I’m also incredibly grateful that books are published now with so much great representation. Part of why I love reading YA, MG, and children’s books as an adult is seeing the books I wish were around when I was younger. There is so much to learn by reading diversely.
this was specifically and intentionally a 2020 releases 5-star predictions 💕 I also made a few videos at the beginning of the year about backlist books I was looking forward to. ☺️
WHY IS EVERYTHING SO WHITE?? No really, both the library and the TBR shelves only have white spines on them. Should we expect a new bookshelf reorganization video?
I’m thinking she’s maybe playing around with pulling her Instagram aesthetics into her videos? The last 3 or so videos, she starts in front of white spined books
Where do you put your other books when you change your shelves. Are they hidden in your closet? Double stacked on the living room shelves? Is Liam's room just a book storage area now? 😂 Just curious.
I'm confused as to why the tbr shelf is entirely white books. Wait, is that still your tbr shelf? Are you reading by colour now or is this a temporary reorganization (for the ~aesthetic~)?
I think that nowadays Kayla moves all of her white books with each clip she films so they can be in the background for the aestethic 🙃 which if it's the case, is true dedication
I only read Elatsoe - it wasn't even on my radar - because of you "overhyping" it, so thanks for your energy and love! It was a one-sitting read for me.
I feel like my reading taste has changed so much this year as well. I felt similarly when I read Horrid. As my reading taste changes I do find it hard not to pick up books I know I would have loved a year ago. Hope you feel better soon ❤️
30 year old reader of Horrid here too! I gave it 5 stars, because even though I guess the twists, the writing and atmosphere was superb! It made me feel things. So I can def see where you got the 3 stars. And why you’re still going to rec it to others. ♥️
I just finished Horrid last weekend and it MESSED me up in the best way possible. So excited to see where Katrina Leno goes from here. Completely agree that the less you know going into this one, the better!

I've been making my way through the Wayward Children series and I LOVE Jack and Jill!
@@lisasmoot314 in this video she just mentioned a few times how things have changed a lot within this year. So I guess an update on that video is what I meant since that’s a bit older at this point
The first Wayward Children book will always hold the number one spot for me. As someone who's ace, Nancy is the first character I've ever read that has really delivered that representation for me. But then Book 4 is my next favourite hands down. I by no means disliked the other books, but In An Absent Dream just really stands out as an amazing story with such interesting discussions and commentary. I was entranced by this world of fair value and the discussions it wrought.
So glad you loved Elatsoe and Miss Meteor haha i was scared before watching your vid! I think the same thing for Miss Meteor, I loved it so much, but feel I would have loved it even more as a teen as it's well a very high school setting. Elatsoe was just out there!
I’m so glad (it seems) you’ve been feeling better overall and have been posting content again. I know the world is terrible and it’s been weighing heavily on you, and I’m sure still is, but I just wanted to thank you for still making content.
I seem to only like every other book in the wayward children series? So book 2 and 4 are my favorites, holding out for book number 6 to see if my prediction is right!
Dark and Deepest Red was the first Anna-Marie McLemore book that I read and I LOVED it, but then as I read more of their books, I felt like I was seeing the same type of story. I wonder if maybe the first ones that you read end up being your favorites because it’s a new and exciting style? Very interesting to think about!
Interesting observation about the Wayward Children fans.. I personally LOVED Book 4 the most, Book 2 was my second favorite. I did not care for books 1, 3, or 5. I think I probably will enjoy the books set in the portal worlds more than the ones primarily set in the real world.
I loved book 1, 2 and 4. 3 was fine but my least fav has been book 5. Seems I'm definitely in the minority as I dont follow either pattern. I didnt like the body swapping in bk 5. I will of course be reading book 6. I definitely agree the series is better as a whole then any individual book
Does your secret tbr of the month have anything to do white books ? I noticed both of your bookshelves are white. Are you just living your true aesthetic ??
Loved Elatsoe, hands down favorite book of all time. The June Boys....I read it 4 months ago and am still trying to figure out if I liked it or not. There word some aspects I didn't like but over all I don't think the book was too bad?...still thinking on that one
Kayla, I've finally defined your reading tastes. You are... A HIPSTER! Just because your reading tastes usually go against the grain the you have wide differing opinions 😊.
Love Book 2 and Book 5 the most! The audio of Book 2 is excellent because Seanan reads it. So moody and lush; The Moors is my favorite world so far. But I will say, I adore all the books so very much.
Book 4 of the Wayward Children series is my favorite! But book 2 is my second favorite. I’m thinking it’s because I’m enjoying the origin stories more than the others. 🤷♀️
I still haven’t read Come Tumbling Down, which is crazy because I always preorder the books and read them right away. Don’t know what’s up with my 2020 reading
Your theory on the Wayward Children was scarily correct. I loved book 4. But also my least fav so far was book 3. But you’re correct in assuming 2 & 5 weren’t my favs
Plot twist : to me the 2nd book of the wayward children is the best, the 4th book is my second favorite and book 5 is my 3rd favorite 🤪 I’m in desperate need of Christopher’s story
So far the only wayward children book I didn’t care for was Beneath a Sugar Sky. I think I gave it 3 stars while the rest were 5. I haven’t read Come Tumbling Down yet, but I really like Jack and Jill as well so I’m expecting to enjoy it.
Question about Burn Our Bodies Down for those who've read it! I started the first like chapter and a half and, as someone who grew up with an emotionally abusive/manipulative parent, I found it super triggering and had to instantly put it down. Does it stay in that place or will it change if I plow through a bit?
I don't know if you like it but maybe you'll check out An absolutely remarkable thing by Hank Green. It's a little weird and had an "unlikeble" female protagonist. Maybe you'll enjoy it!
I'm 100% team book 2 and 5 when it comes to the Wayward Children. I feel kind of disconnected from the other characters beside Jack and Jill. And that other mermaid blue haired girl, but I can't recall her name.
Is "Rules for Vanishing" on your radar? It hits a lot of points for things you love in books: dark game, friendship group, finding out the truth a year later, isolation, repeating experience, unreliable narrator
I think I saw this book in the video where she was reading books from videos she a scrapped. She didn’t end up reading it but she definitely has it on her radar.
I don’t think you should be feel bad about not liking a book you were sent. That’s the whole purpose of reviews! Plus, you’re extremely grateful and respectful so I’m sure that’s always appreciated.
I like extremely detailed synopsis. The more detailed, the better I can determine if I am going to like the book. There have been so many times I bought and read a book and I was super disappointed because I am just not interested in the story and a more accurate or straight forward synopsis would have saved me time and money.
When We Were Magic! I want to love Sarah Gailey but their books keep being misses for me! I was into that book for a while and then felt annoyed (at the same feeling of attempted humour!) I think this is one of those "for teens" YA for sure.
Haven’t finished the video yet, but that’s so interesting what you said about The Wayward Children series. I am definitely in the “Book 4 is the best and am not such a fan of 2&5” camp. Whoa! I wonder why that is??
I am literally the same! Lundy's story straight up sent me to another world. I was so immersed, and I rarely ever feel that way about YA books. I liked liked book 2 (but nowhere near as much as book 4), but I did not like 5 much at all. I think a good ranking would be 4, 2, 3 (but in reality, 2 and 3 are SO CLOSE for me), 1, 5.
Kayla, I know you don't like series, but if you want YA with meaning, read The Diviners by Libba Bray. It's about government corruption, eugenics, race relations, worker relations, medical abuse, child abuse, sexual abuse, abusive underage marriages, American exceptionalism and the failure of the American Dream. And it's about young people being revolutionaries, and marginalised people banding together in solidarity. It deliberately draws parallels between the racism and discrimination of the 1920s, and the racism and discrimination of the modern day. It's absolutely stunning and I will recommend it to everyone until the day I die.
@@BooksandLala I usually tell people it takes until the second book to prove how great it is. The first book is good enough, but the second blows everything wide open. But I totally respect if you don't want to continue.

Lala's video: 30 minutes of 5 star predictions update
The entire comments section: your white tbr shelf in the background!
And now we know why
*conspiracy theory
Kayla is not liking nor replying to the "Why is your TBR shelf all white?" question...
🤔🤔🤔

@@LauraLittlePony I didn't even notice that
HmmmmmmmmmMmMmmMm
Is kayla getting her own secret TBR hunters now? Because I would love that.
I think it is true. When Kayla talks about a book we all get hyped up to read it. Maybe because we love your videos.
Elatsoe was added to Time’s 100 best Fantasy books!!!!
Should Lala start reading more vampire-books, considering she gave two of them on this list 5 stars?🤔
she liked them because they werent the main focus
