    "Palette cleanser" is an excellent description for Tottering by Gently! That's exactly what it is. It's one of my favourites. It just fits in everywhere and throws off the rain which is necessary in the South West UK!! I love it.

    This channel is exactly what I have been looking for for almost thirty years of gardening. Roses are a long term investment and a relationship, like with a pet (they outlive most pets) and unless you have space to trial them, it is about gathering facts as well as feeling an emotional connection. These videos are really helping me choose another rose during the bare root season. Thank you 😊

    Thank you Ben, I love your enthusiasm. I have two Ladies of Shallot growing on either side of our entrance pathway. I'm surprised that you said no scent because here (Australia), she has a beautiful light clean fragrance. I'm not a connoisseur of fragrances but she has an 'haa' scent. Lifts the heart. 😊

    I love the roses and your videos, they are very helpful. But it made me laugh so much scrolling along the timeline at the bottom to come across "Rolled Dangle", a new DA rose?!! Whoever writes the captions must never have heard of Roald Dahl! More seriously, my latest DA roses, planted bare root today are Sceptered Isle and The Country Parson. They join several other of your favourites; I have a special affection for Kew Gardens, Scarborough Fair and Silas Marner, but I love them all. Thank you Ben

    What a treat 🤍💛🧡🤗Watching these beautiful comparison videos is a balm for the soul. 😊 It's so interesting to see the subtle and not so subtle differences in one colour group. I really appreciate it and start fancying the idea of a yellow cream grouped area in the garden now ☺️ (a yellow/cream corner, a pink corner...) just that I do not have the garden/space for it ☺️ (yet 😉) but for indulging in the beauty, these videos are the next best thing! Thank you, @the_gardenerben! 🤗

    Thanks Ben for another great review. I have Grace growing in my garden in Nottingham and it has been up to 5 feet tall this year and in bloom constantly from mid June. Also, for me, it does have a medium tea fragrance. I guess different growing conditions and different noses will lead to contrasting reviews but one thing we agree on is that it is a very beautiful rose 😊

    Loved this review. These roses are my favourite colours of all the rose colours available. I started my collection with Lady of Shallot, then Bathsheba, then Roald Dahl, Bring Me Sunshine, Grace and my newest one is Dannahue. It’s hard to pick a favourite I just love them all. I would really like a Wollerton Old Hall but don’t think I can fit it in. I noticed you didn’t review Bathsheba. What do you think of her? 🧡💛

      Hi Robert, what do you think of Dannahue compared with Roald Dalh? I am looking for a rose similar to Roald Dalh but with fragrance...

    • @robertarthur6470
      @robertarthur6470 Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@ewenthomas1743 I think that they’re two quite different roses but also have lots of things in common. Both of mine are very fragrant, both or prolific bloomers and repeat bloomers, both seem relatively black spot resistant but they’re different colours. Their fragrances are very different. I find that Roald Dahl’s is heavier but lovely and what I think of as a traditional rose fragrance. Dannahue’s fragrance is still fairly strong, but citrusy and really rather nice. Dannahue doesn’t smell like any other rose I have.

    • @ewenthomas1743
      @ewenthomas1743 Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@robertarthur6470 Thank you very for your response. I thought that Roald Dalh was not very fragrant but if it is, it has everything I want so I will go for it. How would you describe the color of Dannahue?

    • @robertarthur6470
      @robertarthur6470 Před 7 měsíci +1

      My Roald Dahl was planted as a bare root a year ago so is still a young plant. I’m really looking forward to seeing it next Summer. It had around five flushes of blooms this year. In the first flush the blooms seemed much more fragrant than the subsequent ones. I could smell the fragrance from quite a distance. Dannahue has beautiful colour blooms. I would describe them as a soft but not insipid yellow colour. The buds have red flashes on them. It’s a really beautiful rose.

  • @Olomoucboy
    @Olomoucboy Před 10 měsíci

    Great stuff as always, thank you, Ben. Just one thing - all my DA roses grow much taller then mentioned. For example Crocus Rose, this year reaching nearly 2 metres! Is that normal? I'm in the Czech Republic. Also, my Lady of Shallot definitely does have a nice fragrance - tea with a hint of grapefruit, I would say. Happy gardening! 😉🌹

  • @ewenthomas1743
    @ewenthomas1743 Před 7 měsíci

    Thank you Ben for this very nice comparative. I love Roald Dalh but it is not really fragrant. Is there any other David Austin that look and perform similar but with a stronger fragrance? Maybe Dannahue? Also, as Crown Princess Margareta have been discontinued, what would be her best alternative in your opinion? Maybe Bring me sunshine?

    • @the_gardenerben
      @the_gardenerben  Před 7 měsíci

      I think you’ve answered both of your own question is there yes, a substitute for a Roald Dahl with a much more fragrance would certainly be dannahue, and a very good alternative to Crown. Princess Margarita would certainly be a Bring me Sunshine, although mine is in full sun and I know Crown Princess Margarita does quite well in partial shade.
