- #KeepAustinGeared. In this episode of Austin Garages, Steve heads over to Bloodshed Motors to check out an all-electric muscle car. He meets with Mitch Medford, the creative genius behind the Zombie 222, a 1968 Ford Mustang fastback that's been converted to all electric. 1,000 horse power, 1,800 pound feet of torque, 0 to 60 in 1.79 seconds. They don't call it a Hot Rod; they don't call it a Rat Rod; they call it a Lightning Rod.

“It’s not a hot rod, it’s not a rat rod, it’s a lightning rod”
that’s one badass way to describe it, damn
Can't beat the sound of a V8 but this is the future at least we can still keep the classic steel muscle cars as this video shows
Idk why, but I kind of like the electric motor noises
Yeah your right I think I'm starting to like electric motors too even the sound.
U can put speakers to modulate any engine sound u lov.....guess what... that's the future "any engine sound" hehe
Yeah agreed, Battery technology is behind of what it should be. Think they'll have to come with a standard battery first so you can pull up to service station and do a swap out and keep going vs. stopping for a charge
Now can he make FIREWORKS that look pretty and no noise ? I'd take the rumble of V8 anyday over FIREWORKS !!! Fast car but no one knows your coming, I bet can get lower and smooth the floor like NASCAR, no exhaust, just SUSPENSION only. Lower the faster will go.
I work in Lakeway TX and pass by their garage everyday. They always have awesome cars sitting outside. Plus the zombie 222. Very awesome to see in person.
Are they still there? I'm near Round Rock and Cedar Park, would definitely make the detour.
Love to know the cost. Considered electric for my chevelle over a decade ago
this is a man who loves the hell out of what he does and is damn good at it. I love the classic stangs, but im never one to call 'SACRILEGE!!', if you can create something unique and do it well, or hell even if its been done a million times over, as long as its done well and put together cleanly, im gonna love and respect it. And this is a hell of a unique and beautiful build.
right on.... well said
@ Canucklehead Right! Those people don't understand the "hot rod" attitude: new spirit, bones and joints dropped into an old soul. But, most importantly, there are no rules!
True

I can agree with the sacrilege crowd to some degree, but only with rare examples. Ford made a shedton of Mustangs in the 60s, so unless it the engine code is a K, R, Q or T (maybe S) then I'm sorry to say even a convertible example is not rare. As far as I'm concerned, cut her up and make it the way you want!
would it be a crime to put a big block v8 in a Tesla?
More like useless dead weight.
Seems kinda pointless, but absolutely not.
You can do whatever you like with your vehicles.
Technically yes
Someone already put a Chevy LS V8 into one
Id do it in a roadster but thats it
Lord,I wish I had the clams to electrify my 1970 Torino! What an awesome car!
1800 ft lb of instant torque is just incredible. Especially in something that light. This is incredible.
As the owner of a 67 fastback, I say it's cool as hell and it is the future. It won't be long before there's kits for conversions into vintage steel and why not, it's fast and it's clean to boot.
Best looking car ever made + electric ugh, this is simply my favorite car I have ever seen. I wish this was something you could buy at a dealer. If only battery technology had a breakthrough. With the color scheme I wouldn't be surprised if Monster tried to sponsor this lol.
Enough juice to power a hospital.....I like that line
Technically True for short terms Emergency Backup. Hospitals are starting to implement Massive Battery Backup. To make transition to Generators easier.
"CLEAR"
Let the electric geeks race there battery operated cars but please don’t them interfere with American Muscle and heritage-this is a whole new game
Ya. Defiantly an overstatement. It's obvious these people have no idea how much electricity it takes to power a hospital.
For 3 minutes...
The best mustang is the one you never hear coming
Great car for a drive by....lol... Let me stop giving thugs ideas as if they won't think of it themselves
HLZZZZZ YES STEALTH
It takes some getting used to... but man! What a bad ass piece of work!
to put things in perspective;
the Porsche 918 is the million dollar figure head of performance. it's hybrid, actually, and gets to 60 in 2.4 seconds.
that's right
this mustang gets to sixty half a second faster than a MILLION DOLLAR masterstroke of engineering.
this things gets to sixty literally faster than you can say "zero to sixty"
the zombie 222 and the cars he makes are six figures if I remember right.
Kap pa
yes, I believe a fully built 222 from him is $150,000 all in
Battery of the Zombie 222 lasts only about an hour or less though. That does not cancel out how freaking awesome it is!
To be fair to the Porsche he tho, it is a lot more comfortable than the 222
918 does 9.7 quater and this car only 9.9 figura out who is BS here. also 918 is a porsche masterpiece
The application is amazing! Embrace the fabrication and innovation
That is as awesome as it gets. The torque is what is so wild about it. Great job Mitch....You and your team are great Man. Keep on keeping on.
Torque!!!!
Amazing retrofit performance. And the car still looks fantastic.
This is beyond words! Just fantastic. I'm soooooo for this and want one.
Put a couple of loudspeakers under the hood and play a V8-soundtrack and no one will know it's electric :-)
zapfanzapfan that's what I aim to do one day, copy any muscle car audio track from any NFS game and I'll be fine
Yeah man...naturally aspirated V8 sound
So sort of like in the i8
They can technically do that exactly how the original would sound in connection to the computing system with all relevant speed and gear changes.
lould speakers, that would be so phony, and laughable.
Most exciting innovation to date. Blast from my past and electric. How cool is this dude. Much respect.
This definitely ranks as one of the 10 coolest things iv'e ever seen. We can still have awesome cars in 2090
This shit just steel toe boots kicked me in the nuts. seeing a muscle car transformed into an electric power wheel is something I never expected to see in my whole life, but it's really cool at the same time. Seems like it could be something fun that will grow on me after actually driving one if I ever live to afford one.
electric motors have instant torque its insane tbh
What does it feel like to have nuts?
I'll stick with a Roaring V8
Prince William has a converted Jag XKE. This idea is catching on.
.@@hiphopcroaks24 -then it levels off, to no more gain.
You did one hell of a job sir. You can tell you definitely respect your work. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
This is the future. The looks of the classic cars of my youth and the power of my future.
Hey man I'm totally totally blown away its awesome, I want one 😎💪
Awesome job, Mitch ! I'm with him ! The G's look incredible.
*Fast And Furious 9: All Charged Up* Great, now Dom's going electric with his Charger... 😤
Fuck no. Bring back roaring and shaking v8s.
Cleopatra JDMQueen lol if you want to go slow electric is better
Cleopatra JDMQueen ok show me a electric as fast as my pro stock car 7.2 @189 mph in a quarter mile
Cleopatra JDMQueen so put the vw against a F1 ferrari electric would never win
Cleopatra JDMQueen yep fastest electric one on earth is 7.27 @ 185 mph my pro stock is still faster and I'm N/a no turbo or spray with turbos in in the 6s
What a beast!
The '68 Mach I was my first Mustang. 390, bronze and black finish with Cobra air. It spent 6 weeks in the shop out of the one year's time that I owned it. Couldn't keep my foot off the accelerator. The horn used to blow whenever I made a turn. I could never get the right pressure down. The horn was triggered by a pressure sensitive strip around the entire inside rim of the steering wheel and if you squeezed the steering wheel too tight while making a turn too fast it would set it off, lol, which we always managed to do.. I paid my cousin 1800 for the car. Hate to think what it would be worth today. Was getting married and traded it in for a new '72 Buick station wagon, dope slap. The only other car that gave it a run for the money in both looks and performance was an all black Goat, a '67 Pontiac GTO convertible.
Incredible Zombie, Mitch and Steve. Fitting too for viewing on this day, Halloween, 2018. Thanks for the memories along with the awesome upgrade.
Mitch thank you for letting this young man share this video. The only thing is my mom's man and I stopped building cars about 3 years ago together. Had we caught on to the electric evolution we'd still be building cars and getting them in car crap magazine in November issue like we did in 2012
Great job thinking out the box congratulations what a great job.
Bad ass dude, can't wait to see the Lincoln 👍
Thank you for your time.
Nice !!!
Thanks for showing homage to John and, The "ZOMBIE" .
Wow ... very impressive!! 0-60 in 1.75 seconds ... even faster than the Challenger SRT Demon!! I wonder what the G-Force is on that monster?!
Thanks Nathan ... quite amazing!!
nathan alan it should be over two G
Which begs another question. Can it get as good as it gives? (Stopping distance)
4g
Build only for performance and slower than a Formula 1 car, which can also run 200 miles flat out. Can this one, I mean, without charging 3 times for 2 hour ..
The intensity on his face when he does that burnout
the man who built this is truly a GENIUS
Love it! Had many mustangs growing up and ended up with a 2007 Roush 427r till recently feel on bad times. Enjoy your videos and maybe, God willing I'll get another stang!
I love it and love what you are doing. I have owned and built many fast and loud mustangs but I have seen the light and electric is the future. Nothing like moving out in dead silence, just the wind in our hair, pure stealth. SCREW BIG OIL
Say that when you need to lubricate your bearings. LOL
I love how when he talks he keeps looking over towards the passenger seat like there is someone there.
Awesome work!
Happy I seen that car in person!
Very nice. I love that stang bro!!!!😃
"Hi my name is Steve Forsman. Nice to meet you. What am I looking at?"
"Well Steve, this is called a CAR."
LOL
Hey i resemble that comment!!!!
"...more than a Peterbilt or a Mack truck." Yeah, for a full 30 seconds, then it's time for a charge! Pete's and Macks do it for a million miles - PFFFFFFFFFFFT!
Alright I’m sure everyone can agree that they would love to see and hear a massive v8 motor in a mustang like this....BUT come on everyone you can’t tell me this is kick ass! This is so different it’s amazing! 1000hp!?!? Yea I’ll drive this in a heart beat!
when i win the lottery, i will get me some of these.
This is the future, this is what I want. I've owned a '13 Boss 302 and now own an '18 Mustang GT. It's the power and speed that's important, not where it comes from.
The silent speed.....Y A W N!
That's because you don't like cars, you like to show (to other people, maybe) that you're fast. For those who really love cars, power and speed aren't a primordial concern.
Thiago Cavalcante i like cars very much, and I don’t really give a flip about racing strangers either. But, to me, electric cars are about as exciting as sex with a robot woman. Great idea for practical purposes but the visceral experience is largely diminished.
@@gman1003 Let me guess, you have never been a passenger in a fast EV? The instant torque will rearrange your guts. If you want to remain ignorant and biased never take a ride or drive a fast one. It will ruin ICE cars for you forever.
@@thiagocavalcante_ Bullshit. Many people like to own fast cars because they enjoy the performance aspect. Its not about impressing other people its about enjoying the drive and the new wave of EVs do this very well.
What makes the mustang amazing is the roar and rumble of the V8
I would literally move out of state to work with these this is been my dream job for 5+ years after learning cnc an everything else under the sun to build my own
THATS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In 1964 the Mustang didn't have the 271 hp 289 hipo engine. But, it doesn't take away from this story. I'm just a Mustang guy...
Love the tech and the CAR!
Absolutely awesome
A Flashback ~ Like Back to the Future.
Definitely would love to own a collection of all electric Mustangs.
Hell no
Beautiful integrated and I like the conectorbank right behinde the fuel-flap, its electric but still a musclecar
That paint is gorgeous!!!
It may need an aftermarket exhaust
Put a hamster on a wheel for a turbo...
Or at least a fart can
Yang Hu Id suggest Thunder Tubes.
Maybe some new high-power blinker fluid.
Yang Hu 69 likes, I'm not touching it
No oil, spark plugs, clutches, filters, no emissions equipment like o2, mass air, water sensors, catalytic converters and best of all no gas stations
Have fun waiting 3hrs for one recharge.
I can drive 400 miles, take 5 minutes or so to fill up and go another 400 miles. I can hike down the road and bring some gas back if I need to. How much electricity can you fit in that bucket? Can you even get a "jump start" from another electric car? Share some battery? Nope, it's tow trucks for you, then another 3-4 hour wait when you get to a receptacle. Gasoline or diesel powered tow trucks to the rescue!
stickloaf has an O3 problem
While your car doesn’t pollute the air, your power plants still are. So is mining for lithium.
Nope just a long ass charge time and one hell of a electric bill
That is one badass car... No doubt about it
This is an amazing project build! After watching this, I am now considering buying a Fastback shell body and installing an electric drivetrain. Not only will I have a beast car, but I will also be able to avoid the strict gas emission regulations.
Those years don’t have any smog regulations or gas
I get the same reaction with my Tesla. Some car guys think it is awesome, and others think I sold my soul for some sort of vegan hippie mobile. I think electric cars are just misunderstood. The sad part is some people will refuse to ride in one because their mind is so made up. I remember when E85 was just starting to get popular and people couldn't figure out why I wanted to convert my Corvette to run on it. They were like, "oh that fancy new hippie gas? It lowers your mileage." You may get fewer miles to a tank, but it is something like 118 octane and you can get a ton of power out of it.
I get the same reaction from motorcyclists when I say my first motorbike will be the electric one from Super Soco called the TC model.
Octane is the measure of a gasoline’s ability to resist knocking or pinging during combustion. It has nothing to do with the power output. High compression engines use higher octane not for more power but to reduce pre-ignition.
Funny how cars and trucks started out electric and are now going back.
BEV are the Stifled Delayed Past. Baker Electric in the 1900s could do 100miles at 25mph. Imagine if we continued to develop them with computer help since the 70s.
we would've been far further progressed with technology
I know this to. 1913 Porsche had a hybrid. First off is the steamcar. Edison and Ford teamed up for a good electric version, but Ford went for the easy money in the model T. A lot off what we think is new today is an idea/prototype from those days. After 25 years of gas bikes i got myself an electric bike. Its awsome, and now my favorite bike. And the cost and maintenence is close to nothing 😱. The crazyest off all is that its a american product 👍. Usa makes electric cars and bike that is just fantastic 👍 They are back on top again with design, quality and top prefornance 💪. I am a 100% car/bike guy with a independent and free life 😂. Got shocked over that people was so "gasfooled" by MR.Oil. Lot of people need time to change in unity 😂. I just show them my true heart of wheels 😂.
horrors.
YEP, 1890's America had Electric cars and Electric Delivery trucks, the General Store/Seed & Feed had a Electric Truck to make deliveries and even MILK trucks were Electric.
BUT GM and Ford conspired to end Electric vehicles by Inventing the Electric Starter motor, before that Starting a CRANK motor was a messy and Dangerous affair. and Women refused to use CRANK cars. the Electric cars of the time were Elegant and Beautiful, they had flower vases inside, they had Electric Interior Lights and Electric Headlights as well, when ICE cars still had GAS Lamps for Headlights....LOL.
and in All the BIG citys there were 100's of Electric charging stations. they replaced the places where you HITCHED your Horse. and the Citys became more cleaner as there was no HORSE poop on the street.
before then, stepping in Horse manure was a common sight.
I think that electric is awesome, I have an e bike and it has impressed me so much that now I have an incredible respect for guys like these, until you try it yourself you just can't fathom how powerful it is.love the car and I am honestly quite a bit envious!
I’m a mustang fan and I love this great job
Next stop for this mustang should be Jay Leno Garage
paul austin The car you own race 1/2 mile for pink slips. If zombie222 wins your car is going to the Crusher.
That thing has the power of a locomotive.
Good analogy. Diesel engines just power a generator which runs the electric motors. The diesel doesn't have the torque to pull a train.
Lightning rod, great name. You have started an all new class of cars
Dude yes I been thinking of this build for the longest I thought I was the only one
Nice!! Keep in mind this (electric performance) is in it's infancy.... :-)
Kind of like the V8 sound, this sounds like some radical kitchen appliance. But anyways, amazing piece of engineering. Probably the future and all that. 😁👍
Nothing sounds better then a 406 supercharged small block Chevy, 40 series flow masters, music to my ears
finally , brilliant , its all about speed. somebody finally just wrapped it in a jewel , not a turd . I was always puzzled why electric or alternative meant the car had to look like its from outer space
In 1962 I bought a '64.5 mustang convertable from my neighbor.
It was a fun car.
I saw the electric Datsun on Netflix: The Fastest Car. The car went haywire during a race and totaled a rare Mazda.
So bad ass!!!
I heard about this car in the zombie book series Slow Burn, the author made it sound awesome. And he wasn’t kidding!
At minute 10:56 Mich warned and watched out for anyone around, it was the burn out of the wheels...
Look out his face! .... ...aknoweledging that the strength of the car can do anything... eaven though it is the car he designed, built and driven so much ...his car..
I saw that 4~5 times
He was affraitened, surprised, adrenalized, joyfull, ....
Amazing!
It'll pass anything except an electrical outlet. Personally ,I prefer the throb and sound of the V8. But it is quite interesting.
Likewise gas powered can't pass EVERYTHING, except a gas pump....LOL!
paul austin Model S P100D requires 40 (forty) runs in the 1/4 mile before you get massive performance loss. How many runs at the track day can you get?
but every run gets slower, because of loss of electric power. and where most of these cars go, on the street, try driving it around with the a/c on and the stereo on, then try racing a fast car, your batteries are going to be down, and you will most likely lose.
Throb sound of a V8 is "so last century".
How about a steam locomotive?
Those are fun to look at too.
It's interesting to see how people used to get around in the olden days.
@@jstravelers4094 yeah trains are interesting to look at, especially if your a kid. but a v8 sounds so much better than a 4cyl.
FORD , takes notes ;)
Technically, they did...
@@carstonbrown2853 But it wasn’t.
@ what wasn’t what?
@@carstonbrown2853 they did but they ain’t really
Good for you! Sick racer!
What a great video lot of quality
Not sure if it's a crime to muscle cars or just fuckin awesome!
fdjizm it's a crime
It's awesome.
Both
I thinkg it's a shame ... a muscle car is at least 50% about the sound. Don't bother with artificial sound, I'd rather have a 3 cylinder diesel, it has more soul.
jajajaja (9:05) Love the smell of ozone in the morning!!!
Great video!
That's amazing, but... I'll take a thumping cammed out big block instead.
The Force is with me IKR It's supposed to be a ''muscle car'', not a ''power wheels''😂
Exactly
They are missing the point of a muscle car. Its like taking the roar out of a lion. Ya its fast but it dont turn your head looking where that rumbling sound is coming from. The sound and shaking is half of the experience.
The Force is with me yep
Yeah if you don't like power or performance the big block is a great option
1800 ft lbs of torque???!!!! Sheeesh!
Electric motors produce the most torque at zero revs.
Good to Hear Trial & Error still works
Pure impressive lightning build more build more
10:55 totally looks like Emmett "Doc" Brown, but just with less hair :D
Great Scott!
haha : )
....you killed my comment... "Dr Emmet!" Jajajaj
the burnouts don't sound right
Truth
It’s because there no engine 🐯 , but I’ve bet there might be something to do to make some noice while pressing the electric pedal. Maybe if we can only mimic the thunder cloud.
The weight of the motors and batterys distribution would certainly plant the rear tires no wheel hop certainly would miss the throaty exhaust sound!
WHAT SOUND??? JUSS BURNIN RUBBER.! LIKE LISTENING TO DANCE MUSIC WITHOUT A SUB!!! BUT 0-60 IN 1.9!!!??? WHOAH!
gramps.
Fantastic guys
awesome build ! :P
This is how we'll replace the Ozone Layer
Except ozone is deadly in high concentrations. But in lower concentrations, it smells like line dried laundry. 😍
What we've got here is...
...a fine specimen of Texas black pony. 😂😂😂
Sounds like a new street drug 😉
when mitch does that burnout, watch his eyes...he braces for the torque and holds onto that wheel like his life depended on it...his pupils grow almost fully and black...he knows whats coming, and he wonders if he can tame it, or will it get away
1.7. ONE POINT SEVEN. Mitch's monologue about his life and design philosophy was fantastic.
Muscle car evolution
Imagine if they made it AWD and take it to 1000hp like the gymkhana stang. Zombie 222 would be even quicker
This this this. The best way to get more power to the ground is by adding power to more wheels. An awd, all electric car will absolutely rip. You can even do fancy shit like torque steering if there’s a motor at every wheel.
Absolutely Beautiful Mustang . I love the green on black . The Torque offered by the electric motor is fantastic but the nostalgia offered by the 390 FE in a 68 Fastback is equally fantastic and a tough one to top. But I admit to enjoying the electric conversion quite a bit just due to the unique nature of the car. Stunning car. Ive been pulled over multiple times by law enforcement and the Highway Patrol in my Shelby for of all things....Speeding ! Who'd of thunk it ? Ive never got a speeding ticket but got 2 written warning tickets for excessive side window tint and no front license plate oddly enough. Haven't added the front plate or removed the window tint but I tend to have problems with authority I'm told
AWESOME!
I think it's sick, don't get why people are getting mad at someone for modifying his own vehicle. I mean, isn't that what muscle car culture is all about? Rock on, put a wind up engine in a 69 Camaro if that makes you happy
cheats47 the reason my dear fellow is that a car such as this is no longer in production and with every tweak or so called updated modifications they are becoming ever so hard to find in original condition and so on . Would you not think that with all of the cars on the road now that are still being made a better candidate could have been chosen and saved the integrity of an original work of art . U may enjoy giving the Mona Lisa a eyebrow piercing. I assure you I do not . Sorry long winded.
War pig Hammer yes but who says this car was a perfect running example. They could have pulled it from a junkyard or a barn where it wouldn’t have been put back on the road anyways and gave it new life instead
Remember those toy cars with the zip-pull flywheel in them? Now imagine a big flywheel in a real car, connected to the driveline by a solid transmission and a VERY strong clutch. Spin it up in staging, then let all that stored energy loose at the start.
Y'all saw it here first. :D
