8 Of Our Favorite LA-Area Restaurants | Legendary Eats Marathon | Insider Food
I really hope that these restaurants can last through the lockdown so we have places to go binge eat at once this is over
The prime rib joint, chocolate place, and the ice cream joint might have trouble.
Black Jesus If 8 months is “anytime soon”
@Black Jesus We would all like to believe that, but in reality 'any time soon' is 6 months tops.
Stay safe!
Don’t worry, I’ve ordered from Philippe several times since the pandemic. 😊
@@lmaobox4068 black jesus ? You mean michael jordan?
who else’s only came cause of the donuts on the cover i know i did lol
ME! 🙋🏿♀️
I have a sweet tooth, like a mother n that's exactly why I'm here.
✋✋✋✋✋
i live less than 2 miles from that place
Those are one those desserts that look better than they taste.
As a near-native Angeleno who's traveled across the country and now living in the East Coast, I can assure you L.A. has the best food in all of America. The diversity and flavorful-ness are unmatched.
hahahah so true
yeah the food that they get from other countries cuisines 😂
Native Angeleno here, ummm, no. No pizza or Chinese food compares to NYC.
@@dobees8183 flushings is pretty fire... but ya gotta give the SF Bay Area a shoutout for their chinese food
Phillipe was extremely popular during the pandemic. Huge takeout orders kept them humming along. One of the companies in the area ordered 70+ sandwiches every day. The downtown LA businesses helped each other. Pleasantly surprised by the sense of community in the City of Glitz.
Lies again? UFC WWE88
I have been there lots. Took my kid there lots.
Shout out to all these owners and their family’s for working hard for their dream.
Families ffs.
Shout out to LA for destroying so many of these businesses.
You can tell how much it means to the families. It's a testament to the quality of people running these places that they're around decades later!
If you are reading this, Know you are loved by many and bless you!🥰
You are loved too... Thanks for the comment. ! 🤗
Lovely comment, thank you and you also.
Arrchoooo
thanks
The strawberry donut reminds me of a hand held version of Marie Calendar’s strawberry pie back in college. YUM 😋
The best , authentic Mexican in my town is also in a gas station/convienence store..theres a line every day..Lupitas.. State College PA.
As an LA guy, I can attest that these are some of the legit cheap eats in town. More can be added, but great place to start with these 8.
I have a bunch of top 10 lists of LA restaurants if anyone needs additional rec. 😀
Rockstar Eater I headed over to your channel, liked what I saw, and subscribed!
Vee Cee same here! nice videos, you’re going to be huge
I do! I plan on going to these places when I visit LA
@@geegeel7907 😀
Yessss pls!
That meat at Lawry’s is so rare it’s still moo-ing!
Yes
😂😳🤪
😱😱😱😱😱I hollered, WHOA SHE BIT THE🐂🐄🐃🥩
It’s prime rib it’s supposed to look like that
Wrd that shit looks bad
The Donut Man is my ish!!!! Those strawberry donuts really live up to their hype and I'm not even a stuffed donut person lol. I love them❤️
Tigertails are life!
TigerTail donuts!
watching this today and i realized i can finally go get a strawberry one
@@reheatedpizza7292 lucky
Omg i want that strawberry donut 😞
i used to live 2 blocks away from there. from 1972 to The mid 90's. as a kid my mom would send me to get her a strawberry doughnut when they sold them. my childhood home is no longer there and i relocated to Denver, Co. so i'm with you on wanting one..lol
This strawberry is one of the highest pesticide list.
I hope all of these mom and pop places are still around after this corona-cluster is over.
Shout out to Mashti Malones Ice Cream, they're the real deal I used to live down the street from them. Also right above Mashti's is one of the best barbers in LA, Handsome Devils my boy Matt hooks it up!! In the same plaza they also got an excellent taco stand called King of the Grill used to head there once a week at least.
Always wanted to try that taco spot. Good to know!
I moved to LA and lived there for thirty years before heading back East again. One of the things I miss the most besides all the stuff to do is the food. I learned about all kinds of cuisines by living there.
Thanks for repatriating. More now need to follow. Too bad our Anti•Okie laws were deemed unconstitutional. We need millions truly to repatriate from wherever they came from. Folks have been overstaying their welcome since 1980. Sincerely glad you left
Watching this during Ramadan🥺
The bad thing about this video is everything looks good.
Then you obviously come from the boonies.
Please stay away from Manhattan
the donut man is legit, on any given day at virtually any time whenever i'm driving down 66 and i pass by it there's ALWAYS a line, even when i'm getting dinner from peppertree across the street i look out across the street and see tons of people lined up for donuts at 6pm
Wow I love that these were all mom and pop classic shops rather than fancy boujee new wave restaurants. Loved it! Definitely want to make a trip out to try these thanks!
Dad took me to phillipes my first time in 1980. I would always get a baked apple with my dip.
me watching this while making a box of kraft dinner
the sheer amount of food in those servings blows my mind.
how, the hell, does anyone get thru all that.
watch me
Really carefully!
@array s I think you mean freedom and weight sensitive food eating

One bite at a time.
Doggy bags. A friend told me her sister moved to Houston from Aberdeen Scotland due to oil related work, within weeks her sis put on 42lbs, she learnt that people in Houston eat half out then take the rest home. But in the UK places don’t do that due to H&M’s and you need to sign a disclaimers for taking sit in food out. Also. My friend her sister who is in her 50s grew up with that clean your plate mentality that a lot of postwar generations grew up with.
I feel like home cook meals probably the best
My late father worked in L..A.. when I was growing up. One day, when I was about 13 he told me, “Come on. Let’s get something to eat.”
He took me and my older brother to Phillipe’s and Canter’s for our two main meals. We lived in Glendora so we ended the day at Donut Man. #memories
Solid day right there
why are you torturing us during lockdown?:'(

You do have the option to not watch it.
If they don’t post anything i think i’ll be more miserable
Emily King Very, Very good point
Donut man is so classic :)
I love you
Philippe’s has the best french dip sandwich I’ve ever tasted
The strawberry donut from the show YOU 🤤
The doughnut shop story is so lovely. The American dream. Community. Making wonderful, delightful, over the top things and prospering off the land's bounty. This is the America I've missed hearing about!
That little girl and her dad were just too cute🥺
Remember my mom taking me to Philippe's 50 years ago! had a lamb dip last weekend Still great!
My parents took me to Philippe's when I was a kid in the fifties. I was there a few weeks ago, when I visited LA for Christmas. They haven't changed. They're great. BTW they're only a block from Olvera Street and Union Station. Go have fun.
My grandpa grew up in Culver city and always went to Titos. My grandparents first date was there. Went there in March and was great.
33:00 "Oh, I'll get one, maybe two, see what else is on the menu..."
*Returns with 6 boxes of donuts 🍩🍩
Ngl, that would be me
I am thinking of all these hard working people running these small businesses praying they are surviving this horrible time. Small businesses are the backbone of our country. Please come back. We will all be there for you when you do.
I never imagined a strawberry donut would make me weep for joy. They're gorgeous!
“I wasnt expecting that burst of butter cream but im happy it happened” @22:30
@15:47 xD
Everything was so satisfying to watch. It all looked delicious!
I've been there several times with foodie friends. They have a variety that's very impressive. We've stood in line for as long as an hour. People line up as late as midnight for these treats. I like the people who do that too. There is something about folks and how much they enjoy food without sweating the calorie load.
Phillipes...lamb double dipped add jack cheese mac salad original lays one pickle and a lemonade before a Dodger game of course! 😍😍😍
Went to 3 of these in LA last time I was there. Amazing food
i haven't had breakfast and lunch, and it's almost dinner time and I don't even know if somethings gonna go in my stomach today lmao
and here I am watching foods
Villager That's cause I stole your bread
THAT ICE CREAM LOOKS INSANELY DELICIOUS
The Donut Man has the best donuts I’ve ever had!
Why am I watching this! Today is the 100th Monday that I decided to start a diet
He totally dinged the door when he got out of his car lol
Absolutely! 😂
Philippe's before a Dodger game, that's a family tradition. Beef and pork for me, double-dipped. Those nice crusty rolls stand up great to all the dunking, and the jus is sooooooo tasty. Do watch out for the mustard, though -- that stuff will singe your nose hairs off, so taste a little dab before you get liberal with it. You gotta know what you're getting into.
I've never been to the frankie place, though -- that sounds completely like my kinda jam. Gonna try that for sure!!
Wow! This looks so amazingly delicious! Thank you for sharing this. 🙌🙌🙌
Shout out to Edelweiss! My gf at the time, now wife, is from Germany. Born and raised there and the Edelweiss flower has meaning to her as I'm sure it does for a lot of Germans, so giving her chocolates from a specialty chocolate shop named after a symbolic flower really got me in her good graces lol. She married me, so it worked! 😂
🤤 This is making me want to catch a flight from the UK
In the 50s and 60s it was sit down service with professional waiters in uniformed black pants and white shirts. Most were elder gentlemen adding to the old school ambiance. I went often. I forgot about the Langers Deli. I lived close to Canters on Fairfax but recall grabbing pastrami sandwiches to take home after working for Transamerica Corporation, one of the first conglomerates that included Occidental Insurance on Hill Street.
Everything is great but the STRAWBERRY DONUTS ARE DIVINE PERFECTION.
Been to Philippe’s, been to the donut shop (they also make peach), I got those donuts for a bake sale!!! Been to Langer’s, the #19 is that pastrami sandwich!! Tito’s Tacos was my lunch spot!! I worked in the area..
My earliest memory of going to Lawry’s is when I was about 3yrs old!! Best garlic mashed potatoes!!
The Donut Man, originally called Foster's Donuts, opened when I was in jr. high (now called 'middle school') back in '72. It was an instant hit, and kids all clamored for their daily donuts. I always wondered why they changed the name, but then realized another iconic Glendora establishment, Foster's Freeze, may have been a factor. You couldn't just say, "Meet me at Foster's" because then you had to figure out which Foster's to go to. And yes, Donut Man's donuts are absolutely fantastic. They took 2nd place in a national donut contest some years back.
The donut man, blessings to that Man and his family.. strawberry donuts hittin
This was the best 34:43 minutes I have spent watching people eat.
The Donut Man is amazing! I love the strawberry donut! 🤤🍓🍩
When quarantine is over I’m going to every one of these places! 😩
ME TOO!!! I want to get my siblings to do one place a month; should be a fun rest-of-year!!
When it's over? Will we live long enough?
Did u go
Where did u earn money for that
Did u go
Happened to find this video randomly. It’s so nice to see Titos on here! I’ve been going since i was little 😋
60 years running Langer’s …. Amazing. Lucy BTW got her idea from her experience at SEE’s Candy , another California Treasure
This video should be called "Remember when we had good hosts ?"
28:46 The Donut Man the delicious looking strawberry donuts in thumbnail 🤤🤤
Was I the only one when Tito’s tacos came up, and later started to sing their commercial? Only me, okay.... SoCal people know about the commercial
so I've been to Donut Man and its INCREDIBLE. If you are ever in the area, you've gotta go!
Love your show. Love the struggle to success stories. Love that a humble gas station can have some of the best food in the city. Love the hard work and love put into the hard work. The food experience is just wow, the preparation, presentation, partaking and breaking bread. It's a good thing too I'm all the way out here in East Africa....only way to stay slim away from that yummy yum stuff! Covid19 may mean a lot of take away for the time being.
If you're ever in Los Angeles again, you HAVE to stop at Edoughble Sweet Shop on South Robertson Boulevard! The edible cookie dough there is absolutely incredible, and the employees are super kind. Six out of five stars!
Langer's pastrami sandwich is looking delish 🤤🤤🤤
Been going to Phillips, Langer's, and Lawry's since I was a young. I am now 80 years old and I still think they are the best. The food is one of the best thing of being a Native Angeleno.
Amen! We are so lucky. A native Angeleno here too. Love Langer's and Phillips. Only been to Lawry's once. Though I did go to the Lawry's California Center in Cypress Park many times. Beautiful Mission hacienda style complex with gardens and outdoor dining. Unfortunately, it closed years ago
Just moved to SF this year after being born and raised in LA all my life & it really says something about these places that I can recognize them all of them just from the pictures in the intro...😋 Man I miss all these places so much.
This video is getting saved. I’m going to be exploring this city more than ever after the world opens again and I’ve been shaken out of my usual boring routine
wow, that pastrami poutine looked amazing! yum!
It's rare that the Donut Man has both the peach and strawberry donuts!
I've been going to Phillipe's since I was a kid and I'm 30 now. It's never not been awesome, try their chili! I also lived down the street from the donut man.
Portion too small at Philippe . They need a footlong
Mashti is an Iranian/Persian name, but where did they get Malone's?! Lavender flavored ice cream sounds absolutely divine! 🍦 💜😋 Praying these special eateries will survive the Covid lock-downs. 🙏🏻🥄 😒
Great Video. I'm glad I live a couple of miles from the Donut Man!🍓🍩🍓
Langer's is the BEST pastrami sandwich I've EVER had.
Tbh I wanna try every single place in this video ! I’m not a picky eater and love exploring new foods! ♥️
You go girl 👏
Thank you the lockdown for keeping me thin 😋
Im gaining
Langers hands down is the Best Pastrami anywhere ❤❤❤❤
0:43 Never let Joe Avella park next to you when a cafe orchestra is playing "We Three Kings" in the background.
The lawrys prime rib u can still hear it saying MOOO
I definitely wanna go to the donut and the chocolate shops ❤
Somosree Roy hey sweety! czcams.com/video/ella3GDaias/video.html
Thanks for the list! Heading up there in February (when strawberry season starts).
oh wow! i so agree with every place you guys just gave a review yummm!!!
did no one notice him bang his door on the other car in the beginning of the video at 0:40
MrRaymondhy hell yeahhhhh. First comment I made. He ain’t slick. That’s why he cut that second out of the video. 😝
Oh mercy, that raw prime rib ( shudder). To each his own but ...no way!
I'm gonna be fat.
I would never be able to afford that, prime rib is fecking expensive, that piece would probably cost like 35-40 bucks
Also prime rib is meant to be eaten when it's medium-rare
As a native Angeleno living in Seattle, I miss these places. There is a site called Goldbelly’s that offers Langer’s pastrami. I’m very happy ordering it when the homesickness gets bad!!
that strawberry donut looks so good
Lockdown has Food Insider editing their old videos into new ones lol.
How is that double dipped wet when the top of the sandwich bread is still white and dry?
Um, good question
Sarah Kokopuffs, whatever it is, still really good
Beef, double dip; potato salad, lemonade ... my standard order, and it's DELICIOUS!! I can't wait until this dag gone COVID-19 is over with.
Because it doesn't soak all the way through.
The top of the sandwich have a layer of crust that form during baking.
Like Toast edge. It doesn't absorb the liquid because they only dunked it for less than 3 seconds. The middle part are soft and light, it absorb the liquid in 1 second.
Agreed on all these spots as a local LA guy. Bravo and well done.
Who is here after flight changed and is now one of the best youtubers and Akunmpo is now on the road to 1 milly milly😂
I like how they make sure each plate/dish is stuffed. If I get something like that in my country, the price would not be reasonable to the quantity given.
I love the French dip !
This was awesome! Born and raised in LA, I’ve only been to 2 of the 8 restaurant you featured! I’m honestly shocked and will have some driving (and eating )to do...regardless of these crazy Covid times.
That chocolate and ice cream shops look amazing.
14:50 Bombay Franky chef flashing gang affiliation
Bro, thats a bold statement, the best pastrami in america is here in NYC in katz deli
fr LA thinks that own everything when NYC is where it’s at😂
Yea I was looking for this comment. No one disses new York and gets away with it.
Katz is such a mess, just a tourist trap much better delis
@@chungusgaeming9306 Ive been living in nyc for the last 6 years bro and i have travel to los angeles and that pastrami sandwich is good but doesnt compare to katz, why u think is messy cause od customers go everyday before this pandemic started, imagine after the pandemic
Ryann Claytor NYC is overrated.
Lawry's looks amazing.
