    Thanks, Scott! Video Editing Eric wishes Reader Eric would let him sleep more too. 😅 Really interesting to hear your response to Blackouts and how much you got out of it despite not vibbing with the experimental mode of it. Great to hear how much you enjoyed The Pull of Stars and Minor Detail as well since those were two of my favourites back in 2020. And Loop Tracks sounds so good! What a lovely BIG project and thanks for all you do! 📚

    I feel like I’ve made it on Booktube now I’m in this video! 🥳 Also loved that you couldn’t read one of my favs last year because you’d read them all and they were either 5 stars or DNFs! Now I need to find out how I did… 😂

    • @AliceandtheGiantBookshelf

      Absolutely astonished at how high my out of your comfort zone book ranked! I should have known emotionally devastating would override everything else. 😂 Also, pretty much all of these books sound incredible so thanks for this video, it was a really great watch, and now I’m off to watch lots of lovely new to me channels! And to cry about the state of my TBR after this.

    Scott, I winced when I saw which book you chose from my recommendations. I know that you don’t usually get on with magic realism and horror so I was really surprised that Alicia Elliott’s debut ended up as high on your list as it did. And Then She Fell is a powerful book.
    I DNFed Small Joys so I’m encouraged by your experience with that one.
    It’s heartening to see your attitude towards YA literature is shifting. A good book is a good book and there are plenty of them within the YA category.
    I enjoyed this entire video, even though it was interrupted about 12 times by advertising. Thanks so much for shouting out my channel and for introducing me to new booktubers and books.

    • @GunpowderFictionPlot
      @GunpowderFictionPlot  Před 4 měsíci +1

      And Then She Fell was a strange choice from me. I can't remember why I picked it. I know it wasn't my first choice from your , but I had difficulties finding a couple of books.
      I'm not very sure what makes a book a YA any more... But I know I was wrong about it previously.
      I'm surprised you didn't enjoy Small Joys, but I hope it redeems itself with you too.

    • @lindysmagpiereads
      @lindysmagpiereads Před 4 měsíci

      @@GunpowderFictionPlot I suspect I was just in the wrong mood for Small Joys. Suicide is a hot button for me because I have lost dear ones to that fate.
      YA is focused on the lives of teen characters, as seen from a teen viewpoint (or very slightly older) as opposed to an adult looking back on their teenage self of long ago. I don’t mean that all YA is in first person, only that there’s the sense of immediacy with that age. YA can be any genre. There are crossover books that are marketed to separately to adults and teens, often with different covers, which show that YA is hard to pin down as a category.

    I'm worried about The Covenant Of Water now. Cutting For Stones is a favorite. Hopefully, I'll enjoy it more than you did. I was pleased to hear your review of My Brillant Friend. I think the lst book is the best in the series. YA has come a long way. Books like The Firekeeper's Daughter, Ace of Spades, and The Hate U Give have inspired me to read more YA. I will definitely read As Long As The Lemon Trees Grow because Kaitlin and I have similar tastes. Thank you for introducing me to new to me booktubers, authors, and books. I appreciate your through reviews!

  • @OliviasCatastrophe

    The genre blend for only good indians actually has me intrigued now! The parisian being a dnf was a surprise to me for sure. not sure why but when you said 'strong white lady accent' i cracked up so much. I worked on idol burning back when I was at canongate. I felt medicore about it. I think it fell into being too short to be effective for me, but a good concept and story. I dnfed maeve fly lol. It was too wild for me. Glad you enjoyed concerning my daughter ^.^ I think it is masterfully done and I can't wait for her new book coming this year. A monster calls is one of my all time favourites -- well I love everything I've read by patrick ness but that one handled grief and some of the truths of terminal illness related grief so truthfully. I've read a lot of emma donoghue and I think the last one of hers I am going to try is the pull of the stars (and already have it on my shelf as well). 20 mins left but third comment pending as I am v hungry and am taking a food break!

  • @OliviasCatastrophe
    @OliviasCatastrophe Před 3 měsíci

    I have been dithering and dathering about reading my brilliant friend or not so after that review I'm just going to actually add it to my tbr wishlist once and for all. It's been years of wondering around it. As long as the lemon trees grow is a young adult book waiting for me on my shelf. And I'm looking forward to it ^.^ I just need to be in the mood for something emotional, but I am currently in the mood for genre fiction. Love that you are reading more YA lately and giving the age audience a chance!

    • @GunpowderFictionPlot
      @GunpowderFictionPlot  Před 3 měsíci +1

      I have to be honest, I didn't know As Long As The Lemon Tree Grows was YA until I was preparing my review of it and looked it up online. I can't even identify YA at the moment, other than if the protagonists are young.
      My Brilliant Friend is a slow burn. I would be interested to hear your thoughts on it when/if you read it.

    First of all, thank you for the lovely shoutout! I’m humbled to be included in a video with so many amazing booktubers that I enjoy watching. (There are also a few new to me channels here that I will go check out)
    I really enjoyed The Only Good Indians, but I like horror, fantasy, and magical realism. His writing style is a bit different, so I could see why it might’ve been a difficult read.
    How Not To Drown was in my favorites for 2023. The MC reminded me very distinctly of so many older Caribbean Latina women that I know, but not in a stereotype or cliche way. If you haven’t been around Dominicans, Cubans, or Puerto Ricans, it might be a bit of a disconnect. It captured all of the endearing things. And I think having come out of college right in the economic collapse when this book is set in really also made it resonate more.
    Erdrich is hit and miss for me. Loved The Sentence. DNF’d some of her other books. I haven’t read Round House yet, but I have a copy on the shelf.
    Flowers For Algernon is such a gut punch. It is a bit simplistic, but emotionally very effective. Definitely of its time though.
    Idol Burning is new to me and sounds like a Kaitlin book. Definitely adding it on. Online friends. Check. Socially Awkward. Check. Definitely going to relate to that one.
    Ahh Blackouts. I just got a copy of this from my mom. Interested to get into it.
    Co-Wives, Co-Widows sounds like a Kaitlin book too. Added to the list.
    Pretty much just added any of the top 10 that I haven’t read to my TBR.
    I am so happy to see that As Long As The Lemon Trees Grow made it so high in the list. It truly is fantastic. I won’t say that it’s typical of YA, but I will say that there are more and more well-written, deep YA books out there. The way I approach the genre is the same way I approach romance cautiously and strategically. 😅

I also really enjoyed Boy Parts and found that they were also similar in how of their locale they were. I remember slang in Boy Parts going over my head for out British it was and, having lived in LA, I can say Maeve Fly is very LA.

    I can see how Cara could be a difficult character with which to connect. I have quite a few friends that are from South America (it is great to connect with fellow immigrants to Spain 😊)and my husband lived in the Dominican Republic for a couple of years which may explain why the way Cara communicated felt very familiar and real to me. Some years ago a movie was made based on the book 'A Monster Calls'. It's heartbreakingly sad (you'll need a box of tissue if you watch it), but I highly recommend. Must read the book now. So many other great recommendations. As a chicken mom, I'm looking forward to 'Nives'. And also a nurse, I'm intrigued by 'The Pull of the Stars'. Just want to see if E. Donoghue gets the hospital enviro right. I was not a fan of 'Room', so I hope Pull will redeem her for me. I always wind up adding at least 3 books to my TBR when I watch your videos. Thanks!

    This is such a great achievement not only for reading 30 books, but also for being able to keep up with so many other BookTubers and speaking so passionately and personally about them. I can't keep up, and I feel so bad about it!
    I was about to be amazed at there being book from my 2023 top ten that you hadn't already read, but I see you've had to pick from my honorable mentions! I guess much like what you said, it was some of the limitations of the book that kept it out of my top ten, but I think it's always hard to go back and read an influential book when you've experienced things that have built on it since. I had the same problem with reading Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep / watching Blade Runner.

    Not responding as this deserves but I wanted to thank you for such an ambitious project. It was such a joy to watch. So happy Contoras landed for you. I really enjoyed that perspective as it's a part of the world/time that doesn't get a lot of attention. I admit I have a soft spot for Stephen Graham Jones but I can see absolutely why he wouldn't hit for you. For me it's more of a case of I'm not sure if I ever even really ENJOY the work, but he always makes my brain go; huh in ways that make me want to stick on. I don't feel so terrible about my lack of appeal to The Parisian now. I had to read ALgernon in school and remember nothign about it. Maeve Fly I really don't want to read but you al most make me want to as it sounds like quite an experience. Thanks for reminding me of Lemon Trees and Book of night women.

  • @eyesonindie

    Thank you SO much for the shout out!! Very good points about The Parisian. I think Hammad was trying to go for a sweeping, 19th century style novel with a million characters. Which is a tricky thing to try on your debut novel! I think I preferred the second half of the novel, and actually preferred the other perspectives to Midhat's (his wife's perspective is probably my favorite). Though I also liked the first half. So I think if folks didn't like the first half, they probably shouldn't stick around for the second!

I just discovered Jess at Stalking Kafka earlier today, saw her Women's Prize predictions video, then later the long list was announced and I think she predicted five, amazing!... including And Then She Fell, another indigenous North American story that I think has a horror element, would probably make a great companion read to The Only Good Indians -- which I read last year, and it's top notch.

Finding this was released made my morning! Also, I was so nervous because my favorite book from last year was on here, and I was terrified you were going to trash it, and then our friendship would have to end!! 😝. But A Monster Calls had a respectable rating, so my love for your content continues!! 😂. Thank you for giving me something very interesting to focus on instead of my pain.

    Whoop whoop! My favourite video of the year is here!!!
    Very pleased with how I’ve placed this year. Not that it’s a competition (but it kind of is 😜)
    There are several BookTubers here that I need to check out! And some books that weren’t even on my radar!
    Awesome job - both to Scott and editing Scott 😂

    Thanks for picking my favourite! I honestly would not have expected you to like it given everything I know about your tastes. 😂 But 2/3 of the book is the best part. The last section about the granddaughter was totally skippable. This was quite the project trying all of these!

    Hahahahaha! I'm 3 'n 0 for dnf's on this yearly instalment. It's truly an honour.Thank you so much for including me again this year and with a book that you kinda knew you wouldn't like. I am going to make it my personal challenge to read a book that you haven't yet read by the end of 2024 and include it at the last minute on my best of with you in mind - I swear! Also, thanks for highlighting some new to me booktubers. This is the best video of the year to me. ❤❤❤

      @@GunpowderFictionPlot thank you. I never know which one will pop up when answering. If it is Eiketske, that is the dialect word for (red) squirrel where I am from. If it is Reading is like Breathing, that is because that is what it is for me. The day I don’t read I am either in a coma in hospital or dead… 😁 I read when I wake up to start off my day and every free minute I have a book in my hand. I sometimes get away with reading at work, because yeah, librarian working at the library 😂

    Frank McCourt’s “Angela’s Ashes “ is both funny and sad and will tear open your heart after you laugh out loud. It is also the book I used to restart a son to read when he stopped as an adult. You might even continue to read about his life in America and his NYC classroom. His brother Macaulay, also wrote a book you might like.
    I love your program and your family(husband and dog). Thank you !!

    More booktubers to follow. Yay. The inclusion of Tony Abbott. Boo. I recently read Ordinary Human Failings and thought it was very good. I also recently read Why We Are Here by Briohny Doyle on your recommendation, which I enjoyed, but I think I preferred Echolalia. I will be happy to read whatever she brings out next.

    I totally get that the Dawnhounds isn’t for everyone, but it is definitely not pro-police. It’s ultimately an anti-cop story!
    Also, as a children’s bookseller, As Long As The Lemon Trees Grow is definitely a great young adult book, but it is YA and there are some incredibly thoughtful and well written books in the category! Some of my other favourites are Catching Teller Crow, The Boy from the Mish, The Poet X, Catfish Rolling, Last Night at the Telegraph Club, Magic Fish, and I haven’t read it but Darius the Great is Not Okay has been given as a comp for Lemon Trees.
    Great video!

      Thank you and thank you for the YA recommendations. I also enjoyed The Poet X, although that is the only one from your list I have read. I am starting to realise that I judged YA on YA fantasy at a time when I was falling out of love with fantasy, it's kind of cool to have a new genre that might really work for me. I'm not seeing a big difference between YA and adult, except for a younger protagonist.
