      I just tell the waiter or waitress “I can’t have that” and mostly they assume that I’m allergic. But you can also say you are allergic too which is true really. They take a lot more care with your food at restaurants when there is an allergy as opposed to a diet. Just make sure you are specific on what you want. I ordered a steak once and it came marinated. I thought I was just going to get a plain steak. I had to send it back. Now I’ve learned to say just a plain steak no spices.

    Dear Dr Dan, if an athlete is doing low or no carb diets can we assume their glycogen stores are being replenished by gluconeogenisis of excess fats or proteins? I guess what Im trying to know is do keto athletes have more or less the same access to glycogen as a non-keto athlete and therefore so long as the high energy activity is over before the glycogen is depleted then they would perform similarly? For sure if the activity goes much longer the keto guy/gal will bonk and have to slow down without exogenous carb intake

The only concern/side effect I have is that I definitely do suffer from hair loss,which Is a worry for someone of my age, it’s at this stage that I do start eating carbs once again…

    • @JustJ0nathan
      @JustJ0nathan Před rokem +1

      I know what you mean by mourning carbs. I just completed 30 days of strict carnivore and I feel like it completely reset my body. I tried a cookie on day 31 because I was curious if it would trigger my cravings and set me back. I was very nervous! Funny enough, I thought the cookie was so painfully sweet. It actually made my tongue go numb and I didn’t enjoy it like I would have before. How strange. It’s been a few days since that happened and I still am not craving the carbs. The more sustainable thing for me is switching to a more keto diet trying to keep my carbs as close to zero as possible. I definitely see the benefit in significantly reducing carbs, but doing strict carnivore is not realistic for me. With this experience, I feel more confident that I could indulge in carbs once in a while and not fall off the wagon.

    • @markotrieste
      @markotrieste Před rokem +2

      I can't ensure for the performance, but I can ensure you that it's perfectly possible. Since I've fat adapted, I can easily run 10k after 24 hours of fasting. I even ran after a 36-hour fast. Maybe, just maybe, on shorter and more intense runs, having glycogen stored in the muscles may improve performance. However, once you run/cycle beyond one hour, glycogen is depleted anyway, so being fat adapted helps avoiding "the wall" or that constant urge to eat energy bars that is typical in endurance events.

    • @Vexarax

But some people insist they cannot function without carbs so it depends on the individual!!

This woman is as healthy as a horse! Except for a bit of knee pain, she takes 0 medications and has no known ailments. I know 50 year olds that are not as healthy as her. Myself - I'm a mess. I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes over 20 years ago and was never advised on what to eat except in the past few years. I ate what I wanted (within reason) and took my medication as I was told. For quite some time my A1C was below 6.0 and my doctors didn't try to change anything. Then, around 2017 my A1C started to creep up to over 7.0. I haven't been able to get it under control since, at least without causing another problem. I've recently started Intermittent Fasting and trying to eat a low-carb diet, but it's hard. I go for bloodwork in June so we'll see how things go.

    The body can synthethize all the sugar, that´s not the issue. The issue is that carbs are like the moderator of a nuclear reactor, cooling the metabolic hyperacceleration that eating only (or almost) protein and fat causes. Something that you do not want long term. Maybe you have other means of achieving the same "yin" counterbalance like relaxing and meditating every day, but it´s way more practical to just eat some healthy carbs, like a banana or a potato.

      Since fibre is not digestible, it irritates the walls of the intestines which in turn produce a mucus to deal with the irritation. This is a laxative effect, which the body will get used to (ultimately not good). In fact, there's a recent study done involving people with chronic constipation. They were broken up into three groups...high fibre intake, moderate fibre intake and zero fibre intake. It was only the zero fibre diet that saw 100% of the group resolve their constipation. Makes sense if you understand that "bulk" simply adds to the problem.....it's like trying to relieve a traffic jam by sending in more cars.

There is simply no such thing as something that is exclusively healthy and has no harmful effects. Unfortunately, this is the case, because stupid humanity has repeatedly polluted the Earth and contaminated every food chain with all kinds of harmful substances, be it plant or animal. A long time ago, our world is not as clean - no more - in terms of food as it was in the Paleolithic. The most we can do to decide which food source we think is the healthiest and least harmful is to eat it and avoid the rest. In my opinion, eating insects has a lot of benefits, because insects are rich in essential amino acids, and compared to this benefit, the risk of any harm is small. I admit, "small" is not the same as nothing, zero...
      Sadly to say, but we have to take some risks, because we cannot live on sunlight alone, unfortunately.

    Good talk. I am on a life long self transformation. I have been managing/mismanaging Diabetes (Type 2). I recently gave up. By that I mean I threw out everything I had tried and began by: reducing the variables. My goal , instead has become: find my current baseline. I have some experience with intermittent fasting (while taking oral medication) and have seen blood sugar levels go down over a 24 hour period, before. But I have still failed to achieve consistent understanding of exactly what my body is doing - which is really the point here.
    So. I tossed the meds entirely. I also began intermittent fasting, again. Initially I could only achieve a resting level of 13.5, which is undesirably high. I began tossing food items and simplifying the food intake. The resting level initially did not change, it hovered around 13.5-13.4 ( over a 20/4 hour split - 20 fast/ 4 eating window). I substituted food items with more simply options and read every single label (my god some of them are in tiny font - glasses while shopping is now mandatory). Alas not much changed.
    I went to 32 hour cycle which had me in and around 10.5 (28/4). From this I decided to fast for a longer period. I have a fairly physical job and am in my 67th year and had some serious reservations about whether I would be able to cope with that length of fast - there are some unknowns when making that kind of decision. I went to a 48 hour cycle (45/3). I am happy to report that I am headed downward to normal resting sample numbers - my last reading, yesterday, was 8.1. I have tried introducing food items to judge their effects and at times I go up to double figures (as high as 10.5), which means those foods are not currently an option.
    I am well on this journey now. My current concern is calorific intake, which is likely less than the prescribed daily norm. I am ambivalent though, since I am finding that my body is remarkably good at sorting out requirements. My approach to diet at present to learn more about foods - with that I would appreciate some feedback on that subject (where can I get calories and what plant foods should I try?). I will keep my system simple - changing only one variable at a time and take some time to find a range of food within which I can live comfortably. In doing this I may be able to adjust the fast interval at some point in the future. I am determined to not fall off the wagon (ie. eat food, offered, that is unsuitable). I do not smoke and have not drunk alcohol since 2017. This has to be the way my life proceeds from here. For now I am content.

Illness will also affect your numbers. If you are overweight lose weight. It does make a difference to your numbers. Allow the possibility that it may take awhile to heal. My blood sugars are progressively lowering. My HBA1C is going down. I eat at of meat, cream, and eggs. Some cheese and a good quantity of butter. I also drink keto chow which has fat of choice. Most of the time I'll do half a cup of cream but sometimes one whole cup. I have now started intermittent fasting and taking berberine. I really feel for you as I felt the stress in your comment. I hope you find some answers.

      I took medication for around 20 years. I'm over it, mostly because I think I can do it without - normal range is 5-7 resting blood sugar level, I can get there.
      I my eating window, I start with a slice of vintage cheddar; I eat a large salad (+zero sugar/carbs mayo): lettuce; spinach; capsicum; cauliflower; broccoli; cabbage; small amount of cashew nuts (chopped); Parmesan cheese; onion; tomato. With the salad I might have a slab of salmon or nice piece of steak or chicken legs or lamb shoulder chops or pork bellies. I prefer animal protein with fat on.
      The second meal is smaller: fish or meat with some mushrooms and asparagus.
      I close the eating window with a smoothie/bullet: whole milk; hemp protein; Brazil nuts; spinach; zero carb/sugar natural Greek yogurt; pumpkins seeds.
      So far I have everything as simple as possible. If I change something I change just one something and toss it if the levels are not moving down. My understanding is that for me to achieve this I have to keep plugging away and know my bodies response to every food.

    The problem is this - there are different kinds of carbs - and some are better for you than others. So to think carbs as a whole are bad for you is not the full story. Do your research and eat some good carbs, even if you are favouring keto. I'm not overweight and eat mainly a carb based diet - but I don't eat anything processed - and it is ok - you burn the carbs and it is self maintaining. If you are overweight, going keto for a short time is ok, to encourage your body to burn fat - but once you are at your ideal weight, don't make the mistake of thinking keto is it for life - long term there are problems with it. Once you are at your ideal weight, eat a calorie controlled diet - doesn't need to be keto, it can be anything as long as it isn't processed food - at your ideal weight, the only thing that matters is don't eat more calories than you burn.

Personally speaking - meat healed my acid reflux, my carb addiction, obesity, insulin resistance , changes in vision, low blood sugar, gallbladder, pancreatitis and kidney problems. As a result I'm able to find the time to conduct research regarding a hypothesis I have regarding one possible fundamental reason as to why many members of both the Greatest Generation and the Baby Boomer cohort were both so late at beginning a KETO journey In one word: Popeye. Beginning in 1929, the creators and publishers of the comic strip and the cartoons began a campaign of what perhaps can be referred to as pro-vegan "Popeye-ganda." part of the popular culture zeitgeist for decades. Popeye of course claimed he was "strong to the finich 'cause I eats me Spinach." As a result, countless parents encouraged their children for decades to "eat your vegetables so you'll be strong like Popeye." Remember also that it was common for kids to watch Popeye cartoons between arriving home from school and sitting down to dinner. Talk about timing. To counterbalance things somewhat, of course, the character Wimpy was something of a carnivore with his preference for hamburgers he couldn't pay for. . One cultural milestone which pushed back against this trend was when President Herbert Walker Bush, certainly and proudly told the world that he simply didn't like eating broccoli. Carry on Carnivore Warriors, proud and strong here in the midst of this glorious holiday season

You ll probably gain nothing and put a great stress on your metabolism. This might be great periodically or under certain medical conditions even therapeutic but not sustainable. No deficiency equals no problem. Are you sure? All macro and micronutrients are potentially toxic. Lipids especially, proteins too, let alone carbohydrates. Brain works far better on ketones! Not everyone fits on a certain diet like carnivore and Keto diets. I tried both to experiment and found that these diets may cause certain issues to many healthy individuals. I had to stop after a few weeks on each diet. Experienced excessive cloudy, dark foaming urine that never occurred in my whole healthy life. Even though I bought high quality meat and poultry products, grassfed pasture raised organic, you name it. After I switched back to my mediterranean diet, these symptoms totally reversed to normal LESS than 48 hours. Note that I am healthy, sporty and athletic person. No need doctor visits, prescriptions and any kind of vaccines, my whole life, at least till now.
