My dad is in his late 60’s, and was out of the demographic of games, but he told me that the music in the first video games was so rudimentary and viscerally annoying; original music in video games turned him away from them. Ironically, as games begun to be capable of playing more intricate music, studios would hire professional composers and musicians to make up for the gameplay and graphical limitations. David Wise is a genius, and I only recently found out that he wrote the intro theme to Wizards And Warriors, which was the song that got me into making music. Only while listening to all of his work did I find out that he also made that theme. :}

That metal clanging beat in the background is a big part of it for me. People always seem to change it or downplay it, but it's such a big part of the song for me that it just doesn't quite sound right when it's changed.

i just use openspc with the original rom and it spits out a .it file which you open up in a tracker and it has all the arrangements and samples
