Back in Micky’s day at school - from the age of 12 up - everyone boy and girl, did metalwork, woodwork, cookery, and needlework. In my first year i made a metal enamelled pendant, a stainless steel signet ring, oven gloves and learned to cook several foods like pies, cakes, scones, sausage roles, Italian pasta, sadly times have changed. At my school those boys leaving school at 16 could do mechanics. They spent a year stripping a car entirely to bits. Then in their final year they had to fully rebuild it, get it running and drive five laps of the school fields. Now that was schooling.

Good Reaction to a great London comic. Micky DID come from a poor part of The East End Of London and tells many stories about some of the "activities" surrounding his poor but VERY loving upbringing. It was a very solid London working-class Family. He actually sold the most tickets in the WORLD in 2017 without leaving The UK ! lol
Now he lives in SOUTH East London ( there IS a difference ) in one of the most Middle-Class areas and he loves to mock his new neighbourhood and the contrast between where he came from and where he is now. PLEASE watch Micky: "Peeping" or "Lazy French" or many others to see this well-loved Comedian. :)

They had both wood and metal shop classes in my Massachusetts middle school. Everyone took these classes in 6th and 7th grade. Then in 8th grade everyone took home economics, where if we had any fingers left...we learned to cook and to sew on on a sewing machine. Lol In 7th grade metal shop our teacher called us "turkeys" whenever we did something wrong, usually because he hadn't completely explain it. He liked to yell right when we were about to use a device to cut metal that could cut your arm off! I was stressed and panicked every time I was in that class!

Brighton is one of the traditional British "Seaside Towns". It's on the south coast, so I would imagine a lot of Londoners would have traditionally went there in the summer. Probably many still do. The equivalent seaside town up north is probably Blackpool. One thing that Brighton is known for these days is the high gay population; it's something of a "gay capital of the UK". That's about as much as I know about it.

One of my favourite Micky Flanagan bits is quite subtle unless you know what he's talking about, where he says "I gotta sign on and get back to work!"
"Signing on" is how we refer to collecting unemployment benefits, sometimes referred to as "The Dole", or in Scotland "The Broo".
The reason for Micky's joke is that the Cockney's (Traditionally East End Londoners) are stereotypically considered rogues so the idea is he's signing on and claiming unemployment benefits, while still working (usually on a cash-in-hand basis) and earning money there as well.
It's just a throwaway part of the larger joke, but for some reason that little detail always slayed me.

Brighton is a little sea-side town about hour and a half's drive from London. Micky Flanagan does use a lot of his local working-class talk so it must be harder for Americans - but he's still very funny. Loving your vids anyway, gentlemen. Cheers.

I've got a broad Brummie accent, I can't use anything voice activated even if I try and speak proper, though I did start trying different accents and my TV remote understands my awful attempt at a Geordie accent.

@@paulhanson5164 I worked at Carphone in Bristol through most o' the first decade of smartphones.. The pain on their faces when a scrawny Danish guy with an Essex/Cockney accent could make it work but the local who'd just been taking the piss a moment ago was now shouting at the phone like it was a Barman on the Costa del Sol.. Saw so many people have to tone down their distinct and unique accents just through working customer service, or dating.. That said - if the remote gets you, what else matters!?
