Allen Iverson never won an NBA championship. Here's what left him empty-handed.

- What stood in the way of Allen Iverson earning a ring? It’s tempting to simply say “practice,” but that oversimplifies all the factors that worked against Allen, and it sort of glosses over the fact that he was an incredible player. Sure, he’s got a reputation for skipping practices and going to practice only makes you better- but there was more that kept Iverson from hoisting the Larry O’Brien trophy.
In his prime, his gargantuan efforts to propel underdog teams through the playoffs on upsets came up short. He never seemed to have the right supporting cast around him. Even when the 76ers made trades to help him, Allen always ended up with the team on his slight shoulders.
When he was suddenly told he was past his prime, he refused to be a sub. You can’t just glom onto a team and chase a ring if you don’t come off the bench. He wanted a championship, but he wasn’t about to let somebody else win it for him.

He had help with the Nuggets. That team was one of the most fun teams to watch offensively. Had no D. He tried to take the back seat, he just never gave it time.
Pride did cost him a ring, though. Youre right.
Iverson was the problem, nothing they did worked because every decision ultimately depended on him.

Manu Ginobili, the man who lead Argentina to beat the team USA (with LeBron, AI, Stoudemire, Marion, and DWade) in 2004 agreed to come off the bench in his tenure as a Spur. Andre Iguodala agreed to come off the bench in the Warriors dynasty despite being a borderline all star since the beginning of the career, and won three rings. They have every right to be a starter, but the team always gets better once they put their ego away. Had AI done the same thing, he might win a ring

I was so happy for Larry Brown winning a championship with the Pistons (and not just because they beat L.A.). It's amazing he got Iverson as close to a ring as he did, and just look how that Pistons team lost all discipline and collapsed after he left. Very underrated coach.

I remember watching the press conference when AI was going back to Philly. He cried and was (I thought) humbled because no other team wanted him. He talked about all of the mistakes he made in the past. I was really rooting for him. Still can't believe he didn't even finish the season. Pride can be an ugly thing.

I love AI but he was his own biggest enemy. MJ was upset when Phil Jackson was brought in to replace Doug Collins because it meant implementing the triangle offense and eliminating iso ball. I'd say that worked out pretty well. Sometimes you have to put your ego aside for the sake of winning.
@Mitch Gill It was actually the Raptors who turned down the trade. The Sixers would've sent Larry Hughes and a 1st round pick in exchange for T-Mac, but it fell though. T-Mac wanted a team built around him, which is why he left Toronto for Orlando in the first place. A prime T-Mac and prime AI would've been a lethal duo, but would AI relinquish the ball handling? He didn't do it with Stackhouse and Hughes.

@Mitch Gill Yeah I agree. But it's a little but of both. He did have huge ego problems but not enough talent to make that irrelevant. Like Kobe and Shaq, Kobe hated that Shaq was lazy throughout their tenure. But he was dominant enough anyway that the result on the court silenced all of that. In Iverson's case, it's easy for us to see the talent around him and blame them for why he never won. But I bet there are former coaches and teammates who absolutely wondered how badly did he actually want it. It's tough as a player and as a man when you're showing up to practice and grinding everyday, and the guy that's supposed to lead you shows up whenever he wants. No matter how good that player is, that's always a bad trait for other teammates. And we all know since we were young that everyone hates the kid who gets away with doing things that you get punished for. It's a human trait, and happens in the NBA too. If a non superstar doesn't show up daily and work hard, they get benched or cut. If a superstar does the same thing they get away with it. I'm not saying it's unfair or anything, I'm just saying it absolutely rubs your coaches and teammates the wrong way when you act like a diva while they're fighting for their jobs everyday.
@Mitch Gill Jermaine O'Neal was a defensive player and teams always need those. And he came off the bench multiple times in his career. CP3 is a pass first PG and also a good defender, that runs your offense. AI was literally just a guy who scores. Teams wanted him, but they wanted to use his scoring skills off the bench and he said no. It's really that simple. But if you need to ask why CP3 is still starting at 34 but not AI at 34, then that tells me everything you know about basketball.

Chris Paul is a pass-first guard and he exhibits great leadership. He also shoots great jumpshots which makes him valuable in the modern NBA.
AI is a shoot-first guard, prioritized himself over his teammates and was never really a consistent jumpshooter. He was never fit to be a starter by the age of 34 if he wanted to ballhog because he had already lost the athleticism he had when he was younger and he never really had a consistent jumpshot.

Such a damn shame that the year he decides to retire, they set the winning streak record (33 games) and won their first LA title.
He technically got a ring for 1972 because he played a few games that season before his retirement. Because his overall contributions were weighted within the success of the whole team, the same as a 12th man's would be, he was awarded a ring as part of a championship team.

He was THE premier scoring and rebounding forward. AI was just an overbearing and cocky star. He was great but never great enough.

AI is my favorite player of all time. I'm from Philly. I truly have seen every triumph and every heartbreak this man went thru as a Sixer. He was amazing. It was gut wrenching to see him lose in the playoffs. His game 1 win vs the Lakers in the finals was a moment in time I'll never forget. 😢

Dude was trash. They literally lost the series because of him. Even in that first game, he shot 43 percent from the field and they won despite him.
Honestly, if you watched that game 1 and came out with any other take than "Allen Iverson almost lost them the game", you don't know anything about basketball

For sure. No superstar caliber player should be wanting to come off the bench, but telling teams you straight up won't do it when you haven't even proven you can be a productive piece for their team is not the way to go. A truly great player with the drive to win would come off the bench and prove why he deserved to still be a starter and earn the role. We all know AI was good enough to start for that Pistons team and especially that Grizzlies team, but you can't expect to show up in a brand new system and just take over when all the other guys on the roster have been there longer than you.
I don't think it was about being bigger than the team, at least in his mind. I think he's just the ultimate competitor. It's a mindset you might not understand. Iverson played thru and incredible amount of injuries. You can make the case these modern guys think they are bigger than the team cause they skip out on games for load management. It's all perspective

The ultimate competitor doesn't give up on his team in the games, though, and puts in all the work needed. Kobe, even when he wanted out of LA the most, never tried to stop winning games or quit practices or showed up 30 minutes before a pivotal playoff game. Granted, he was also never benched. It's a tough situation to analyze because we don't really have precedent of a superstar still in their prime coming off the bench (unless you count OKC Harden) or if you call Manu a superstar. It doesn't sit right with me that he gave up, but I also completely understand why he did.

Never wanted to come out of a game to give other guys playing time and when in Detroit he went on record saying he'd rather retire than come off the bench. The next day the pistons said Iverson was sidelined for the rest of the season due to "back spasms" even though fans and media knew that story was b.s.

Iverson was great and he knew it. He couldve been greater but he didnt want to, he already thought he was the greatest.
In his later years, could’ve been that generations Lou Williams. 6-man on a competitive team where he can chip in 16-24 points a game, but is behind a strong starting 5 that shares and moves the ball and allows him certain moments in the 4th because of the teams overall defence.
When Iverson was on, he was a monster scorer, but was never going to win a championship playing his way. He was a wildly inn efficient scorer, that never had great pieces in his later years in Philly as a point guard.
His off the court antics were so ridiculous and for a guy that spent time in prison, you’d think he would’ve been so humble and worked with whatever coach and gm he had to make sure his team won. But he didn’t. He had a massive ego compared to someone like Kobe or Jordan who were incredible scorers but played within a system and held themselves accountable, while playing incredible defence. Iverson didn’t do those things, and while his stats can influence on the game may be HOF worthy. I think Iverson the teammate and guy is not.
both MJ and Kobe were originally arrogant and prideful too. But MJ learned he couldn't do it by himself and playing the way he thought was the best when he got trounced by Detroit. Kobe learned that during the Smush/Kwame years. AI never learned. Great player to watch but hard to cheer for. In today's NBA Westbrook is very similar unfortunately. Fantastic to watch, gives 105% effort every game but stubborn to the point of detriment
If there's one thing to be learned from the NBA Untitled episodes, it is this: Robert Horry does not mess about in the playoffs. Definition of a team player and he's got seven rings to show for it.

Iverson was not a leader of men. He missed practice and didnt form relationships with the team. That caused them to resent him behind his back. In turn he decided to take more shots and not trust his team. Had he went to practice, he could have inspired those guys to be great.
That wasn't his mindset tho. We saw it very recently with Antonio Brown. Undeniably talented, but not suited to be the focal point of a team.

He just needed an actual team and to actually listen to his coach. I felt that if Iverson had simply obeyed his coach more often and started playing as a team player, he would've won at least one ring.
He had an actual team or teams for a matter of fact. Philly had done everything to give him what he wants. He had a chance to play with Webber, Melo, and Larry Brown. His attitude and selfishness are his only weakness.
Fair assessment except that he was provided with actual teams that had to cater to his play and demands.
CyberAMES Webber wasn’t in his prime when he played for Philly; Melo and AI’s team had no defenders other than Marcus Camby; and Larry Brown didn’t have two great big men like Ben Wallace and Sheed. He just had Mutombo...
If you see on the video... how he is behaving and the way he talk and the way he response to others suggestion... its not about the team but its about attitude and comitment.

If he had a mature attitude, he might have been in the league longer and probably retired around the time Kobe did. His play might also have improved too but its all what ifs now.
I feel like that 2001 Philly team was almost tailor made for AI. It was literally him and a bunch of guys who picked up the slack for him. And it worked.
But that style will only get you so far. They ran into the Lakers.
That team wasn't built to succeed in the finals.
Exactly right. It was more like a double edged sword with A.I. That team was built particularly for him to play his game. But you’re not gonna win a championship that way. He’s still an All Time Great, but his biggest problem was that he didn’t know how or even wanted to learn how to conform.
I wouldn't blame Iverson for that 01 loss. That Lakers team was UNDEFEATED that year in the Playoffs and Iverson gave them their only loss. When's the last time u remember a team having a playoff run like those Lakers? Any team who went up against that Lakers team would've lost they were basically a cheat code. Sixers just got unlucky they had to face a team so powerful. That was their year but damn the Lakers they just had too much

Theo Ratliff's career-altering(and by altering i mean ending) injury is why the sixers fizzled out in the 2000s. Ratliff had intangibles that fit iverson perfectly, the 76ers were beating elite teams in 2000-2001 with Ratliff at center because of Ratliff's quickness, athleticism, mobility and energy. Mutumbo was a short-term fix but long-term failure.

His ego was built to be the primary option, but his stature was not (not w/ decent efficiency anyways). Jordan was a gunner too, but did it on good efficiency.

He’s the kid when you’re playing pickup who is the best pure scorer out there, but whose team always loses because he takes every shot and doesn’t know how to help teammates score when he’s out there getting tripled up. With less pride and more willingness to listen and learn, he could have played his whole career in Philly and won multiple rings.
A.I's assist numbers actually went up in the second half of his career. In Philly he was the main offensive option which is why he maybe didn't pass as much as he should've

Allen Iverson didn't like coaching, direction, and was undisciplined at times. Along with his selfish attitude hindered his chances at winning an NBA title. These were some of the factors that contributed to his demise as a player and shortened the possibility of more longevity in his NBA career.
