Karl Malone and John Stockton never won an NBA championship. Here's what left them empty-handed.

  • Karl Malone and John Stockton might just be the best duo in NBA history to fall short of winning it all. That might even extend to all major pro sports. They had all the stats and all the individual acclaim, and they had all that with a franchise that won consistently for almost two straight decades. This episode of Untitled examines why, despite a basically ideal situation, two of history’s greatest players couldn’t bring Utah even one NBA championship.
There isn’t one simple answer. From the late 1980s to the mid 1990s, Utah never made it out of the Western Conference playoffs for a rotating carousel of reasons: Sometimes it was failure in the clutch, sometimes it was an unstoppable opposing star like Hakeem Olajuwon, sometimes it was missing players in crucial moments. Sometimes it was all of the above.
In the late 1990s, the Jazz finally made a couple NBA Finals against Michael Jordan and the Jazz. They lost both, of course, but neither of those losses was a foregone conclusion. Both came down to little twists of fate and momentary greatness.
This is a heartbreaking tale; it’s year after year of “almost”. But gazing upon the sheer volume of that almost-perfection helps one appreciate how consistently great Stockton and Malone were ... even if they never achieved the ultimate reward for their collective greatness.

I think that their basic problem is that they just weren’t quite good enough. Most of the time they were good for about 55 wins and third to fifth rank in a very deep Western Conference, and while they theoretically could have broken through and won it one of those years, the odds weren’t in their favour. When they got up to 60 plus wins and became more of a true championship calibre team they fell to an historically great Bulls team, in back to back 6 game series.

    • @BOnYTB
      @BOnYTB Před 2 lety +1

I hope CP3 gets a ring, but I think the HOU injury was probably his best chance. Absolutely brutal one. Then to get to the finals with the Suns…just tough. They’re still good though and while they’re far from the favorite, he probably has two more outside chances at it if things fall their way and he stays healthy.
With regards to the current day Jazz…yea pretty much. Paying Gobert all of that money wasn’t necessary (I know how important he is, but they could’ve paid him a lot less and it still would’ve been by far the best deal on the table) and they’ve blown a couple chances at getting that real third star type unfortunately. At this point barring some insane luck it’ll be nearly impossible to get that 3rd guy, and some of the role players are starting to age out or will soon.
They don’t have their pick in the 2022 draft, but they have a MEM 2nd and then they’ll have their own 1st in ‘23. Maybe they can get lucky with a young guy or make the right trade with a future 1st and a package of a couple of their role players. As long as Donovan Mitchell is there and healthy they’ll have a chance at building a contender around him. I think he’s really special, and can improve even more. Probably not a T5 player in the league, but T15 (All-NBA) I can absolutely see.
I still remember being upset when DET drafted Kennard over Mitchell. I’m a Pistons fan, and don’t get me wrong…I had no idea Mitchell would become this good. But I knew he had a much higher ceiling, and as a team like the Pistons it’s better to take those home run swings on upside rather than take a guy like Kennard IMO.

Stockton is the most underrated Hall of Famer in history.
At best, people call him the greatest passer in history….which he is. However, a lot of people disagree with that FACT.
He is also a severely underrated scorer. That’s the case solely because he was the best team player in history too. Because of that, he followed every instruction his coach gave him…..which was, pass to Karl Malone.
Side note, the only reason he didn’t win a championship was…..Karl Malone (who was slightly overrated). Yes, he’s a HOFer. However, as this video laid out, he was also a terrible free throw shooter, and even more importantly, choked under pressure…especially in the playoffs.
Whenever Malone wasn’t looking at the underaged children in the crowd, he was a slightly overrated all-time great. (Sorry, but it has to be said whenever Malone’s name is mentioned).

Meanwhile they werent able to even extend either of those 2 finals series against the Bulls to 7 games, whereas Reggie Millers Pacers did so in the 1998 ECF 1 rd b4 the Bulls beat the Jazz in 6 games...The Knicks also managed to take the Bulls to a 7th game in 92...The issue with the Jazz was they werent ever that great, and by the time they were in the finals none of their best players were in their primes anymore at all.

@2:26 "Stockton became the fulltime point guard and the youngster led..."- John Stockton, my good sir, has in-fact never been a "youngster". John Stockton came out of his mother with full pit bush and a full man prairie on his chest. He then slapped the doctor and proceeded to flawlessly pass the bottle to the dumbfounded nurse who in turn filled it promptly. This was the first of many assists in his lifetime.

The NBA needs to get rid of that offseason awards show. We lose out on potential revenge series that way.

I mean CP3 could still win a championship if he leaves Phoenix in FA to go to the Lakers, Clippers, 76ers or Heat, he fits in great there. Hell, even possible if he decides to go to Denver. CP3, Murray, Aaron Gordon, MPJ, Jokic sounds like a terrifying starting 5. So much scoring and playmaking on that team. I'm not a Denver fan but I hope he goes there in FA and wins a chip with them. Phoenix is a young and talented team but CP3 is too old to be trying to win a championship with them when this will be their first playoff appearance since 2010. Time is ticking for him to get his ring.
