Both Margit and the Tree Sentinel were specifically put in the early game to punish players not respecting the open world of Elden Ring and treating it as a linear game. Also as a challenge for pros. This is also why one of the hardest areas of the game (DragonBarrow and Caleid) is adjacent to the starting location. Its a way of showing the player that the game isnt going to hold your hand and its up to you to figure out how to best develop your character.

This is my first souls game besides bloodborne (which I don’t count because I quit within 10 minutes because it was too hard 😂) so I had a buddy help me with the Tree Sentinel and Margitt, then he told me, “just so you know, by asking me to do that, you just made the game a lot harder for yourself” and when I asked him to elaborate, he told me I’d know soon. I in fact knew what he meant within an hour. I tried exploring as if it were a linear game, but quickly had to turn and go back before I even made it through the castle! He told me to head toward the direction of Caelid, but the way he said it sounded suspicious to me, so I did not. Yeah idk what the devs were thinking because after grinding my way out of caelid I was way overleved for the actual area i was supposed to be and it had a snoball effect that kinda half ruined the game for me. The enemies were either beat yourself over the head with a stick hard or complete baby mode easy. I actually missed so many cool boss fights because i ended up killing them in 3 seconds and really regretting how easy it was to skip over vast amounts of content on accident because going back to do it later ruins it after leveling honestly.

Another tip that I haven't seen mentioned in a few videos that I'm sure newer players may not catch is Strength requirements. If you have a weapon that has a strength requirement of say 30, you can two-hand it at 20 strength (you only need 66% of the requirement if you two-hand it). The game gives you a message telling you that you can use it effectively two-handed but it can easily be missed if you're just spamming the confirm button. This only works with Strength, not Dexterity or any of the spell based stats.

the biggest tip i can give to a new player is: DON'T BE GREEDY
if a boss gave you an opnening to attack, attack once or twice, don't try to full combo them every opening because you will be punished.
also, another really important tip: DON'T BE AFRAID
if a boss is huge, then thats fine, come close to them, hug their feet and start attacking. If you create distance on big enemies your are giving them the chance to hit you while you can't hit them. They have more range, so you gotta play it close to them.
There's a saying in souls games that's "the difficulty of a boss is inversely proportional to their size", you should only fear enemies that are your size or slightly bigger, not the opposite.

2 Handing a single weapon is good, to a point. At early levels you're pressed for equip space so poise and weight have to be used more sparingly. 2 handing will allow you to not flinch as often and do a decent amount more damage with every attack. That however does not mean that 2 handing is a good damage tactic in the mid to late game. If you're a melee build and want damage, 2 handing isn't what you want, dual weilding is. Specificlally dual weilding 2 of the same category of weapon. This will change you left light attack button, to do a different string of attacks, that include both weapons. Effectively doubling your damage, instead of the 50% given from 2 handing. Although 1 attack from a 2 handed weapon does more poise damage, an attack with a dual weild attack, with both of them landing will do alot more. This is even more extreme with jump attacks.
Normally with jump attacks you have the option between a light and a strong jump attack, the strong being alot stronger and can stun enemies faster. With dual weidling you only get the option to strong attack, but with 2 weapons you deal just as much poise damage, but twice, while also doubling your damage. I've been 2 handing a collosal sword this entire game until i found out you can hold 2, and use them both together. At level 80 i was 2-4 shotting bosses, no MP required. And this got even more insane with the mimic, because the mimic will naturally prefer to use both at once, over just attack with the right hand. The only time i attack with only 1 sword now is to do the fast couch attack with the collosal sword
Granted you do miss out on some poise for yourself, and more importantly you lose the option to block, but damage and stun chance you get from dual weidling is so insanely high that it doesn't make sense for any non-magic build to not have 2 weapons going at once. Atleast have the option queued up behind your sheild for when damage is a go

    Nice guide, thanks!
A few key lessons you could also consider:
    1) Don't overload your character (max Med Load) or your rolls will be too slow in combat. Try it. Equip only what you need and consider armour decoration only.
    2) Don't carry runes into a site you are not prepared to lose. Spend it first: level up, buy stuff or upgrade weapons.
    3) Don't use the golden runes until you need to to afford something - this is a useful way to top up for something you need and get your runes balance low before combat.
    4) Find a rune farm you can jump to for little top-ups (like Lenne's Rise ball farm)
    5) Avoid night unless you need it to trigger a boos fight. Rest at Sources of Grace to wait for morning.
    6) If you are unfamiliar with fighting, 1) Learn how to lock on. 2) Practise skill moves, jump/rush/roll and charged attacks, 3) find a soldier you can kite away from the rest and practise with (like at Gatefront).
    7) A lot of buffs stack - so try to get your weapons, ashes, medallions, physics to buff the same thing - like a charged attack.

Great list! I think Number 10 is the one that stuck out the most strongly to me - whether for Elden Ring, or any other FromSoft title, you should play the game how you want in order to enjoy yourself. Especially for newer players, it's easy to get taken in by all the internet buzz about min-max builds, and seeing all the clips of FromSoft veterans or streamers perfectly i-framing their way through fights, and I think that contributes a lot to the "gamer pride" thing that keeps people from just backing down from a fight and going somewhere else in Elden Ring. Just play the game as you want in order to enjoy everything the game has to offer - overlevel, underlevel, stack vigor and poise to facetank enemies, or go light, learn the fights to a tee, and never get hit once - it's really all up to you, and you should do what you have to to enjoy this masterpiece of a game to its fullest. FromSoft games are *objectively* difficult relative to most games, so every approach is fair game.

i do this because i went through bloodborne completely blind on my first playthrough and i knew something was wrong when it took me 14 hours. didnt know that the upper cathedral ward, the old abandoned workshop, iosefkas clinic, the nightmare frontier, and cainhurst existed. outside of those areas, i didnt know that the cleric beast, paarl, and moon presence existed either.
i had sorta the same experience with ds1 playing through that blind (although not missing nearly as much), because of how non linear it is. was stuck in the catacombs for 5 hours. i miss way too much to play blind.

best weapon for my current build that I have and can use is the Meteorite Ore Katana, which unfortunately can't change its weapon art (and lets be honest, gravity moves kind suck, especially early/mid game). Definitely need to beat Rennala and get a respec in

@@TheCokee47 But it has something Moonveil doesn’t which is good Str scaling. Two hand it at 27 Str and you can hit like it’s 40 and easily fit it into a mage build. Gravity Well is also great utility to have on the weapon alongside the other spells a mage would have. It’s a sleeper hit tbh. I’ve been using it since I found it.

Hidden faint mechanic on certain weapons. To use, start a charged heavy attach then press the dodge button. Also don't roll through poison or what not, just sprint. If you roll you cover yourself and will continue to take damage even after leaving the poison or what not

As a guy that has never played any FromSoftware games before, I am in love with this game. I’m just at level 45. But I would definitely follow the tips here. This all checks out. Just starting head south and once you are capable of beating everything south pretty easily. Then go beat the castle boss. And use the soul summons, they make monster bears much easier.

If this is your first game then you need to know this: You saw a cool rare enemy with cool looking armor? Keep grinding him and with time his entire set including weapons and shields will drop for you. Every enemy's gear is something you can get with the exception of bosses. It takes time so use the silver talon thingy to boost your drop rate chance to spare you some trouble.
I mean c'mon, one needs to look badass while slaying monsters amirite?

My #1 tip for playing any Souls style game is: Use a controller with Back-Buttons/Paddles of some kind. Not having to fumble through item slots in a panic, Not having to take your thumbs off the sticks to Sprint or Roll, and also having 2 binds so you can sort of correct yourself when getting your timing down makes these games so much easier to get the hang of.

I love being able to explore and actually get away from most enemies when I need to, if I played it without farming I would rage quit. I’m not great at souls games (didn’t even know I was fatrolling until my friend told me) but the vastness of the world gives me less anxiety than knowing I can make it past these 3 mini bosses in a row by just running.
I’m also glad I can see all the other players who died so I don’t feel like I suck at the game. Boosts morale.

Seeing bloodstains makes me feel better knowing someone died on the first step. No idea how, but there are blood spots there. Also, make sure you talk to the girl in the red cloak at the storm shack north of gate front. She gives you a jellyfish spirit, it’s very tanky and helpful against margit and godrick.

Lol same. I found that two handing the broadsword and using the R2 arts (impale I think?) when there was an opening helped out a lot. It did a decent chunk of damage and left the boss open for a charged up R2 when he stumbled (couldn't figure out where his critical hit spot was). For the charging attack where he runs toward you and sweeps with the halberd, just a simple roll backward will make him miss and put you in a position to punish him for it.
      Hope this helps!
