to happen.
I Loved your surprise when it happened. Ha! Ha! Great Reactions once again.
It happened so fast 😂
Famously, afterwards, David (Del Boy) said that it was all shot in one take only because they didn't have another prop chandelier to use.
So he and Nicholas (Rodney) had to be word perfect first time and NOT TO LAUGH OR GIGGLE when it crashes to the ground.
Oh, pressure was ON!! 🤪🤭
@@MandyCaneLane The Producer gave them a stern speech about not laughing, then during the single take, Nicholas Lyndhurst (Rodney) saw, out of the corner of his eye, the producer take a handkerchief out of his pocket and stuff it in his mouth to stifle laughter.
@@djco5782 that would have made me laugh more! 😅😅😅
Only Fools is a show I will never get bored of watching no matter how much I watch each and every episode.
I went to Belfast Council Hall, and their chandelier are controlled by remote to bring down to clean
Chandelier's just got fancier 😂😂
I thought you'd be interested to know Mandy that this scene is a true story that happened to the writer of only fools and horses John Sullivan father, when John's father told him the story John laughed and his father was furious as 8 workers got fired for destroying the chandelier, but years later once his father saw the episode, he rang up John and said ok it is funny
Dammit, Will... I was gonna say that! lol
@@RocksterOO1 😂😂
Tragedy + time/distance = comedy. Or possibly the Mel Brooks rule, which is that ""Tragedy" is when I stub my toe. "Comedy" is when *you* fall down a sewer access and die". Or both.
Lmao, thank you for sharing Will! 😂🤗
Going by the screenshot - you give it a dubious 5/10...or you may be constipated 🙂
😂😂😂
Hello Mandy, Only Fools & Horses was one of the great comedy shows of the past here in the UK but theirs plenty more to look at Faulty Towers, 2 Ronnies, Morcambe & Wise, Dad's Army, Porridge, Love Thy Neighbour episodes Eddie Return's From Holiday & Limbo Dance, Peter Kay Car share kidnap a monkey, Comedians Dave Allen, Peter Kay,Al Murray, Jasper Carrott, Check these out you will be in stitches believe me you will 😂😂🇬🇧👍
You have to watch this to the end. When the butler comes out (no doubt after hearing the crash) he tells Delboy 'His lordship will be most displeased'. Then Del asks him if he has his name and address. 'No, I don't think so', replies the butler. Del, 'Right, off we go', or words to that effect. All three run to the van, Dell struggles with the gears in the drivers seat, and Rodney literally dives into the back of the van as it starts moving, buckets flying out onto the gravel. Just as hilarious as the Chandelier crashing.
I remember this episode like it was yesterday. I was TWELVE!!!
thanks mandy, i love this sketch so much and have seen it many times but watching you react to it makes my day. i agree about the title, it detracts from the surprisebut in the end it was still a surprise the first time
I know how you feel Mandy, if you want something doing properly, do it yourself. Unfortunately, some jobs you just have to bring in the ' experts '. I wasn't a huge fan of Only fools and Horses, but this scene is an absolute classic. 😂
A jimmy riddle is cockney rhyming slang for piddle, ie to go for a pee. Cockneys usually only say the first word, so, going for a jimmy. Del asked Grandad if he wanted a jemmy which was the crowbar, so jemmy and jimmy. It's a play on words.
Thank you Mel 🤗
@@MandyCaneLane You're welcome.
It was actually revealed in a interview by Nicolas Lyndhurst (the actor who plays rodney) that on the filming of this scene they could only do one take cause each chandelier cost £6000 each and one of the producers Ray Butt said to Nic that if he Or David (del boy) laugthed he was fired. and also when they were filming the scene and the chandelier smashes Ray was in the corner stuffing a tie in his mouth to stop him from laugthing and apologising to Nic Lyndhurst afterwards cause he had to threaten to fire him so he didnt laugth
So happy you did this Reaction mandy , I was one of the many that suggested Chandalier LOL , cheers
Glad you enjoyed Joseph!! 🌈🤗
Fantastic reaction, loving all your content, your laugh is so contagious 😂
Thank you so much!! 🤗
Always watch your reaction videos, so genuine
Thank you so much Joe! 🤗🤗
Some clips just never get old lol great stuff
🤪
So glad you still got some of the shock valve (even if the name almost ruined the plot)
Missed the great line -Grandad '' is it valuable then?'' Dell -'' No...............but it was bloody priceless when it was hanging up there!''
😂😂
Your anticipation during the most tense part 😂
😂😂😂
The chandelier sketch is the best ever, here in the uk it’s as prominent as our history
Nicholas Lyndhurst who plays Rodney was told they only have one chandelier, and if he broke character, and laughed they were going to fire him.
😵🤣
Yep, totally agree about the naming of the clips. I mentioned this in your last OFAH reaction. Still a great reaction from yourself though 😂
I think, if I lived in Argentina, I would be on trial by now for attacking a workman 🙂
Honestly, you get used to everything being just awful... 🤷🏻♀️
I think I understand Argentinian work culture a bit. When I moved to South Africa one of my first tasks was to move a huge machine from one warehouse to another. A container was also due to be delivered so I organised the riggers for Tuesday and the container for Wednesday. Lo and behold, they both arrived on the same day at the same time 😂.
Lmao! How Argentinian of them! I needed some window guys to come fix a window at my house about 3 years ago. Went in person to book a day, still waiting for them to come... 🙄
For a bit of context, Del (Boy), Rodney (Plonker) and Gran(Dad) are NOT experienced in chandelier cleaning and/or maintenance.
Play on words Jimmy and Jemmy, Jimmy in cockney rhyming slang, is to urinate, Jimmy Riddle equals piddle!
Never seen this show before, but Del Boy (David Jason) plays Albert in my favorite Discworld movie The Hogfather. Now I have to check out the show! Great reaction!
Thank you Will!! 🤗🤗
You really should check out A Bit of Fry and Laurie
Hope you're doing good Miss Lane. This is an awesome clip to react too, looking forward to this 😁
Thank you Casino Clown! Hope you are doing fabulous! 🤗
Watch some classic “ Faulty Towers “, it’s awesome
I get your point but I guess the person writing the title assumed a UK audience would mainly be watching it and you’re going to struggle to find anyone older than ten here who hasn’t seen it several times already. Ofah is on tv every Christmas. Bit short sighted of them though.
Because its sugar glass not actual glass they walk over.
You are going to be a reaction video superstar. I spent last night watching your idiot abroad videos, you are one of the few Americans that gets British Humour and when you don’t get something you don’t put out a fake laugh etc. Love your facial expressions, and bet your good fun to hang out with. Ohh and super cute with it!
Thank you so much!! I am so glad you enjoy my content, I love making these!! 🤗🤗🤗
Police squad series, comedy,, music Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa I'd rather go blind live, Stevie Ray Vaughan Texas flood live, ACDC ride on 😊😊
Perfection.
F**king classic! ♥️
Up there with Del falling in the bar, they were under so much pressure as they couldn’t laugh, could only do in one take, had the scene collapsed, no episode and no series…so a lot depended on it. And a producer with a sock in his mouth out of shot so he didn’t laugh…solid pressure
Lmao! 😂😂
Try the Batman and Robin scene next for Only Fools and Horses - absolute classic
Some edits of that scene have them running out the door as soon as it hits the floor which is funnier.
Lmao! That would have been a different kind of epic 😂😂
🇬🇧 Norfolk with you love your reactions , they he’d to do this in one take must have been hard to keep a serious face
Agreed!!
Knowing the chandelier is going to smash isn't a spoiler. It's obvious from the set up that they're going to break the chandelier somehow. The comedy is in the way it happens, subverting your expectations. Watching for the first time you think Del and Rodney are going mess up somehow but they never even get the chance.
Here's one for you Mandy: I’ve decided to sell my vacuum cleaner - it was just collecting dust.
😂😂😂 Coincidentally, I just got a new vacuum cleaner and it is amazing! I have been vacuuming everything these last few days! Trying to leave no surface unvaccumed 😅😅
Lol, get it off your chest. You don't want to sleep with all that trauma giving you nightmares. 😂
So, Argentina has literally nothing, and the one thing they do have is messed up. (Not doing service in Argentina). 😂
Now you are getting it Jason!! 🙌🏻
I wonder dose that internet kid provides his survives in India too? Because i had the same experience while installing my wifi it was a mesh cable running through everywhere unorganized and at minimum 7 to 10 ft of extra cable by the modem!
Lol, I mean it is all they do, can they not do it right AND make it look decent? 🙄
Hi Mandy 😀 It must be so difficult trying to understand English, especially with colloquiums, cultural references peculiar to the UK and in this case, Cockney-rhyming slang. "Grandad, do you want a jemmy?" refers to the tool used to pull floorboards up, but Grandad mishears Del (for comedic effect of course), thinking that he asks if he wants a 'Jimmy'. In rhyming-slang, a Jimmy is short for Jimmy Riddle, ie a Piddle (pee). With the thick London accent as well, it isn't easy to understand, so you did very well! See ya x
Also some of the Jokes start in one episode and you only get the pay off in a different episode, or season (just ask Dave) or in a completely different television show (just ask the Jolly Boys),
or little britain
This one I haven't seen yet!
You’re doing tile? You’re doing tile work. Hmmmm. Are you married? 😂❤
Maybe the guy u hired was a demolition expert, instead of a internet expert
Saw this in 1982....never watched the show again....ill stick with funny stuff like Spaced or Black Books. You know, comedies😁
I think it would be a good idea to call that workman back, saying yoy have another job... Y cuando le tengas en casa le pegas cuatro hostias... Then ask politely to fix the mess. Worked once for me. He even found the exact same tiles.
They never answered my calls after that though...
Called to complain and they are sending a new guy in 2 weeks 🙄
@@MandyCaneLane Wow....
Everything I was going to say has pretty much been said by someone here before me, as per bloody usual. lol
But one (off topic) thought did occur to me.
Living in Argentina & speaking fluent Spanish, as you do, how often do you actually speak in English?
Is this channel the only place where you speak your mother tongue on a daily basis?
Your public needs to know! 😜😁
I speak to my brothers and my parents in a spanglish mix, my boyfriend and I speak mainly spanish but I can throw in some words or sayings and he will understand just fine. But yes, my channel is the only place I speak 100% english, and since I can't do spanglish which is what I am most used to, I sometimes get lost for words! 🤪🤗
@@MandyCaneLane Thanks. I was really curious. I don't know why. 😂😂😂
This scene cost so much to film that they only had 1 take of it. If they made any mistakes, like them laughing, then the whole series (and the show) wouldn't get any more funding by the BBC. The crew had to shove things in their mouth to stop them laughing
😂😂😂 I hear socks were involved 🤪
👍
Sia made a song after watching this!
😂😂😂😂
Do you think this is where Annie Lennox got her inspiration from?
🖤👸🏻🖤
He broke things in your house he must be a bulider on the side. That's the first time I heard that
Quite common here in Argy unfortunately 🙄🤷🏻♀️
👍😁
have you seen the inbetweeners
I have seen the first episode but no matter how I edited, I couldn't upload because of copyright 😓
Ever thought about moving out of Argentina? Which leaves the question, why move there in the first place? Rotten internet and no Twix, that would set anybody off, wouldn't it? 😀
Every single day. I was brought as a child and ended up stuck here. Lol
In all fairness, had the been correct then the wieght of the chandelier would have cause them to be pulled together
😂😂😂
lol... I had the same experience with workmen in Honduras.. They screwed everything up.. I don't think they got a single thing right..
How Argentinian of them 😂
They always cut just before one of the best lines. Grandad asks "is it valuable?" Del replies "no, not at all, but when it was up there it was bleedin priceless!"
😂😂😂
I am new here, you are gorgeous. Enjoyed your video.
Lmao, thank you Victor! Welcome to the channel and I hope you enjoy your stay here! 😂😂🤪
The first joke about a jammy, a jammy is a tool what you use to get nails out. Grandad thought Del said Jimmy, Jimmy is Cockney Rhyming Slang for piddle (another word for peeing if you don't use that in the US). So quite simply Jimmy Riddle = Piddle. With Only Fools it helps but not necessary to know some Cockney Rhyming Slang as they use it quite a bit. You can Google it up though.
Thank you for explaining Paul! 🤗
So the workers in Argentina were trained by watching Only Fools, well at least you have some stories to tell, other people no stories, just have boring lives,
Lol, that is deff one way to look at it! 😂🤪
OF and H Watch Batman and Robin
The Next Iconic Only Fools Clip is Batman and Robin.
Only a little bit of Context is Needed.
They are on their way to a fancy Dress Party (not sure of the American Term) maybe Costume Party)
But they break down in the Middle of Peckham (Where they break down I actually live less than a 5 minute walk)
So del and Rodney dressed as batman and Robin, decide to abandon their van and make a run for it to get to the party
.
That's all you need to know.
I believe this Iconic clip was voted the Funniest British clip of all time xxxx
Lmao, I already watched it with no context! But you did answer all the questions I had. Haha, need to edit it though, so will publish it in the next few days 🤪
@@MandyCaneLane look at you, Mandy.
Ahead of the curve.
You would'nt normaly walk on the glass but its for the shows sake....sigh
All shows since forever, never made sense. Someone said it probably dated back to radio shows and was a trope that just stuck. That makes sense.
shame you looked it up first it spoils the whole thing
This isn’t a show that translates well to other countries at all
I enjoyed this clip 🤷🏻♀️
CZcams video titles are just the fooking worse.... For example...
A 6 year old girl makes a 50 yard basketball throw.
A kitten Sneezes and farts at the same time.
Man makes 20 pancakes in under 30 seconds.
Rally Car flips over 3 times loses a wheel and carries on driving.
Woman in white pants coughs and shits herself while waiting for a bus.
Drunk Asian argues with a horse and get's kicked in the face.
CZcams and the way it's search engine works, or did work, meant you had to put words in the title that would be searched for. So now because the kids watching YT are now no longer kids and are making their own videos still use that old style of video title. That's why most titles are spoilers. So when I see a video with the title, "8 year old Kung Fu girl breaks a stone with her head", I really don't need to watch it. But 50 million idiots without imagine did need to watch it.
"An 87 year old italian lady tosses a pizza base in the air and does 3 backflips before catching it".. I'm sure that is a good video to watch but I know what happens. lol
You make some very good points 😅🤪
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Only_Fools_and_Horses
If you plan on reacting to the full show then I recommend not watching clips like this as the most famous scenes are what is on CZcams so it will spoil stuff for you.
Full episodes are complicated because of copyright 😅
