Had to do the same thing on vacation last summer with my ‘56 7.5hp. In my case, the rope snapped when fully pulled out on the first pull. Luckily, I had a big screwdriver with me. I hate struggling with those recoil springs… The 50s 5.5 and 7.5 are still some of the best engines ever made, they just keep reliably going and going decade after decade.
I gave a question for you. I have a 1986 johnson 8hp and the carb body is cracked and almost impossible to find. Can the carb of a six horse work on that 8hp?
Gotta 71 6hp recoil is bad different style than that. I think I need new spring and rope. Took it apart and the edges are too sharp I thought also, will clean and grease while waiting for parts which are still available 👍
Is that counter clock wise from the bottom or the top ? lol. I can't believe you didnt have any tools with you , wow ! First rule in boating is Hammer , Plyers , Both types of screw drivers and rope ! Thats like going fishing without bait ! How fast is that current there ? I got one for you ..... Dispelling the myth of Pressure tanks ! or converting that block to a 6HP WITH CDI !
Well what myth? That they can explode? Or leak everywhere? CDI shouldn't be a problem. But 6 HP might be. The 5.5 intake manifold has a pretty small opening, and the intake is needed to properly hold the starter.
@@BrandonsGarage this is true ... just thinking of material for you and yes the exploding fuel tanks that never happened ! Ive used them on cars and small motors that the fuel pump quit working or the tank was rusty .

Great video 🎉🎉😅😅😅😅😅
This starter makes the crap Bendix ones look good!
yeah, very true.
Almost gotcha😮
Too funny....."typical for working on old outboards"
I've been WD40;ing the starter on my 18HP Tohatsu for years.
Mainly because i'm lazy but also because i hate those recoil springs
Off topic, do you have any diagram or can you show how the water flows through an early 80s V4 cross flow with the thermostat at the bottom??

That spring could be a finger breaker😢😢😢

Is there a way I can contact you or email you with a question or two?
Yeah, my email is in the about section of my channel
