A few years ago there was a story about a CEO who was fired because he, and this was the quote I read, "lacked intellectual leadership". And he couldn't have been THAT stupid because he walked off with a $26 million golden parachute.
The reason why they are giving Bill such a massive payout for firing him is because technically he hasn't been charged with anything yet therefore they cannot cite accusations from an ongoing investigation as a reason for his dismissal and because his current contract is not yet up (presumably) they are in effect buying him out of his contract.

+smcg I imagine they thought he was too powerful and had too much support from Fox News at the time to win their cases, so they may have decided it was more worth it to take the money and avoid being publicly harassed and humiliated by O'Reily and his supporters. It's only recently that people have taken the accusations against famous men like Cosby and Ailes and the like seriously and stood with the victims.

ArgonTheAware Daft Punk was forced to cancel by Viacom. Despite owning both networks, they wouldn't allow Daft Punk on Colbert Report because they were supposed to perform at the MTV Music Video Awards, and they wanted it to be exclusive.
And it certainly taught Daft Punk about dealing with Viacom, not to mess with "being exclusive" didn't it? Colbert got a lot more out of that video than they did from being on the VMA, especially since he was able to use appearances from Fallon, Rose, America's Got Talent and others to get much more exposure than they did

his audience is too old to follow him to a future online show, if he did a kick starter or youtube show or podcast etc. I think his average viewer is like late seventies or so. networks that 70 year olds could find probably won't hire him if even fox wouldn't keep him on and it cost them viewers and severance cash. there's too much competition in conservative radio and he tried that before, it got cancelled because it was scheduled the same time as another right wing radio show and didn't get much viewership, plus its harder to make money on terrestrial radio now. the most realistic path from what I hear is he will keep writing books that will be self published and continue living in comfort, but at least he won't have his own program again. maybe he will show up from time to time on conservative web shows?
