You sir, are (once again) a life saver! I thought I had just bought a $500 paperweight until I saw this video!
My friend... just got the CM3 last night. You're my hero! Thank you so much for this video. You're always putting out such great information!!
Hold up, let me afford a Virpil before I fix it 😅
its really not that Bad its well worth the price when considering how much people are upselling Thrustmaster Gear
OMG this was perfectly timed. I just today unwrapped my MongoosMT-50 CM3 and thought it was broken. Then I googled for a fix and your video was the top result. And it was just posted yesterday! Wow! Thanks for staying on top of things. If you handed posted this I don't know how I would have resolved this.
Just got mine yesterday; thank you for posting this video, as this was exactly the problem I was having!
I recently got a VPC CM3 and Constellation Alpha and I finally got around to trying to understand why so many buttons weren't working in ED! Thank you so much for this video!
Great vid, and well explained!!
But if you are running Windows 11 and have a VPC with more than 32 buttons as Louis Erickson wrote further down (may 2022) do this:
Go into VPC Configuration Tool -> PROFILE and check the box under Device side [V] Split by 32 buttons.
You now have (in Windows Joystick) VPC Panel #1 buttons 1-32 and same VPC Panel #1 buttons 1-remaining.
So no need anymore for vJoy or Joystick Gremlin :)
Yes. I can confirm that. Got my throttle today (28.10.2022) So if that was removed it is now back
I just ordered over $1k in Virpil hardware. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to figure it out in ED. I literally went DtEA's youtube and just searched the channel. I really like the way you explain stuff.
My Virpil arrives in a week so this is very timely! Preemptively saving me many headaches- Thank you!!!
How long did yours take? I ordered my Throttle and Constellation last week.
@@paraguitarmedic Will be about 6 weeks from order placed to delivery. I think that's the max lead time so depending on your full order and supply it might be shorter.
Excellent dude! Thanks for answering the question!
I'm so glad I came across your channel. My CM3 shows up on Monday (Just in time for Odyssey!), so this info will come in handy!
Thanks, man! The video is really well structured and all information is presented clearly. This will definitely help me out with my upcoming Virpil setup (stick, throttle, pedals and a control panel). I'm planning to daisy chain their Control Panel 2 to CM3 throttle, so this will sure come in handy (just gotta remember to configure them in right order when daisy chainging them)!
Cheers man! I remember when you did your review or unboxing you said you'd do this, really happy! Nice and simple too.
Yeah I just noticed I have not played ED in 2 years. I have Virpil controls and had a friend who just got his and wanted to try ED. I remember that you said something about Virpil controllers. Thank God I found this since I just notice the button issue. So thank you for this information.
Excellent video! This worked perfectly! Also appreciate that you took the time to explain the issue. I can't believe that Windows only supports 32 buttons per device 😅
I initially tried the same thing, but in the end settled with a different strategy.
My idea is using as much of each game's default configuration as possible. The (mostly default) keys are bound to buttons on joystick and throttle. This is possible with Joystick Gremlin but I found that this software does not work cleanly with modifier-keys (Shift, Alt, Ctrl), so in the end I used a similar software called JoyToKey, which costs a little money, but in my opinion is also superior in terms of usability.
So now I use only slightly changed default-configs in each game (Elite, Squadrons, Rebel Galaxy Outlaw) and a game-specific JoyToKey profile for each game.
I use JoyToKey to access the higher numbered buttons and switches in Elite. I reads the keypress on your device and remaps it to a keyboard command which it then sends to the game. It was very easy to set up and I didn't have to mess with multiple apps. I have two joysticks and a throttle (Virpil Constellation Alpha, VKB Gladiator-K, and Virpil MongoosT50) connected when I play Elite and it handles all the buttons on them with no problem. Granted, it's not as fancy as Vjoy and Gremlin but it does what I need it to do.
Thank you. Was going nuts trying to get the buttons to work.
Mine turned up yesterday, thanks for posting this. Apparently another method can be to use the Virpil button presses to keyboard outputs, I haven't confirmed this yet, but mapping button presses in the firmware would remove the need to have extra software running.
Looks like the current version of the VPC configurator will do this for you; select the "Split by 32 buttons" checkbox on the profile. This has the VPC software create enough joysticks to define all the buttons on your device. vJoy and Joystick Gremlin (although cool tools!) should not be needed for this any more.
My Mongoose CM3 Throttle shows up as two when set with the "no mode modifier" option. With the default "5 way mode modifier" it creates three joysticks so there are enough buttons for the six press buttons B1-B6 to each register as a different button based on the setting of the Mode rotary switch. Mode 1 B1 gives you a different button press than Mode 2 B1, but you can't see the state of the rotary switch itself directly.
The WarBRD with Constellation Alpha grip fits in one 32-button joystick, barely.
The buttons are also simplified to a more basic set when you use the "split by 32" buttons option. For example, the toggle switches T1-T4 map to one button held down for on, instead of one for on and a different one for off. You can change this in the mapping if you want them, though.
You can also shoot yourself in the foot really good and make things work really, really badly, so save a backup of the profile and be prepared to reset it and try again.
The VPC Test Tool shows all your controllers and exactly which button is being pressed, to help you figure out how each control will show to your programs. It's handy.
You really made my day!!! (night) :D I've struggled to get vJoy working on Win11 with no luck :/ Then I started reading down here. AMAZINGLY easy. "SPLIT BY 32 BUTTONS" works. I only wonder if it would be able to rename it to TWO different controllers like VPC Panel #1A and VPC Panel #1B Thanks again!!!
1 HEADS UP. You will need vjoy and Gremlin in Mech Warrior Online and maybe other games as MWO does not read the VIrpil Rudder. Install vjoy. Use HIDHide to hide the Rudder from MWO, use Gremlin to pass through the Z Axis to vjoy. I use YRot. Assign the other Axes on your Rudder (optional and not necessary.)
I think the Virpil software has an option to circumvent that 32 limitation of windows. (no need for other software) You can see it on support.virpil : the text reads : The optional modifier “Split to virtual device by 32 buttons” allows you to split one joystick device into several virtual 32 buttons each. This will help to use devices with a large number of buttons in games where buttons with numbers over 32 are not visible.
That feature has been removed.
@@DowntoEarthAstronomy oh sh... ...thanks.
@@DowntoEarthAstronomy why on earth would they remove that feature?
Well I don't know, but my guess is that it is so outdated now that it might have given them compatibility problems as Virpil is moving to newer and newer firmware
@@DowntoEarthAstronomy Just letting you know that feature is back! - just got my Virpil and using your videos as a guide -thank you!
Worked perfectly on Virpil T-50 CM3 for E:D, thanks
Needed this video thank you so much! I have loaded some profiles I found for DCS but still had issues I see my devices fully working on the VPC software I was so confused.
Thank you my Dude, a real good Tutorial, like always by You o7
I get the CM3 next Days after long used x56.
I am excided too fly my Ships in the Verse with it and my good old VKB Gunfighter, Kosmosima.
Salute you and Kudos
Thank you! very helpful!
Thank you so much for this mate
Update Virpil software now include to split the controller into 32 button virtual controllers natively no need for either of these to play elite anymore
Thank You, I learned a lot.
if you use a xbox control like me set the controls to default context then edit your controls you can make a very functional controller layout from there, must be set to default context to make it easy then only a few controls need mapping i 99% of the time play with a pad the mouse is good for galaxy map pad for everything else
Alternatively you can install an older firmware on your throttle that still supports splitting the cm2 into virtual devices in the setup tool. That function was removed from the Virpil Firmware around the time they released the aditional panel though, so it might have issues if you use both. You can even freely mix Firmware Version between Stick and Throttle without any issues. 🙂
^^yep
though virpil said in the future they will release a new version of that to split buttons again inside the VPC software.
I had the same issue, it costs me an hour or two, to find out, that the device splitting function is no longer supported. I searched for the most recent version, wich still supports splitting. I took the version VPC Config. tool 200325. I am using a CM2 Throttle btw.
I did that, and on Frontier Pilot SImulator it gets confused by it.
Very useful info, nice one
Hello,
i find the easyest way to solve this problem:
VPS configuration tool --> choose your throttle --> first raw botton u can find: SPLIT BY 32 BUTTONS
You are the best. thank you!!!
Thank you so much
Have you gone through, in any of your videos, what your button mappings look like for you Virpil HOTAS? I just got the Constellation Alpha, but I can't figure out the right mapping for the triggers.
I'd expected to use the dual-stage trigger to control Weapon 1 and then Weapon 1+2, but I realized it doesn't work that way in the mapping.
Thanks!
Where was this video a week ago?! I managed to figure it out, but this would have been great.
Thanks Mate, I was tearing my hair out until I seen this, thank you.
Thank you for the information! Just got my Constellation ALPHA and CM3 a few days ago. Issue I am having: joystick buttons all work fine, none of the buttons on the CM3 seem to respond; I'm able to calibrate the x/y/z axes on it, but there is no response from any of the buttons. I followed your video, downloaded vJoy and Joystick Gremlin (thanks by the way). Anything that I may have missed? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Finally about to dive back into Elite (yeah, Odyssey, I know!) and have a CM2 so this is perfect. I assume that I need to run vjoy and Joystick Gremlin each time I start ED?
Hey buddy. I am having a hard time getting my head around getting the VPC MongoosT-50CM3 Throttle and Constellation Alpha stick setup in Elite. Do you have a profile you could point me too that I could download?
Hi D2EA, my joystick gremlin is only showing up to button 55, you mentioned something called mode dial (I think) to increase yours to 79. How do you do that?
I have over 70 logical buttons in my Virpil profile (all working fine in the Virpil testing application) but Joystick Gremlin seems stuck at only see 68. Any ideas-wondering if there’s some “refresh” in joystick gremlin step I’m missing?
thank you! spent hours trying to figure this out. 31 inouts danm, hopefully windows 11 fixes it
Cannot seem to get the cm3 to work with a 16000m joystick plugged in at the same time. They do not seem to play nice together.
Do we need to set the POVs in vjoy?
I just received my new VPC V.F.X Grip and I have a link error 254 on the p3 slider and p4 dial. Any Ideas? Dents in the table just trying to find anything about it, even on the Virpil website.
NONE of my buttons work, i have the MT50, my mouse, andkeyboard plugedin atm. still no buttons react.
What cable im i suposed to use? Red one or black
is it still necessary? Did not elite released info that they will support device over 100 buttons? I just got CM3 but throttle is not detected
If you change all your hats to POV then you recover 30 out of the 32 missing buttons. I prefer this since I don't have to run an additional software.
nice one, I'm about to set mine up, so may have saved me some trouble!
My issue is that either my PC is not recognizing it or the software is not recognizing it. It the first step where you click on your device, I have no options to click on. My device lights up but will not show up in the config menu.
Okay - I applied this fix but only the default 8 buttons are applying - not the fully 30. Did I miss something here?
OMG YESSS!!!
Wow!
You would think that considering the premium price paid for this (currently waiting for mine to ship) that their software would have a solution so it can fully work in Windows.
To use two third party solutions to resolve a known issue shows a complete lack of understanding functionality.
The only saving grace here is that these are free.
My only issue is the naming of the buttons within ED as knowing which of the two “button 6” did you map... 🙄
Thanks for laying this out. 👍
This is really only a problem with older games like Elite. Newer games work just fine without remapping anything.
@@DowntoEarthAstronomy The way you describe it is that it is an archaic Windows setup issue. So if newer games have a work around perhaps ED can update theirs? Or perhaps Virpil can add that fix to their calibration software to achieve the same results?
Again I keep going back to the cost of the initial hardware that one would assume they know of this and can fix it themselves without relying on two 3rd party apps to get their rigs working properly with all games.
Am I wrong in this expectation?
@@palindari like @EuropaSteve said on the next comment, in the calibration software you can set the buttons to output key presses, so Virpil kinda have. the issue is with the way Windows "sees" the button presses.
@@palindari The problem cannot be fixed by Virpil. Some games communicate directly with devices for inputs, supporting up to 128 buttons. Some games communicate with Windows for inputs, and Windows has a set limit of 32 buttons per device. ED relies on Windows for inputs, so it only sees 32 buttons. The problem can only be fixed by Frontier (or Microsoft).
@@fixitman2174 I would disagree partially. As there is a fix, albeit a work around with third party software. Since this is a known issue, why can't the software be assimilated into the installation software from Virpil as opposed to figuring out this work around. Granted this is an issue with Microsoft and considering they have recently released Flight you would think they would put in a fix considering how many will be putting in flight HOTAS setups with multiple buttons over 32.
Hello fellow simmers, does anybody knows why i cant map anything above key 100 on JG?
I used to be able to get my CM2 to work without vjoy. What happened to the virtual controllers that the VPC Software provided? I see them listed in the software but they are no longer loading it seems.
I did update the firmware trying to troubleshoot an actual button issue (ended up having to get wires replaced internally). So that's what did it. I now don't remember which firmware I had before so I have to go through by trial and error loading the most recent previous edition until I get it to work. I don't like having to go the Joystick Gremlin route. but if I have to, I suppose I will.
Is that a problem specific to Elite Dangerous or is it a thing to do with DCS World also ?
My CM3 should arrive in a month ...
That's elite specific
@@DowntoEarthAstronomy
Thx !
That's good news.
I'm looking into that Link Tool you mentionned in another video.
Looks promizing ;-)
Got my cm3 today, plugged in, opened x plane, got the axises calibration but no buttons. Downloaded the Virpil software, updated the firmware, not it’s not being recognized at all by my computer and nothing is working. What did I do wrong? This is the only Virpil device I have
Virpil's software isn't very intuitive to use. I would suggest watching a few tutorial videos to get familiar with the setup process. You also might want to try hooking it up through a powered USB hub as I know that some people have had issues with their computer's USB port not providing enough power for the device to run stably.
Why is so complex to Elite Dangerous to be able to manage 128 buttons instead of 128 ? DCS is working fine with my VPC and even the pre release of star citizen alfa ! So I don't understand why and will wait until elite will be able to manage modern VPC hardware... It's a shame...
I got this software and button mappings to work... But this is interfering with my Xbox Elite controller, it doesn't work with this active. Anybody got a clue why this is happening? I like to use the controller for SRV.
I found the solution on a Steam thread:
Go into device manager.
Look under "Human Interface Devices", and notice your XBOne controller is not found.
Continue to do this next step until your XBOne controller is found:
1. Double Click on a "HID Game Controller" to open a menu
2. Click on the "Driver" tab
3. Select "Update" driver
Eventually it will have found your XBox One controller and now you can use it in conjunction with vJoy's virtual controllers.

After a fair amount of troubleshooting, my setup required that my HOTAS be unplugged. Every step of your tutorial failed for me with them plugged in.
damn thanks for this. Couple of questions:
1 - Why the F..K doesn't Microsoft or VIRPIL fix this?
2 - Do i need to run JOYSTICK GREMLIN at startup?
You need Joystick Gremlin runing and activated or it won't work.
Flash the EEPROM
i hoped there would be a quick fix...nope...gotte install 2 different softwares and do a lot of programming....
Seems to be a massive oversight by Virpil surely, why is this software (or their own) not included to do this?
This is actually more of a problem with Elite. Frontier didn't design the game to recognize more than 32 buttons.
well, no, it’s mostly a problem with windows only allowing 32 buttons per controller. The issue with elite is the fact it doesn’t understand multiple controllers in terms of displaying controller + button, instead of just button number. Either way this controller requires extra software to function properly in any game, as you’d have to split the button ups into separate virtual controllers regardless
@@FiRem002 I know about the windows limit, but software can still be written to bypass the windows settings and see the extra buttons. I read that SC did this a couple of patches back and I assume that Elite could be patched to do the same without requiring an external app.
While they're at it, I wish they would patch the game to support ultra-wide monitors better too.
This is an Elite problem.
Am I out of line here for thinking that for over $400USD the thing should work correctly out of the box?
it works perfectly out of the box, the issue is with the way elite dangerous seems button inputs.
This is caused by ED relying on Windows for input. Windows has a set limit of 32 buttons per device. The only way ED will see more than 32 buttons is if it's patched to obtain input directly from devices.
COME ON! Why didn't virpil made it by themselves?! It costs not just 100$ seriously...
SMH. Leave it to MS to make work for us.
I had mine working perfectly. Then out of nowhere, it decided to scramble all my hardware buttons, and all the software buttons too. Imagine designing a piece of software that decides to change which button is which for no reason whatsoever. Must be sad living life with only 5 fucking brain cells.
Hol up I got to first afford a graphic card 😂
Split to virtual device by 32 buttons IS back under "PROFLIES" running VPC-JOYU-20220720
