I had a BMW 2002 back in the 70's. We took the valve cover off and it made a popping sound from the release of the cylinder vacuum - it didn't even have a gasket! It didn't need one, as it was machined to exact tolerances; you just dripped some oil and torqued it down. Amazing car!

Now put 300 000 km more on your BMW and then come and talk to me about its reliability.

Only thing holding back the E90/92 is the infotainment system, it’s easy to go classic with a classic dash/radio/cd system. Ugly and outdated screens are a hard sell, like a clash of tastes. I know this guy hates bimmers but for all their faults and quality control issues they are one of the best sports saloon/sedans on the market. I can jump into any BMW and instantly know what to expect, how to drive it and have now major adjustments to deal with. Put me in a Merc I’m lost, put me in an Audi I’d fall asleep.

This bmw sat for 7 years plus 1 year in my possession cuz i was busy and lazy.. it started, sounded like crap and misfired... did an oil change, reset the computer, changed the tires, and it started up smoothly like i just parked it there yesterday... and has not given me any problem except the front seat driver seat not going back anymore and the fuse for the radio going out. Compared to my 335i, this 330i drives so much more comfortable and feels like a cloud in comparison. This is my third bmw and I am tied to the brand

I had a 2002 E46 BMW 320i. I had it for 6 years. In Finland, one of the toughest places for a car to be. From freezing winters, wet seasons, and a hot summer, to potholes and gravel roads. And I never had an issue. I gave it hell. I regularly blasted it 200kmh on the highway. I drifted it. I launched it. I rev'd it.
And I only ever had one coolant leak that took 50€ to fix. I then sold it to a friend, and we got a BMW specialist mechanic shop (Not licensed and expensive, more of an enthusiast shop) to look at it and suggest any major fixes. There were two minor oil leaks. An air sensor that needed cleaning. Rotten fittings on the exhaust pipe. 500€ to fix all that was wrong, and to change the oil and filters.
It's never had a major repair for 24 years and 230 000km. And it still doesn't need one. And it has been driven rough and hard, in one of the most brutal conditions.

We have always loved our E90 (2006 330i) and it's the nicest car I've ever owned. It does absolutely everything I tell it to do. Yes, we had to replace the composite transmission cover at 139K miles and we've replaced the ignitors (easier than on our Toyota Sienna!), but ECS Tuning and such have great parts and since we've got the tools, we do a lot ourselves. (QuickJack has rocked for all our cars!) I'd love to bring it by sometime and see what codes you could find, though.
There's always something that needs repair on most of our vehicles because the newest thing we own is 2008 and we've got 7 cars/trucks and 4 bikes. The kiddos use our vehicles so they don't need a new car payment, so having a fleet actually saves us a pile 'o car payments. Still, something needs an inspection every month and nothing is faster than our VW Jetta VR6 but the GSXR. I know you don't love VWs, but that thing is amazing with almost 600hp to the wheels. Still, it sure costs more to maintain than our Tacoma, so you have a point.

I had a '93 E34 that I absolutely loved, and while every maintenance thing was expensive ($3K for brakes), it never broke down or required anything other than routine maintenance for wear and tear. It was quick, sporty, and comfortable, and did wonders for my single lifestyle. After marrying, I parted with that car and got a 2007 E90, which was a rocket on a roller skate and a ball to drive, but required over $8000 of repairs TWICE (turbo and fuel pump) during the three years that I leased (fortunately) it. My parents both owned Mercedes and wrote checks for those cars like a bad habit, so when the lease on the E90 came up, I turned it in, bought a Nissan Armada that I still own today and vowed never to buy another German car in my life. So.. as a BMW owner for over 20 years, I have to agree with your list for the most part.
I've owned a 1972 BMW 2002tii, still have the motor, after a MAJOR rear end accident in that car I bought a 1968 2000ti and swapped the TII motor into it. The motor had 450k before the oil pump failed.
Next I've owned a 733i, 1983, last year they had a manual transmission in the US, that car being big and long, the handling felt like a smaller car for sure.
A suggestion for the last model of great BMW's is the E36, especially the M3. I've owned one of these and it lasted to 450k miles, at that point the interior started nickel and dime-ing me to death with all the plastic interior parts, the motor was still running strong.
Great video, keep up the great work!

None of the BMWs Mr. Kilmer recommends are practical as daily drivers today. Yes, I'd buy any of these as weekend toys, if I had the extra space.
Good daily drivers - E46 or E9x 328i with N52K engine, manual transmission. These easily go 200K miles with a bit of cooling system and suspension maintenance. The difficult part is to find one that hasn't been trashed by previous owner(s).
The plastic intake manifolds of these cars, contrary to the claim in this video, are practically indestructible as they typically outlast the M54 and N52 engines.
The $5,000 dollar diagnostic tool is useless for these cars, but there are dealer level diagnostic tools available for almost no money. The key is to figure out which codes are current and relevant.
