  • Tuppence A Bale was filmed in Dundee during the mid 1980's and is the only film showing a Stower carrying Jute on his back. It's also in colour which is fantastic! This unique video is another part of Dundee History!

Brilliant video. As said the only of a kind. Be great to have this on show at Verdant Works. Was there yesterday and that was so informative about lots of aspects of the mills but never seen anything like this. Well done to everyone, past and present who made this.

I still have my jute hook i used for hauling the bales around on the rear of my lorry . The buildings these lads are working in where taken over by willie henderson who stored and repaired accident damaged cars until recently when he moved premises to Tealing outside Dundee . This is an excellent video well preserved and a nice trip down memory lane for me .Some of the drivers where willie whammond , dave (bunter mollison) , jim fitchet and many more . It was a time of good wealth in Dundee

This is NOT Matt McVicar in this video but his elder brother John or Jock McVicar. Matt was a stower as well but he is NOT in this video.

I worked with John Findlay Haulage Contractors (geordie stewart) who ranted findlay lochee when answering the phone pmsl . They was based at the top of balfield road now Dingbros car parts . We moved jute from the sheds at the docks now Taza resturant and chinese eat what you like for a fiver shops the lot . Its a dying generation of hard workers good men and sad to see all these buildings being either demolished or change of use .

forgot to mention Dave Black he was a driver aswell . He went on to work for the council as a security man at the bottom of the multis in Ardler until he passed in the 90's . I am very pleased to see you have posted a very significant part of our heritage and history on the net . Well done and thanks to all involved .
