Hi Ben, I've only just discovered you! But hurrah, a man after my own heart. I'm a big fan of David Austin roses. I've around 20 so far, in a not very big garden. Its reassuring to know I'm not alone! I was taking all the leaves off a lot of them due to blackspot so it's good to know i was doing the right thing. But I now realise I should be watering them more as well, thank you.
Worth noting you can apply powder sulphur on ghe deaseased ppant to stop it from spreading. Its totally safe for the environment but will stop your plants from completely defoliating due to fungal infections
Thank you for stressing the need for air circulation around and through rose bushes. Sometimes I see bushes so dense that I can foresee trouble without a crystal ball. Having lived in New Orleans and Austin, TX, I know the importance of mulching to moderate soil temperatures, especially for young plants with delicate root systems.

Thank you for this. I also find if they're well fed with the much i.e. I use well rotted chicken manure, this keeps them healthier and more able to fight off these problems😊

Thank you for the video. Black spot and powdery mildew have been my main nemesis lately. I live two blocks away from the ocean in California. We receive a lot of moisture in the air, in our particular microclimate. Also, my roses, only receive morning and afternoon or afternoon and evening sun. Depending on which side they’re on. I’m aware that some varieties tolerate partial shade more than others. But, with our torrential rains earlier this season and constant overcast days for weeks, it’s been a real challenge this year.
Great video. I’m watching from Louisiana. I’m so glad you mentioned the deformed rose bud because I just so happen to find one today on my David Austin, generous gardener that I’ve had for a year but just moved it out of a pot and into the ground and more sunlight so it’s been struggling to adjust and just when the leaves are starting to look nice and green I find the deformed bud. You are are very helpful and love watching your videos.

This might explain why my Phyllis Bide bought potted end of March got sooo much blackspot now: She had a few leaves with spots before I had to go away for a week and I hadn’t been watering properly in relation to the massive burst into so many blooms... I defoliated one third of her now (one third is still intact with no blackspot, another third is partly black spotted). Would you recommend taking all black spotted leaves off to save the last third that is still intact? I did not want to stress her too much by doing that, hence just tried one third. Hi Ben, thank you for this useful info. Would you say that watering with the long lance is a good watering method (s you were originally shown) if aimed correctly at the base and you stand over a rose for at least a minute?
Also, would it be possible to show us your irrigation system please ? Do you use the soaker hose type that drips out of the small rotating heads that spin water around?
What about using a water meter? I have mine in large pots but only water when the probe shows water leaning towards dry. It ends up needing water about once a week. I push down about 8 inches. Should I keep it consistently around moist and not let it get a little drier between watering? I never let it get into the “red zone” which is dry. I worry about overwatering in pots
Plants will die and suffer much faster through lack of water than underwatering -never go into the dry zone lol
Thank You Ben. I have just realised that I have been watering completely wrongly. I am going to remove the hose sprayer and just use the end of the hose to water at the base of the plant. Most of my roses are okay for black spot at the moment but I have one in it's original container and bought last year that has had blackspot since it started growing months ago. It's a Harkness climbing rose called 'Bridge of Sighs' and it's got barely any leaves left but has flowers on it. Do you think some varieties are just susceptible to it no matter how good your husbandry is? I'm not sure whether to just get rid of it as it looks so sickly for this early on in the season.
Here in the South West UK we have a hosepipe ban. I put in a drip irrigation system last year but cannot use it, 😂, so back to the watering can. The only rose I really have problems with is Zepherin Drouhin. I do as you suggest and do good husbandry but know it is a shortcoming and just live with its’ problems. It was planted before I understood about disease resistance and all my later roses seem to have that built into them, fortunately. I don’t know how we in the South West are going to keep our gardens going this year. It may well become the norm so have to rethink!! Thank you for the informative vid.
What volume of water do you harvest ? I now hold around 5000 lts of water any one time
@@the_gardenerben I have a 6,000 litre rainwater harvesting water tank which supplies all my domestic water as well as water butts in the garden. We are going through a dry spell at present with no rain on the horizon so having to be canny. I still have water in my butts but many people have already emptied theirs for this year!!
@@helenyoung8012 it’s crazy considering how wet the winter was it seemed to rain non-stop, but yes, two of my 1000 L tanks ran dry, but luckily we had rain the top then back up again
Ugh. My Gertrude Jekyll constantly suffers blackspot. The only rose of dozens. Every year it’s plagued. :(
Deep mulching of its root zone and focused watering will help especially if it’s a climber

Hi Ben! Love your videos! This was so helpful, especially early in the season. I'll be changing my watering techniques asap to ensure my roses are being watered properly. Any suggestions on how to address powdery mildew on roses? I live in BC Canada near the coast and have it on 50% of my 46 rose plants.
It’s hard when you’re in a humid area , but less is more try pruning harder and space out your canes keeping your plants nice and open and avid heavy companion planting
Hi Ben could you give me advice on growing a Lady of Shalott rose. It is about 5 years old but I've never had many blooms per year. This year it has grown about 8 long, ( 4 foot plus) thin stems with hardly any leaves at the top and the leaves it has got have curled. It has just a few flower buds. Should I leave it or cut it back to strengthen the stems?
I would appreciate any help.

Up to you you can ether prune it now, remove the leaves or leave or be and have another go come winter
Hi Ben thank you for this advice, I am only new to growing roses and have bought 8 from DA, I live in Manchester UK and have them in pots, some are sitting in the borders as my husband couldn’t dig holes for them this year due to his health, them don’t have saucers under them, will they be okay without . TIA
If you can get sources under them it will help as long as the are watered well they will be fine
Thank you Ben, not sure if you have Japanese Beetles in UK but in Ontario Canada they decimate roses in a feeding frenzy with no predator to eat them because they are not native to Canada. I've tried to put down nematodes and spraying with soap solution, neem oil, hand plucking is tedious and hard to reach them high up on plants. Any suggestions how to keep them off my roses? If you don't have them there you don't know how lucky you are! Nasty little munchers make black spot and aphids like a walk in the park.
Personally I don’t have them but have had thrips which do similar damage keep up the good work

Question…difference between “own root” vs “grafted root” in particular with David Austin Roses. Do you have any “grafted root” roses?
Looking into buying David Austin Roses this year and unsure if I should get grafted roses. I live in zone 5-7. Thanks and appreciate the videos.
