MAGIC ∩ PENNY: When a legend returned to face his successor ... and helped take Shaq from him
Vložit

- Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway comes from a whole different era than Magic Johnson. He’s a product of the ‘90s, with a legacy colored by those of his greatest teammate, Shaquille O’Neal, his greatest playoff rival, Michael Jordan, and many others who shared the court with him. Not so much Magic Johnson.
In fact, Penny entered the NBA billed as “the next Magic.” Johnson had spent the ‘80s defining an exceptional legacy: A big, powerful player who played point guard, the position traditionally reserved for the smallest player on the floor. As a 6’9” ball-handler and passer, Johnson won a stack of championships and individual accolades, and did so with panache.
By the early 1990s, when Hardaway came to the league, Johnson had retired to manage his stunning HIV diagnosis. So Penny - himself the size of a forward, but nimble and creative like a point guard - seemed poised as anyone to carry the torch for this positional anomaly. Getting drafted by the Orlando Magic, who already had Shaq to play Kareem to Penny’s Magic (and, yes, a fitting team name), gave Hardaway an even better chance of dazzling the ‘90s the way Johnson had his own, distinct era.
But then the eras overlapped! In 1996, Magic Johnson returned to play a handful of games with the Lakers, two of them against Orlando. Episode 1 is about the build-up that made those games fascinating, the mood in and around that intersection of legacies, and at least one extremely important product of the meeting.

Wow they just mentioned this a couple hours ago and already have it out? This is why we love you guys. Yall are what ESPN is supposed to be
There was a trailer for it last week that said it debuts today
They’ve probably had it in the works for weeks
I agree 💯💯💯
Lol "ESPN has been driving around downtown frantically texting SB Nation asking for their employees resumes."
Secret Base definitely works quick like you mentioned. Also, didn't this channel JUST come out and it already has almost 1 million subscribers?!? That's such as testament to the quality of videos SB makes and how loyal their fanbase is. All of it is well deserved.
Edit: nevermind this is just a renamed SB Nation. My dumbass thought it was a brand new channel. That was far from right lol.
TheHumbleNarcissist this channel has been around for 8 years they just changed the name lol
A wise man once said: "Magic Jonhson stole the best name ever for a pornstar."
Lmao 😂 😂 😂 😂
😂🤣😂🤣😂 Aye, he did Magic in those days in the bedrooms too
I miss Penny and wish he could have been healthy for his whole career

@@JameAndy-be1pv We all do. He had everything to be the next great thing. But the injury were out of his control.
The story of Shaq and Penny is always so sad...so much "What if...???"
-What if Shaq stayed?
-What if Penny stayed healthy?
-What if Nick Anderson makes those free throws?
Crazy questions we wouldn't have Kobe be who was to us today and the whole NBA would look different lol crazy to think
Also a major WHAT IF...what if ORL didn't lowball Shaq with that contract offer which Shaq took as disrespect after how much they gave Penny? Even if Nick makes those free throws, they only win 1 game & still lose Finals.
As somebody who is born in 1980 in Orlando and lived there until 2014 I have to admit those questions still run through my head today... Frequently
The weakest link on the team was Nick Anderson, he was exactly what John Starks was for the Knicks, both missing a ton of shots when it matter the most in the playoffs and letting their teams down many, many times. I remember that like today, They were not built for the biggest stage whatsoever.
@@JECZ23 Hellya Htown stand up!!!
Penny's career being derailed by injuries is a tragedy. That guy was so good, and getting better before the injuries hit. It's a shame that he's just a footnote in NBA history now.
He was great. Too bad for him it didn’t last.
And as a big Memphis fan, I can assure you Penny is still beloved in his hometown!
He’s currently coaching U of Memphis’ basketball team, and killing it. Not to mention activism of his own.
We’ll always love him!
i remember watching a documentary of him taking over his friend's coaching job because his friend was violently ill and asked Penny to take over for him.
I miss Penny and wish he could have been healthy for his whole career
players like him such as Brandon roy, T Mac, Yao Ming, Grant Hill and D Rose make me sad. They did so much in so little time due to injuries, but I still wonder what they couldve achieved if they stayed healthy
@@kevinzhu6417 Indeed, sadly
Thinking about Yao makes me sad. I lived in Hong Kong with my fam for a long time and when he was rolling, everyone was having fun.
Chinese government drove his body into the ground playing for the national team and never giving him time off
I do as well, even though I don't think he would've put up Magic Johnson-like assist numbers (also less turnovers, though Magic more than made up for those:-). I believe Penny Hardaway was more of a pure scorer (like what Magic said) who could see the floor, but set up guys more from them being wide open due to being such a matchup nightmare himself (I see Derrick Rose & him actually having more similarities in play style). What I feel that these two had most in common was that they both could play multiple positions on the floor (Penny at center like Magic? No, probably not going to happen, but Hardaway could likely go anywhere from point to stretch 4, if in his time the NBA game played that way) and could be classified as "position-less" players, like Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Larry Bird, LeBron James, and Kevin Durant.
Same.
When the whole Secret Base thing came up, I was shocked to realize you guys have less than a million subs. SBNation always felt like a bigger presence in the media world. Keep up the great work. Your content is on a level of it's own.
They get on the trending page a lot.
As a 90's baby, I can confirm. Lil' Penny was the coolest f$*kin thing at the time.

Healthy Penny was scary good .
Even Jordan gave him praise . His injuries robbed him and us . I'm glad he is not forgotten and I enjoyed this .👏👏👏👏👏
Jordan even wore Penny's sneaker. Something he didnt do for anybody. He even told his idol Dr. J that Penny and Grant Hill were going to take the mantle that he took from the Dr.
Magic means EXCELLENCE ... man won championships at EVERY leveland was a leader... he won a High School State Title, National NCAA Title, 5x NBA Champion, and Plympic Gold Medalist... and his style was just AMAZING 👏🏿 👑 My favorite player!
Magic led the Lakers in scoring 3 times and had a career avg of nearly 20 ppg. Led the league in steals multiple times all while averaging more assists per game than anyone in the history of the game. 🐐
Magic Johnson will always be my favorite NBA player ever and my lifetime hero
💯🐐
💯 Bro. The flair, creativity, teamwork, leadership.
When I was a kid Anferne Penny Hardaway was my favorite player, Shaq favorite center and Orlando Magic my favorite Team. For a kid from Slovenija watching NBA was amazing experience. We are small cuntry and basketball was our favorite national sport. We had many good player for 2 million population, many played in nba like Brezec, Nesterović, Dragič, and now we even have super star in Luka Doncic. Anyway Penny and Shaq were amazing and if not for injuries he would have great carrer.
YESS when they first teased this I was excited as hell and this didn’t disappoint

@Miles Profitlio Now that’s a video I’d love to see!
You know Rickey actually volunteered to sit out with 2,999 hits cause he didn’t wanna distract the occasion of it being Tony's last day.
Tony said he'd kick Rickey's butt out onto the field if he didn’t get out there 😂

Lil Penny was hilarious 🤣 "That was Tyra Banks fool"
Penny losing his superstardom to injury was way more hurtful to me as a magic fan than Shaq leaving
i haven’t kept up with the nba, but I was obsessed with penny in the 90s. I’m still and orlando fan today
Penny was the lebron of the 90s, that guy was special.
Hey this video kinda seems like it would be made by this one channel I knew called SB Nation
You might be in to something here...
Right? Wonder what ever happened to those folks
@Logan Knox Heard they went into some Secret Base or something?
It's the same channel. SB stands for Secret Base.
Lionel Loggin whoosh
Penny hardaway was so special!! He undoubtably was on his way to be a ultra superstar unfortunately injuries really robbed us and him from his greatness
I’m trying to become an actor and I don’t think you guys realize how much you’ve influenced me the last few years. Acting is all about studying human beings and why they make the choices they make, and this channel really goes in depth into what these athletes were thinking. Brilliant, brilliant work.
Good luck Bro
I'd love to see an OverLap for some of the pitchers who pitched to MJ or Tebow, especially those who went on to make a name for themselves in the Major Leagues
Terry Francona was coach of that minor league team MJ played for, and he went on to win the Red Sox a world series or two.
box from wherever he became one of the best managers of all time
I doubt there are any in game pitchers that pitched to both Jordan and Tebow. Too many years in between.
LaDainian Tomlison and Adrian Peterson should get an over lap. Only played one game against each other, LaDainian won the rushing title that year, but Adrian Peterson took something more special that day.
Edit: Just checked and they did play in 2010, but 2007 is the best game of the matchup.
I’m seeing history
You are the product of the history of you and your mother shared.
Those Little Penny commercials were the entire reason I became not only a Penny fan, but an Orlando fan.
Guy Lafleur, arguably the greatest Montreal Canadien of all time, and Mats Sundin, arguably the greatest Toronto Maple Leaf of all time, played on the same team together for one season... on the Quebec Nordiques. Now that’s an overlap.
Penny Hardaway was a legend in the making. Very sad that we never could experience his greatness. Still, he was inspirational for a those who were blessed to have seen him play.
Penny had Magic's court vision with Jordan's athleticism.
Jordan scoring to wit the slashing and post game and pull up jumper
Magic Johnson hyped up everyone lol good guy
I can only imagine Hardaway's impact on the future of the game had he stayed healthy
(Or how Shaq left for the Lakers.) 🤔
Hardaway had a very strong impact because he had plenty of good years before the injuries. That what if, waa more about if he could've done something on a championship team.
rash b he had 3 years healthy dummy😂
@@rashb3994 only a few good seasons playing with Shaq
@@TheSands83 Hey genius, the name of the game is impact. He was the biggest thing back then, he went to the Finals, had the commercials, carried the league when Jordan was out, beat him when he first came back, influenced plenty of players. Lol, silly millenials who weren't even past childhood during the time commenting like they know. His prime wasn't going to be much different, its more about what team would have helped. He played okay in in Phoenix hus post injury prime.
Feeling like a secret agent in secret base..... GOAT channel renamed
The wraparound to back hand killed me. Ive always loved Penny’s game
People don't understand how great Penny Hardaway was, before injury. Sad but he ranks in my top 5 PG.

I remember Penny being my favorite player and the reason I was an Orlando Magic fan as a kid.
15:25 Shaq has said he wore 33 in High School and College for Patrick Ewing not Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
I always wore 33 when I played because I liked Kareem and Ewing but didn't even know Shaq wore it in HS, now I like having it even more
They often get the facts wrong in these videos.
They didn’t say Kareem was the reason he wore jersey. They just said he liked him and that he wore his number
They didn't say he did though. They connected the Magic quote to Shaq's wearing of the same number as Kareem. Ill give that it might be potentially misleading if you aren't aware to the Ewing situation, but they never said he wore it for Kareem or anyone else.
bojo perez def not what the video says lmao
I was young at the time, but living in Florida when Orlando had Penny and Shaq was exciting. A Magic starter jacket was standard middle school attire 👌🏻

Great first video in this series. Your music choice, is, as ever, sublime. It really pulled me in to the story you were telling.
Magic playing vs the Magic. Greatest Overlap ever!!!
Penny Hardaway was one my favorite players.
You guys should make one of these on Wayne Gretzky and Gordie Howe both playing in the 1980 Allstar game
This comment doesn’t have enough likes
I also want to signal-boost this comment. The 1980 NHL All-Star Game is pretty well-known among hockey fans, but probably less so among general sports fans, and it's a really cool story.
Also, before entering the NHL, Gretzky's first full year as a pro was in the WHA's final season. Howe also played in the WHA, and their teams met in the 1979 WHA Semis, which ended up going a full seven games.
If you guys end up doing another collapse, could you do a collapse of the 2017 Jacksonville "Sacksonville" Jaguars, from a hopeful contender to a tank job

Every time a Penny nostalgia comes up,we're reminded of the what-ifs.
Penny and Grant Hill...
TMac and Hill were on the Magic, they were supposed to be the next great duo. And Tim Duncan almost joined them in Orlando, that would have been the first modern super team with 3 young stars joining up in their primes.
Penny would be so cold in today's NBA. He's literally a perfect PG for 2020 basketball.
For the Jordan ∩ Kobe Overlap, could that be next year, please.
It's been seven months and I still cry when I see Kobe in a video.
"Not only is he quick, but he's fast too" - There's some John Madden level basketball analysis for ya haha

Penny's one of my favorites ever. A pioneer for the big man who one day could run the ball up the floor. 1 cent!
Pioneer ? Magic was doing that 15 years before.
I have always looked at penny and thought he is 90s basketball version of Derrick Rose he's a great player that everyone rooted for no matter what team you liked and had to watch his career get destroyed by injury

The two hockey GOATs (Gordie Howe and Wayne Gretzky) were both in the NHL for 1 season: 1979-1980. A 51 year old Howe faced a 19 year old Gretzky 4 times that season.

I love it when Seth does the "players do crazy things" asides. The Ceballos Water Ski Trip reference was hilarious.
Penny was my favorite player, I loved him at the 1, I think moving to 2 and bulking up was not the natural course of things and probably helped wreck his knees. I appreciate the content keep it up.
I was wondering where I knew the name Scott Skiles from. Then I realized he was that little guy that Shaq punched in that other Secret Base video.
He was also the Bulls coach in the Bulls-Wizards Arenas rewinder
He also still til this day holds the most assist in one game record with a whopping 30.
Penny was my favorite player growing up. The Magic by far my fav team. Shaq leaving for LA & Penny slowly dwindling from injuries & getting traded was so painful i stopped watching the NBA for a season.
I didn't know I needed a video about basketball with set notation in the title this badly but here we are

The greatest line from this whole video has to be “he’s not only quick he’s fast too”
Talking about a car, that would make perfect sense (in the jargon of the auto industry, a "quick" car accelerates well, while a "fast" car has a high top speed). Maybe he meant something similar.
He might mean quick as in clever
Because there is a difference
I loved the length of this video. In depth, talking about the game a lot. Made my day

Imagine the if Magic would've played 1 more season he could've played w rookie Kobe.
"Not only is he quick but he is fast too"
I would argue those are different, but yeah its pretty funny
Acceleration vs top speed
Quickness comes in things like direction changes and footwork, reaction time, etc. Speed is covering ground, moving up and down the court.
Mike Farron That’s what I was referring to too
