If you're looking for traditional Ecuadorian food, Quito is famous for 3 empanadas: empanadas de viento, which translates to wind empanadas, empanadas de verde, or green plantain empanadas, and empanadas de morocho, which are empanadas made with morocho a type of corn.

In 2010 I left a job in advertising, 5 year relationship and sold all my possessions to travel the world. In the last ten years I've had some crazy experiences and even owned a restaurant in Toronto at one time. And prior to 2020 I had been based in Cuba.
When the world shut down I returned to Canada and decided to teach myself video. I wanted to share more than just words and photos but to show people the adventures I have learning about food around the world.
I'm not married. I have no kids. But I do have a lot of local friends who help me discover the best local tips.

Love Ecuador? You'll adore these Ecuador t-shirts: ecuador.myspreadshop.com/
dont leave Ecuador stays for ever i love yours videos.
There's so much more to see so I won't be leaving any time soon!
I must say the empanadas in Ecuador are simply the best I have tried in Latin-America. So light and airy, absolutely delicious!
They can be so delicious although I have a couple faves in every country, especially the spinach ones in Argentina
Well presented travel log around Quito. You should be on the Food Network. You explain the food and sauces well! I appreciate the authentic homemade and homegrown sauces
Wow thank you for such a thoughtful comment. It made my day.
oh boy.! the verde one.. yes please!!!!
They are my favourite
Omg those empanadas look like they’re to die for. They’re massive!
definitely for sharing!
OMG that's a monster empanada ❤️✨
All of them were so large they were enough to share!
Your videos are always the absolute best. Thank you for educating us on foods to look for in Ecuador. Think about doing a section in each video were Andreas talks in Spanish so those of us wanting to go to Quito can hear what the area dialect and accent sounds like. Maybe put the translation in subtitles. I have watched lots of Spanish videos to learn Spanish but it’s hard to find ones that have a quito native speaking in Spanish with subtitles. If you search CZcams with the term super easy Spanish, it’s a group of young people who do Spanish language videos with a method called comprehensible input. It’s really cool. They are from Mexico however and of course the language and accent is different.
Andres grew up in Quito but has lived in Cuenca the past 17 years and those two cities have very different accents and even slang and then in Guayaquil they have their own accent and along the coast as well.
I used to go to a place in Tumbaco that sold empanadas de verde but they closed during COVID. loved going there every time I went to Ecuador. Happy for your recommendation, can’t wait to try it next time I go EDIT: my favorite was when they had chicken, hope you are able to try those one day
Oh I'd love to try that as well!
Nice presentation. I need to visit the verde empanada. A suggestion for best Morocho empanadas are in Empanadas Asuncion in 6 de Diciembre across the street from Colegio Benalcazar Their empanadas actually have tins of meat filling. They make verde and viento empanadas too.
Oh thank you so much!
Nice! Now I don’t have to plan where to eat the next time I am in Quito, just ride to one of these places! I bet the viento empanada, broken up, would look like a big bag of chips. Take one to go, and bring it home as a base for party nachos!
yes that is exactly what it's like!
Me hiciste dar hambre!
now adding Pelileo empanada to my must eat list! I also love how something as simple as an empanada is so different in Latin America, and then you see similar foods all over the world like samosas

I would not know to decide on one of the 3 they look very tasty... Thanks
They are all wonderful in different ways
Love your videos please make many many many moreeeee ☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️
I have lots more to come! If you have specific things you want to see let me know.
El paraíso de las Empanadas 🥰
Claro que si!
Ayngelina,
I truly enjoy the history behind all the food you talk about. Your presentation is superb and humorous. I especially enjoy watching you savor every morsel. I can almost taste the empanadas with you and I find myself making the same sounds you make. My husband thinks I’m crazy. I wish you the best in all your travels.
Thank you so much! It is really a joy to both learn and share stories from Ecuador and other countries.
You make me hungry.
These empanadas were awesome.
Ayngelina, your videos keep getting better! Thanks so much for sharing the breakdown of the 3 Empanadas.
We've tried the empanadas de viento previously, however it wasn't in Quito, and we didn't know what we were ordering
at the time. I don't think we were advised of the "de viento" part. Your explanation is fantastic, and we didn't know
there were two additional versions. You are truly educating the audience. If only school had been this much fun!
We look forward to trying all 3, however based upon your camera work, The 2nd looked the most interesting.
At the same time, the 3rd location was genius to let you film in the kitchen. Do you think Alicia will see a bump
in business?
Once again, I offer many thanks for your subtitle magic! I understand it's a lot of work, and can only imagine it will pay
long term dividends for you and your channel.
Great job!
So I have learned from this video that A LOT of people have ordered empandas de viento and then were so disappointed, or thought maybe they were ripped off. I think the gigantic empanada is fun to try (there's another spot in La Ronda that does it) but the last two were my favourite. And I really do hope Alicia continues to do well because she's such a lovely person.
GREAT enjoy
What is your favourite empanada?
@@ayngelina empanadas de verde ..grasias x Compartir. Que sigan disfrutando
Good job
Thanks so much, it was a delicious day!
Am glad u made it safe to EC
aww thank you! So far so good!
The last empanada did look most delicious.
Alicia was also fabulous, which makes it such a fun experience.
I must get courage to travel
What is holding you back?
My mouth is watering. Great video 👌🏻
Thank you 😋 Andres said the same thing while I was watching it before posting and then left to go get an empanada at La Marejada!
@@ayngelina if you pass by Guayaquil you should try empanadas as well. They are a bit different of those in Quito but also delicious. My favorite spot is "Labra que labra". Btw, that aji con chochos y tomate de arbol is my second favorite spicy sauce. Terrific!
@@gonzaloalmeida1479 I really want to go back to Guayaquil and soon an overview video similar to what I did in Cuenca and Quito. What empanadas should I get there? And any other spots you recommend?
@@ayngelina you might find empanadas filled of chicken, beef, cheese, and shrimps. However, if you really want to show what is typical in Guayaquil, I recommend you to try sanduche de chancho with RC cola, or pasteles rellenos. It's difficult to me to give a recommendation now since I have been abroad for long time but with a small search for sure you will find the right spots. If you will post a video of that I would be eager to watch it 😀
@@gonzaloalmeida1479 you know I want what is most typical 💜 thanks for putting me in the right direction. I'm adding this to my Guayaquil list
Yum!!! :)
So different but so good
yes inded the best las de viento
Do you have any other favourites?
@@ayngelina las Chilenas as well known in the coast bake empanadas
yes but why are they called chilenas? They don't look like empanadas from Chile
That's huge one hehe
Muy sabrosas 🖐️🙏
Siii!
Cheeeeese! I'm so there!
How do you get your audio so crisp?
I wear a lav mic. I started with a RODE but there's always too much music and noise so a lav works best.
@@ayngelina I have a lav mic but it's not the best. Maybe mine's a cheapo. Which one are you using?
@@StephEatsnTravels I have the sony lav and it's not expensive at all, maybe 30 bucks. BUT the only downside is that it's short. Also you need to change your audio when you put the lav in. So if I don't use it the audio level on my camera is 15 but when I have it in I move it down to 5
@@ayngelina thanks for the rec! And wow, thanks for the tip about the audio level. seems so low
@@StephEatsnTravels oh I had no idea at all. My editor told me how to fix it.
Okay, I give up. I have been looking for a good empanada since I have arrived here: a dough covered with inside is cheese, onion and egg. I have not found it; but you...of course. I went to the Central Market in Cuenca, and ordered an empanada with cheese. Of course, I got home to find an empty empanada--doesn't matter since I am a carbo addict. Don't prefer the crunch... Anyway, thanks for educating me. There should be a course......
hahaha yes you got an empanada de viento! Although the regular empanadas here aren't often like Chilean with egg in it but you might find one like that at a bakery.
This not best empanada de viento
Where is your favourite in Quito?
I've tried the "empanada de verde" at "Marejada". It was really disappointed. Just one small piece of meat in the whole "empanada". An "empanada" stuffed only with green plantain dough, I don't think so. There is no cheese, no "chicharron" Actually is a "bolon" , in empanada shape.
""Encurtido" was fine, nothing extraordinary. I wouldn't recommend this site.
Oh no! that wasn't my experience the time of the video nor a few weeks ago. When did you go?
Their a lot of places in qutio that have good empanadas its really hard to pick . I have never heard of this place.
If you go let me know how you like it.
When I go visit my uncles, I will try it. I live in NY and my dad's side of family is their
Oh that's so nice that you can visit.
Cómo hace esa empanada TAN GRANDE...den la receta
Jjjj creo que es muy difícil para hacer 🤣
