    I'm glad someone did an objective review on these two devices instead of comparing them to gaming laptops or Desktops, which these devices should not be compared to.

      I've worked on a Dell XPS 15 for half a year, and I completely agree with Greg's assessment here. Right now I own a MacBook Pro 13" (non-touch bar, slightly higher specced than what Greg has) and I enjoy it even more than I thought I would. Yes it's crazy expensive, but the sheer quality of the device is unlike anything you'll get from any Windows laptop.

You can get a Zenbook model with the same specs as the Macbook (excluding the IPS panel, I think, but that shouldn't matter for a regular student) except it's 840 $ cheaper, so the comparison would be highly interesting.

With the laptop I currently have (hp beats by Dre editions) when I rewatch the gameplay I recorded it comes out Laggy because that laptop can't handle due to I believe the outdated processor. I have seen many reviews criticize this then praise how sturdy the hinge is. Im like sturdy hinge has a bit more resistance to open makes sense to me. People find things to complain about to complain. Similar to the coil whine I have heard mega coil whine from high end GPU's during my lifetime. The coil whine from the XPS 13 i've seen requires putting your ear to the keyboard which I am now convinced I don't use my laptop right as I have yet to find the reason to put my ear next to the keyboard to be able to hear it.

    I like how you spent two minutes of the video making an ad on dockcase to cover up the most serious flaw of the mac, lack of ports.
    And, from this video along,
    the xps 13 is lighter than the macbook pro 3
    has more ports
    has better display
    better battery life
    cheaper price tag
    more ram
    more powerful cpu
    oh and one more thing, that's a 2016 xps. Why don't you buy the 2017 model?

      @TomLaceyJohnson Před 6 lety

      Peter Lyu why the lack of ports? They have as many USB ports as the last MacBook Pros with standard usb a 3.0 ports. People don’t see that. The touch bar MacBook pros have more everyday useable ports than before. Yes you had more ports 2 thunderbolt, 2 usb 3, headphone jack, a card reader and a hdmi port but who used all of these on a regular basis?

    • @MrNubshow
      @MrNubshow Před 6 lety

      Better display is subjective. I think the MBP has a better screen in areas that are noticeable/matter most.
      The MBP screen is much brighter, over 500 nits compared to ~350 on the XPS.
      The MBP screen is also 16:10 aspect ratio, which for a lot of people, is better for productivity than 16:9 which the XPS uses.

    A pretty fair comparison, thanks for this. So it seems the main reason you prefer the Macbook is because of FCP, which is obviously very important as a content creator. I recently bought a new laptop and went with the XPS 13, and am loving it so far. I'm not a content creator and use my laptop mainly for running my small business. I agree the user experience is still a bit better on Macs but Windows machines have improved a lot in recent years, especially with battery life. I get about 8hrs per charge. I have had a bit of coil whine but not too often so I'm not bothered. It's getting harder to buy a bad laptop these days, I could have gone with the Macbook but decided to save some money.

    I must say, Apple does so many little things right that other companies just fail to.
    The keyboard, the trackpad, the speakers. It's not rocket science to do them right I'm positive. Yet you won't find any laptop with speakers as good as Macbooks. Trackpads as good as Macbooks.
    It's such a shame. No matter what anyone says, Apple *cares* about the user experience and the price tag for Macbook products, for these little nifty things alone, is very well justified.

More travel on the keys is better as well and prefer the rubbery carbon fiber feel to cold or after long use hot metal near my wrists. I have tried both and skew the opposite of this review. Not to mention I can't find a $700 MBP with QHD Touch screen I7 256gb SSD which is what I paid for my XPS 13.

      @SicSemperBeats Před 6 lety +1

      Samuel M Cohen Why would you prefer objectively worse sound?? Sure the trackpad can be prefrenced, but why would you want tinny speakers?. Plus no xps 13 is 700 out the store, you can't compare a used price to a new one. If thats so then I could get a mbp for $15 from a guy one day if I'm lucky, one more thing, the wrist rests don't get hot by design, I don't think any laptop's wrist rests get hot. I have had several laptops and MacBooks

    • @SamtheCanuck
      @SamtheCanuck Před 6 lety

      Sic Semper Beats but I can compare used to used and there's no MacBook Pro that comes close to 700 unless you are talking several years older. Not to mention worst processor storage space. The only thing I feel like the MacBook Pro has is better wifi which for $20 I'm fixing that Tuesday. I did lots of listening of the speakers from 0 to 100% and I don't hear the distortion that Salazar mentions and I feel like for a laptop it has a very full sound for what it is not to mention when the hell do I ever blast my laptop at full volume. Even if subjectively the MacBook Pro is better at sound it would be like comparing i'll Lamborghini and a Ferrari and going oh Ferrari tons better gets 3/10 of a mile to the gallon more on gas people don't buy laptops and in general high-end sports cars for speakers or gas mileage. And the worst thing of the MacBook is iOS I can't stand it maybe if I get install windows on it I prefer it but probably not since I feel like that's a selling point they try to have and why would I put windows on a inferior product. I love my iPhone 7 Plus hates iOS when it's on any type of computer form.

    Science Studio Disagree on the carbon fiber soft touch, I find the softer feel to be much nicer and way better for long laptop sessions, my hands used to feel pretty raw with the aluminum for long periods of time, no to mention the heat transfer to the top aluminum sheet as the laptop is running for 14-18 hours straight working, where you can feel the heat warming and pruning your hands through the keyboard. Disagree about the keyboard, I don't think the XPS feels "membrane-like" and the greater travel give you more tactile touch, but I'm comparing my XPS 15 fully loaded to a Macbook Pro 15 Fully loaded. Also the XPS 15 I have doesn't have coil wine, that sounds like it'd be annoying. Maybe the processor in the 13's can't dissipate heat well, but the 15 is super quiet, most of the time, even with when the fan comes on during heavy load. Yes Final Cut uses the hardware better, performs better in UX and exports more quickly than Adobe Premiere. And if that is the only thing you use your laptop for, than your conclusion is right. But you're not considering the performance differential in all the other programs, Illustrator, Lightroom, Photoshop, After Effects. If you don't need after effects, then Final Cut is fine, if you do need After Effects, then Premiere is the better choice, and Premiere runs better on the Dell. That is a true apples to apples comparison. In the future add a Premiere vs Premiere segment, because not everyone, even those on macs, only use Final Cut.

    • @GregSalazar
      @GregSalazar  Před 6 lety +7

      The performance differential between these two laptops in Adobe programs is negligible apart from the system RAM disparity. Core i5 and i7 ULP CPUs are hilariously similar in even the most intensive daily tasks.

      somewhat true but not really they would perform about the same if you compare a 15 inch mbp to the dell xps15. I have both although my MacBook Pro 15 is 2014 it exports around the same if not 20 seconds behind the xps 15 2016. the matching year mbp and xps 15 use the same cpus so why would it be any faster? Windows isn't just simply faster by default

    • @Jonathan_Wick
      @Jonathan_Wick Před 6 lety

      Sterling Sanders if you had a MBP fully loaded from 2016 with an XPS 15 fully loaded from 2016 you’d know that the MBP is much faster. The XPS 15 my friend has is fully loaded. I have an older 2015 MBP. We both record music and we’re in the studio together a lot. His XPS never had nor has coil whine but the fans do kick up really fast, my MBP on the other hand doesn’t and runs Ableton better then his maxed XPS 15. Believe me, having a “whirring” laptop on the console when recording is a nightmare. One thing that really helps is macOS and how low profile it is, when you use VSTs, like say Serum, which is notoriously CPU heavy, the optimization difference between the two OSs really starts to show. The MacBook in most “Pro” use cases will be faster. But that’s to be expected, as Apple’s main market are the power users, especially with their laptops. Having something that you can jump between sets or studios with that just always performs insanely well and works in any environment is great.

      thats such a hassle. Its so much work to initially get it to run, and to keep it running smoothly, and then there is the times when new MacOS updates comes out.... Nightmare. It's not reliable at all to have a Hackintosh as a primary computer, but I guess its good to have as a secondary, just for video editing and such. It's enough maintenance to keep hardware drivers on Windows updated, but running Hackintosh is like 100x worse than that, it requires time and patience when kernel crashes starts, even when you don't have any time.

    • @Astfgl
      @Astfgl Před 6 lety

      LifeStalker It's not that bad once you learn to use the correct tools, but you really need to buy your hardware with MacOS in mind. Some motherboards and expansion cards work perfectly with MacOS without any specific drivers, while others require endless fiddling to get working.

    • @midi-sama
      @midi-sama Před 6 lety +1

      LifeStalker actually, now things are waay easier, if you know how to do a good hackintosh and know your basics, upgrades wont be a problem, i had my laptop upgraded from 10.9 up to 10.12 and I only upgrade the 3rd party kexts once in 2 or 3 months (just so that im up to date with the latest). No patches are overwritten since they get patched at boot, the original os's kexts are kept untouched so that even after upgrades, i dont need to manually repatch them. Im having a near macbook pro (since my laptop has the exact specs of a MBP9,2) and my main one. I DO recommend it for fun and research purposes, but I DO NOT recommend it to be your main OS on your main machine if you're not experienced in troubleshooting issues on your own. Also, the battery life went up.

    Despite your positive points for the macbook, which are valid, I just can't support a company that is so opposed to repairing and modifying the products you own and increases it's margins by forcing connectors on you which aren't properly supported yet, even by apple themselves, and being inconsistent. And before someone jumps at me and says "USB C is the future, they are brave for adapting it early", why is it that the iPhone does not have USB C or a headphone jack, but their laptops do? If I'm an apple fanboy and only buy apple, I have to buy multiple chargers and headphones. They don't support the technology that is USB C but use it instead to sell you a bunch of adaptors.

Apple repairs are fine if they're covered by warranty, but many of them aren't and apple overcharges you for any repair, because they don't have repairable laptops and instead just throw out the entire board and give you a new one. Apple products are designed to not be servicable if anything breaks.

      Ya personally I had a spectre x360 and I only used the touchscreen VERY rarely. I don't miss it at all now that I use a MacBook. The touchpads on Mac's are still so far ahead of pretty much every Windows laptop, it's definitely a defining feature of Mac laptops

    As usual, MacBook wins! You get what you pay for. 2 years down the road, the XPS hinges Will get loose and fail and the battery will be shot. You'll be on your 3rd or 4th windows "refresh"/reinstall and when you try and resale it, you'll be lucky to get 300 bucks for it.
    Trust me. I've been down the PC rabbit hole. With much chagrin, Apple was the only light at the end of the tunnel.

      I've had the same windows laptop since 2010, and it was a cheapo $300 one. Hinges worked fine, windows never slowed down. Just throw an SSD in and that takes care of that. Those issues you speak of are what comes around when someone doesn't understand how to use a PC, and needs the safety net Mac OS provides. The kind of person who clicks every link they see on facebook and downloads every single toolbar to their web browser. But enjoy your limited operating system, paying more for less eh? lol.

      kyle brod kyle brod kyle brod Dude I've been using a PC longer than you've been able to shit in a toilet. I've been a PC user all of my life up until 2014. During those PC times I've used numerous laptops a crossed different manufactures. The best I can remember is my IBM T22, and my Dell XPS 701x spec'd out. Windows XP and 7 were damn good operating systems and compared to what OSX was at the time, might I say XP and 7 were BETTER than Apple. MS shot them selves in the foot with Windows 8 and up. I'm sure some younger people growing up with the tail end of win 7 going to 10 might have different opinions since they really haven't forcefully experienced other versions, thus why they love "newer, better" Windows 10.
      For your other argument, "you don't understand how to use a PC" .. Should a user really need to know how to use a PC? A good operating system she work right out of the box, no bloat, no slowing down, no "just install CC cleaner" no "just delete unneeded registry files" blah blah blah. It should just work. No training necessary.

    • @kyle-qw5yx
      @kyle-qw5yx Před 6 lety +16

      You shouldn't need training to read. Literally everything you install don't just press "express install." Mac is like Training wheels for your OS. Now I agree every damn download shouldn't try to push these things on everyone, but it takes 5 seconds to work around it. Not worth sacrificing all the perks windows has. IMO OSX is only superior for people who are content creators. I'm not trashing you for needing/wanting training wheels, but that doesn't make windows inferior by any means. Use it right and you're golden. & also for your comment on laptop batteries being shot, that just goes to show your lack of understanding and bias. Every battery whether its from Apple or Dell (they're literally likely sourced from the same places) has a finite number of cycles its rated for. If a battery is good for 2,000 cycles before it drops to 50% efficiency, the operation system or hardware that's draining the battery makes no difference. A cycle is a cycle.

    50-60% CPU use just opening task manager seems super weird, even on a ULV CPU. Even as far back as Core Duo machines, opening that on Windows 10 is a single digit afair after the initial opening for me.

    • @TechnoBabble
      @TechnoBabble Před 6 lety

      Yeah, I have no clue what he's talking about, there must be some other issue with the machine because even laptops with Celerons only have like 2-5% usage in task manager.

    I'm not sure if using both Windows and MacOS at the same time is the best solution. It can get pretty confusing when you have to regularly switch between different shortcuts and workflow. Maybe someone doesn't have such an issue with that but when I had to use mac at my work and then return to my home PC it was a bit tedious to switch between those environments.

    This mate just commented on this video asking about a hackintosh build, I made my own comment, just to show you that I also would be interested in a series on this!
    Maybe a like "raw/unedited" series? Of course you'd have to edit a little, or add music, but make it more of an experience of something you go through. It doesn't have to be hackintosh, it could be anything, just a more personal series that has longer video times, and a more raw approach.
    Keep up the great work
