My problem is when a dishonest mechanic wants to fix a problem that doesn't exist. Example: replacing belts, bearings, tie rods, brake pads etc. when they are still in good working order. Many mechanics/dealers often recommend unnecessary repairs so they can make money.

I own a 2011 Kia Sorento with over 250k on it now. Besides minor work due to wear and tear that I have done in the garage at home, zero issues. So many cars and trucks have passed through my possession over the years, and I am still absolutely surprised the old Kia Sorento has been the most reliable and durable. In my experience, every car brand will have serious issues with their car lines from time to time. And none of them will own up to the issues and properly take care of their customers. Despite doing your best research, buying a vehicle is unfortunately a very expensive roll of the dice - and a game most of us have to play.

It also had a problem where it would go into "limp" mode sometimes under boost when passing another car. They gave us the run around time and time again. Never fixed that car. And surprise surprise when I check the oil and filter on these brand NEW cars, metal! Hyundai and Kia are shooting themselves in the foot by having to change out an engine instead of just giving out a few more 5k oil changes, instead of trying to be cheap and make them 7,000 miles out!

I have a 2019 Toyota Camry. The owner's manual says that the car can be driven 10,000 miles between oil changes, and they recommend oil changes at 10K miles. While the oil is still pretty clean looking at 5,000 miles, I change it at that point to be safe. I won't get to 6K miles before I change the oil. I know Camrys are awesome cars mechanically, and can run almost forever, but I don't trust 10K oil change intervals. Also, the oil life meter comes on around 4,400 to 4,600 miles after an oil change. So that is strange as well if the manual recommends 10K miles.

Cars are always good for a suprise. I live in Germany where most people have a different view on cars as Scotty or Americans have. But Toyota is seen as a reliable brand here as well. But for decades most Germans thought their brands were the best in the world, while american were unreliable gashogs. Well some are this way.
I was the first one in our familiy, in fact the whole street, maybe the whole village, who bought an american car in the 90s. It was a 1996 Jeep Cherokee XJ, produced in the US but for europeuan market. And turbocharged Diesels were very popular these days. So it had a 2.5 Litre 115 HP turbo diesel from VM (italian motor company) which suprisingly had the same torque as the usual 4.0 litre six cylinder gas.
I bought the Jeep in 1999 and drove it for 21 years. Finally the turbocharger broke down. I sold it, because diesel engines are now very expensive (680 Euro tax per year!) and it was not easy in the last years to get spare parts.
I will never forget this go-anywhere american masterpiece. I drove it from Germany to the Trollstigen pass, from north to south Germany, used it for chopped wood, plaster stones, moving...
All my friends bought 2 or 3 different cars (mostly German brands) in that time, as the cars broke down or make them unsatisfied. Even our family Mercedes Benz did not survived 19 years.
    That Jeep never burned oil.

I did have the A/C compressor replaced last year but living in Florida I need it ice cold. Still looks great. On jeeps, the unified power module tends to have bad terminal mounting. It may look like each component is properly plugged in ... but internal terminals often slip downward and barely touch the spade lugs of "plugged-in" components. Intermittent and/or high resistance connections result and are hard to locate and correct. Check the back side of the module for wiring terminals that are not snug on the relevant component lugs.

Also they seem obsessed about changing the oil almost after every journey (see many comments on here), rather than sticking to the manufacturers' intervals like any sane person would. Probably because they use crappy synthetic blend oil rather than proper full synthetic. Ho hum.

I’ve owned 3 KIAs. Always changed the oil at 5K. Always had the 2.4 liter engine. I test drove the 2.0 liter & didn’t like it. Never had a problem with the 2.4 liter & they didn’t use any oil but never drove longer than 75K & then traded-in. The service is not as good as it used to be. Overall KIA is not that bad but could be better if they focused more on their customers. Out of the 3 vehicles I owned, one wheel sensor went bad. No other issues.

Interesting... Though Kia/Hyundai has like 3 completely different 2.4 liter engines and 2.0 engines from 2004-2015 or so. Oldest, Sirius is Mitsubishi engine. And two later, Beta (2.0) and Delta (2.4 an2.7) are solid quality engines as well.
The problematic ones are Theta models, that come in both 2.0 and 2.4 liter, and are completely new desing. Nu engine also has 2.0 variant, that's been subject to recall.

Scotty, Here is a idea to have proof that the transmission has been opened and worked on. Take some good blue enamel paint and paint a long mark on where the transmission seals are on the housing. If the marks are broken the transmission housing has been opened. Tell your Hundya owner to do that before he takes it back for another transmission repair. Then check it for him.
Another thing you can do right now is look at if the bolts have been worked on.
