i’m obsessed with kayla doing challenges and then “hating” herself for it😂😂
strange the reader oh hey I know you! I watch your videos! 🤗
kayla, in the softest voice ever after having spoken in the softest voice for the entire video: "i'm sorry, have i been yelling?"
My hearing was really off that day, I wish I could have re-recorded that entire reaction portion tbh 😔
BooksandLala still loved the reaction! Loved the whole video actually. I feel like I need to read all of you challenge video books now.
My first thought was that Kayla probably would have fixed it in editing even if she were.
Honestly, I never get why people say “well of course you don’t like that book you never like anything in that genre/ a book with that trope in it”. That’s so dumb. Every book is its own thing. I usually don’t like adult romance but I personally really enjoyed Red White and Royal Blue. Same with thrillers, I usually don’t like them but I keep picking them up because I’ve found some that blow me out of the water. Also tastes change. I used to not like adult fantasy and I’m getting more and more into them as we speak. People who don’t read an entire genre because they didn’t like one book from within that genre are missing out on so much. I just don’t get it.
Jelke Lenaerts I get what you saying but for me I don’t like non-fiction, it’s just not for me even if I just read one book and didn’t like it, I know this sounds dumb but I just know that it’s not just my kind of book.
Brooke Ammerman but I think non-fiction is different than just saying I don’t like all fantasies just because I disliked one. I was more talking about genres within fiction. There’s a lot of people who don’t like reading non-fiction because for example they read for escapism and non-fiction doesn’t give them that.
Jelke Lenaerts I understand, I tried a couple thrillers a couple years ago and didn’t like them, but I’ve given them another chance this year and I’m really enjoying them!
I love hearing booktubers change their mind about a genre, or hear exceptions to their dislike of the genre. Also yes! Tastes change! New books come out! Your comment is everything I think but way more eloquent.
I absolutely agree. I would include nonfiction in the arguement, though. I used to avidly avoid nonfiction, but then I read "Into Thin Air" by John Krakuaer. Now I'm on the hunt for another good nonfiction. I think it's good to keep your options open!
*"No more reader shame in 2020"* love this
You should read youtubers worst books of 2019
That sounds torturous 😆😆😆
But wait...maybe they'd end up being my favourites
INTERESTING
@@BooksandLala PLEASE DO IT!
BooksandLala that’s be so interesting though!
Maybe from booktubers she has the least in common with?
Yeah basically do the same thing you did in this vid but instead of picking booktubers that have similar tastes, pick someone who’s opposite and read what they hated
“you’ve all told me to read imaginary friend but it’s so long” she says after reading It the last week of December 😂
I set a goal to read shorter books and then somehow in the past month I've read 3 books over 700 pages. Like what am I doing with my life 🤣
almost an hour of content..... [gently pushes aside her lectures readings]
Same. I have an assignment due at midnight and haven't started it yet, but this is so much more important.
Me: Can't watch or concentrate in movie or even a TV show sometimes.
*Kayla's 58min reading vlog* exists
Me: I'M WATCHING THIS NOW
Morgana Rosana GIRL SAME
💯
I hate that I didn’t realize how long this was till I was to invested
The kombucha girl “well” after saying you weren’t dead inside got me 😂😂
"I don't HATE romance, I'm not that dead inside-Well..."
I cracked up way more than I should. Same girl, same. 🤣
I'm obsessed with your content and amazed by the time and effort you put into your channel. You're doing great! 💕
Honestly that was such a mood.
Yeah, I do hate romance lol
FUN VIDEO IDEA: collab with Ariel, where you pick books for other person to read which you expect them to like, and then have a discussion video about said books.
So sort of "Friend Decides My TBR"
I think it's good to read things you're not sure you'll like tbh! Sometimes they can surprise you, and also i think it's good to challenge yourself. Otherwise you'll be stuck reading the same things over and over again!
Books of Amber I totally agree! That’s what I’m trying to do in 2020
im still waiting for the *if you didn’t like this don’t f*cking read this* video
Yeeeeeeees
even if you don’t end up loving certain books, i really appreciate your thought process over why that is and what you *do* like. it really encourages me to be more honest and analyze my own reading patterns 💗
Kayla - "I want to narrow down what I like in adult books"
Also Kayla - "I liked romance in Little Women but not in this so who am I, what am I doing, I dont know".
The One sounds like an episode of Black Mirror on Netflix.
That really is my brand lately. Books that sound like they could be a Black Mirror Episode. 🙌
BooksandLala new video idea 💡
That's the kind of thing I'm looking for nowadays too!
It exists!
"Hang The DJ" Season 4 Episode 4
I just read that it is going to be a Netflix series soon
Liam in the corner reading in a reading vlog is one of the cutest moments i have seen ever!
"I don't HATE romance. I'm not that dead inside... well..." is the most relatable thing I've heard recently.
LexReads I laughed so hard.
KAYLA 🥰😭 this went pretty much exactly how I expected it to and I love it a lot lmao
Ahhhh this is so so so exciting!! Seeing you react to all my favorites of the year just made my whole year hahaha 😅 I’m sooo glad you loved The One! It’s so freaking cool, and I swear you would also love The Passengers by John Marrs too! His writing is just so clever and I love the way he blends the thriller genre with sci-fi! Love this video and as always I respect the hell out of your commitment to being able to read all the things. I actually attempted to make a video like this myself this month and I couldn’t follow through with it so kudos to you!! 🥰🥳😘 I love that you read things that are out of your comfort zone that you wouldn’t usually picks up for videos like this!
I also gave Baby Teeth one star, it really was not my jam! 😬 And I also didn’t like The Flatshare, the writing style was too strange for me to get into and I didn’t care about either of the characters, those were both two of my least favorites from last year! 😬
I love how every video everyone is like: "I read this because of Kayla". Inception. Also, I like romance and didn't love these two either...
58 minutes? Let me get comfortable.
Nope. Not skipping. NEVER skipping. I want all 58 minutes of this. Yaassss please. Thank you
Haha I just know the reactions can be dull for a lot of people! Especially this time the sound isn't great, the timing and editing is a little weird because I was actually watching on 2x speed, but didn't want you to have to watch on that speed, so I just wanted to give permission to skip over the worst part of the vlog. 🙈 Thanks for watching friend!
I've only read the title and am already obsessed with this vid
I LOVE that you pick things up out of your comfort zone, but you never trash it. You are so valid to not like certain things in books and explain so well why it just didn’t work for you. The exact same thing happened to me when I picked up Middlegame as your favorite book from 2019 when I did this same kind of video. I can totally see why you loved it, but sci-fi is just not my genre. Keep reading what you want to read 👏🏻
"No more reader shame in 2020" - So valid and I stand behind you on that!
I was VERY hesitant to read Scythe, but damn did it surprise me. It's well written and does a lot with the premise. It's also chalk full of twists.
One of my favorite book series!
I love grim reaper books but this one had flying through cause of all the twists and turns. The characters are so good and i love the world
I really enjoyed scythe and thunder head but I didn’t enjoy the toll very much.
I think you enjoy stories with romance thrown in, but dislike books where the plot is romance centered.
Exactly this 👆 Not a lot of people really talk about the specifics of this (because it's not a thing I'm sure most people care about lol) in book reviews so it's hard to know which ones I'll actually be into
@hannahheartsbooks6 This is something I'm fairly confident applies to me as well. I want to test this out more, to make sure, but... I'm pretty sure this is my taste as well.
SAME
I clicked that notification so fast. Nothing else matters when Kayla posts a new “challenge” video.
oop the flatshare kinda sucked so that's VALID
coming from a romance reader ;)
Hated thaaat
I loved itttt
I DNFd it and I love British contemporaries :(
Two absolutely quotable quotes one to follow the other, “This is the year that we support everybody in their reading.” & the best yet, “No more reader shame in 2020.” Yes yes yes!
A one hour Lala video when I’m sick on the couch... best day ever!
The mother of **A CHILD**
I have an entire excel spreadsheet about booktubers 2019 favourite books so I can find out which books we share the same opinion on. So this is right up my alley.
I really hope you find a romance that you will enjoy!
Ok, so there's one very important question that arose for me from this video: Why the hell am I not following Gabby yet? Anyone who has Red, White and Royal Blue AND Top Secret on their favourite list is my person.
As far as this video goes, I am always conflicted when it comes to Kayla reading something like Red, White and Royal Blue. We have very different tastes and I mostly watch her videos just because I like her as a person, not neccessarily for recs. So, with RWARB I was initially excited that she would read that, because it's my favorite book, but that the other part of me reminded me that she probably wouldn't like it :D.
Still love the video though, obviously :D. I'm never really worried that Kayla won't like something because I know she wouldn't judge, so it's still fun to watch since the anxiety is not there.
i think one of the nicest things about *red, white & royal blue* is how, like you said, safe it is and not painful/dramatic. most very popular lgbt+ books tend to be heavy and hard-hitting because truly, that's how the experience goes for a lot of people in our reality, and those books are fine and obviously very important to exist and be out there. but imo the genre deserves more books like this too, books that feel like those cozy hallmark movies where you know all is gonna be fine at the end because you are watching a hallmark movie. i personally hope a lot more (what my friend called "aggressively happy ending") books like this will pop up in this genre as mainstream because i think it's important to not just have stories to represent our realities but also ones that set out to be optimistic about it too.
Chelsea” smutty” 💋🔥 Kayla : 😳👀
WHAT OMG. Okay I’m only 20 minutes in and SO NERVOUS. But here we gooooo 🙈
LOL. As soon as I saw that you picked me I was like “oh dear god please don’t pick baby teeth” 😂 Thank you for trying it though! I always love how honest you are with your thoughts on whatever book you read. This was so much fun to watch, and hopefully didn’t totally make you lose trust in any of my future thriller recs ! 🤪🙈♥️
@@zoeedelaney hahahahaha I'm so glad I didn't upset you with this lol, I'm so shocked how similar our thriller taste is and I'm *thrilled* to keep an eye out for your recommendations in this genre moving forward. I literally can't name more than a handful of people who I know loved The GrownUp and AHATBOAL, two of my all time favourite short stories. Baby Teeth was definitely a fluke lol, I'm very excited to see where our tastes align in 2020!
BooksandLala yes!! 👏🏼 love those books so much. And all your thoughts and opinions were super valid! It was such an honor to be included in this video and can’t wait to see what 2020 holds! ♥️
I love you both so much. 2 of my favorite booktubers!!!
Me: nope youtube I don't have time to watch this 10 minutes video
Also me: an hour long video from Kayla? No problem mate 🍿
I love that you try things you don't think you'll like and will read outside of your comfort zone. Yes you're on a public forum, but ultimately reading is for your pleasure.
Watching booksandlala is my tv for the week. I feel like I haven't got enough this week .
You should do the same but with least favourite books of 2019
I like how you approach your videos and your reflexions on the books you read. I've been enjoying your videos so much lately. Truly my fave booktuber x
OMG i so did not notice the length of this video until you put a time stamp that reading starts at 21 minutes :o 😂
I paused this video while you were first explaining Baby Teeth to go over and add it to my goodreads, but then I got there to see your one star rating! Sooo back now to see the spoilers!
"who am i? what am i doing?" what a mood kayla.
The majority of your videos are always such unique ideas that I love watching. You are the queen of book tube! I will watch anything you post. I had heard of and read all of the books you mentioned but based on your opinions I’m bumping some up on my TBR. Thanks for being awesome ;)
I haven't finished the video yet but can I just say, Kayla, I am LOVING the new stuff you're doing with the editing. The sound editing when you're showing clips of others videos, the graphics on your reading stats/with the diagrams of the books in this video, I LOVE all of it. It feels so clean and easy to follow.
Ok back to watching
You are literally one of maybe three people I will watch a 58 minute long video from.
I enjoy your humor and I’m here because you read typically outside of my comfort zone but I’ve gotten recommendations from you so when you challenge yourself it’s inspiring. I get that it sucks when you step out of your comfort zone and something sucks, but I think reading more than just your favorites makes you a more well-rounded reader. I’m so thankful that you do these videos.
I wonder if I’ve missed a video you’ve done that’s specifically recommending thrillers for those that like some but are picky so the genre at large is out of their comfort zone. I enjoy your insights and the way you understand what tends to interest others, so I’m hoping I can find more thrillers I’d enjoy. Funnily enough, I’d just heard about The One and added it as Want to Read today prior to seeing this.
Kayla, THANK YOU for being the *only* booktuber I've seen speak critically about Red, White & Royal Blue. I also rated it 2 stars and had several of the same thoughts (though you articulated them so much clearer!). I had really hoped to love it and was disappointed I didnt.
The intro or preview part of your videos are always so funny, like "I'm not that dead inside". If that sets the tone for the rest of the video I am so ready.
I always appreciate when you try books that you wouldn’t “typically” like because I get to hear your thoughts on them. I watch other videos and I wonder what you’d think about it! Sometimes books are a mix of what you would like and what you wouldn’t and it’s nice to see where you fall on that spectrum
I really enjoyed The One by John Marrs too! So glad more people are reading it, it's my go to thriller recommendation.
I love watching these challenge videos because I end up adding so many things to my tbr! Even things that you don't end up liking. Like the vlog where you read the Thousand Doors of January and didn't really care for it; I'm absolutely obsessed. I've also started some recommendations from you that I didn't end up loving, but having these recommendations good or bad have led me to read so many things that I wouldn't consider picking up in the first place. So, thank you! Also an hour long video? We love to see it.
Girl - keep doing what you're doing! You've inspired me to step outside my comfort zone this year, picking up more thrillers and classics!!
Yes! I've been waiting for this since the RWRB instagram post a few days ago!
I loved 'The Last True Poets of the Sea' and I'm so glad you loved it too! I've watched both Chelsea and LibraryofAlexa talk about how much they loved it in their favorites videos too, so I'm so glad it getting the recognition it deserves! Not sure if you muted Chelsea's explanation of the book, but she does explain that the ending is up to interpretation because of the whale songs. I personally took it as like a tiny moment of speculation, but I can totally see how you think it's not! I saw it on your insta stories those days you were reading it and I've been sitting with anticipation wondering what you thought! SUCH an awesome video, I'm gonna have to give The One a shot at some point it seems so cool!
Had to pause whatever I was watching for an hour of Lala - i'm ready!
you have the best concepts for videos, I swear and yaaaaaas we long these hour long videos! thanks so much queen xo
I read The One last year and it is definitely an all time favourite! Im so happy you enjoyed it. I legit cheered when you said you rated it so high.
One thing I really appreciate about the stats portion of your videos is how thorough you are with the graphics and visuals. I know those take a long time to edit, but I definitely appreciate it!
Thank you so much for taking the time to do long, well-thought out videos like this. We love anything you put out, but sometimes things like this make the subscribers feel really appreciated. Like you put in work for these videos! Just cuz you love us! (As a friend).
This video was much needed for me!! Thank you💕💕 I’ve been STRUGGLING today and curling up and watch this video was the perfect distraction from everything
I watched the full 58mins and All I heard was that you might potentially read Scythe and now I’m waiting until that happens 🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽
oh yes we're being blessed around here
I love these challenges so much! 🥺 Thank you so much for doing this!
We don’t even have similar reading taste BUT I always love and appreciate your videos. I love hearing your thoughts and explanations for why you loved or didn’t love something haha. I 100% agree. No more shaming readers !! Everyone read whatever you want. I hope we all have an amazing reading year.
You’re videos are so entertaining and smart. Thank you for the hard work that went into this 💗
I'm living for the thumbnail and this video in general. Totally agree with you about Red, White and Royal Blue!
I love your videos and I appreciate that you read different books to discover new genres that you might like, also your videos serve me to practice my English and finally your video where you read Little Women is one of my favorites because Little Women was my favorite reading from last year and I am very happy that you like it 💛
A lot of people hated the flatshare but I happened to love it. I think it was super polarizing. Super excited that you are watching Zoe because she's awesome!
1 hour of you. The perfect birthday gift, thank you!
Your reactions to everyone’s video was so sweet and pure! I couldn’t help but laugh at your reaction every time a romance was mentioned haha. This was a great video!
An hour-long Lala video is everything I need on this Sunday afternoon
Your pure joy at seeing people say a book is on their list because you recommended it to them is like so freaking cute and it makes me so happy.
i'm currently reading a recommendation from you; the rave cycle! I'm nearly done with the dream thieves and I've already recommended it to others! Found your channel before Christmas and I am so hyped about reading more of your recommendations this year
I really love the concept of this video! Not onlyu am I hearing about some books I haven't known much about, but I'm finding some new people to watch too!
I love this concept, would you ever do this but reading other peoples’ worst books of 2019?
I honestly really liked this video, I also really like watching videos like this, because watching"recommendation"videos and watching their comments and reactions to books I think, are similar to reading actual book opinions on the back cover or thru Goodreads or something else
I love how your son was reading on the couch by you!! Me and my mom would always read next to each other when I was growing up ❤️
I love the fact that some people's favorites are not for you. It makes reading unique! The fact that we all don't like the same book keeps it interesting! Thanks for always being honest, I appreciate it!
coming back to this video after watching the most recent years, watching you “perfect” the way you select your reads should be proof enough on how you have grown as a booktuber ❤ ly kayla
It’s definitely one of my pet peeves when people are like “this is unbelievable” or “I had to suspend my disbelief” because that’s the point of reading?
A 58 minute video? Yes! what a treat!!
The more I watch Kayla's videos like this one, the more validated I feel by jumping outside of my comfort zone in books and being disappointed that I didn't find something I loved 😂😍 I always WANT to discover something new that I like, it just doesn't always turn out that way.
Me realising that the 58 video is nearly over but still wanting to watch more. Oh well I guess I'll just be rewatching some of your other video's.
Avoided watching this video for the last couple days just so I can sit on my desk and journal as I watch this! As per usual quality content only from Lala 🖤
I love seeing you read whatever you want to read 💜
YESSS I have been hounding booktubers to read John Marrs! So happy you loved it
Kayla, I'm so glad you loved The One. John Marrs is amazing The Passagers and The Good Samaritan are also brilliant!
love these styles of videos, i'm so ready
i love this, I've been having a meh day so far and this is already making me smile🥰🥰
Just as I was rewatching old vlogs. Yasss. My queen. xxx
This video was so enjoyable to me. Thanks for making it! I love seeing people try this. Makes me want to!
I like that you read books you don’t completely expect to like. In my opinion, it makes for a more entertaining/ interesting video. You and I barely have the same reading taste but I watch for the fun content.
Thank you for always putting out quality content!! Always enjoy watching your videos
Girl you’re amazing. I went into this thinking you were just gonna read their number one books, not go through their whole list, so props to you! Also love your honestly on their picks 😂
I LOVED RW&RB but I totally agree with your review. It was so fun and made me feel so warm and fuzzy, but even I thought “wow this is kind of dragging” at the end.
First of all, thank you for another long and entertaining video, your content is such a bright spot on youtube. Secondly, I truly hope that one day my dreams come true and you read The Troop by Nick Cutter! I scared both my cat and my roommate with the noise I made when you started talking about it.
Anyways, I had the exact same reaction to Baby Teeth. While I was reading it I was so excited to see what was coming next and I KNEW there had to be something more and then... There wasn't. So disappointing!
Can't wait to look into John Marrs, never heard of him or his books but they sound very intriguing, and I loved your comments on The One!
I enjoyed this video and your willingness to read books out of your comfort zone from time-to-time. You make such unique & what seems like (you may disagree) well thought-out video content. I appreciate and enjoy viewing it all. You read such different genre's in books that I usually add some to my tbr's.
