Union Pacific 844 Lionel Lines 2010 LCCA Convention Steam Special

- Way back in 2010 after pulling the Denver Post Cheyenne Frontier Days train on Saturday. While the national LCCA (Lionel Collectors Club of America ) convention was in Denver. The usual Sunday return was delayed a day. So a convention special could be created. The tender was re-lettered "Lionel Lines" for the return from Denver, CO to Cheyenne, WY. Such a historic event the club still has a web page UP of the event. "Monday - The final full week of July 2010 was the time frame for the LCCA annual Convention - our 40th anniversary event. The week began with a train ride in Union Pacific’s Heritage fleet of passenger cars pulled by their famous 4-8-4 steam engine #844 accompanied by DD40X, Centennial diesel #6936, as a back-up if needed."
And on July 26, 2010 the Lionel Lines # 844 departed north to Cheyenne, WY.
Following the departure of Amtrak's California Zephyr. The Lionel Lines special backs past Coors field baseball stadium, and was eased back into Union Station in Denver for boarding. Under the shade of the viaduct, I have to change a flat tire as the Lionel Lines departs northbound. Fortunately we were able to catch her again at the Sand Creek trestle & Rocky Mountain Recycling in Commerce City, Brighton, Ft. Lupton, Platteville, Gilcrest, La Salle, and Evans before briefly stopping to grease the rods in Greeley. Then charging northbound for Eaton, Ault, Pierce, Nunn and finally Carr, CO before heading across the Terry Ranch where the buffalo roam and across the Wyoming border headed to Speer junction. West of Cheyenne by Dyna-Nobel the mighty northern glides thru the curves as the USAF Thunderbirds are in the sky! Lionel Lines unloads her passengers at the historic Cheyenne, WY station as the train is uncoupled from the locomotives before the LCCA tour buses drive away. The locomotives are then taken to the UP Steam Shops in the Cheyenne UP yard across the mains from the station.

you ever watch one of these videos from 10+ years ago and think "I wonder what I was doing in that moment?"
Yes! I definitely do! I have no idea what I was doing on July 26, 2010 as I was pretty young at the time and I did not yet have any kind of camera or equipment that would record what I was doing on that day, but it’s for reasons like what you said that I frequently take pictures and video almost every day on my phone so that in the future, I will be able to know what I was doing on each day.
Thank you, SteamUP!👍
I have been to joyride together with you!😃🤪😃

I never noticed 844 wearing LIONEL LINES on her tender before.
This day only for the Lionel Collectors Club of America's National Convention held in Denver, Colorado this special ran July 26, 2010
Up 844 high speeds fast
I can hear that dd40x engine still roaring.
She's a beauty that's for sure, pity they got retired, they were some badass loco in their day.
At least 844 is still doing Excursions..although she's in the Shop for repairs and restoration now but the Baldwin, Santa Fe 2926 has hit the rails again and should be doing some runs out to make sure everything is fine with her before they take her on some longer Excursions..

That is some sort of a consist! No wonder 6936 is coupled behind. Just so I know how many cars today? and how many could the UP Northerns pull safely in service??
The 844 could easily pull 26 cars at over 100mph on the flats. Somehow the officials think it's okay to not allow steam to show off their full power.
844 is perfectly capable of pulling a good few Cars but because she's on the Mainline she has to have a diesel engine in Atmospheric Mode to help with breaking and should there be an emergency, take over from 844 to keep the Mainline open because obviously there's millions of dollars being hauled every hour of everyday, but the problem with some people is that they don't understand why every single Train has to have a back up engine just in case

When are they gonna put this powerhouse to work with a mile of freight cars. The joyrides have gotten old with a diesel helping. If it can't handle anything more than this then the legend was false.
So seeing as you don't understand that this is the Mainline that has to be kept open I will explain it for you, 844 is pulling the Cars of this Train all on her own but because it is the Mainline and there's Millions of dollars in Freight being carried on it, yes even in 2010 when this piece of Footage was filmed, there had to be a diesel engine in the make up of the Train in Atmospheric Mode to help with the breaking and take over in an emergency should there be a problem with 844 and they have to shut off the Steam or blow the head of Steam off to prevent an explosion and still keep the Mainline open....but as you maybe missed the announcement 4014 is pulling Freight again and will probably double head with 844 when she's had a bit of work done to her and even then there's going to have to be a diesel for Safety reasons on the Mainline, maybe they'll run some passenger Trains mixed with the Freight too...
