  • The UK is a nation of traditions, folklore and rites whose origins have been obscured by the mists of time. People from every corner have been meeting up for hundreds of years to dance, drink, dress up or throw flaming torches about as a way of celebrating death, fertility, hope or local pride. And these peculiar practices have a way of clinging on, and surviving longer than you would imagine.
A witches’ coven, a skeletal horse, Vikings, village rivalries and faceless musicians wearing straw masks all play their part in this video. Do you recognise any of these local rituals and celebrations?
    00:00 Haxey Hood, Lincolnshire
02:38 Witches' Fertility Cult, secret location
03:43 Straw Wedding, Derrylin, Co. Fermanagh
04:14 Plough Stotting, Goathland, North Yorkshire
    06:36 Up Helly Aa, Shetland
07:25 The 'Obby 'Oss, Padstow, Cornwall
08:02 Mari Lwyd, Vale of Glamorgan
09:37 .... and back to Haxey Hood.

I went to school in Haxey and lived in Westwoodside for a few years in the 1960s. My parents didn't let me go to Haxey Hood though. This is the first time I've seen what actually went on in the fields

Great stuff, especially the Lincolnshire hoods and the spooky Welsh horse from the documentary Here We Come A-Wassailing, which would be a good addition to the BBC iPlayer.

They did a good job of making pagan an evil word. We see Community spirit and camaraderie here, not necessarily ungodly folk.

Except for the ludicrous 'witches fertility cult' which has absolutely no relevance with the folk customs shown in the video there is nothing here that can be shown to be 'pagan'.

Depends what you mean by 'indeginious'. If you done your 23 and me you would knew that R1a stands for southern Russia

It’s time we returned to the traditional ways of the people of these isles. If we made a few reasonable sacrifices to the gods then the price of electricity would come down and our schools would stop crumbling

There’s some good pagan culture. That’s the real stuff from these isles, influenced by the land and the earth. None of that imported christian rubbish.. “… and did those feet..” no, they didn’t.

None of the customs shown in the video have any 'pagan' origins.
The 'secret witches coven' (which has no relevance to the rest of the video) is just a lot of modern made up nonsense.

    Just to be clear.
Ignoring the hilarious and quite ludicrous 'witches fertility cult' (which has no relevance to the rest of the video) none of these customs can be shown to have 'pagan' origins.
