Problematic Hadith about Women | Part 11 | Dr. Shabir Ally

  • The #Quran presents #men and #women as complimentary to each other and as #spiritual equals. However, it was revealed at a particular moment in history. The Quranic message encouraged the development of ethical changes in an #Arab society where men and women did not always have the same rights. These changes sometimes took time to be known to the early Arabs and for the Arabs to realize their implications. Nowhere are pre-Islamic cultural practices more apparent than in some popular #hadith, where we find problematic statements that do not seem to match the Quranic message and often promote inequality between men and women. People have great difficulties with these hadiths, and sometimes non-Muslims question #Islam for this reason. Dr. Shabir Ally examines two problematic hadith and shows how we can understand them using a balanced approach.

No daif Hadiths can be used to be the sole support for a law. The problem with shabir and commentators here is they want to reject Hadith based on whim. Shabir's standard of "would the prophet Muhammad pbuh have said this" is too vague and subjective. Two Muslims can have different opinions on the same Hadith and the truth is lost. This is clearly not a useful method. The standard method of Islamic scholars are superior to shabir's standard. They're objective and impartial. They don't allow for personal agendas to cherry pick Hadiths.

The discussion about hadiths being authentic is quite interesting and difficult.
I recalled another hadith: "the best of you are those who are the best to their wives". And this statement is quite strong. But if we follow the same logic we used for the hadiths mentioned in the video - the Quran talks about parents being the most important to a person, do we have to call this hadith problematic as well?

I read a book by the Madani Channel Dawat E islami people (Barelvi) and it listed examples which raised my eyebrows and reminded me of hadith. It gave an example of doing good deeds and then stated you get the amount of good deeds as a crow flying in its lifetime. Underneath it cited this as being 500 years. Alarm bells rang and a quick Google showed they rarely live beyond 20-30 yrs. Another one gave an example of a fire worshipper who had a son and he would tell his son to be mindful not to eat in front of Muslims in Ramadan and so this fire worshipper was given paradise when he died. So the highest sin which is associating with God (worshipping fire) is still a guarantee of heaven just for passing a comment to a son to not eat in front of Muslims?! The mind boggles with all these stories and yet countless people believe them. It also had examples of people seeing the prophet and yet basic common sense tells you how would you know it was him? I can't believe these people are sincere and yet they trade barbs on other sects it's beyond parody

    • @PT-kk8dp
      @PT-kk8dp Před 11 měsíci

@@mohamedsheikhmohamed5411 you wouldn't either with that kind of comment. A fable is defined as a short story meaning it can be fiction so you don't even give justice to the writers if these real "events" which you now term "fables" but at the same time you then also make up another label calling these people mystics in contradiction to the fable aspect to give them some kind of higher authority albeit in some kind of supernatural capacity ("mystics") and you're wrong again because they are no such thing. The example was written by some random Madani book author presumably about experiences of other Madani members almost as if selling their membership, i.e. you, the reader will also witness such miracles or receive good deeds if you join us. Also you're wrong on the other point which you claim is in relation to the words of the prophet. They are alleged words, nothing more because they are from 3rd hand sources however much you may claim authenticity about "chains". Human make mistakes, they lie they cheat and have agendas. If we were to believe people like you then the hundreds of thousands of so called hadiths would be so accurate as if they were observed, compiled, then recorded and verified by human minds akin to supercomputers. Common sense tells you that is impossible especially if many hadith were discarded and even what we have is a small fraction from those that were deemed unreliable.
Another reason you won't understand is your way of thinking. You say why compare the tales of mystics to the words of the prophet and yet miss the point entirely about the pattern of fiction present on both sides and where is started. It's people like you who question and will still insist crows can live 500 years just as there are hadiths which make no sense and equally you believe them. It's like building houses of sand on houses built of sand already, it gives the green light to jokers to write thousands of random books, not one in agreement with another make up what they want for followership. Where does it end?
There's plenty of words I can think of to describe someone who claims crows live for 500 yrs but a mystic would be the last thing I would call them.

    • @peach6779
      @peach6779 Před 11 měsíci +3

Hello! I tried googling what you were talking about because I was curious. For the hadith about the crow, all I could find similar to what you were saying was this "He reported God’s messenger as saying, 'If anyone out of a desire to please God fasts for a day, God will remove him from jahannam as far as a crow flies from the time it is a young bird till it dies of old age.” (Mishkat al-Masabih 2074, 2075). As you can see, it doesn't specify a period of time. This is the only hadith I found mentioning this and it doesn't come from sahih Bukhari or sahih Muslim.
Now as for the fire worshipper, that wasn't a hadith. It comes from a work called Nozhat al-Majales which is a collection of works from persian poets.
A lot of people confuse hadiths and end up not saying it properly so it's best to do research before accepting what someone says.

Especially, If we apply the criteria of "sahih-ness" (as per hadith methodology) to the books themselves, would the books still be considered reliable if they contain narrations that are contradictory to either Quran or Intellect or sometimes even the book itself?

My point is if parent is really to be obeyed more than her choice of spouse then that has breach this law. In Surah An Nisa:34 clearly mention that righteous women is devoutly obedient to her husband. This verse also imply that the husband is to be obeyed (so long it's not haram). With due respect to Dr Shabir, this is his opinion and it is not the strongest argument on this particular matter. The muktabar scholars still strong in the argument. There is no scientific approach to Hadith. It is a misnomer. There is no way to scientifically test the way, for instance, you perform tests or evaluations of other scientific subjects. We seem similar misuse in economics, refering to it as "social sciences".
The Hadith are perhaps open to litterary criticism and historic criticism and so on. But there is no "scientific approach" because the source material is not verifiable. None of the statements attributed to Mohammed can be with any scientific certainty confirmed that they are his. It because a circular argument instead. A source is claimed to be trusted and hence whatever he or she said, is considered confirmed words of Mohammed. Hence why the attribution and the person at the center of the attribution becomes so important. Because there is nothing else to rest the Hadith on (even the content of it is not enough). So instead a more apt term would be a litterary analysis or a more clear explanation: comprehensive comparitive analysis of source material that has non-textual and entirely oral origins that lack original source material to which it can be controlled or examined.

So if a mistake were to occur within the chain, and it was carried forth, then it’s incumbent for people to use their intellect and determine if it makes sense. For an extreme example, imagine if a Hadith said that the prophet pbuh said that the moon was made of cheese. And everyone just went along with it and accepted it. All throughout the chain of narration they repeated the same thing. This would constitute a Sahih Hadith. Then it turns out that it’s obviously not. So now you have a situation where one thing has to be true: did the prophet actually say this? Impossible. Did he lie? Impossible. Was it ever made of cheese? Impossible. Then it was obviously either fabricated by someone early on, or misheard and misquoted. The context (main criticism) is extremely important in determining what’s more likely to be true. And of course if any Hadith shows any signs that it goes against the Quran, then it’s automatically false.

Again, for average Muslims, I think they should start with knowledge of the five pillars, then study the characteristics of the Prophet (saw), known as the Shamaa'il al-Muhammadiyya. Because by the time that the Prophet was chosen for his mission, it was because Allah (swt) saw the goodness and uprightness in his heart. It's the reason why Aisha (ra) called him, "the walking Qur'an". This is the lense through which the average person should conduct their lives. Hadiths are not to be thrown out altogether, bc it's a never-ending game. We will end up with nothing. If a hadith appears problematic, it's best to say "that's interesting... but I know that the Prophet was kind and compassionate and nurturing and fought for women".

@@blumachine - The problem are not the hadith corpus per se. Because people with the same impetus of throwing out any material they find problematic can be carried into the Qur'an. There are plenty of criticisms that people levy against some "problematic" statements in the Qur'an. (e.g., the verse where it appears that God sanctions men hitting their spouses in Surat al-Nisaa'). But the overwhelming majority of Muslims would never think to just toss or ignore "problematic" verses. They instead opt to contextualize it and frame it in the bigger picture of what the Qur'an's overall message is.
The same should be done with the hadith: we need to contextualize, critique and apply the general maqasid of the shari'ah to these hadiths. Hadiths in themselves are not the end-all be-all of ethical and legal questions. They each have to go through a whole process of evaluation against legal principles, etc. This is not stuff that the average person should be doing anyway. Again, the average Muslim should focus on being kind, compassionate, just, merciful, etc. Do their 5 pillars and apply the ethos of the Prophet Muhammad's (saw) characteristics. The Prophet never hit women, shouted at them, treated them unjustly, etc. So that's what we should be following. Because that's the sunnah, or the habit of the prophet. Even if there are individual hadiths that seem to contradict the general sunnah of the Prophet. They are outliers.

Instead of creating confusion among people. If you open the door to picking and choosing scripture based on your desires then you might as well use any book as your source of guidance since the guidance is actually coming from your desires instead of Evidences.

The hadith cannot be trusted on the most elementary truths. If it were from God it would not contain so many contradictions. But this means that everything you think you know about Muhammad is a lie.

    Fear Allah, Shabir.
You're basically telling people to deny and reject the hadiths they don't like, this is a major deviance.
Delete this fitnah and do not speak in issues outside of your scope of knowledge and specialty.

Brothers and sisters, the Qur'an is sufficient and following hadiths is impermissible. Allah has warned us about this.
"And of men is he who takes instead frivolous *hadith* to lead astray from Allah's path without knowledge, and to take it for a mockery; these shall have an abasing chastisement." 31:6
    Read the following ayahs:
And in anything over which you disagree - *its ruling is [to be referred] to Allah.* [Say], "That is Allah , my Lord; upon Him I have relied, and to Him I turn back." 42:10
"One day We shall raise from all Peoples a witness against them, from amongst themselves: and We shall bring thee as a witness against these (thy people): and We have sent down to thee the *Book explaining all things* , a Guide, a Mercy, and Glad Tidings to Muslims." 16:89
"O People of the Scripture, there has come to you Our Messenger making clear to you much of what you used to conceal of the Scripture and overlooking much. There has come to you from Allah *a light and a clear Book* ." 5:15
"Alif, Lam, Ra. These are the verses of the *Book and a clear Qur'an* ." 15:1
"Shall I seek other than Allah for judge, when He it is Who hath *revealed unto you (this) Scripture, fully explained* ? Those unto whom We gave the Scripture (aforetime) know that it is revealed from thy Lord in truth. So be not thou (O Muhammad) of the waverers." 6:114
" *A Book whose verses have been detailed* , an Arabic Qur'an for a people who know," 41:3
" *Thus do We explain the signs in detail* ; and perchance they may turn (unto Us)." 7:174
"And when We read it, follow thou the reading;" 75:18
"Nay more, *it is for Us to explain it (and make it clear)* : 75:19
"For We had certainly sent unto them a Book, based on knowledge, *which We explained in detail* ,- a guide and a mercy to all who believe." 7:52
"And they do not come to you with an argument except that *We bring you the truth and the best explanation* ." 25:33
" *Allah has sent down the best hadith* : a consistent Book wherein is reiteration. The skins shiver therefrom of those who fear their Lord; then their skins and their hearts relax at the remembrance of Allah. That is the guidance of Allah by which He guides whom He wills. And one whom Allah leaves astray - for him there is no guide." 39:23
"These are the verses of Allah which We recite to you in truth. *Then in what hadith after Allah and His verses will they believe?* " 45:6
"Then in what *hadith* after the Qur'an will they believe?" 77:50
So obey Allah, and obey His Messenger: but if ye turn back, *the duty of Our Messenger is but to proclaim (the Message) clearly and openly* . 64:12
"Say, "Obey Allah and obey the Messenger; but if you turn away - then upon him is only that [duty] with which he has been charged, and upon you is that with which you have been charged. And if you obey him, you will be [rightly] guided. *And there is not upon the Messenger except the [responsibility for] clear notification* ." 24:54
    *The most merciful* 55:1
"It is *He* Who has taught the Qur'an." 55:2
" *The guiding of them is not thy duty* (O Muhammad), but Allah guideth whom He will. And whatsoever good thing ye spend, it is for yourselves, when ye spend not save in search of Allah's Countenance; and whatsoever good thing ye spend, it will be repaid to you in full, and ye will not be wronged." 2:272
"And We have certainly diversified in this Qur'an for the people from *every [kind of] example* ; *but man has ever been, most of anything, [prone to] dispute.* " 18:54
"Say, " Allah is most knowing of how long they remained. He has [knowledge of] the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth. How Seeing is He and how Hearing! They have not besides Him any protector, and *He shares not His legislation with anyone.* "" 18:26
“You worship not besides Him except [mere] names you have named them, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. *Legislation is not but for Allah.* He has commanded that you worship not except Him. That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know.” 18:40

All Muslim brothers and sister….question yourself is my Quran absolute truth and how did this book came about? Is my Muhammad really telling our Muslim people the truth? How did your leader Muhammed knew about Abraham, Moses, Ismael, etc and he put these names in your Quran Book? These names were found originally from Christian’s Bible way before Quran. Your leader shut the New Testament (NT) to all your people. There’s is a resurrection that happened if you read them all chapters esp…start with John & Luke. I encourage you to research bc I did my research too….Jesus said He is the only way to eternal life when we confess with our mouth and believe that He rose from the dead. John 3:16/14:6…❤️🙏RESEARCH and don’t keep saying you did….READ🙏🙏🙏

I have a question for you: why should I trust the New Testament? It has many geographical mistakes, added passages that were not there, the original manuscripts do not exist. How can a document with mistranslations from the Hebrew be a book of G?

You first read if the Bible is truly (as it is now) the word of your and our creator. If you are really honest, sincere, knowledgeable, straight forward and truthful, after reading countless reports published by jewsish and christian scholars, you will realise that Bible should probably the most modified, edited with all sorts of insertion, deletion, addition and subtraction. Only God knows how much of it is from God and Jesus. So YOU READ FIRST what you are reading. Read about the Bible first before you start reading the Bible.

In your research you only read those who you wanted to say what you already believed. But read people who says contrary and raise plausible objections and questions. Even the most smart William lane Craig do not discuss on bible errors and mistakes. If Bible really changed by scribes then Bible could not be right historical document to examine whether resurrection happened or not because no one can change god's final words if nt is really a final testament of God. Only Quranic god claims to protect and guard the Qur'an.
