  • Filmmaker William Rouse returns to Gamology to react to Red Dead Redemption 2 yet again. This time, William talks about the different lighting styles and how they change the feeling of a scene, the slow motion technique, symbolism, mood and dialogue in a narrative, and the thinking behind directing a shootout among other things. Join us as William takes a look at the gorgeous world of Red Dead Redemption 2.
The action-adventure game Red Dead Redemption 2 takes place in a Western-themed setting. In the game, players explore a fictionalized version of the Western, Midwestern, and Southern United States in the late 1800s, during the wild period of the Wild West. The player controls Arthur Morgan of the Van der Linde gang, a member of the outlaw gang, as he completes numerous missions to advance the plot.

2:06 No, Rockstar has their cutscenes where characters are involved done in motion capture. As Ned Luke from a previous Rockstar game explained, they're not voice actors that sit in a booth yelling their lines, they actually act out the entire scene in motion capture as you would for any other movie.

@@epicninjacakez6716 The quality of a story doesn't determine whether or not something is cinema or cinematic. The camera angles are obviously cinematic in some sense, perhaps the same sense that animated films are cinematic, but to call it a cinematic masterpiece is kind of absurd considering at the end of the day it's still a video game, and cutscenes are a somewhat minor part of that.
It's definitely a video game masterpiece, though, and that's no more or less impressive than a cinematic masterpiece.
I'd also strongly disagree that the camera angles are any better than most film and TV out there. Maybe you're watching the wrong shit.

@@Johnnysmithy24yup, grand theft auto has always had heavy movie influences, vice city with scarface and various other 80’s films & TV shows about the drug trade, san andreas with menace II society & other 90’s gang banger movies & tv shows, GTA V with its numerous heist films + TV shows and references to each, “blitz play” is a reference to heat, the vangelico job with some references to both the italian job & beverly hills cop 2 for the robbery itself, the paleto score a massive recreation of the 1997 north hollywood bank robbery and shoot out with police turned up to 11. GTA 3 had various mob movies for inspiration, GTA IV as well, along with the french connection (there is even a mission with a direct reference to the film called the puerto rico connection) and most obviously behind enemy lines at least for nikos look and partially his backstory, so yeah essentially R* has a long ass history dating back to at least 2001 of being inspired by cinema and using parts of or referencing movies and TV that inspired the show, hell back in the 3D era they’d even get famous actors known for that style of movie to play characters, like ray liotta & danny trejo in vice city, joe pantoliano & frank vincent for gta 3, both known for mob movies like goodfellas & the sapranos, mc eiht, ice-T & samuel L jackson for san andreas, they’ve moved away from that in the HD universe but it was quite common for R* to wear their inspiration much heavier on their sleeves

  • @duck74UK

    Regarding the acting:
This game was recorded basically the same way a CGI scene in a film is, all the actors are together in MoCap, they're shown what kind of environment they'd be in but the stage is just like, empty or some steps if needed. Because it's a game engine, and thus, doesn't need to be pre-rendered, they can even see how they'd appear in the game and review their scenes from the games perspective.
There also was alot of stuff recorded the traditional way too in a sound studio, but all the cutscenes and custom animation stuff was done on these stages.

When he was talking about Roger Deakins at the start and said "I wouldn't be surprised if they used Roger Deakins reference for this" they did in fact, before the quote you can see a man standing on top of something, this is a scene in one of the movies made by Roger Deakins where a train robbery is going to occur. You rob a train and stand on top of an oil tank to stop the train like they did in the movie

Well according to the devs they actually used performance capture rather than motion capture, and in performance capture the motion and voice lines are captured simultaneously, which made it kinda easier for the cinematographers and vfx artists and animators, and a little bit easier for the actors becoz it meant they can actually act perfectly and not worry about not matching the feeling of the voice and the motion.

The assault on braithwaite manor music is the best in terms of context and quality. War drums, high stakes, cold rage. Best atmosphere out of all missions in my opinion

The ride and then slow walk up to the estates manor goes sooooo hard. Its one of the first times we ever see the entire gang walk shoulder to shoulder weapons drawn clearly ready to do some dirty work. Easily the best cinematography of the whole game.
