Uncover the mysteries of Psyche, the metal monster beyond Mars! Join NASA's groundbreaking Psyche mission as it journeys to a unique asteroid, potentially the remnant of a failed alien world.
Yeah, I am genuinely impressed. So impressed, I decided to search if weird old pictures, drawn historically without ever seeing the subject Animal, had a place online... And they do. Medieval animal artworks from manuscripts. My favourites so far are the grumpy oyster. The Elephant with a tornado trunk. And lets not forget Sea-Lion... Yes, it has a Red shaggy mane.
Especially if you look at a Javan or Sumatran Rhino instead of a typical African rhinoceros. They have exactly the folds of skin and bumps shown in the artwork.

Brilliant! Thanks Simon & friends. On behalf of all Greek Speakers throughout all time - I deeply appreciated the cost and pain it took to pronounce this word correctly! Erististics for all!
The new communication system changes everything. Right now we only see still images or stitched together photos from mars missions because of low bandwidth. It takes days to beam back the data. Dial up is a good analogy, if anyone remembers AOL and watching the screen load a picture for 5 minutes. So far this new system has been successful and may potentially allow us to one day see high definition videos from places like mars.
Dialup was positively speedy compared to first modems I used in the early '80's - these were as low as 300 baud or "superfast" at 1200 baud - yup 300 bits per second. My crappy, cheapo phone runs at 50Mbps by comparison. Soz - off topic, but shows the difference over 40 years! Same goes for the tech used in Space exploration/Telescopes etc.
@@BadYossa Thanks for sharing that. That was before my time, I didn't have a PC until I was able to buy one myself when I was an older teenager. That was around the emergence of dial up. Simon the type of guy to investigate a metal core of a planet by looking at a picture of it, and saying “looks like a core to me 🤷♀️ checks the little box that says scientific analysis complete” I want more wistlerisms or simonology like this.
Two things to keep in mind. The first is that the value of the material cycle is based on current Earth prices. So if psyche actually got here the materials wouldn't be as scarce so they wouldn't be a valuable. The second is that the current price of moving something safely to orbit is about $10,000 a pound. So it's more likely the cost of moving mining equipment to orbit and then safely getting the material back down to earth will dominate the cost. It would also cost a phenomenal amount to decelerate psyche and send it into the inner solar system. And it would be a fantastically dangerous object to have anywhere near earth. It would be the ultimate weapon.
What if we wait unti it’s as close to earth as possible, blow it up with nukes, then just collect whatever pieces come flying our way and just let the rest go
I've been thinking much the same things for quite awhile. There's also the question of how having such a source of (presumably affordable) metal at hand would affect the mining industry on Earth. Potentially tens or hundreds of thousands of low- to middle-wage earners could be impacted.
I can almost hear the narrator's voice from my childhood saying "And in the distant, black vastness of space this odd, metal asteroid floated along its lonely trajectory. But hello, what's that? It's a Clanger. It's Tiny Clanger and look, she's got a balloon!"
Psyche, 2029: Finally! I've arrived at Metal World! NASA: Good! Now knock on their door and tell them to lower the volume. We've been getting noise complaints from Mars.
called Psyche, named for the goddess of the soul, damaged bare core of what should have been its own whole proper entity... man, way to make me emotionally attached to an inanimate object.
It wouldn't be too hard to imagine that objects of a similar density, after an impact to end up in the same area and be affected similarly by a random series of events that were much more probable during the highly chaotic time of that areas timeline.
hey! a subject i havnt seen covered much is the idea of a population of smaller stable planets in the inner solar system that were thrown into chaos with the inward migration of jupiter, and that mars and possibly mercury are relics of this past with earth and venus forming after the Jupiters Grand Tack
How soon until we get to buy "shares" of this metal monster from hucksters, hustlers, and charlatans? Or... do I need to get on this? ;) Thanks for another educational and entertaining video Simon and team!
Ive always been of the assumption that the asteroid belt was the remains if a planet at that orbit that was torn apart, likely by Jupiter. The idea that Psyche is, all or part of, the core of this world is quite plausible to me.
Considering there is a Yuri Gagarin video, do you think deep dives on historical missions could be in the scope of this channel? I know the Yuri Gagarin video didn't do incredible, but I think Simon covering some things like apollo 11, 13, soyuz 1,6,11, etc. could be really entertaining.
I think 16 Psyche is at least part of the core, that was once the planetesimal, that now makeup; Martian Trojans, Hungaria group asteroids, the main asteroid belt, Cybele group asteroids, Hildas triangle asteroids, Jupiter Trojans (and perhaps some of Jupiters moons as well). The rest of the mass may have been ejected to the outer of the Solar system, or the Kuiper Belt, and beyond. Some may even have been captured by Saturn.

Mining an asteroid like this would literally destroy the economy of earth. Look at the Spanish economy after they brought back loads of gold from the Americas. That would be a drop in the bucket compared to an asteroid.
@@juhajuntunen7866 it won't be expensive to add mined material to the same shuttle that was just emptied when new equipment, more crew got to the asteroid..... as a matter of fact, it would only cost as much as you are paying the people to work. If asteroid Psyche is truly a protoplanetary core, that means it's likely to contain lots of diamonds as well as precious metals such as gold. Enough to make it well worth going after despite hideous costs. Wonder if Elon's thinking about this...
@@karlquinn6571 Gold and diamonds both have numerous industrial uses which are currently somewhat restricted due to their relative rarity. That could change. Drillbits that never wear out.
