Cotton, the most abundant natural fibre in the world, followed by jute in second position, requires twice the amount of land and time, and over five times the amount of water and huge amounts of chemicals.

In this front Bangladesh is working fantastically...they have invested a lot to diversify the usage of jute...and bring tech support.
On other hand we are just doing nothing effective, Central govt has never came up with solid plan to revive the jute sector of kolkata ...instead time to time they just used the term dying city for kolkata...to distant themselve from investing in kolkata.
To become a prosperous country Government must realize that it's equally important to strengthen the existing industry,on the parallel line of attracting new industry growth.
This is the fact that china realized, and now they are in front of us....with a higher middle class income economy.

My grandfathers on both sides worked in jute mills. I still live in an area that sits between 2 jute mills. But the condition of jute mills is very bad and pathetic. After plastic came into the market, the jute industry isn't doing well. It is on the verge of collapse. The mills remain shut down for months and people loose a steady source of income for many months of the year. It is such an environment friendly packaging option, I hope the government revives the industry and use it to maximum potential.
