- Welcome, Filmmaker William Rouse to the channel today. He will be reviewing one of the most cinematically pleasing video games of the last decade: Red Dead Redemption 2. When you think cinema, you might think Westerns, and for good reason - Storytelling, action-packed, craziness. William is here to walk us through various scenes both in-game and cutscenes describing how different camera angles and dialogue help guide the audience through a story with attention to detail being key. We hope you enjoy today's video and be sure to leave a warm welcome for William in the comments. Would you like to see him reacting to more games in the future?
The action-adventure game Red Dead Redemption 2 takes place in a Western-themed setting. In the game, players explore a fictionalized version of the Western, Midwestern, and Southern United States in the late 1800s, during the wild period of the Wild West. The player controls Arthur Morgan of the Van der Linde gang, a member of the outlaw gang, as he completes numerous missions to advance the plot.

Filmmaker: I wanna play this game
Gamology : let’s spoil him the ending..
Fr lol
Spoilers are overrated, i played RDR2 already knowing Arthur gets TB, still enjoyed every second of it and it's for me the best story game ever, yeah it could have been a better experience, but if the quality of a story is determined solely on the end then it's certainly not a good story, it's more about the journey.
@@Noizzed I agree, but the journey is always better when you dont know how it ends.
he won't get to cry like a lil buh buh buh bitch like i did because the build up is lost
@@kukkik7039 true... but if you're someone who grew up with spoilers left and right, it'll still be an enjoyable ride regardless. xD
I'm genuinely shocked they didn't show him the entire Braithwaite Manor scene, honestly the climax of the entire game.
That was the point I knew no matter what it would easily be a top 1% game. And the music playing at as you burn the place down wowowowowoowowow
For real! The shots were AMAZING. All the acting in this game is RIDICULOUSLY good.
Probably my favorite scene to play, truly captured everything the game was meant to be and meant to simulate
Especially when the moon shines on the gang
I was just thinking that!!!
14:27 It's also really cool to note that during an NPC camp conversation hosea asks arthur how he wanted to die and he replied "facing west, watching the sunset, watching an old day end" but he actually dies facing east, watching the sunrise, watching a new day begin, representing who he was and who he has become.
It's crazy how the little details come together so brilliantly.
I thought i was the only one who remembered that conversation, when i finished the game and saw that scene was like Bro...
This conversation also includes hints about hosea and Lennys deaths. Those 2 are discussing it before arthur joins and if you listen to them they will both say they want to die with their friends. After returning from Guarma we can visit their graves and they were buried side by side
Its truly a work of sublime art.
The thing is, he was actually buried facing west
(SPOILER WARNING) If I remember correctly Hosea, Lenny and Tilly are talking about how they want to be buried when they're gone. Hosea says that he want to be buried with friends, Lenny agrees (foreshadowing much) and then Hosea asks Arthur, which replies that he wants to be buried facing West. In the end Charles actually buries Arthur facing West, like he wanted. But the fact that he dies facing a rising sun is still incredibly poetic and beautiful.
14:26 The sunrise signifies that Arthur's death started a new era, and ended the gunslinger era.
John was clean up crew and Jack is ushering in the prohibition age. From there they’ll likely connect gta and rdr to make it full circle. They already put John in gta online as a grandfather option if I’m not mistaken.
@@A_name_is_a_name you are correct, but I feel that if we are going in to the age of orginized crime of the 20's and 30's it would need to be a new IP in my opinon, if we get a red dead 3 i think it should be at the hieght of the wild west of the 1870s and 80s
@@true_shermanator1129 Y’all have no idea what you’re talking about & are demanding a prequel of the prequel and it would ruin the entire story put in place. As well the prohibition age wasn’t organized crime entirely but the entire story is about organized crime & would connect GTA universe with RDR. Think moonshining route & “lawless” (w/ Tom Hardy) setting. Also forgetting the World War Jack may get to be a part of & the weapons you can use deriving from that setting.
They’ve done the wild west desert and backwoods bayou, it’s time for the Appalachian country. It works perfectly for connecting the two universes & ending the two legacy titles with a 3 & 6.
Anyhow, a prequel of the prequel is the worst idea possible in all of cinematography history. Not trying to be rude but that’s just my opinion on it overall.
@@A_name_is_a_name no rdr 3 doesn't really need to be a prequel to the prequel, could be a separate story with a very loose tie in to the others, and the new IP i agree with the Appalachian country setting, being a moonshiner or what not, but i would love to see the transition of what seems like decent lawmen in rdr 2 and im assume rdr (i havent played it) to the very corrupt police of the Gta franchise (we saw a little bit of that in rdr 2, but in what ever story comes with that new game it becomes more apparent or something
@@A_name_is_a_name Johns been a selectable ancestor since the first game. You can also choose Niko Belic if im not mistaken in GTA V online.
That’s awfully optimistic of him to think we’ll be playing Red Dead Redemption 3 within 10 years.
exactly what i thought. i was like "yeah right dude add another 10" lol
Who knows, maybe GTA 6 will be better, or maybe a complete remake of rdr1
No! Please let something die while it's good. Because of people like that we keep getting watered down movies and games. Make a new game, this story is finished. There are millions of good ideas waiting to be discovered.
There will never be another red dead redemption...they can barely make gta 6 lmao
Honestly if it was between RDR 3 and GTA 6 - - I’d much rather RDR 3.. considering most people play GTA for the “Sandbox” feel instead of the story.
Should have shown him the opening in the snow as well that was incredible!
The first shot of Arthur, looking up to Dutch, masterpiece scene. We need a part two of him reacting to RDR2
YES!
I love how the opening has the Quentin Tarantino vibe
I know, right!
He should have played the whole game. Everything is perfect!
7:53 he's right everyone in that frame played a major role in the story
Especially Jack, 15 years later.
"I thought this was a pg game" was the greatest. Being a huge rockstar fan I love seeing people react to how they really are 😭😭
🤣🤣🤣 hahaha hope all is well!
Non english speaker here, whats a pg ?
@@bySaaqs Pg means Parental Guidance, basically meaning this cannot be watched or played by children without a parent next to them
I wish so badly y’all showed him the scene with the nun at the train station.. one of the most powerful parts of that game
that shit had me bawling bro
sadly not everyone got to saw that scene
Or the one with Colm tortouring Athur, or the mission Goodbye, dear friend or even the start, or... OR GUARMA.....BRO THIS GAME IS JUST TOO GOOD,
I shed a tear when Arthur said he was afraid. I was afraid for him. Such a beautifully written story and character
@@VANAKKAMGAMERS I didn't know about the nun in my first playthrough and it pisses me off that I never met her
7:48 imagine if he knew that 15 years later, in the first game, the little kid would actually kill the agent with a shotgun...
While fishing
@@eds1942 Well... duck hunting lol I had to be that guy.
@Mr. Obama Yes it was definitely foreshadowing, but Ross was duck hunting when Jack killed him. The foreshadowing was that when Ross first met Jack and when he last met Jack was by a river.
Different Agent, that’s Agent Milton. Jack kills Agent Ross.
@@Rude_Boi It still started and ended at a river :-)
9:00, if you play the actual game. There’s a cool little detail that I noticed where Arthur reaches for his gun when they walk away, but stops himself knowing that Jack is there. And it makes it even better in the epilogue when John gets into a shootout infront of Jack as a young teenager, which still leaves him pretty traumatized.
Who missed the video about this 13:04 check Javier gun not pointing at Arthur. The man who was Javier voice said it was his idea, cos by the story Jav respected Arthur soo much that even his loyalty is with Dutch he wont point gun at Arthur cos he is like a brother to him. U know a game good when even the voice actors put their hearth in the story.
yeah
Sucks knowing we had to take him in in rdr1
nope. in the last frame before the pinkertons fire a shot, Javier is pointing at them
My pick for a scene that should've been reacted to: Arthur and the nun on the train station, that deliver on the "I'm afraid" is unparalleled
Bruh that shit gets me every time
Should have let the diagnosis scene go on until Arthur walks all the way down the street and sees the buck (hopefully)
@@ImpressionismFTW
same in the first scene... they should've showed the part when he is walking away from the farm
Still drop a tear every time when I play the game and see that scene.. I love it but it so emotionally
Actually it's "I'm afraid" but I also think they should have showed him
i can definitely tell this guy really loves this game. once he starts playing it he is absolutely gonna love the experience. i can tell he'll adore the characters, music, and mission settings. and fun fact: very few of the missions have scripted weather. a lot of the earlier missions take place at whatever time you engage them but certain story missions like the last one just cuts to the appropriate time.
sad he got spoiled tho
The fact that there's few scripted weather segments in missions makes the whole thing feel more real, as in Arthur could go and do these missions at any time. Morning, Afternoon, Night etc.
Oh nice, that's really interesting!
i mean who dosent love this story. cant fin anyone who didnt cry at Arthur Dying with high honor
wOw so interest! Much so interest!
The way he explained everything… he made it more interesting and easy to understand! You can hear the love he has to what he does!
He's definitely a great addition to the reactors. We need more of him!
You can tell this guy is a pro at what he does, im impressed 👏
He should make the rdr movie, I’d pay to watch that
Bro your pfp is literally my home screen rn
@@redhoodarkham5568 well then he’d have to play trough both at least a few times. idc who directs a rdr movie no matter how talented they are, it’s important that they know every aspect of the world, the characters, the story and crucial details to pull it of. lots of love adaptations of things gets ruined because whoever is in charge don’t always know a lot about the material.
@@Jonas-xl4wg god?
@@Goofy_trousers your Home Screen is literally my pfp
His explanation for the scene when Arthur meets Agent Milton and the camera positioning is pretty interesting and something I did not notice at all before but shows how Rockstar puts subtle but effective detail into scenes of the game.
The fact that he can tell it’s an important scene without him knowing anything from RD1 and RDR2, is incredibly well done by rockstar. Foreshadowing done so well that a professional can tell this was an important scene
If you pay attention to Arthur's hand you can notice hes about to kill the two agents when they turn their backs but chooses not to because hes with Jack .
@@thelazyworkersandwich4169 exactly. That part is the connection to Ross’s death. Jack was there for a reason.
8:13 what he's saying about the psychology of camera angles can also be shown during gameplay, the book "Drawing Basics and Videogame Art" by Solarski talks about a particular game that does it better than any other game in its time. A little game called Shadow of the Colossus.
I would love to see him do an entire playthrough of the game

Milton: I'm gonna be just fine
For me the Red Dead Redemption is the greatest game ever made. Arthur Morgan is one of the best character someone get along in a long run even after finishing the game. RDR2 is on another level of gaming.
No way they didnt show the Braitwaite mansion raid
Yea i am little disappointed to that was a top tier scene bro
Or the “I’m afraid” line Arthur gives the nun. That was Oscar worthy shit
there's literally hundreds of scenes that they could've showed. almost all of them are outstanding.
I'm extremely disappointed they didn't show the drunken bar scene with Lenny
Or, "Yeah...just me.", then American Venom starts playing
I liked that the filmmaker give important ideas of all the cinematic and executions of this game. The more he pointed them out, the more I appreciated this masterpiece game.
Not including the execution of O'Driscoll was a big miss. That scene where he's about to get hanged is some of the best visual storytelling I've seen in a videogame. Great scene
Also the scene in the last mission where John talks to Micah before Micah starts shooting at John
I’ll say it a billion times the little foreshadowing when Arthur explains to hosea in chapter 2 he wants to die facing the rising sun in a little camp conversation to finding out that’s how he actually dies is just pure perfection
As a classically trained screenwiter & director I can say that William was 100% spot on with everything he said during the whole video and the capability of explaining everything in the terms how untrained people will understand each point he gives has to be applauded! Well done my man!
Can i ask what you think about metal gear series?
except the part where the camera zoomed in to arthur when the injection happened.....thats t just to cut out the animation of his sleeve being pushed up....its a common game trope to save money and time
@@mniakan3544 I would love to delve deep and tell my opinions, but I have only played one MGS game when I was a kid and it was one of those which are shot from up.
I can try and read the lore a bit if you want, so I can give even screenwriters opinion about the series story/difficulties for writers within it to give some feedback/opinions 😅
@@sandyk9300 Yes, it is. But just it's a common trope in videogames and as you said, easy way to save money and cash, so it is in cinema. It's called reaction shot terminology wise and just like name implies it shows the reaction rather than action since we know what the action is.
Or did I get wrong part of the video as I assume you're speaking of the tuberculosis diagnosis scene? 🤔
@@Joni_Tarvainen that’s okay but they are good games if you have the time for it
Another great thing about this game is just how real-life the horses and the wildlife feels. Horses movements are spot on.
Pretty annoying to control sometimes, but I guess I prefer the realism to easy movement
Yea I love that like all the little noises from wildlife are an actual animal you can track down in game. Frogs, birds, elk etc it's amazing
Yeah they used mocap for the horses
"Great horse graghics...."
Fence post: you better walk circles around me.
You forgot to mention the best part, horse's balls shrink if its cold lol
Now he's explained the reasons behind everything they do cinematically, that explains why I bawled my eyes out at the end of this game
6:33 while he talks about what a scene can do with rain and all that, but did anyone see the horse was not properly feed and maintained as well as Arthur himself.
"This is cinema"
YOU'RE GODDAMN RIGHT
Would love to see him react to the Uncharted & The Last of us series and also Ghost of Tsushima.
He will go crazy on Ghost of Tsushima, when playing I got a fell of waching a Interactive film since the first 5 seconds of gameplay ...
God of War would be a solid one as well.
Death stranding too...
So basically have him react to Ps exclusives
@@TheShakan973 well they are the best exclusives 😉
id love to see his reaction when he found out that these scenes can happen at any time of day, just depends on when you do them (for the most part, a handful are scripted)
Played through the game 3 times but I still teared up at the Arthur death scene in this video. That shit hits so hard. That and when he thanks his horse.
When "Stand Unshaken" plays for the first time and "That the way it is" shows how to blend gameplay and cinematography well. Rockstar most cinematic game remains Max Payne III but Red Dead Redemption 2 is where they managed to balance their cinematic exp. with their gameplay orientation. Also, screw Red Dead Online!
the red dead online rp servers is the only thing I enjoy about it, but sadly im on console
It would be a great online game if rockstar actually added content to it and stopped pumping all their resources into gta online
Maypayne 3 rocks. thats by far the most cinematic game they have done and the gameplay of maxpayne3 is super satisfying.
MAX PAYNE3 was in my opinion the GREATEST 3rd person shooter I've ever played but RDR2 was prob the most cinematic and the greatest story I've ever got to play
“I can't quite remember just what guided me this way”
I’m always happy when someone who isn’t as familiar with gaming can see how it is truly an art form.
This fella knows his shit and I love how invested in this he got! This is a person that LOVES his craft and loves to see others do it well. Loved listening to his commentary during his viewing of this absolutely magnificent game!
you should've showed him the scene with Sister Calderon, where Arthur says "I'm afraid"
one of the best cutscenes in the whole game
As an aspiring filmmaker, I have played throught this story so many times and always enjoyed it! It should be an inspiration for any storyteller out there
And yet there are still people who believe that video games can't be "art", when they absolutely can....perhaps even better than any other medium since you can spend so much more time with the cast and getting to understand them better.
I've seen idiots saying assassins creed games has better acting than rdr2 lol.
@@gamester512 Red Dead wouldn't be as impactful if it wasn't a video game. If you really invest into it, it takes your life over, you hunt to feed the gang, camp out in the wilderness looking for legendary pelts... @@Based1889 AC is favourite game series but no new AC game tops RDR2
This, Witcher 3, and some of the MGS games have incredible storytelling. As the comments above mentioned, games can 100% be art and deliver a story in a uniquely impactful way.
Should have shown him the "I'm Afraid" scene, that scene is phenomenal.
Having studied film making, read many articles, books and interviews about film making in my youth, even made some amateur movies, I was subconciously aware of what was going on in this game. Man the scene with Ross, Arthur, Jack and Milton is amazing when you realize that when Jack and Ross FIRST MET was at the side of a river, and the final time they met was without their friends and…at the side of a river
I feel like knowing the ending makes this game better because Arthur's whole story is based on him knowing that he's goin to die anyway so he should instead focus on helping others. My second playthrough was better than my first and his death still held the same impact as the first

He was so excited to see Lenny, I wish they could have shown one of his missions, or maybe even Charles
„Oh we got a black dude in this joint“
As soon as he sees Lenny.
Let’s not tell him how Lenny will end like in Red dead …
Probably for the best
Don't worry, they still got Charles tho lol. Well, he's half black but still..
@@corneliusquincydavenportic1913 I am wondering how is reaction will look like, when he sees the Braithwaites Manor…
You mean just like pretty much every single member of that gang?
You should really get this guy to cover The Last of Us 2!
Yessss
I loved the analysis and the humor! I learned a lot about cinema and laughed a lot too!
love this game so much, and i think part of the reason why i love it so much is because i too share a love for cinema. this game truly does an amazing job at making you feel like you’re watching a movie & feeling like you’re in the movie as well. this game has such a special place in my heart.
We need a part 2 with this guy! This game has so many amazing scenes, it's impossible to put all of them into one video...
I Would love to see him react to scene on a train station when Arthur talks with sister, it's a slow but Soo powerfull scene
I can’t believe they didn’t show one of the last missions of the Wapiti attack on the oil station - the whole at the start with running down the hill was amazing .. an absolute masterpiece
When you can learn so many key details about the story (even down to the main characters death) and still wanna play it, you know it’s an amazing story/game
I think RDR2s scenes are some of the best I have seen
The scene where the gang approaches Braithwaite manor in the dead of of knight to get Jack back should have been shown here.
Great video dude, the Harlem shake joke had me crying
🤣🤣🤣🤣 I appreciate you Max!
I learned so much about film production in this 15 min video. That was awesome.
Rdr2 is the best game ever
Change my mind
Not even Tom Cruise can complete the mission of changing your mind
Hopefully that won't be the case in the near future. The game is an absolute masterpiece, but I've got faith in Rockstar.
@@johassan8282 I don't, after seeing the remastered gta games
I literally cant
God of War and TLOU2 are better
This dude’s awesome, bring him back!
Studied film for a little bit in school and the cinematography, score, lighting and how Red Dead 2 is shot is fantastic, beautiful at times. The writing, the performances, emotion in the voices, everything was fantastic. So many details in every shot and scene, really was "every frame a painting".
I loved seeing him react to this it’s cool to see a insight from someone in tue movie industry
